daftykinswifi channel # used by the AP, bbra00:31
daftykins"iwlist scan" may be of use too00:31

pheonix99workbbra, try a different wifi channel for your network, see if it sees it.00:34
bbraWhat does that mean?00:34
pheonix99workalso, have you rebooted your router?00:34
bbraThis is the first time ever i am working with wlan.00:34
daftykinsbbra: on the ISM band, (2.4GHz) wireless access points / routers must pick a channel number from 1 to 13 or 14 - not all can be seen by all devices.00:34
bbraI get the technic behind it, but i never used it, so how do i tell what is is use?00:35
pheonix99workYou'll have to get into your wireless router to change the channels.00:35
minitruehey anyone using pandoc?00:35
daftykinsbbra: the web admin pages of the router will say the number... haha00:36
bbraI dont want to change something in the router, all other devices do work fine.00:36
bbraIts not mine, so i dont wont to fiddle with the router.00:36
daftykinsjust check it.00:37

daftykinsrogger_h: either the sites aren't enabled or you've configured them incorrectly.00:45
daftykinsread the logs to find out what's wrong.00:46
bazhang#nginx rogger_h00:46
rogger_hyes but i dont know what i did wrong00:46
bbraI dont have access to the router right now so i need to rely on the information in my memory. My house is 20 minutes away from the laptops owner.00:46
daftykinsbbra: then we can't help00:46
rogger_hon #nginx is even WORSE, the thing is same configs working on another server00:46
rogger_hso im not that sure its nginx misconfiguration00:46
bazhangbbra, perhaps the issue is that the router was set to hide the access point00:46
bbraI need help on what to do and then a get back there and do it.00:46
daftykinsbbra: we can't help with something that's not in front of you really; as we've said we need more info from the real situation to advise00:47
bbraNo it was not, checked anything.00:47
daftykinsi don't understand that sentence00:47
bbraTell me how you would handle it then.00:47
bazhangbbra, how can you possibly check from such a great distance00:47
bbraI got home after gaving up there, simple.00:48
daftykinsyou can't scan for a wireless network 20 mins away...00:48
bazhangbeing able to hands on with the network is key here bbra00:48
daftykinsbbra: do you own your own laptop, or a smartphone perhaps that can have a program installed to check networks and what channels they're on?00:49
bazhang20 minutes away is much further than hands on00:49
zuippobbra: if the laptop can connect to other networks (try one at your home) then it's either hidden SSID or the channel doesn't work so you have to change it in the router. You can't do anything right now00:49
OerHeksbbra, when your SSID does not show up, disable wlan, go into keys & passwords, remove the wlan key entry, and enablewlan again, etc00:50
* OerHeks seen that before00:50
daftykinsah har00:50
bbraOkey in other words: The laptop worked for months without problems, now the ssid it used to connect to is gone. The hardware is checked, other oses work as they should, the 60 old owner never touched a thing so the settings are 100% certain okay. what would be your steps to research it?00:50
daftykinswe already told you00:51
daftykinsyou seem to be ignoring all input00:51
bazhangif it's someone else's there's no way to access anything00:51
OerHeksprobably in many channels ..00:51
bazhangyou need a direct wire to access it00:51
zuippobbra: did you try to connect to a different network with the laptop?00:51
bbraOerHeks where is this keys and password thing?00:53
bbraI purged settings already, but i might misset one.00:53
OerHekson Unity > systemsettings00:53
