bprompterxr3:    yeap, that's what I was doing, the filesystem was "raw", but yes, ddrescue does a "raw copy" of cluster per cluster, whenever it finds any errors, tries to give it a fix, if it can't be fixed, it skips it and continues, and copies all non-corrupted data it can along the way ,   -d (direct access) -f ( force)00:01
tnecnivHi! I am running ubuntu 14.04 with two nVidia graphics cards. One is a 9800 for standard graphics, and the other is a Tesla K20 for scientific computing. After installing the drivers for both, I am stuck in some low resolution graphics mode, as if it cant detect my monitor. Any insight00:01

erxr3TJ-, so if I have a file named partition.img, I guess I'd need to go to its folder first, and then apply the command like this: sudo testdisk -log partition.dd ?00:03
TJ-erxr3: if the file isn't owned by root, you could just do "testdisk -log /path/to/partition.dd"00:04
erxr3bprompt, sure I'd try ddrescue, too. you mean the disk image I created is also "raw" copy?00:04
erxr3TJ- ah, I see, I will try which one works, thank you very much!00:05

TJ-ubuntu_: That isn't an Ubuntu support question. Try asking in ##android00:06
ubuntu_The last android I bought has been blasted with garbage software.00:06
bprompterxr3:    hehehe, nope, that would put you on square one and defeat the idea of the utility =),  the source was "raw", the copy was a "fixed" version of it, with valid partition table info as well as data00:06
erxr3bprompt, in the command "ddrescue -f -d  SOURCE TARGET" the source is the image's path, and the target would point to the folder where the recovered files would be saved, I presume?00:09
erxr3bprompt, if they are so, would it be then typed like this:  ddrescue -f -d  ~/Documents/partition.img media/myuser/myrecoveryfolder ?00:10
bprompterxr3:    nope, device in this case, use "lsblk" to see who is who, but something like -> ddrescue -d -f /dev/sda4 /dev/sdc3  <-00:11
erxr3bprompt, but how does it know which image where is to recover?00:11
erxr3and where to00:11
bprompthehe00:11
bprompterxr3:   as many folks here pointed out, chek the manpages :), but the arguments order, of course00:11
bpromptjust like "dd" does btw00:12
bpromptwell.. to be fair.. dd uses if= and of= arguments... so...hmmm anyhow. for ddrescue is SOURCE TARGET order00:13
erxr3bprompt, my source is not even a partition, but an image of it00:13
erxr3how can I mention it as /dev/sda400:13

