AsachThanks... The thing is I am just a day old on Linux so please take it easy on me... I have installed latest version of Kubuntu and the problem I am having is while watching videos on browsers, after 5 minutes of not moving a cursor, I automatically get logged out. I checked the power option and made the necessary changes but the issue still persists. Surprisingly, even when I get logged out, the Audio (of the video) still plays at th10:21

Asachhateball: I am on 15.10, I also referred to the userguide before coming here10:23
hateballAsach: I was just asking, details always help. I am assuming this is on a laptop?10:25
hateballI am not running 15.10 currently so I can't check what power options might be messed up10:26

jubo2Is there a command to copy all files, including .dotfiles and .dotdirectories from /media/username/UUIDgoeshere to ~18:12
Kwaadpeppercp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/{*,.*} ~ -R18:12
Kwaadpepperwith a sudo maybe18:13
jubo2Kwaadpepper: I noticed [regexgoeshere] in the cli commands. at least ls and cp18:13
jubo2I don't know what this notation means {*,.*}18:14
jubo2is it a list with 2 items ?18:14
Kwaadpepperusing {.txt, .mp3} is better i think18:14
jubo2ah itis18:14
Kwaadpepperit means18:14
Kwaadpepperall hidden files and all18:14
Kwaadpepperit avoids doing on command twice18:15
Kwaadpeppercp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/* ~ -R18:15
Kwaadpeppercp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/.* ~ -R18:15
Kwaadpepperremenber this syntax its really poweful :)18:16
jubo2Yeah... I got 140GB of stuff in my /home18:17
jubo2I wonder..18:18
Kwaadpepperlol, i'm close to it too, i find this normal18:18
jubo2Got 280GB for /home18:18
jubo2and 20GB for /-partition18:18
Kwaadpepperi have a sdd and mech which is used for /home18:18
jubo2and 8 for swap18:19
Kwaadpepper8 for swap is overkilled is it ?18:19
jubo2and 170GB for MSFT NTFS18:19
Kwaadpepperarghhh ntfs, i'm melting ..my...eyes !!18:19
jubo2Kwaadpepper: I dunno. I'm just repeating what I've heard to make it as large as you RAM is18:19
jubo2if it reaches even 50% RAM / 50% SWAP the computer gonna become inusable18:20
jubo2so no point putting more than urr RAM size18:20
Kwaadpepperthis is bullshit in my opinion18:20
Kwaadpepper2GB is suffisent18:21
Kwaadpepperreally you would need more i you haved like 500mb ram18:21
jubo2Kwaadpepper: and I put so the NTFS and the /home-dir next to each other18:21
Kwaadpepperand a great ssd18:21
jubo2this way I can resize in both directions coz there is no 20GB /-partition stopping you from moving the border of the filesystems in both directions if need may arise18:22
KwaadpepperWell have in mind that / is not supposed to grow a lot, while /home is18:22
Kwaadpeppereg: having steam stores games in /home18:22
Kwaadpepperjubo2: this is wise though18:23

Kwaadpepperwhat is "wall messages" ?18:24
Doylewall - write a message to all users18:27
DoylePlease enter password with the systemd-tty-ask-password-agent tool!18:27
DoyleIt's a systemd thing that's doing it18:27
Kwaadpepperi just tried wall 'hello world'18:28
Kwaadpepperit does not ask me for root permission18:28

Guest67971If I want to update Kubuntu by reinstalling the OS without formatting my disk (so I can keep my /home data), will the installation process take care of updating/replacing the KDE settings folders such as .kde?18:36
Kwaadpepperno18:38
Kwaadpepperwhat you have to do is eihter18:38
Kwaadpepperhave another partion for your /home, which will be more practicall for any futur reinstallation18:38
Kwaadpepperor copy your /home/user18:39
Kwaadpepperthen take all items needed in it and put them in your new /home/user older18:39
Kwaadpepperthis allows you to throw away unneeded old config files18:39
Guest67971OK, thanks!18:40
Kwaadpepperexample: you won't copy .steam form your old user profile folder if you don't use steam anymore18:40
BluesKajGuest67971, in other words create a root partition aka / and /home partition18:40
Kwaadpepperi recommand you have a bigger partition for your home folder18:40
Kwaadpepperit grows fast18:40
Guest67971Makes sense.18:41