daftykinsyou know, my own network is often hidden beneath the networks list under "more networks" also00:54
bbraThis one used to be autoconnet, so it wont be so far.00:54
bbraIts xfce OerHeks00:55
bazhangbbra, get in range and test again, withe the multiple advice already given00:55
OerHeksi don't know the xfce menu, keys & passwords is universal, search for it.00:56
bbraYour advice was to find out the channel right? Tell me why is that important, it never changed at all.00:56
mil1iGetting a PCIe wifi card to work with Ubuntu was ridiculous! Lol00:56
bazhangbbra, you said you are at a great distance now00:56
daftykinsmil1i: that's not a rule, maybe just the model you got is badly supported00:56
bazhangbbra, how can you test anything at this range00:57
daftykinsbbra: you don't know that, a lot of routers are on 'automatic' channel selection and thus would hop when powered off / rebooted00:57
mil1iMaybe that was it. It was an Asus PCIe card00:57
bbraAre you talking about the gnome keyring OerHeks?00:57
daftykinsit'd make more sense to accept that in computing topics, you assume nothing and *check*, *check*, then *check again*00:57
bbraWell it works when booting an other partition, it MUST be the laptops settings then. So i dont get why you want me to check the router.00:59
daftykinsright because another OS may not be tied to the same regulatory domain for channel selection00:59
daftykinslook, instead of fighting free advice... write it down and go try again00:59
bazhangget in range first01:00
bbraDude its Deep night here.01:00
bbraI cant wake her up to fix her computer.01:00
NetesGood Evening everybody01:01
bazhangbbra, you cannot fix it from this distance, what you are asking is simply not possible under present conditions01:02
pheonix99workbbra, there isn't anything you or any of us can do without you being in front of the computer01:02
bbraI ask for steps to fix it, not for the actual fix.01:03
bbraBecause i am simply lost.01:03
bazhangbbra, we have given those many times now01:03
bazhangbbra, all of them require a proximate fixable distance01:03
bbraNo you have given one, that is to check the wlan channel, and this cant be the proble,.01:03
OerHeksthe user sleeps, you are lost, we have answered.01:04
pheonix99workbbra, if you're in a country that has channels 12-14 enabled on the router, but the driver isn't working for those channels, changing channesl to 1-11 may be your answer.  As said above, if the router is set to auto channel, it could have changed to channels 12-1401:04
zuippobbra: why not?01:04
bbraBecause i only need to ram in a live cd and it works, so i need to find out where the difference between the live cd and the install is.01:05
pheonix99workYou said another OS earlier, you never specified it was a live cd.  I personally assumed it was Windows.01:07
pheonix99workAlso, it was suggested earlier to clear the keys or something related to that.  Those won't be stored on your live CD01:07
pheonix99workYou can also look through /var/log/messages, dmesg, and all the other logs on the system to see if something is throwing an error.01:08
bbraYea, indeed keys are my gues, i know that is a frequent nm-applet bug. But i already removed all settings i could think of.01:08
bbraI never heard of an error message that signals that a specific ssid is not found,  that makes absolute no sense to me.01:11
pheonix99workYou asked for suggestions, I'm just throwing them out.  I have no idea what model wireless nic you have, and I'm not going to go researching it for you.01:12
pheonix99workIf you're not happy with free support, I suggest looking elsewhere.01:12
bbraI cant check anyway.01:12