Abewhy?03:18
zeon98Anyone got time to help me out please,   i would like to limit internet traffic to my home server between midnight and 6 am.  From what i have tried i can only limit all network traffic.03:18
Abeidk I didn't use live cd for a very long time03:18
daemon_pid_007sudo su will ask for root password which is not setup, but if you set it up then sudo su is not bad at all03:18
zeon98Any help would be amazing. thank you03:18
wafflejockzeon98: what have you tried exactly?03:18
tonyyarussozeon98: You mean you want it to be unlimited for communication with other machines in your house?03:18
wafflejockzeon98: you might be able to make use of squid3 to proxy and therefore limit access not sure though03:19
wafflejockmaybe some easier way with a cron script and iptables or something though03:19
zeon98I want to allow a server at my home to use full internet bandwidth during the night, but limit that usage during the day03:20
Abedoes 16.04 ships with Mir instead of X.org ??03:20
tonyyarussoAbe: 16.04 doesn't exist yet.03:20
Abewell when it comes out03:20
daemon_pid_007squid is the best, there are pluggins which will help you limit and control network traffic and also monito it, downside you will have to dedicate a computer for this purpose and have all your network traffic pass through this computer03:20
tonyyarussoAbe: Ask after feature freeze :)03:21
wafflejockzeon98: suppose you could use this and have a cron script that changes the settings http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man8/wondershaper.8.html03:21
Abetonyyarusso: what do you mean?03:21
zeon98tried a few things like wondershaper03:21
daemon_pid_007when is 16.04 releasing though, i always keep wondering????03:21
eddwow Ubuntu 15.10 rocks03:21
eddreally cool03:21
eddnever used Ubuntu before03:21
AbeApril 201603:21
inteusedd: do you have a support question?03:21
wafflejockedd: heh was about to ask what you upgraded from :)03:21
tonyyarussoAbe: That would be the point when it's been decided what's in and what's out for the release.03:21
daemon_pid_007edd you will just love ubuntu just give it a try03:22
tonyyarussodaemon_pid_007: 16 = 2016, 04 = April03:22
wafflejockedd: if you don't have support issues join #ubuntu-offtopic for general chat03:22
zeon98The problem i have is i want to always use full local bandwidth,03:22
eddI had Fedora 22..which sucked03:22
wafflejockzeon98: just want to limit internet traffic?03:22
zeon98yeah03:22
eddwafflejock, I wanted to know how I could change the default theme? and if there were some cool themes you guys could recommend?03:22
wafflejockzeon98: yeah think maybe squid is the way to go then03:22
zeon98everything i try limits all traffic03:22
daemon_pid_007tonyyarusso, wow i never new the secret code03:23
wafflejockzeon98: squid proxy can just be for internet traffic03:23
daemon_pid_007amazing03:23
tonyyarussozeon98: So what have you been doing so far?  This could be done with pretty basic iptables rules, where you just have different rules for your subnet and everything else.03:23
daemon_pid_007any guys using netgear nighthawk r700003:23
zeon98squid is quite complex, i cant believe theres not an easier solution03:23
tonyyarussoThere is.  iptables rate limiting.03:24
wafflejockoh huh03:24
daemon_pid_007zeon98: squid is by far the easiest solutions on the market03:24
xieyiI am using kubuntu 15.1003:24
wafflejockedd: personally use the gnumix icons but running Ubuntu Gnome since I'm a fan of gnome, dunno about Unity themes really though03:25
xieyithe sddm always crash on boot03:25
zeon98Everytime i use squid i fail03:25
xieyinow I have to change to lightdm03:25
daemon_pid_007xubuntu is the best for running in virtual machines03:25
tonyyarussozeon98: Am I invisible?03:25
eddwafflejock, is it Gnome 3?03:25
wafflejockedd: yeah03:25
zeon98tonyyarusso: you say i should be able to do it using iptables?03:25
xieyibut lightdm stucks too03:25
eddwafflejock, I like Gnome 3 too.. how do I then switch to that window manager?03:25
xieyiI found the new version is very unstable03:26
wafflejockedd: a few versions back from the latest so doesn't have all the animations in the menu and notifications still in the silly bottom tray but pretty good03:26
wafflejockedd: you can install the gnome-desktop package the logout and can login to gnome session from the drop down list but personally tried it out for a few days then re-installed with Ubuntu Gnome distro disk03:26
tonyyarussozeon98: Yup.  There's a time module for that restriction, and a module for rate-limiting, so you just combine those two, and have a rule that matches and allows your LAN traffic with higher precedence than the one for the rest.03:26
eddI keep hitting the top left corner to bring up the search here :)03:26
wafflejockedd: https://ubuntugnome.org/03:26
tonyyarussozeon98: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/iptables-for-restricting-access-by-time-of-day.html has some stuff on the time bit03:27
Abexieyi: I installed kubuntu on top of my ubuntu system with apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, and just left it like that... I think kubuntu runs a lot more stable that way03:27
tonyyarussozeon98: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/163657/set-packet-rate-limit-via-iptables has some stuff about the limit module03:28
eddwafflejock, is Ubuntu Gnome a different ubuntu flavor?03:28
eddit looks like I will have to create a new usb loader for it?03:29
zeon98i can limit all traffic tonyyarusso but cant internet and local, when googling what should i type to get on the right tracks if that makes sense?03:29
tonyyarussozeon98: Just make your first rule match the local subnet an accept, and the second rule be the rate-limiting one.03:30
xieyiAbe: that requires a lot of space. I am using an old laptop.03:30
daemon_pid_007Anyone prefer pure Debian over ubuntu03:30
xieyiI will try that anyway thx03:30
xieyilooking forward to a better solution to the problem of sddm03:30
Abexieyi: well yes but I have more than 2 terrabyte of space so... I'm using a newer laptop 3rd gen03:31
daemon_pid_007How to install ubuntu on Macbook pro early 2015 13 inch03:31
Abexieyi: how much HD space do you have? it's just a few hundred MB i think03:31

