Matt526So is 15.10 stuck with it's current Qt version or is there hope of it being updated in the future?01:55

Igor_Which stable DE do you prefer?04:28
meowscinnamon. It's simple and fast.04:31
Igor_Is it better than Mate?04:35

Igor_Yeah, I mean for work04:40

yossarianuknot a happy camper -> https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/3qazjs/kubuntu_1510_is_a_mess_what_are_the_alternatives/10:58
yossarianukto be honest with the exception of Intel GPU (major) issues and slow login time Kubuntu 15.10 seems good to me (intel issues solved by changing kwin's vsync to NEVER)10:59
ktosiekok, I've read the whole drive with dd before installation and it still failed half way through11:05
ktosiekI mean, dd succeeded, installation failed11:06
yossarianukktosiek: sounds like install media issues - try another stick / DVD11:29
ktosiekI'll try another stick11:30
alvinyossarianuk: It IS a mess. Dualscreen does not work (unless you restart plasmashell), you can't erase or move mails with kmail, all passwords from kwallet are gone. We now have 2 speaker items in the tray? Starting minimized applications still doesn't work. Font preview is still garbled. No, the user experience is less than stellar. I'm also looking around a bit, although I have to admit that other distributions do have some of the same bugs.11:31
alvinThe forced release date may be to blame. I don't know.11:31
hateballmeh, apt-get remove kmix11:32
hateballalso isnt this more like !ot discussion :)11:32
alvinNot as long as we stick to Kubuntu issues :-)11:33
alvinUsually I can live with the occasional bug, but my wife is complaining really hard about not being able to delete mail11:34
alvinSo finding a solution is a priority11:34
hateballWell, the solution to your speaker problem is: apt-get remove kmix11:35
alvinAre you sure?11:35
hateballI did so on my own machine and it works fine11:35
hateballNot on plasma 5 / 15.10 now so cant say for the other stuff11:36
alvinok, aptitude why couldn't find a reason to keep it. Purge it is11:36
hateballI don't remember if you need to re-assign media keys for volume or not11:36
hateballif you use them, that is11:37
alvinseems to work now. I'll reboot and see if they still do11:38
s_20so11:40
s_20i just switched to 15.10 myself and my task/activity/whatever bar is *gone*11:41
s_20wow, there it is11:41
s_20after about 5 minutes of having logged in11:41
alvinhateball: Well, audio still works, but I can no longer connect the bluetooth headphones I was using before removing kmix. What weirdness is this11:44
alvinWait, ignore that. Used wrong mouse button11:45
alvinmultimedia keys also still work. Removing kmix was sound advice11:45
yossarianuks_20: there is a slow login bug - being fixed hopefully soon.11:50
alvinThat's a bug I don't have. Can someone exchange his 'slow login' with my 'unable to delete mail'?11:51
alvin(imagine being able to swap bugs)11:52
lordievaderalvin: I think you can only acumulate bugs, not swap... :P11:53
yossarianukalvin: not having dual screen issues at work (intel) I do have the issue randomly at home (nvidia)11:58
yossarianukjust going to system-settings -> display fixes it usually,11:59
alvinyossarianuk: I have the dual screen issue at work (Intel too). I fix it by running 'kquitapp5 plasmashell; kstart5 plasmashell' (Someone here told me)11:59
yossarianukhowever with Intel GPU by default my system starts to freak out like its on Acid - totally unusable screen , really odd - like a broken analogue video11:59
alvinDon't get me started about the pc at home! (nvidia). I have a BLANK screen during boot. encrypted HDD, so I have to guess when to type my password. After a while KDE starts...12:00
yossarianukalvin: try goint to the display settings - change any setting, enable 2nd monitor - click apply12:00
hateballalvin: hopefully nvidias new driver with KMS support is out soon, that should solve that12:00
alvin15.04 didn't have that problem, but ok12:01
* alvin is accumulating bugs12:01
yossarianukalvin: thats a plymouth issue12:01
yossarianukyou can enable boot messages so you can see whats going on12:01
yossarianukWhen I first started using Linux every distro easily showed you boot messages12:01
yossarianukhiding them is windows like12:02
alvinyossarianuk: True, and I tried that. But that is a long time ago. Now everything starts at once and boot messages are, well. It's not like it used to be. When you could see and know where and what went wrong12:02
hateballIf you're a power user that needs to see boot messages you can quite easily disable the splash12:02
yossarianukalvin: -> http://askubuntu.com/questions/558366/how-to-show-boot-messages-in-14-1012:02
alvinIf only this notebook would have another wifi chip I'd be running BSD12:02
yossarianukwhy BSD ?12:03
alvinWith splash disabled it's still not clear when to type the cryptsetup pasword. Actually the plymouth password field (when visible) is more clear12:03
yossarianukbe like heading 15 years backwards in terms of h/w support, gaming , etc12:03
alvinGood question. I like the separation of base OS/kernel and ports. It's much, much more stable.12:04
yossarianukalvin: gentoo/arch ?12:04
hateballIt's nice how we have an offtopic channel for things like this so it's easy to see actual support requests12:04
alvinIn those there's always something that breaks. No, I have the best experience with Kubuntu actually.12:04
alvinok, but this started with kmail - can't delete messages. That's a support request.12:05
yossarianukhateball: I did start off explaining how to get boot messages on kubuntu...12:05

