daftykins"iwlist scan" may be of use too00:31

pheonix99workbbra, try a different wifi channel for your network, see if it sees it.00:34
bbraWhat does that mean?00:34
pheonix99workalso, have you rebooted your router?00:34
bbraThis is the first time ever i am working with wlan.00:34
daftykinsbbra: on the ISM band, (2.4GHz) wireless access points / routers must pick a channel number from 1 to 13 or 14 - not all can be seen by all devices.00:34
bbraI get the technic behind it, but i never used it, so how do i tell what is is use?00:35
pheonix99workYou'll have to get into your wireless router to change the channels.00:35
minitruehey anyone using pandoc?00:35
daftykinsbbra: the web admin pages of the router will say the number... haha00:36
bbraI dont want to change something in the router, all other devices do work fine.00:36
bbraIts not mine, so i dont wont to fiddle with the router.00:36

rogger_hon #nginx is even WORSE, the thing is same configs working on another server00:46
rogger_hso im not that sure its nginx misconfiguration00:46
bazhangbbra, perhaps the issue is that the router was set to hide the access point00:46
bbraI need help on what to do and then a get back there and do it.00:46
daftykinsbbra: we can't help with something that's not in front of you really; as we've said we need more info from the real situation to advise00:47
bbraNo it was not, checked anything.00:47
daftykinsi don't understand that sentence00:47
bbraTell me how you would handle it then.00:47
bazhangbbra, how can you possibly check from such a great distance00:47
bbraI got home after gaving up there, simple.00:48
daftykinsyou can't scan for a wireless network 20 mins away...00:48
bazhangbeing able to hands on with the network is key here bbra00:48
daftykinsbbra: do you own your own laptop, or a smartphone perhaps that can have a program installed to check networks and what channels they're on?00:49
bazhang20 minutes away is much further than hands on00:49
zuippobbra: if the laptop can connect to other networks (try one at your home) then it's either hidden SSID or the channel doesn't work so you have to change it in the router. You can't do anything right now00:49
OerHeksbbra, when your SSID does not show up, disable wlan, go into keys & passwords, remove the wlan key entry, and enablewlan again, etc00:50
* OerHeks seen that before00:50
daftykinsah har00:50
bbraOkey in other words: The laptop worked for months without problems, now the ssid it used to connect to is gone. The hardware is checked, other oses work as they should, the 60 old owner never touched a thing so the settings are 100% certain okay. what would be your steps to research it?00:50
daftykinswe already told you00:51
daftykinsyou seem to be ignoring all input00:51
bazhangif it's someone else's there's no way to access anything00:51
OerHeksprobably in many channels ..00:51
mil1iHello00:51
bazhangyou need a direct wire to access it00:51
zuippobbra: did you try to connect to a different network with the laptop?00:51
bbraOerHeks where is this keys and password thing?00:53
bbraI purged settings already, but i might misset one.00:53
OerHekson Unity > systemsettings00:53
daftykinsyou know, my own network is often hidden beneath the networks list under "more networks" also00:54
bbraThis one used to be autoconnet, so it wont be so far.00:54
bbraIts xfce OerHeks00:55
bazhangbbra, get in range and test again, withe the multiple advice already given00:55
OerHeksi don't know the xfce menu, keys & passwords is universal, search for it.00:56
bbraYour advice was to find out the channel right? Tell me why is that important, it never changed at all.00:56
mil1iGetting a PCIe wifi card to work with Ubuntu was ridiculous! Lol00:56
bazhangbbra, you said you are at a great distance now00:56
daftykinsmil1i: that's not a rule, maybe just the model you got is badly supported00:56
bazhangbbra, how can you test anything at this range00:57
daftykinsbbra: you don't know that, a lot of routers are on 'automatic' channel selection and thus would hop when powered off / rebooted00:57
mil1iMaybe that was it. It was an Asus PCIe card00:57
bbraAre you talking about the gnome keyring OerHeks?00:57
daftykinsit'd make more sense to accept that in computing topics, you assume nothing and *check*, *check*, then *check again*00:57
bbraWell it works when booting an other partition, it MUST be the laptops settings then. So i dont get why you want me to check the router.00:59
daftykinsright because another OS may not be tied to the same regulatory domain for channel selection00:59
daftykinslook, instead of fighting free advice... write it down and go try again00:59
bazhangget in range first01:00
bbraDude its Deep night here.01:00
bbraI cant wake her up to fix her computer.01:00
NetesGood Evening everybody01:01
bazhangbbra, you cannot fix it from this distance, what you are asking is simply not possible under present conditions01:02
pheonix99workbbra, there isn't anything you or any of us can do without you being in front of the computer01:02
bbraI ask for steps to fix it, not for the actual fix.01:03
bbraBecause i am simply lost.01:03
bazhangbbra, we have given those many times now01:03
bazhangbbra, all of them require a proximate fixable distance01:03
bbraNo you have given one, that is to check the wlan channel, and this cant be the proble,.01:03
OerHeksthe user sleeps, you are lost, we have answered.01:04
pheonix99workbbra, if you're in a country that has channels 12-14 enabled on the router, but the driver isn't working for those channels, changing channesl to 1-11 may be your answer.  As said above, if the router is set to auto channel, it could have changed to channels 12-1401:04
zuippobbra: why not?01:04
bbraBecause i only need to ram in a live cd and it works, so i need to find out where the difference between the live cd and the install is.01:05
pheonix99workYou said another OS earlier, you never specified it was a live cd.  I personally assumed it was Windows.01:07
pheonix99workAlso, it was suggested earlier to clear the keys or something related to that.  Those won't be stored on your live CD01:07
pheonix99workYou can also look through /var/log/messages, dmesg, and all the other logs on the system to see if something is throwing an error.01:08
bbraYea, indeed keys are my gues, i know that is a frequent nm-applet bug. But i already removed all settings i could think of.01:08
bbraI never heard of an error message that signals that a specific ssid is not found,  that makes absolute no sense to me.01:11
pheonix99workYou asked for suggestions, I'm just throwing them out.  I have no idea what model wireless nic you have, and I'm not going to go researching it for you.01:12
pheonix99workIf you're not happy with free support, I suggest looking elsewhere.01:12
bbraI cant check anyway.01:12