daemon_pid_007Does ubuntu run well on a macbook03:32
daemon_pid_007I need help installing ubuntu on a macbook pro 201503:32

icansmellyoudaemon_pid_007, see if this helps. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro03:34
zeon98tonyyarusso: how do i understand internet traffic against local traffic?03:34
tonyyarussozeon98: By IP address.03:34
tonyyarussoOr interface, if you have it set up that way.03:34
zeon98that i get tonyyarusso03:35
daemon_pid_007icansmellyou: have you tried installing it03:35
Abexieyi: I think there are just those two ways. you said you use 15.10? maybe downgrade to 14.04 maybe a little more stable for you.03:35
iceyballzdaemon_pid_007: Use virtualbox if you want it up at the same time as OSX, use Bootcamp otherwise.03:35
wafflejockedd: yup should work I usually USB install03:35
wafflejockedd: not sure if I just used DD or if I used one of the disk creators last time though03:35
icansmellyoudaemon_pid_007, no i have not but i looks like others have had success in the past. i belive that link will answer any of you questions.03:35
eddok maybe I will do it some other time03:35
eddfor now this is ok :)03:36
Abexieyi: when you have an old laptop maybe kubuntu is not the right solution for you at all? maybe you should use something more lightweight?03:36
zeon98there must be a way of saying limit external traffic too x kbs and allow internal traffic to run at max03:36
wafflejockedd: yeah you can just do, sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop, if you just want to use it for now03:36
eddI didn't quite get the difference though03:37
wafflejockedd: just need to logout afterwards and choose Gnome from the menu next to your login box, just if you want to get rid of all the unity stuff easier to reinstall03:37
TJ-zeon98: yes; apply the limiting rule to traffic ingress/egress on the WAN interface03:37
AbeI don't like the new gnome 3 :( to much switching03:37
wafflejockedd: if you do the Ubuntu Gnome distro install it just doesn't have the Unity stuff in there03:37
zeon98xieyi: puppy linux is amazing with old kit03:37
daemon_pid_007iceballz: I have viryual installation using virtualbox but the performance is really bad, i cnnot use the web browse in vm so want to go with native intallation, i wanted to know if it supports the touch pad and all the other drivers like the wifi drivers work03:37
wafflejockAbe: eh I hadn't been using Gnome 2 in a while so was just a new thing to me03:37
eddoh you mean with this choice I will have to keep choosing between gnome and unity when I login?03:37
wafflejockedd: yup if you just install the package can switch between em03:38
wafflejockedd: more disk space though and I have SSD so try to keep it minimal03:38
eddthat sounds cool03:38
zeon98how do you define wan over lan TJ-03:38
eddok03:38
TJ-zeon98: on a gateway? by the interface connected to the WAN03:38
xieyiAbe: Yeah the issue becomes more serious after kubuntu requires more memory after recent upgrades03:38
Abewafflejock: I like gnome 2 a lot more. My KDE desktop is build like Gnome 203:39
xieyizeon98: thx I am trying it03:39
zeon98no by the linux server running local03:39
Abexieyi: I experienced the opposite since the last kernel upgrade03:39
eddwafflejock, E: Unable to locate package gnome-desktop03:40
TJ-zeon98: if you're trying to apply the rules on the server itself, then you put a rule that matches the LAN subnet in the OUTPUT table as the first rule, and then the next rule applies the restriction based on 0.0.0.0/003:40
eddwafflejock, you sure that is the right command? or am I missing some repositories?03:40
TJ-zeon98: the rule matching the LAN sub-net does a -j ACCEPT03:40
tarak_I am new to IRC. Will anyone help me ?03:41

tonyyarussoSemiNus: old-releases.ubuntu.com03:48
SemiNustonyyarusso, love you for that advice, thank you!03:49
tonyyarussoSemiNus: You DO have to upgrade, but that will help make the upgrade less fussy.  It is not receiving patches.03:49
zeon98where did he go iceyballz?03:49
SemiNustonyyarusso, so once I have a working  sources.list,  I could then run a  dist-upgrade, right?03:49