squashmy 3 day old install is using under 15gb with a bunch of apps and data installed15:29
Redpikeso nice :) i have partition with 30gb free space, and another large partition for data15:30
Redpiketell me, can i easly install Kubuntu near my Windows 7?15:30

Redpikehmmm :( if you know what i mean, if i will install ubuntu, i will can choose option to install ubuntu near windows15:32
Redpikebut the question is, can i do this with Kubuntu15:32
squashI understand the question, I have not had windows since 1996 so I can't give you advice15:33
Redpikei wanna try Kubuntu, this GUI is perfect for me, im a junior java dev so i will install 2nd OS for devs programs15:34
Redpikewindows for music, games etc etc, linux for deving15:34
Redpikeguys, please tell me15:41
Redpikecan i easly install Kubuntu near my Windows 7?15:41
geniiRedpike: You could install it onto that 30G partition15:43
denza242Redpike: when you say near, do you mean the two partitions will be next to each other?15:45
denza242I think that's possible15:45
marco-parilloIf the partition you want to install into already exists, you should see it here: https://userbase.kde.org/Kubuntu/Installation#Manual15:45
yofelRedpike: the installer has an option to install alongside windows. But if you already have the partition prepared you'll probably want to go the manual partitioning way. There just set your new partition as kubuntu root and you'll later be able to select what you want to boot15:45
yofeland do follow that link ^15:46
denza242If it's formatted as NTFS however, you'll need to reformat it15:46
denza242because running loonix on NTFS is a pain15:46
yofeluhm, I think NTFS as / is impossible ... (or at least not sure why you would want to do that)15:47
dlongHey guys, I need some help with my microphone setup.  I launched pavucontrol and my mic is detected as an input device and detects sound just fine.  However, I can't get applications to use it as a recording device.  There is nothing listed in the recording devices tab of pavucontrol.  Any help would be appreciated.15:47
yofelbut the partitioner will auto-format the drive15:47
* yofel wonders who came up with the arbitrary 25G number on the installation manual15:47
Redpike@yofel - thanks for the response, so i need to change ntfs to fat32 and then install kubuntu, and after turning on my pc i will see boot gui with my OSes?15:51
Redpikeim new in linux so please respect my ignorance :D15:53
yofelRedpike: just set the partition to / in the manual partitioning, that should default to formatting it as ext4. And yes, you'll see a boot gui with our systems after the install15:53
rodolfojcjRedpike: I think the Windows partition will continue on a NTFS partition and the Kubuntu partition on ext15:53
rodolfojcjext415:53
yofeljust make sure you don't accidentally format your windows partition15:53
yofel(sounds obvious, but happens...)15:53
Redpikesure :) what do you think about my idea, Windows for media, games etc and Kubuntu for dev and programming (in Java, Oracle etc)15:54
rodolfojcjRedpike: the installer will take your original Windows partition space, then will resize it to open some space to be used for the Kubuntu OS and at the end both systems will co-exist, each one with its own partition15:55
yofelsounds reasonable. Kubuntu could probably also handle the media part and games to some extend, but for latter you'll usually want windows15:55
yofelrodolfojcj: he already has a seperate partition15:55
rodolfojcjok15:56
yofelin that case the installer would make yet another partition and leave the spare one untouched15:56
yofel(I think)15:56
rodolfojcjI think Kubuntu will fit most of those usages, except the gaming part15:56
denza242wine :}15:57