pheonix99workthat's why channels have been suggested.01:15
pheonix99workand another:  http://askubuntu.com/questions/236091/cant-see-wifi-ssid01:15
pheonix99workfrom that last link: "I recently had this problem and solved it changing the CHANNEL of my wifi router to 10, Looks like there were too many ssid's in my previous channel..."01:16
bbraSo the problem could be that the driver only allows one channel, the router switched now to the unsupported.01:18
bbraThen the live disk may use i different driver version....01:18
pheonix99workThis is very possible due to software updates.01:19

RJ45this guide  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/OpenSSH/Keys  should really be made more clear that ' ssh-add ' is required05:40
dan34alright05:40
fullstackdan34: your google fu isn't as good as mine05:40
dougbbRJ45: file a bug report :)05:40
fullstackdan34: here http://askubuntu.com/questions/697448/ubuntu-14-04-install-firmare-released-for-ath10k-pci05:40
RJ45it says to do it in troubleshooting if the response is "Permission denied (publickey)", but that was not my response05:41
dan34fullstack: not at all, thanks05:41
fullstackmy google fu can not be matched.05:41

RJ45okay, slight problem here, I am still unable to connect using public key authentication05:42
dan34fullstack: alright, I'll be careful05:42
RJ45*face-palm*05:42
fullstackRJ45 have I talked to you before?05:43