BluefootYes, a boot menu shows, but if you boot Ubuntu "File not found" Windows: BOOTMGR is missing03:52
AbeSemiNus: get the ubuntu source.list do an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade03:52
TJ-SemiNus: you edit /etc/apt/sources.list and use old-releases.ubuntu.com in place of the current archive.ubuntu.com or whatever is there03:52

deper29so, I'm a bad person and I waited too long to upgrade my system. I'm running utopic 14.10, but it is giving me errors when I try to upgrade05:29
cfhowlett!eolupgrade | deper2905:30

cfhowlettdeper29, perhaps LTS only would suit you best ...05:32
deper29I feel that's something that should be worked out some day05:32

ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04)05:32
deper29cfhowlett: yeah, perhaps I'll start using LTS from now on05:32
cfhowlettdeper29, 14.04 is current version.  16.04 will drop in 6 months.05:33
deper29okay, thanks a bunch for the help05:33
deper29is it recommended I backup my /home and just rsync it onto my new install?05:33
deper29err, not recommended05:33
cfhowlettdeper29, well, that's one method.  but if you have a separate home, no need.05:34

ubottudeper29: Your home directory is where all of your personal files are usually kept. For moving your home directory to a separate partition, please see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving05:34
deper29yeah, it's not on a separate partition at the moment. I'll make another partition and throw it there and deal with that then05:35

TundraAbe, dunno, just labeled executable05:41
Abewhat does it say if you do ./yourexecutable ?05:41
Tundraiceyballz, yeah, pretty sure05:42
iceyballzTundra: Are you starting it with ./xxxx in term or just a double-click? No errors in term?05:42
Tundraiceyballz, just double click05:43
TundraAbe, that returns: error while loading shared libraries: libglut.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory05:43
OerHekswe can start guessing, what is the name of that game, Tundra ?05:43
iceyballzTundra: try in term with ./filename05:43

iceyballzTundra: apt-get install freeglut305:45

iceyballzSame thing follow that last step I sent and it seems per other users to fix the issue05:49
Tundraiceyballz, sure, but I didn't really get what you were saying05:50
TundraNor do I know how to make that script05:50
Tundrawell, the one Abe gave me05:50
iceyballzTundra: First: move libglut.so.3.7 into /uplink05:50
Abehttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=154937&page=3&p=3396009#post3396009 trying to get uplink running?05:51
iceyballzTundra: Second: make a new script in your text editor and paste "#!/bin/sh05:51
OerHeksnice, we give support for a paid game https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/uplink/05:51
iceyballzTundra: Third: Use this new script instead of normal launcher05:52
Tundraiceyballz, ok, where do I find libglut?05:52
iceyballzTundra: http://dri.sourceforge.net/res/libglut.so.3.7.005:52
Tundraiceyballz, ok, so now I make a new text file with a text editor like mousepad?05:53
iceyballzYup05:54
iceyballzEither use no extension or .sh05:54
AbeTundra: look in synaptic package manager for missing libraries. they mostly have everything you need05:55
Tundraiceyballz, any specific name?05:55
iceyballzAbe: he needs it specifically in his folder, not through the manager05:56
iceyballzTundra: Nope, perhaps "useme" or "launcher"05:56
iceyballzTundra: Then just in terminal run "./launcher" or whatever you named it.05:57