pheonix99workthat's why channels have been suggested.01:15
pheonix99workand another:  http://askubuntu.com/questions/236091/cant-see-wifi-ssid01:15
pheonix99workfrom that last link: "I recently had this problem and solved it changing the CHANNEL of my wifi router to 10, Looks like there were too many ssid's in my previous channel..."01:16
bbraSo the problem could be that the driver only allows one channel, the router switched now to the unsupported.01:18
bbraThen the live disk may use i different driver version....01:18
pheonix99workThis is very possible due to software updates.01:19

dougbbRJ45: do you actually have an ecdsa key?06:02
dougbbor a plain dsa key?06:03
RJ45I'm not sure06:03
jcadduonohi guys i've been trying for hours to find a way to execute a shell script in screen over ssh, but it just seems impossible: ssh user@host -f "screen -dmS dostuff /home/user/dostuff.sh" that does...nothing at all06:03
RJ45dougbb: in the paste I changed it to "debug1: Server host key: ECDSA de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef"06:04
dougbbRJ45: what's in ~/.ssh on machine1 ?06:04
dougbbjcadduono: what is your purpose for trying to use screen there? what are you trying to accomplish?06:05

RJ45authorized_keys  id_dsa  id_dsa.pub  id_rsa  id_rsa.pub  known_hosts  old bak06:06
dougbbRJ45: ok ... did you create the dsa key on purpose, or was it something that the guide said you should do?06:06
jcadduonodougbb: i want to execute a script on another server in a screen session i can connect to later on, since the sh script goes on for a few hours06:06
RJ45I'm honestly not sure where that came from06:06
RJ45what does the dsa key do?06:07
dougbbjcadduono: do you want to "connect" to it because it's interactive, or because you need to see the results?06:07
dougbbRJ45: right now it's just confusing the issue :)   try moving those two dsa files out of ~/.ssh  for now06:07
jcadduonodougbb: i don't care to see the results at the time, i want to be able to check on it later on though by connecting through ssh and using screen -r06:08

dougbbjcadduono: stop focusing on screen :)   focus on what you're trying to accomplish if you could use screen06:09
dougbbjcadduono: is your script interactive, or do you just want to see the results?06:09
dougbb(where results could be things that are being printed out by the script as it runs)06:09
jcadduonodougbb: the script is not interactive at all, i just wanna check on how its going once in a while in case there is an error06:09

RJ45I'll try re-transferring the key from machine 1 to machine 206:11
fullstackhow do I install the kernel headers?06:11
jcadduonodougbb: i could just do "ssh user@host SOMEVAR=something /home/user/dostuff.sh" and that would run the entire thing just fine...but i can't keep the ssh connection open for 3 hours, that's why i really want to use screen06:12
daftykinsuname -r; apt install linux-headers-x.x.x=06:12
daftykinsuname -r; apt install linux-headers-x.x.x-##-generic06:12
daftykinsusually they're already there06:13
RJ45dougbb: did it, no change in behaviour06:13
dougbbjcadduono: you don't need screen for that, you can use nohup06:13

fullstackoh.. where are kernel headers stored?06:14

fullstackhello9, the problems are multiple. You can run open source software on a rooted iphone, but there isn't a big enough community to keep the toolchain up to date and user base for the applications. samsrutiHi guys14:03

badbodhhi samsruti14:04
centrichu samsruti14:04
Seveascentric: this is a good place to spend time, I've been here since 2004 :) But beware that this channel is for support only. For other topics we have #ubuntu-offtopic.14:04
samsrutiHi i was trying to help Dekko Team14:04
badbodh!kernel | centric14:04
ubottucentric: The core of Ubuntu is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, and if you need to troubleshoot issues, you can try a !Mainline kernel instead, but if you insist, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile (see also !Stages)14:04
samsrutibut i am facing a problem14:04
Seveascentric: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade will update the kernel to the latest one in the repos for your Ubuntu version14:04

Seveassamsruti: sudo apt-get install libconnectivity-qt1-dev14:05
centricbut wanted to use 4.3.0 for my vivid14:05
asuiobadbodh: BTW i did remove grub-common service and Rc14:05
samsrutimcphail can you name it14:06
Seveascentric: best upgrade to wily. vivid will be unsupported in a month anyway.14:06
mcphailsamsruti: i think it is simply #dekko14:06
badbodhasuio, you've lost me entirely :)14:06
badbodhstart again, state your problem from beginning. i see some folks have come alive here14:06
samsruticool :D14:06
samsrutiyeah i am doing that again from beginning14:06
centricwell i dont have any upgrade experience, will upgrading from vivid to wily will lost my data?14:07
Seveascentric: no, your data will be fine if you follow the upgrade procedure14:07
badbodhcentric, if you don;t have separate /home partition, you -may- lose stuff, although in theory you shouldn;t14:07
mcphailcentric: it shouldn't, but always make sure you have a backup14:07
Seveassudo do-release-upgrade14:07
badbodh+1 to backup, +1 to duplicity \o/14:08