Redpikereally thanks guys for the answers15:57
Redpike!15:58
Redpikeit's really good to meet some people like you :)15:58
rodolfojcjwell, I'm more of a software developer than a gamer. I remember I used Wine to run Unreal Tournament GOTY 1999 and Age of Empires I and II and it worked fine15:58
Redpikei spent my life with windows, and now i want to change something, try something new :)15:59
rodolfojcjI don't know about the current state of Wine or the gaming experience15:59
rodolfojcjfor the programming part with Java, you're covered with any Linux distribution based on a hardware compatible with the JVM16:00
Redpikei see, but Kubuntu GUI is really nice :)16:00
rodolfojcjor the Java stuff created by the OpenJDK project16:00
Redpikeand these programs, good stuf16:00
Redpikestuff*16:00
rodolfojcjalso, you could use IDEs like Netbeans and Eclipse, or use nice text editors like Kate, Sublime, Vim, etc. I personally use Kate and Vim (this last one via Konsole terminal or via Yakuake terminal)16:02
BluesKajyup  yakuake is great, f12 and it's there16:04
rodolfojcjRedpike: and you can learn other nice software development topics, like Python, Ruby, Erlang, Elixir as programming languages; Django as a web framework, etc, etc, etc16:05
Redpikefor me best Java IDE is Intellij :)16:05
SmurphyWhat's the best PHP IDE ?16:05
SmurphyI still work with emacs-nox :)16:06
rodolfojcjI developed software based on Java, but there are nicer and more open alternatives16:06
rodolfojcjin my point of view16:06
yofelfor PHP I would say PhpStorm if you don't mind proprietary IDEs, otherwise probably Aptana16:06
SmurphyFor me - java is an enterprise crap. bloatware and unstable as hell.16:07
Redpike@rodolfojcj sure :)16:07
SmurphyAptana ? I'll check it out, thx. Don't like proprietary stuff.16:07
Redpike@Smurphy thats why i hate php :D16:07
Redpikei can't describe why16:08
rodolfojcjnonetheless, in the Java world there are interesting initiatives, like Grails, Groovy (very useful language), Clojure, Scala, Play framework, etc16:08
Redpikei can't learn it16:08
BluesKajwhat's bugging me atm is system settings 5 as root will not remember font, colour, icon etc for editing files in kate or dolphin , it's become a real pita16:08
SmurphyRedpike: Most issues with PHP is that it's very easy to use. However, if you don't know the systems it will run on, and have no basic idea of security, you program crap.16:09
Redpike@rodolfojcj i'm using javaee with cdi, ejb, hibernate, jpa, jsf, richfaces, mockito, glassfish16:09
SmurphyThe Java guys just assume that the JVM will take care of all that (system and security), then come the fact that the projects are large and hadned over several generations of consultants, and you have crapsicle software in the end.16:09
rodolfojcjRedpike: then you'll need a machine with powerful hardware16:10
rodolfojcjmy current Kubuntu machine with 4GB of RAM is of no practical use to develop Java based software. Too slow, too heavy16:11
Redpike@rodolfojcj i think i have it, intel i7, 8gb of ram16:12
yofelthat depends on the use case. You probably don't want to write a high performance website in java, but there are plenty of cases where it's a good choice for webservices16:12
Smurphyrodolfojcj: got a Mac mini 6.2, i7 2.6 Quadcore CPU, 16GB Ram and 250GB SSD :) Ok for development while listening to Music :D16:12
rodolfojcjbut it's very useful to develop software based on other technologies. Runs lighter and I can use it at the same time with other applications16:12
rodolfojcjje je je16:12
rodolfojcjmy machine is at least 2 generations older, but thanks to Linux and free software, I've prolonged its useful lifetime16:13
Redpikeas all of older computers :)16:14