linociscobekks, ok. i will check other browsers08:29

linociscobekks, but it is same thing when we upload image on Libre office to upload or insert image dialogbox08:30
linociscobekks, meaning not only on firefox08:30
bekkslinocisco: there is a standard interface for applications to use a default dialog box. thats what they do. if you want them to use other dialog boxes, with more features, etc., the devs of every single app have to implement it.08:31
linociscobekks, I dont them to implement another dialog box, just to give users a few options like Ms Windows to add more columns in heading08:32
linociscobekks, I dont want them to implement another dialog box, just to give users a few options like Ms Windows to add more columns in heading08:33
bekkslinocisco: thats something they have to implement. Devs of every single app, for every single app.08:33
bekkslinocisco: Technically, a dialog box with more options is a different dialog box.08:33
linociscobekks, that is actually useful feature and ubuntu is 15.10 now. when will this feature be added on ubuntu?08:34

erxr3hello everyone, is ddrescue a tool to create a disk image, on which you can apply further data recovery tools, or is it by itself a tool to recover data from images?10:27
SeveasNiesh_: apt-cache search kf5 | grep -- '-dev'10:27
Seveaserxr3: the former10:28

erxr3Seveas, yes, I am in the process of a partition recovery, and created via ddrescue an image of the partition, and applied testdisk on it. but it didnt save any data. this may have to do with that the partition could not retain the data I'd saved there10:29

MonkeyDustGuest13736  i think you mean pastebinit10:37
erxr3Seveas, the problem is, I cannot mount it. as I've told some people here yesterday, I had a file system mess while creating partitions and saving data on them. and I found out that this partition, that I created and saved data on in the previous session, has become labelled as "unknown". yet it can still be shown in the output of fdisk here; /dev/sdb910:37
erxr3it is shown as "unknown" like this: http://is.gd/3Vwruq10:38
Guest13736MonkeyDust,  yes thanks!10:38
erxr3when I just tried to mount it I got this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/13061785/10:41
erxr3this was formerly a partition that I effectively cut-pasted data on, and could lock as encrypted. so there must be data there. but testdisk returned zero output10:43

AyyHelloHello, my OS broke and I am getting into a black screen each time I login, I am with a liveusb but I dont know how to recover the home dir, since with ecryptfs says that it cant find my directory. can anybody help with that?18:08
marlo_AyyHello, there are web pages instructing you how to mount your encryptfs with a root stick18:08
marlo_you have to know all your passcodes and keys and such as18:09
marlo_i've done it once, long ago18:09
AyyHelloI remember my keys, but what is the mount key?18:09
bekksAyyHello: Do what did you do prior breaking it?18:09
AyyHelloThis part confuses me18:09
WereCatfWindows3: just out of curiosity, do you even have /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin? I'm not sure if specifying non-existent directories to PATH would break things, but I suppose it could. If you don't have those dirs then remove those from the line.18:09
AyyHellobekks: Something went wrong with Unity, now when I login the screen is black and my steam/skype notifications glitch. until they disappear18:10
marlo_AyyHello, i can't quite remember, but i think it's perhaps the key you use to boot the machine initially?  the same key that unocks the partition18:10

xNeari dont like apt-get, i learned aptitude19:41
xNearonly at apt-tet one thing i know is19:41
xNear"apt-get install aptitude" xD19:42
daftykinsxNear: that was a very foolish move, apt-get is standard - aptitude is not.19:42
daftykinslearning what comes 'in the box' is best19:42

xNeari will try to learn it ;)19:42

OnkelTemthey recommened to install hal from ppa:mjblenner/ppa-hal19:49
daftykinsyou have to use chrome from google to use any web DRM related content, typically.19:49

bekkstechnotrumpet: the same way as you would do on a new computer :)19:50
daftykinstechnotrumpet: same way it's always installed, either burn a DVD of the ISO or put it on a bootable USB flash drive.19:50
technotrumpetHow is that bekks?19:50
daftykinsdami0: that's silly, just install steam natively - it doesn't need wine.19:50