Seveasbadbodh: meh. rsync :P14:08
asuioany one there knows how to edit the fstab file for the /cdrom mount point?14:09
mcphailcentric: In the 10+ years I've used Ubuntu, I have never lost data in an upgrade. But backup anyway14:09
badbodhsure, got rsync too :) haven't automated it yet. dup handles regular backup on mine14:09

badbodhshould be in the release notes14:10
mcphailcentric: see the command Seveas gave you14:10
k1lcentric: upgrades get automated testing before the release. and it should not delete any data from the disk.14:10
Seveascentric: sudo do-release-upgrade14:10
badbodhal-bloody-ways read release notes first -.-14:10
sylvainchello there, I am having an issue with my trusty (14.04) ubuntu where i cannot make secure network requests to google.com. It seems to come from the fact that the latest ca-certificates package is too old. Is there a way to install latest certificates?14:10
centricty seveas14:10
asuioiwe removed the /etc/init.d/grub-common file is that something with /cdrom error?14:10
Seveassylvainc: sudo apt-get install ca-certificates14:10
centricanyways , i'm just wondering if anyone can give me instructions to kernel recompilation14:11
Seveasthe ca-certificates package in 14.04 is fine. If you have ssl errors even with that installed, you may have a bigger problem (your traffic being intercepted)14:11
sylvaincSeveas: yes, thanks, it is up to date for the distribution, but too old (20141019)14:11
Seveas!info ca-certificates trusty14:11

nitishhow can I update gnome-shell?14:11
mcphailcentric: just follow the instructions in the kernel tarball. But there is little or no need to compile a kernel these days14:11
badbodhasuio, you really need to start with what changes you made right before this problem came up. your case isn;t default behaviour in ubuntu or any distro for that matter14:12
Seveasnitish: sudo apt-get upgrade14:12
sylvaincif i copy certificates from another newer linux distribution, then run dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates, then the google certificte is accepted and i can make my request14:12
_ACID_how can I  use start-stop-daemon for .bin ?14:12
k1lnitish: get a PPA with a new version in it. ubuntu will not upgrade the version in one release.14:12
nitishSevas: I don't want to update everything.14:12
Seveasnitish: why not?14:13
centricmcphail: how can i upgrade my 4.0.0 generic kernel to 4.3.0 from https://www.kernel.org/ this link?14:13
Seveasyou don't like bugfixes and security fixes?14:13
itx_ACID_: what do you mean by .bin?14:13
centricand not from official ubuntu?14:13
k1lcentric: use the mainline kernels14:13
nitishSeveas: can't affoard 490 MB data. net speed is not enogh here right now.14:13
Seveassylvainc: maybe your local certificats got damaged somehow. sudo apt-get install --reinstall ca-certificates14:13
k1lcentric: or you compile the kernels yourself.14:13
mcphailcentric: as I said, download the kernel tarball and follow the instructions packed inside. it is easy enough to do. But Ubuntu builds mainline kernels for you anyway14:13
mcphail!mainline | centric14:14
ubottucentric: The kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds14:14

CharcoalfireBashing-om: "Reinstallation of xserver-xorg-video-intel is not possible, it cannot be downloaded."23:13
AudaxNovusWhat is Braille Device Support and why does my machine always hang on it when booting up in recovery mode and such23:14
amz3héllo, is there a way to read a pdf with a DRM on ubuntu?23:14
AudaxNovusI first saw it when I installed lubuntu-desktop23:14
Bashing-omCharcoalfire: K; .. HWE ?? show 'lsb_release -a ; uname -r ' .23:14
daftykinsAudaxNovus: support for braille devices of course, you know what braille is? i'm sure you could remove related packages if they're really causing trouble.23:15