Michel_hi, i installed 15.10 and now can't log in. (loop bug). i tried to remove .Xauthority, reinstall xorg. nothing helps16:43
drleviathanMichel_, do you have the virtual terminals availble?  CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + F1  through F5 or F6  (or something like that)16:47

kwaadpepperthenerdjones: http://askubuntu.com/questions/286284/system-no-longer-boots-gave-up-waiting-for-root-device-initramfs-dev-mappe23:30
kwaadpepperthenerdjones: have you installed using encryption ?23:31
thenerdjoneskwaadpepper: home folder encryption, thats it23:32
kwaadpepperthenerdjones: if you don't need it just don"t check and retry your install23:33
kwaadpepperuncheck*23:33
kubuntuuserhey! As usual, i've upgraded to 15.10 and everything got broken again23:33
thenerdjonesok ill give it a shot23:34
kubuntuusercould you please help me get back to a running system?23:34
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: hast is actually broken ?23:34
kwaadpepperwhat*23:34
kubuntuuseri can start in recovery mode, but only get command prompt.23:35
kubuntuuserfrom, there, i can run xinit23:35
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: you do have optimus or nvidia driver ?23:35
kubuntuuserbut when i try "startkde", i get libgl errors and it gets stuck23:35
kubuntuuseri have an intel and an amd card23:36
kwaadpepperkubuntuuserhave you tried apt-get install kubuntu-desktop --reinstall ?23:36
kubuntuuserkwaadpepper: yes, still got same problem23:37
kubuntuuseri have uninstalled and installed the whole kde back23:37
kwaadpepperhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/133844/fglrx-causes-serious-bug-black-screen23:38
kubuntuuserlibGL error: unable to load driver: i965_dri.so23:38
kwaadpepperok23:38
kwaadpepperso this is the intel driver that could not load23:39
kwaadpeppersomeone told me he had bugs like htat using intel+ATI23:39
kwaadpepperthe equivalent of optimus which i also had problem with23:39
kwaadpepperwhat you may have to do is just load using ati driver23:39
kubuntuuserkwaadpepper: is opengl required to run kde?23:40
kwaadpepperto do that you need to create  a black list file i guess like /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-intel.conf23:40
kwaadpepperno it can use xrender23:41
kwaadpepperin Compositor settings23:41
thenerdjones gigs of swap space seems a little drastic, is there a reason it keeps giving me so much?23:42
thenerdjones17 gigs, sorry23:42
kubuntuusermaybe i can start it without opengl then23:42
kwaadpepperthenerdjones: that is too much 2 G should be fine23:43
kubuntuuserthenerdjones: hybernation maybe23:43
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: well you may have to change settings in option panel23:43
kwaadpepperyou do manage to boot in desktop right ?23:44
kubuntuuserkwaadpepper: at the moment there is no panel: only a white shell window23:44
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: In system configuration -> Material ->Display -> Compositor23:45
kubuntuuseri managed to start xorg but not kde23:45
kwaadpepperHave you tried to start using you ati drive r?23:45
kwaadpepperinstead of the intel GPU ?23:45
kubuntuuseryep, but only managed to get a black screen23:46
kubuntuuserand a frozen system23:46
kubuntuuserthe intel one seems to be the best choice23:47
kwaadpepperI have optimus (intel+nvidia) and the nouveau driver was actually throwing shit every where, are you using it ?23:47
thenerdjoneswhen i go to the manual install i see a lot of weird stuff going on here, device for boot loader info should be /dev/sda and not "/dev/dm-0" right? also there are a lot of "/dev/mapper/mint--vg-root"  and swaps23:47
kwaadpepperhenerdjones: i never saw these terms in that panel23:48
thenerdjonessince i never had a working system, its safe to delete EVERYTHING and install freash right?23:49
kubuntuuseri am now trying to uninstall nouveau23:49
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: what i had to to is blacklist the nouveau driver and install nvidia driver23:49
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: don"t uninstall it23:49
kwaadpepperkubuntuuser: you just need to blacklist that shit23:49
kwaadpeppercreate a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf23:50
kwaadpepper#blacklist nouveau23:50
kwaadpepper#options nouveau modeset=023:50
kwaadpepperremove move that #23:50
kubuntuuserbut it is not loaded23:50
kwaadpepperin front of each line23:50
kwaadpepperok23:50
kwaadpepperwell seriously i don't think i could help you more since i never had ati card using linux23:51
kwaadpepperBut i know you can change the rendering backend23:52
kwaadpepperalso opengl should be working, there is no reason it isn't23:53
kubuntuusermy fault: i should had not upgraded: i knew every time it gets worse :)23:53
kubuntuuserthank you for your efferts23:53
