Bashing-omlotuspsychje: Now that is a driver being a pig talking to the kernel !03:02
lotuspsychjeBashing-om: yeah i wonder what future devs hold for us...systemd, mir,wayland,unity8...will this all resist the real field?03:02

lotuspsychjecheck this project out guys10:21
lotuspsychjenot so far away from my idea of linux gaming on sort of virtual deamon-tools like app running on any Os right?10:21
daftykinsyou know, every one of those companies that started up and tried to do streaming gaming from data centres to your home, failed.10:24
daftykinsif it's just around the house, then that would be ok - for example i play my xbox one from up here on my desktop PC sometimes, over glorious gigabit wired LAN10:24
daftykinseven then you can't use that for anything competitive - just single player stuff really10:25
lotuspsychjesomething amazing will happen soon i can feel it :p10:26
* daftykins spots mrs.lotus making lunch10:27
daftykinsyou're right :)10:27

daftykins\o13:06
BluesKajHi OerHeks, found a workaround for my 90 sec boot delay .  It seems systemd was search for my swap partition but had some bug where there was a 90 sec delay mounting it , so I remobed it from fstan and voila!, no more delay13:09
BluesKajfstab even13:10
OerHeksEhh? was that swap missing or changed?13:10
BluesKajI had the swap rntry set in fstab...removing the fstab entry solved my problem, just had to turn swapom in gparted and it's back on.13:12
BluesKajentry13:12
daftykinsah har13:12
daftykinsweird it wasn't on13:12

lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: you mean quiet splash off?14:20
BluesKajnot that it matters so much , just a curious action14:20
lotuspsychjeive edited permament quiet splash disabled for textboot, as i like it14:20
BluesKajI don't recall editing the quiet splash line , but I'll check14:21
lotuspsychjesee if its ""14:21
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: we had some users having xenial issues in virtualbox aswell14:22