MannyLNJstill stiuck with openvpn. I have an .ovpn file now but don't know what to do next any assistance is appeciated23:20
daftykinsMannyLNJ: apparently opening up network manager has a way to just open it up directly23:20
Bashing-omCharcoalfire: Let's work on this .. you have 'raring's ' kerenl .. maybe we should get ya up on trusty's before installing the graphic's driver . What results ' sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ' ?23:21
MannyLNJdaftykins, yes thats what I thought but netwok mnager on't open it when i chose a saved config23:21
AudaxNovusAnybody know anything about Braille Device Support?23:21
AudaxNovusI literally can't do anything right now and it's been hanging on it for hours23:21
AudaxNovus"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem."23:22
AudaxNovusSo I run it23:22
AudaxNovusDoes some stuff23:22
AudaxNovusThen it does:23:22
tilpnerHello, I have a problem (duh). My laptop freezes while trying to configure bumblebee. Does this ring any bells?23:22
daftykinsAudaxNovus: so you *are* trying to use it? you didn't reply to my message23:22
AudaxNovus[    Ok    ] Started Braille Device Support23:22
AudaxNovusStarting Braille Device Support.... *STUCK HERE*23:23
tilpnerWhen I force a shutdown, the next thing dpkg will do, is ask me to continue the process (dpkg --configure -a), which will of course freeze again.23:23
AudaxNovusdaftykins: No, I'm not23:23
k1l_tilpner: dont use bumblebee. its deprecated.23:23
daftykinsAudaxNovus: so remove the affected packages23:23
k1l_tilpner: nvidia-prime now supports hybrid cards officially23:23
AudaxNovusI'm really not, I just want it to continue so I can use apt because when I run any apt command it gives me that same thing23:23
AudaxNovusSo I can't remove it23:23
AudaxNovusAffected packages are brltty23:23
AudaxNovusWhen I run "sudo apt-get remove brltty"23:23
AudaxNovusI get this:23:24
tilpnerk1l_ - Oh, interesting. Can nvidia-prime do switching without logging out?23:24
AudaxNovus"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem."23:24
AudaxNovusAnd when I run that, it hangs on this same package I23:24
AudaxNovusI'm trying to remove23:24
AudaxNovusIt's so illogical23:24
k1l_tilpner: i dont have a nvidia myself, but it should iirc.23:24
MannyLNJdaftykins, it lets me open the file but not save it to the list of vpns23:24
AudaxNovusI want it to gtfo my computer is what I want and if apt would work without requiring me to use it23:24
daftykinsAudaxNovus: sudo dpkg -r brltty23:25
daftykinsAudaxNovus: alright, calm down... getting uppity won't help anything23:25
tilpnerk1l_ - I was quite satisfied that Ubuntu supported the Skylake integrated graphics by default, and installing the proprietary NVidia drivers was easy too, but it always required re-logging. I'm going to try nvidia-prime.23:25
AudaxNovusSorry fam but this stupid program should've jogged on 3 hours ago yeah23:25
tilpner(Now I just have to figure how to get to the login screen again)23:25
daftykinsAudaxNovus: cut the stupid street talk online, thanks.23:26

AudaxNovusNo thanks23:27
Adam12356Hi guys... can anyone assist me? (Hoping this is the right channel) I had to decompress a ".run" file in order to fix a certain bug, but now I have no idea how to turn this folder into an executable23:28
CharcoalfireBashing-om: By using the raring kernel and not the trusty kernel, do you mean you think I should upgrade to 14.04? I've asked about that in here before and been told I shouldn't do that.23:28
Adam12356turn this folder back into* an executable (.run). It's a Displaylink driver if anyone is wondering.23:28
tilpnerAlso, what would cause Ubuntu unable to completely shutdown or even reboot? It keeps waiting forever after having turned off everything, except... it doesn't actually shut down the machine.23:29
tilpner*Ubuntu to be unable23:29
daftykinsAdam12356: i don't think that's an apt way to install anything of that kind on ubuntu23:29

daftykinsAdam12356: so this is some kind of display connecting over USB or similar? that post refers to elementary, so i hope you're not using that23:35
Adam12356daftykins: I am using Elementary OS, but it's based on Ubuntu, so I figured I could ask here. It's one of those "Docks" for laptops that you plug into your laptop and it adds a display port for all of your external displays23:36
daftykinsAdam12356: i'm afraid not.23:37
ubottuElementary OS is an Ubuntu derivative which is supported in their IRC channel #elementary on irc.freenode.net - http://elementaryos.org/ for more information on this distribution.23:37

r_riosHello. I just updated to Kubuntu 15.10, but Plasma won't start up. LightDM shows up, but it gets stuck at the splash screen. GNOME runs just fine23:40

k1l_r_rios: kde uses ssdm iirc now23:41