RJ45maybe, are you on ##networking ##hardware #opennic or #bash ?05:44

RJ45again, I am still unable to connect from machine 1 to machine 2 using a public key05:49
RJ45even after running ssh-add on both machines05:49
dougbbis machine1's key reflected in machine2's authorized_keys file?05:50
RJ45yes, and vice-versa05:50
dougbbok, so run ssh -vvv and paste the results05:50
dougbbor, pastebin I should say05:51
RJ45machine 2 is able to connect to machine 1 with a public key (though it was having troubles before I massed with file permissions)05:51
dougbbyes, we got that :)05:51
RJ45okay I'll do that05:51
dan34it didn't work :(05:52
dan34do you know where I can find backports-ath-2015-11-05.tar.bz2?05:54
dan34it's no longer available at http://filebin.ca/2LVgpjSgiT56/backports-ath-2015-11-05.tar.bz205:54

RJ45err here  http://pastebin.com/9rSC7LGB06:00
dougbbRJ45: do you actually have an ecdsa key?06:02
dougbbor a plain dsa key?06:03
RJ45I'm not sure06:03
jcadduonohi guys i've been trying for hours to find a way to execute a shell script in screen over ssh, but it just seems impossible: ssh user@host -f "screen -dmS dostuff /home/user/dostuff.sh" that does...nothing at all06:03
RJ45dougbb: in the paste I changed it to "debug1: Server host key: ECDSA de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef:de:ad:be:ef"06:04
RJ45lol06:04
dougbbRJ45: what's in ~/.ssh on machine1 ?06:04
dougbbjcadduono: what is your purpose for trying to use screen there? what are you trying to accomplish?06:05
RJ45:~$ ls ~/.ssh06:06
RJ45authorized_keys  id_dsa  id_dsa.pub  id_rsa  id_rsa.pub  known_hosts  old bak06:06
RJ45that06:06
dougbbRJ45: ok ... did you create the dsa key on purpose, or was it something that the guide said you should do?06:06
jcadduonodougbb: i want to execute a script on another server in a screen session i can connect to later on, since the sh script goes on for a few hours06:06
RJ45I'm honestly not sure where that came from06:06
RJ45what does the dsa key do?06:07
dougbbjcadduono: do you want to "connect" to it because it's interactive, or because you need to see the results?06:07
dougbbRJ45: right now it's just confusing the issue :)   try moving those two dsa files out of ~/.ssh  for now06:07
jcadduonodougbb: i don't care to see the results at the time, i want to be able to check on it later on though by connecting through ssh and using screen -r06:08
RJ45k06:08
Extreminadorhow can i search for the directory x ?06:08

fullstackfind ./ -name 'SOMENAME*LALALA*hahah*.txt'06:08
dougbbjcadduono: stop focusing on screen :)   focus on what you're trying to accomplish if you could use screen06:09
dougbbjcadduono: is your script interactive, or do you just want to see the results?06:09
dougbb(where results could be things that are being printed out by the script as it runs)06:09
jcadduonodougbb: the script is not interactive at all, i just wanna check on how its going once in a while in case there is an error06:09
dougbbok06:09
fullstackif it didn't like your authorized_keys 9 times out of 10 its file permissions are to open06:10
tyuiopeIs ubutu06:10
RJ45dougbb: the home on machine 1 is encrypted, but I solved that how the guide said, and machine 2 can connect to it, machine 2's home is not encrypted, so I set that up how the guide says06:10
RJ45I'll try re-transferring the key from machine 1 to machine 206:11
fullstackhow do I install the kernel headers?06:11
jcadduonodougbb: i could just do "ssh user@host SOMEVAR=something /home/user/dostuff.sh" and that would run the entire thing just fine...but i can't keep the ssh connection open for 3 hours, that's why i really want to use screen06:12
daftykinsuname -r; apt install linux-headers-x.x.x=06:12
daftykinsoops06:12
daftykinsuname -r; apt install linux-headers-x.x.x-##-generic06:12
daftykinsusually they're already there06:13
RJ45dougbb: did it, no change in behaviour06:13
dougbbjcadduono: you don't need screen for that, you can use nohup06:13
dougbbRJ45: do ls -lR ~/.ssh on machine206:13
fullstackoh.. where are kernel headers stored?06:14
daftykinsdpkg -L <header-package-name>06:14
jcadduonodougbb: are you saying it is impossible to use screen for the task? i really don't want to have to tail -f06:15