lickalottis anyone here familiar with lxd, specifically building a windows client image?22:33
lickalottI'm not see very much out there in the way of instructions/tuts22:33
compdoclickalott, not sure lxd can do that. but Im new to lxd too22:34
k1llickalott: iirc containers are just for linux clients22:35
daftykinsyeah doesn't sound like a thing22:35
lickalottit seemed to me that since version 13 and up provided support for windows clients.  Unless I read that wrong.22:35
lickalottlemme see if I can find that page.22:35
Seveaslickalott: to run windows, you need a virtualization solution, not a container.22:36
lickalottSorry.  0.19 not 13 - https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/news/22:37
lickalottI was trying to install xen (currently running 15.04) but that was a disaster.  I just want windows to correct the MS office compatibility issues that I'm running into.  What, in your opinions, is the best option?  virt-manager, boxes, etc...?22:38
daftykinspretty sure xen is not the favoured tech in ubuntu land22:39
ActionParsnip!xen22:39
ubottuXEN is a virtual machine monitor for x86 that supports execution of multiple guest operating systems with unprecedented levels of performance and resource isolation. Information on installing it for Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Xen22:39
daftykinslickalott: so you're only after running one VM?22:39

baiterhe's trying to run windows though, so yeah, just use virtualbox22:40
lickalotti did in the past but VB seems to be such a resource hog.  I was looking for something a little more "bare metal" like xen.  THen I came across lxd+dockers and thought i'd give that a go22:40
bekkslickalott: xen is a level 1 hypervisor, while lxd+docker are a level 2 hypervisor - just as virtualbox.22:41
baiterwindows is the resource hog22:41
lickalottbut it makes sense that it can't/won't do windows, as there is NO information out there on building a windows client.22:41
daftykinsbaiter: such silly comments here do not help anyone.22:41

lickalottyou prefer VB over something like boxes or virt-manager?22:42
lickalottI haven't tried the other two yet, which is why I'm asking22:42
bekkslickalott: What is "boxes"?22:42
daftykinsjust try them, any poor VB performance was more likely down to not having VT-x enabled / supported.22:42
k1llickalott: for quick .docx rebuilding to .doc, yes :)22:42
bekkslickalott: And are you aware of the fact that libvirt is just a library for accessing hypervisors?22:43
lickalottno....but I am now.22:43
k1lcould actually try and see what MS office support is in wine, now22:43
trimetaI'm trying to build a server with a BTRFS RAID 1 root on top of encrypted volumes. Normally, initramfs doesn't want to decrypt two different volumes on boot, but I modified /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/cryptroot to fix this. However, the system still refuses to boot of the BTRFS system wants two devices, even though both of those devices are unlocked.22:43
lickalotti am also running a Fedora box that I have virt-manager installed and it acts just like virtual box.  I can build a VM from an .iso or otherwise22:44
trimetaAnyone know what's going on here? I can mount the BTRFS system without error from within the initramfs rescue shell, but for some reason it's not mounting automatically in the scripts.22:44
lickalottk1l,  I will...thanks!  Never even thought of that.  (which is why I stopped in here.  :D)22:44
k1lboxes is a virtualbox gui from gnome, iirc22:45
k1lor some other libvirt gui.22:45
bekkslickalott: thats because you are using virt-manager with a level 2 hypervisor - just as virtualbox is.22:45
lickalottsorry bekks, yes k1l is correct.22:45
lickalotti guess my point in saying that was just that the libvirt libraries come as dependencies with virt-manager, so I didn't know their purpose was to access hypervisors.22:46