unascribedIs it "safe" to update to Wily? It seemed kind of unstable, so I'm still on Vivid; I'm using the Kubuntu CI Weekly and Oibaf Graphics PPAs, if it's relevant for upgrade safety18:41
Kwaadpepperunascribed: i'm using wily, it is more stable18:42
Kwaadpepperi'm also using graphic driver ppa with last nvidia and bumblebee, all clear :p18:42
unascribedgeez, I guess if Bumblebee works anything should :P18:43
Kwaadpepperbeware of intel driver18:43
Kwaadpepperbecause 4.2 has bugs18:43
Kwaadpepperi use 4.3 kernel18:43
unascribedmy CPU doesn't have a graphics chip in it to begin with, so I shouldn't have to worry18:43
unascribedthanks for the warning though18:43
BluesKajunascribed, I have 15.10 Wily on my intel graphics and cpu based laptop running fine , nice and stable here18:44
Kwaadpepperforgot to mention if anyone reading, bumblebee has to be sued with nvidia-prime18:44
unascribedwhat's with the Kubuntu CI PPAs? Weekly only supports Xenial18:45
BluesKajguess all the developed apps are in the backports18:47
jubo2so..18:59
jubo2sudo cp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/* /home -R18:59
jubo2will copy recursively all filename.ext and filenamewitoutextension19:00
jubo2and then19:01
jubo2sudo cp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/.* /home -R19:01
jubo2will copy recursively all .dotfiles and .dotdirectories from all directories19:01
jubo2and could be written as19:01
jubo2sudo cp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere/{*,.*} /home -R19:01
jubo2in one line19:01
jubo2I'd hate to be giving wrong information on my http://juboblo.gr blog19:02
jubo2so if someone can confirm that this would seem to copy all /home/username directories and all contents, visible and hidden files19:03
unascribedthe .* glob would probably copy the . and .. virtual directories and cause horrible things to happen19:04
jubo2probably..19:07
lordievaderjubo2: Why not 'cp /media/username/UUIDgoeshere /home -R' ?19:09
jubo2yeah..19:10
jubo2The actual move I did was to use /home/username not /home-partition itself19:10
jubo2so I am not seeing it clearly19:10
jubo2lordievader: is -r and -R different thing?19:11
lordievaderjubo2: "-R, -r, --recursive", no.19:11
est31what has happened with right click -> unzip here21:11
est31and with right click -> compress these files21:11
est31doing this on CLI is PITA21:11
Kwaadpepperon dolphin there is a patch to fix that somewhere21:12
Kwaadpepperi don't have the link anymore21:12
est31so it will be fixed in next kubuntu release?21:12
Kwaadpepperhaha, this is not related to kubuntu, it is related to dolphin and god knows if this will be fixed someday. I hope i'm wrong however21:13
bpromptest31:    what are you trying to do anyway?21:13
Kwaadpepperhttps://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=20148521:15
est31bprompt, I can google, I know how to zip stuff. Just the unzipping / untarring un bzing etc process is the tedious one because there you have tons of file formats and every single file format has its own little command tool, with its own manpage and huge list of options I all dont need21:15
Kwaadpepperln -s /usr/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/ark_*.desktop ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/21:15
Kwaadpepperthis is the fix i used21:15
Kwaadpepperso it's not exactly related to dolphin after all o_o21:16
bprompthmm21:16
Kwaadpeppergive it a try it works for me on 15.1021:16
bpromptest31:    so... hmmm what's the issue again?21:16
Kwaadpepper"right click -> compress" on dolphin i believe21:17
Kwaadpepper*missing21:17
est31yea easily accessable gui tools not available21:17
est31one has to click through ark21:17
bprompthmm21:18
Kwaadpepperest31: have you tried the command i gived ?21:18
Kwaadpepper*i gave21:18
est31~/.kde4 ?21:19
est31isnt it 5?21:19
bprompthmmm21:19
est31I only have ~/.kde21:19
est31lemme try it21:19
Kwaadpepperyes, you got it right21:19
bpromptest31:    I use Krusader file manager, is a dual-pane file manager, it has a pack/unpack option that you can use, and has a dropdown for rar/zip/tar/bzip and many others, and uses dependencies like unrar and unzip and others, that if you just want to see the file, and no open it, you can just click it, and it will open it like a folder, from there, you can copy/move to the other pane or tab and such21:21
bpromptest31:    but in the end... that doesn't address the original issue I'd think, which you never really mentioned anyhow21:21
KwaadpepperIs krusader a total commander clone or sort of ?21:23
est31bprompt, the issue is that the GUI elements from dolphin got removed since my upgrade to 15.10.21:23
bpromptest31:  hmmm   dunno what that means :/21:23
est31not all of them, but those regarding unzipping files and zippiung files21:23
Kwaadpepperest31: so you did ln -s /usr/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/ark_*.desktop ~/.kde/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ ?21:24
Kwaadpepperjust restarting dolphin should work21:24
est31yes ~/.kde/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/21:25
est31lemme see21:25
bpromptKwaadpepper:   dunno, there are many dual-pane file managers, I know total commander is an oldie, but krusader is old just as well, I've used it back in kde 3.x,  not sure if clone of it, anymore than a clone of gentoo file manager21:25
Kwaadpepperbprompt: dolphin can have double pannel too though21:25
bpromptKwaadpepper:    difference being, krusader is very customizable, with user actions, you can add your actions to the toolbar,21:26
Kwaadpepperindeed21:26
bpromptKwaadpepper:    yes, I do use dolphin, krusader is far more flexible, you can also have many tabs per pane, like for example, I most of the time have about 9 tabs in each pane, the left and right pane, you can move the tabs around, even across panes21:27
Kwaadpepperest31: all you have to do is type the comand i gave you in a terminal this would od the job21:27
est31Kwaadpepper, I've done it, no changes21:27
Kwaadpepperest31: try restarting dolphin or your computer maybe. I'm sure this is the solution, i've done it myself and few people here too21:28
est31did killall dolphin already21:28