dougbband what are the permissions for the directory itself?06:16
RJ45OerHeks: sorry but it seemed a bit silly to make a pastebin for a paste so small06:16
dougbbjcadduono: there is nothing wrong with tail -f06:16
jcadduonodougbb: ok now it's an interactive script06:16

dougbbyou haven't ... you're following guides instead of understanding what you're doing :)   That's a problem that can only be solved by experience, unfortunately06:25
RJ45before I chmod it, I want to understand, what is the problem?, I have no problem accessing anything in my home directory as the user06:25
dougbbdo you know what those permissions mean?06:25
RJ45vaguely, I know chmod 777 is party time for everyone :P06:26
dougbbwell there you go06:26
dougbbthat's very insecure, and ssh is all about security06:27
RJ45heheh06:27
RJ45what confuses me is how machine 2 got so messed-up in the first place06:27

You can run open source software on a rooted iphone, but there isn't a big enough community to keep the toolchain up to date and user base for the applications. nitishhow can I update gnome-shell?14:11
mcphailcentric: just follow the instructions in the kernel tarball. But there is little or no need to compile a kernel these days14:11

Seveassylvainc: maybe your local certificats got damaged somehow. sudo apt-get install --reinstall ca-certificates14:13
k1lcentric: or you compile the kernels yourself.14:13
mcphailcentric: as I said, download the kernel tarball and follow the instructions packed inside. it is easy enough to do. But Ubuntu builds mainline kernels for you anyway14:13

qzio_Hi, I've installed docker from their repo, and would like to extend the /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/docker.service  according to documentation for systemd, this should be done by adding a docker.service.d/ directory in /etc/systemd/system/, and a docker.service file in that directory. EriC^^it'll find the kernels and relate them to whatever os is booted18:14
sruliEriC^^: say i make another boot part for luks2, how would i then update-grub? just mount luks2 while booted in luks 1?18:14
EriC^^sruli: you could add a menu entry in /etc/grub.d/40_custom and make it a replica of the os one, but use a different uuid for the other root partition18:14
EriC^^it wouldn't update the kernel in the grub menu though, you'd have to change it if you want to boot newer kernels18:15
sruliEriC^^: if 2 boot parts is the right way to do it, i dont mind making 2 boot parts, i just want to know the correct way to update grub for this18:15
EriC^^i guess 2 boots would be nicer18:16
sruliEriC^^: i will make a quick install now on a SSD to test,  how would u advice to update grub?18:18
EriC^^sruli: i think you can encrypt the disk fully18:18
EriC^^that is, have no separate /boot partition,18:18
^Phantom^I have been idle here for years.18:19
^Phantom^Will part soon. Downsizing irc presence a bit.18:19
EriC^^sruli: mount sda5 at /mnt then copy the contents to /boot, and remove /boot from /etc/fstab18:19
sruliEriC^^: i would love to encrypt full disk but i also have windows18:19
EriC^^sruli: then in /etc/default/grub add GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y18:20
sruliEriC^^: what would that do?18:20
EriC^^sruli: that's fine18:20
EriC^^that would have /boot inside the luks partition18:21
EriC^^so no separate boot and each install has it's own /boot18:21
makapakahi all18:22
sruliEriC^^: sounds good, will that still allow booting windows and each os seperate luks part?18:23
boxmeinhey18:27
sruliEriC^^: i will install 2 distros now without creating boot part, however what do i need to do to update-grub while booted in luks1? just mount luks218:27

CharcoalfireI purged nvidia-304, stopped lightdm, and installed nouveau drivers on Ubuntu 12.04. Rebooted, restarted lightdm, and it's stuck on starting TiMidity and Alsa. I tried reinstalling nvidia-304, but it said I needed fix-missing, so I tried that and it did a bunch of failed to fetch errors. I have an Intel card, not a nvidia card, and with nvidia-304 I can't run openGL, which is why I purged it. But now I can't use my computer. So, what do I do now?22:41