wevabekks, it is this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/13077200/23:19
benrihazamonzo: you can start by looking at /var/log/dmesg from recovery mode23:19
jmaresI've made an environment setup shell script but installing CUDA requires reboot because nouveau drivers need to be diabled...23:20
hazamonzobenri: I can still get to a terminal after the splash if thats better than recovery mode. I think its simply a case of the OS loads fine but nothing is rendered23:20
bekksweva: try running sudo apt-get autoremove23:20
hazamonzobenri: On moment and i'll take a look23:21
benrihazamonzo: ok, that works.  yeah its probably a display driver problem or something wrong with your xorg.conf23:21
benrihazamonzo: do you have nvidia display hardware?23:22
hazamonzobenri: odd thing is I actually got the drivers working well... for a couple of restarts. Then just recently, a quick reboot with no changes to drivers or what not and nothing23:22
hazamonzobenri: Display Hardware? You mean a Nvidia GPU?>23:22
hazamonzobenri: As far as the dmesg log... "Nothing has been logged yet"23:23
benrihazamonzo: yeah, nvidia GPU. also do you remember what you did change upon the reboot that killed it?23:23
wevabekks, didnt help23:24
benrihazamonzo: and thats really strange, there should at least be the boot log there...23:24
hazamonzobenri: Yeah the card is a K2100m on a thinkpad W541 (brand new laptop and new 15.10 installation)23:24
kostkonhazamonzo, what about Xorg.0.log23:24
hazamonzobenri: As for changes... all i did was get the system up to date with what a needed (tools for dev and such) and the only only UI thing... was adding some widgets to the desktop23:25
hazamonzokostkon: Let me check. One mo23:25
hazamonzokostkon: ack. remind me wher that log file is :)23:25
benri/etc/X11?23:25
kostkonhazamonzo, /var/log/Xorg.0.log23:25
benrioh23:26
benrioops23:26
wevabekks, these are the images shown in devices in disk utility: http://is.gd/fSnFRD23:26
kostkonhazamonzo, lines with errors start with (EE)23:26
hazamonzokostkon: I was just about to ask what i was looking for23:26
hazamonzoone mo. looking for EE23:26
=== Blaster is now known as Guest87381
kostkonhazamonzo, yeah23:26
bekksweva: PAstebin "df -h" again.23:27
hazamonzokostkon: Nothing with EE although.... i did notice "No enabled display devices found"23:28
hazamonzoUnable to get display device for DPI computation23:28
kostkonhazamonzo, so it seems it's a display problem23:29
hazamonzoIs there a chance i can be having these issues because of the silly 2880x1680 resolution?23:29
kostkonhazamonzo, whats the native res of your monitor23:29
hazamonzo^23:29
kostkonhazamonzo, and you changed to that resolution just before rebooting23:30
kostkonhazamonzo, ?23:30
hazamonzokostkon: 2880x1680(i might be wrong on the verical)23:30
hazamonzoI've never changed the res so far23:30
hazamonzoI installed at that res, then installed the Nvidia 352 drivers for performance issues23:30

thenerdjonesso now i have installed ubuntu server, but it will only boot when i have my usb drive in, it no longer gives me the option to install it is booted with the usb drive in it just takes me to a gnome desktop ( i opted to install ) but without the usb drive in it just sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor, gparted shows 4 partitions, sda1 is / and the 500 gig hard drive, sda2 is the flash23:30
thenerdjonesdrive with "extended" and sda5 is swap, how do i make the hard drive bootable?23:30
hazamonzoworked well for a couple of reboots23:30
hazamonzothen darkness23:30