daftykinsTJ-: welcome back o/16:17
daftykinshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/u47k6di56j0n2hv/IMG_20151209_154957.jpg?dl=016:17
daftykinshrmm just took apart this ageing optical drive from in my server16:17
daftykinsi think it's dead, Jim16:17
* TJ- waves16:17
TJ-I'm trying to replace a rare blown MOSFET on a mobo, and I'm terrible at working out what counts as an equivalent part.16:18
daftykinsah har16:18
daftykinsi managed to identify one on a laptop that blew a bit ago :>16:19
TJ-I have the original datasheet but this side of analogue electronics is fuzzy to me, not sure which parameters I can afford to vary and still be in the correct range.16:21
daftykinsi think there might be a capable person in #ubuntu-uk16:22
TJ-I've asked in ##electronics but basically got told 'match the parametrics' which is the bit I'm crap at :D16:24
TJ-So, I'm trawling Farnell some more to figure it out - about time I learned this stuff I guess16:24
daftykinsi wasn't sure if it was yourself or someone else that told me they're not particularly friendly ;)16:24
TJ-not me that I recall16:25
daftykinsoof this drive is painfully slow and is emitting sounds that seem like ticking16:25
TJ-Generally I'd found it a pretty useful channel for 2nd opinions16:25
daftykinsi think it's just ready for the rubbish heap16:25
TJ-sounds like the focus mechanism is having problems16:25
daftykinsit's been reporting errors when ripping audio CDs, which aren't there in another drive16:26
TJ-usually you can see the head being moved up/down toward/away from the optical surface as it tries to find focus. The other issue could be it can't find 'track-0' position and the servo is retrying16:26
daftykinsso that'd make sense16:26
daftykinsi think you're right first time as it's still progressing, just very slowly16:26
daftykins5 mins to go over a single audio track16:27
daftykinsalbeit 10 mins long16:27
TJ-I've found that once drives start to go off, it shows up as an inability to read discs written from that device on any other, like only that device can do the same focus16:27
TJ-sometimes its as simple as wiping the lens with a cotton bud dipped in IPA16:28
daftykinsah i foolishly didn't go that far, but i did blow on it :D16:28
BluesKajlike the old cd players that attracted dust on the lens16:28
TJ-that is a good substitute - but it won't shift the effects of humidty/condensation+dust that sticks16:28
TJ-I still keep an 'old fashioned' head cleaner that has little brushes fitted to the optical surface for cleaning the heads16:29
daftykinshehe :D16:29
daftykinswouldn't hurt to take it apart again and have another go, it seems a lot worse now16:30
TJ-You broked it :D16:30
daftykinsXD16:30
TJ-It needs either TLC, or a hammer threat16:30
daftykinsit was already pretty bad16:30
daftykinsactually it's not reading errors anymore16:30
daftykinsor that might've been a later track, i'll have to wait a bit and see16:31
BluesKajwonder how dust gets into a hdd that is so sealed16:31
TJ-I needed an external DVD drive recently but I'd taken all my 'unwanted' parts to the scrap yard last year; I always regret doing a clear-out later16:31
daftykinsHDDs aren't sealed though :)16:31
TJ-They have a breather hole if they're air-filled. Not so for argon/helium drives of course16:32
OerHeksmetal-dust?16:32
daftykinsi'd be a bit nervous about buying one of those helium drives16:32
TJ-Why? it'll only make you sound like dafty duck  instead :)16:32
daftykinsi don't know, the technology just sounds like such a stretch16:33
TJ-What were those IBM drives, new tech around 2001, that ended up literally losing the entire surface coating so the platters ended up transparent? That was terrible data loss16:33
BluesKajdaftykins, look quite sealed up to me16:34
daftykinsthey usually have breather holes in them16:34
TJ-the reason for a gas other than air is less resistance to the heads so they float closer and more stable16:34
daftykinsIBM Deskstar aka Deathstar :)16:34
TJ-No, don't think it was those, although they did die badly. Maybe I'm confused but I think they were 'special' enterprise drives16:36
daftykinscome to think of it the Deskstars were more the dreaded click of death16:37
TJ-yes, it was the Deskstar too - Glass platters16:37
TJ-I have a few of those around the place; love mounting them on the wall with their tops off as clocks :)16:38
TJ-Yes, you're correct, it was those GXP drives16:40
TJ-"The drives were known for an unusually high rate of head crashes, due to the magnetic coating soon beginning to loosen and sprinkle off from the platters, creating dust in the hard disk array and leading to crashes over large areas of the platters."16:40
TJ-oh, the 1 equivalent MOSFET I find on Farnell... "No Longer Manufactured"16:47
daftykinsdoh!16:51
TJ-but amazingly, search including description on eBay, find an Italian supplier of 1 that says "substiute for AP3310H" ... and Farnell has thousands of them. Score!16:52
daftykinswow, our local UPS rep snuck in a delivery missed note at 1:40pm, i heard nothing17:23
TJ-hahaha, silent but deadly, brought to you by UPS!17:24
daftykinsnothing worse than a hit and run courier!17:25
daftykinsi picked up a cheap TP-Link router for a friend who shares a single 20/1 megabit ADSL2 connection in a rented property over here17:26
daftykinsthe current router gives 60% packet loss to google UK :S17:26
TJ-is that due to a bad SnR on the line?18:05
daftykinsdoubt it, the Thomson TG585 is seriously terrible :)18:06
daftykinsunfortunately i had to go blind as the router was passworded by the landlord18:10
daftykinsbut being cabled in and trying a few things it was obvious it was a very, very sick device18:11
TJ-sometimes having a different chipset maker in the CPE to the DSLAM can cause such issues18:11
daftykinswell that model was the ISP supplied one18:12
daftykinsit'd be quite the monumental fail if it were :)18:12
TJ-does the ISP control the last-mile? the DSLAM is owned by the CO/Exchange operator?18:13
TJ-It can make a 4-6db difference in some situations18:13
daftykinswhole island is one main telco + ISP yep18:13
TJ-Historically, Alcatel Thomson was the best equipment, we used to swear by Speedtouch devices18:14
daftykinsthey've taken a really big dive :(18:15
daftykinsthe ones my ISP puts out are all by their latest name, Technicolor... all particularly poor18:16
TJ-going for lowest cost probably?18:23
daftykinsno doubt, yeah - they got bought out by a Bahrain company a while back18:24
=== kook is now known as ffio
lotuspsychjegood evening to all21:12

lotuspsychjeBashing-om: weird layout from faluce, 2 intel cards??21:48
Bashing-omlotuspsychje: Maybe, could be a dual head on the card ? - Think I have seen one other similar (?) .21:53

JanCI'd suggest be careful with the VAAPI driver; I have pretty bad experiences with that...22:36
lotuspsychjeJanC: ok tnx22:36
JanCespecially on GStreamer-based apps (not sure if other apps have the same issues)22:37
lotuspsychjeJanC: but we just had a users with weird intel dual card22:37
JanCbut with GStreamer apps enabling he gstreamer vaapi driver has always resulted in not being able to seek inside videos anymore22:38
JanCI haven't really investigated deeply though22:39

