=== DalekSec_ is now known as DalekSec [07:11] Mornings [07:43] ohi who_da_fly [07:43] morning everyone [08:20] hi Kilos [08:20] hi theblazehen [08:53] Maaz_ seen inetpro [08:53] Kilos: inetpro was last seen 13 hours, 27 minutes and 52 seconds ago in #ubuntu-za on freenode [2015-11-13 11:25:37 PST], and has been online on freenode since 2015-11-13 21:47:18 PST [09:04] oom Kilos, he's here [09:04] good mornings [09:04] hi inetpro did you get some rain [09:05] we havent had 1 mm yet [09:05] uh.... a few drops [09:05] eish [09:11] Still getting some here :) [10:03] Looks like rain here [12:16] Hello South African Ubuntans. I hope you're enjoying your summer more than I am enjoying our winter. [12:16] In January: http://na.pycon.org [12:17] would love to meet some ZA open-source people there [16:19] hi EvilDMP [16:32] I'm making as many files as I can.. [16:36] ls | wc -l [16:36] 9458903 [16:44] eish! [16:44] how can I make Ubuntu Trusty stop doing lookups of AAAA records when doing DNS queries? [16:45] inetpro: Do you have an IPv6 address? WHy do you need to stop the lookup? [16:46] * inetpro noticed this strange behaviour starting with Ubuntu 12.04 [16:46] I always disable IPv6 because we our network does not support it on the WAN [16:47] if I do a name lookup with 'host google.com' while watching 'tcpdump -ne dst port 53' I see three lookups: [16:47] A? google.com., AAAA? google.com. and MX? google.com. [16:48] not a major train smash but just wondering why and how I could disable it [16:49] s/we our/our/ [16:50] related bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1092691 [16:52] It shouldn't be a problem unless your computer tries to access it via IPv6 however? Hvae you tested, perhaps eg. firefox will only lookup only the A record? Might be 'host' itself doing the multiple queries? [16:54] haven't noticed any performance issues because of it... just picked it up when monitoring DNS queries on one of our web servers [16:55] oh and that still being on Ubuntu 12.04 [16:55] If it's just the lookup, then it shouldn't have any impact. Or am I missing something? [16:56] Well, 12.04 is LTS [16:56] and after a bit of research still see the same behaviour on 14.04 [16:56] well yes it is just a lookup but is it really necessary? [16:57] inetpro: Shouldn't be, just thinking that there's probably other areas that are also inefficient [16:57] true [16:58] Same behaviour on Arch [17:00] another debate around the same issue: http://serverfault.com/questions/632665/how-to-disable-aaaa-lookups [17:03] at least we do not have 70 million name resolutions like others have [17:04] Yeah, have you considered using dnsmasq or something for DNS caching? [17:04] hello [17:04] Hi Audioburn [17:04] what is it like living in SA [17:05] za* [17:05] It has good parts, and it's bad parts. Overall, it's alright [17:35] good evening [17:40] hi magespawn [17:55] Hello Kilos [18:12] i found this a little while ago http://www.allitebooks.com/ [18:12] seems okay so far [18:24] there does seem to be some question about that site [18:30] magespawn: Seems nice [18:48] not too sure about the legality though [19:16] night all. sleep tight [19:17] see you tomorrow [19:40] Bye! See you all in a weeks time.