kostkonhazamonzo, you could use pastebinit to paste your log  for everyone to see23:31
kostkon!pastebinit23:31
ubottupastebinit is the command-line equivalent of !pastebin - Command output, or other text can be redirected to pastebinit, which then reports an URL containing the output - To use pastebinit, install the « pastebinit » package from a package manager - Simple usage: command | pastebinit -b http://paste.ubuntu.com23:31
hazamonzokostkon: Its going to be tough as i only have a basic terminal at the moment :s23:31
wevabekks, http://paste.ubuntu.com/13077351/23:31
kostkonhazamonzo, that's all you need23:32
frostschutzweva, if 'sudo losetup' shows those, try 'sudo losetup /dev/loopX' for the loop device X you no longer need (or losetup -D for all)23:32
hazamonzokostkon: How might i get to pastebin (sorry if that obvious)23:32
frostschutzweva, *sudo losetup -d /dev/loopX23:32
kostkonhazamonzo, see the pastebinit factoid above ^23:32
hazamonzooooooh23:32
hazamonzoi see your pastebin command above23:32
jmaresIs it possible to disable nouveau without rebooting?23:32
hazamonzokostkon: Thanks! (and super useful)23:32
hazamonzogive me a mo23:32
hazamonzoyou want the Xorg.0 log then?23:33
kostkonhazamonzo, paste that first yes23:33
hazamonzokostkon: Okay23:33
wevafrostschutz, they're gone, free space went up to normal. thank you very much!23:34
=== brayden_ is now known as Blaster
thenerdjonesit feels a lot to me like the usb drive is the key to my laptop now, haha23:35
wevabekks, ActionParsnip, thank you!23:36
frostschutzthenerdjones, what does it look like in fdisk -l or parted -l?23:36
hazamonzokostkon: (whew) http://paste.ubuntu.com/13077437/23:38
hazamonzokostkon: No wireless so i had to sit next to the cat5 cable at the router :)23:38
kostkonhazamonzo, let's see23:38
thenerdjonesfrostschutz: nothing on the hard drive has boot ticked, just the usb drive does sda1 is linux 2 is extended and 5 is swap, sdb1 is fat but is bootable23:39
kostkonhazamonzo, does your laptop also have an intel graphics card?23:39
hazamonzokostkon: Well spotted23:39
hazamonzoits has both intel and Nvidi23:40
kostkon!optimus23:40
ubottuThe Bumblebee Project aims to support NVIDIA Optimus technology under Linux. The Bumblebee website can be found at http://bumblebee-project.org/23:40
kostkonnot helpful factoid23:40
hazamonzokostkon: Thats the swapping of cards software right?23:40
kostkonhazamonzo, yes23:40
frostschutzthenerdjones, actual output?23:41
hazamonzokostkon: Is there an issue with the nvidia card being selected on boot or something?23:41
kostkonhazamonzo, theres definitely something wrong with it since it says No monitor specified for screen "nvidia".23:42
hazamonzokostkon: Ha! That doesn't sound good at all!23:42
hazamonzokostkon: So install bumblebee is a good start?23:43
kostkonhazamonzo, looks like there's an extra step to be done yes https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee#Setup_for_14.04_and_later23:43
=== waly is now known as weva
hazamonzokostkon: Okay. That gives me something to google at least! Much appreciated23:45

emitattuoHi everyone, what is the fastest way to copy all files (~30GB) from an SD card?  The fastest I'm getting is 1.7-2.8MB/s using mc, but would rsync or something else work better?  Once I'm done with the SD card, I have to backup 40GB from one computer to another.  I was using a link-local FTP server, but I can't get it to work now, for some reason.23:46
frostschutzemitattuo, mc, cp, rsync, etc. etc. should all be fine, unless the files are very tiny or horribly fragmented for some reason23:48
wevahello again, how can i restore an external drive partition from its dd image file23:49
weva?23:49
daftykinsdd if=/path/to/image of=/dev/sdX bs=(appropriate for image type)23:50
daftykinsnote that (appropriate for image type) is "2M" or something similar that depends on your image format23:50
emitattuofrostschutz, thanks.  It's a combination of hundreds of python scripts as well as some larger files (140MB) and random files from a backed-up home directory.23:51
wevadaftykins, it is a file in "image.dd" format, would BS be a specific number, i.e. 4096?23:53
baiterhope you mean sftp not ftp23:53
frostschutzweva, bs=1M is fine, unless you have a good reason to use something else23:53
daftykinsweva: but an image of what23:54
frostschutzweva, cp works fine too, cp /path/to/image /dev/partition23:54
wevadaftykins, it is an image of a partition, the file type of which I assigned as "linux luks" via testdisk23:57
wevanow I'd like to create a partition again, to see if I get a proper luks one23:58
daftykinspartition, not disk eh... hmm.23:58
wevabecause it was a properly created partition, but it turned into "unknown" when plugged in at the next session23:58
wevaso I created an image of this problem partition. but i dont remember if it was the image or the real partition that I assigned the file type. maybe it doesn't matter?23:59
ajacmachey, does anyone here know how to get pygame installed on python 3.7 on lubuntu 15.10?23:59