lotuspsychjeok nite nite guys23:11
brodudeHey guys! Should I install ubuntu on my macbook pro? Is that a smart thing to do? :D23:12
JanCI think nm-tool was a 3rd party tool before nmcli existed?23:14
JanChttp://askubuntu.com/questions/617067/why-nm-tool-is-no-longer-available-in-ubuntu-15-0423:15
JanCso maybe not 3rd-party23:15
JanCand there also is nmtui?23:15
Bashing-omOpcode90: Thing is that #ubuntu is THE support channel, and it is some kind of busy . Anything off-topic there is a major detraction from us keeping up with support . Why there exist several other discussion channels .23:15
Opcode90I got that right away, same way in vmware23:16
Opcode90which brought me first to irc23:16
Opcode90so i came here23:16
Opcode90got out of the way23:16
Opcode90not sure how loose or tight it is here even23:17
Opcode90all of freenode to me is a blessing, no messing around straight to the point23:17
Opcode90See it would be off topic probably for me to say23:18
Opcode90im using vmware right now, on my other box, installed my licensed 8.1 windows and activated the guest client under it and upgrading it to Windows 10 just so i can write down my permanent prodcut code.23:19
Opcode90as it has to do with vmware and windows and nothing to do with ubuntu23:20
Opcode90truth is, i want to learn it all23:21
Opcode90i spent couple weeks on ubuntu server AWS Amazon free for one year23:21
Opcode90until one evenining i couldnt access my VPC, i though well all night i couldnt so next day it pops up just fine23:22
Opcode90so i deleted the default VPC23:22
Opcode90sayin ill undo everything i did and start over23:22
Opcode90turns out23:22
Opcode90on Amazon Ubuntu AWS VPC , only tech support can recreate the default VPC23:23
Opcode90You can create your own VPC but without Amazons default VPC it will fail in certain regions23:24
Opcode90there is no TECH SUPPORT not even email to Amazon AWS23:24
Opcode90without paying 49.99 or so a month23:24
Opcode90so i said to myself, let me cancel the service23:25
Opcode90I found a much more friendly service on Digital Ocean.23:25
Opcode90I installed Ubuntu server, installed ZNC and psyBnc to compare23:26
Opcode90being new to all of this23:26
Opcode90but then realized23:26
Opcode90neither hide your host unless you have a VHOST23:26
Opcode90so after learning alot of command line commands as they recommend no GUI for Ubuntu servers because they are security risks23:27
Opcode90I went with Kirenet.com but be sure not to use the web one get yourself a shell.23:28
Opcode90The Web one sounds like it supports Vhost but does not.23:28
JanCso how much do you pay for your VPS now?  :)23:28
Opcode90I cancelled AWS AMazon and Cancelled Digital Ocean and I pay 5.50 a month on Kirenet.com for shell and VHost23:29
Opcode90I must say though I really liked Digital Ocean for simplicity23:31
JanCyou can get a VPS + reverse DNS (which I guess is what you mean by "vhost") for 4.64 euro at my hoster  ;)23:31
Opcode90and although for maybe big companies AWS Amazon may have more options it makes its money off tech support contracts23:32
Opcode90yes i understand somewhat unclearly but that Vhost is a reverse DNS23:33
Opcode90maybe I pay to much but i have to be done with the thing23:33
Opcode90i have other goals23:33
JanCyou need your own domain name for a non-default reverse DNS though23:33
Opcode90ya so that means buying a domain name then paying for ever dns right?23:34
Opcode90reverse dns right?23:34
JanCand the easiest way to hide your IP address is just to register your account with Freenode and ask for a cloak  ;)23:34
Opcode90thats a tighnite group23:35
Opcode90that means hoops23:35
Opcode90ive read about that23:35
Opcode90and cloak is not unbreakable they all tell me23:35
Opcode90even if you get past my anything, vhost, all you'll find is kirenet.com23:36
JanCreverse DNS is easier to get your IP address than a cloak23:36
JanCor at least as easy23:36
Opcode90well that reverse DNS doesnt belong to me23:36
Opcode90so all they will get is kirenet.com's23:37
Opcode90i bounce off a server23:37
Opcode90to get here23:37
Opcode90then use a vhost just to hide other info23:37
Opcode90it all leads back to kirenet.com23:37
JanCthat would be the same with any VPS23:37
Opcode90not me23:37
Opcode90look im not looking to rob a bank23:38
Opcode90in fact im a coder, and refuse to write code to hurt anyone23:38
Opcode90no mischief23:38
JanCpretty much all code can potentially hurt someone23:39
Opcode90well you must tust someone, theres and Operating System you are on to get here, either a webbroweser or irc client....23:40
Opcode90I noticed you didn't mention Tor23:41
Opcode90I refuse to use TOR. no offense to anyonbe but its required you spend 3 days on their Server before being added to a list so that you can use socks to be anon here.23:42
Opcode90All I saw was everything I never want to be again, it was all hacking channels23:43
Opcode90I dont want to use them or them use me.23:43
Opcode90Back to Ubuntu Server23:44
Opcode90that was alot of fun23:44
Opcode90having what they call root access23:45
Opcode90to see the structure of it all from the inside out from commandline view23:45
Opcode90When Windows 10 is done installing in Vmware Workstation Pro 12 that i paid 250 dollars for23:46
Opcode90I am definatly going to put and ubuntu server on here23:46
Opcode90Actually Debian was next on the list23:47
Opcode90but i spent all my time with Ubuntu Server23:47
Opcode90seem well enough to me23:47
Opcode90I've got a 3 dvd Set of Debian but its only i38623:49
Opcode90and an update dvd paked full dvd size 4.7 gigs23:49
Opcode90and a part 2 of that updat thats only 1.2 gigs23:50
Opcode90It is tough having to go get apt23:51
Opcode90a million times23:51
Opcode90does anyone make a good ubuntu server loaded with utils i wonder23:51
Opcode90ill google later23:53
