plebianhello00:48
pjotterhi everybody01:26
craigbass76pjotter, howdy01:55
pjotterHi craigbass7601:57
craigbass76Something broke, or were you just saying hello to everyone?01:57
pjotterNo everything fine01:57
craigbass76Cool01:58
pjotterI'm working on the graphic for the slideshow for 16.0401:58
craigbass76When's 16.04 due out?  Is that LTS?01:58
pjotterApril 2016. And yes that's a LTS01:59
craigbass76I keep being on the fence about whether I like xubuntu or mint better...  This is the second or third time I've have xub 14 on my laptop02:01
craigbass76Giving ubuntu studio a drive this time02:01
pjotterI've not really tried mint. I take it you use the xfce version of mint?02:02
craigbass76No, it's got a cinnamon desktop that's a lot like xfce/gnome202:02
craigbass76but I think it's essestially  hacked up gnome302:03
pjotterAh, ok. I think there's also an Xfce version02:03
craigbass76So what's this slideshow graphic you're talking about?  Something that plays during install?02:04
pjotterYes, that thing. It still needs a picture of the little critter they're going to use for this version02:04
pjotter"Xenial Xerus". It's an african ground squirrel02:05
craigbass76What happens after Z, they just starting over again?02:18
pjotterZ will be the ultimate version.02:19
pjotterI have no idea :)02:19
dylanHelp02:27
dylanMy xubuntu wont boot02:27
pjotterDoes it show any message?02:28
dylanIts a blackscreen02:32
dylanNvidia thing how do i fix02:32
dylanLike im had trouble with this its annoying me so if you can somehow he02:33
dylanP02:33
pjotterIs it a laptop?02:34
dylanIts a macbook pro02:34
dylan2010 7,102:34
pjotterUnfortunately, I don't really know what to do. But I have had the same thing with an Eee PC. It randomly boots to black screen and the whole thing just hangs. What I do then is: remove the battery and let it run on power supply and then reboot. It will then reboot fine and I can put the battery back in.02:36
dylanBro02:37
dylanIts a omg nvidia driver issue02:37
dylanSheesh no one can help why did i uninstall mac os x and run a peice of os that no one helps with02:37
craigbass76dylan, Does it bot form the livecd?03:06
craigbass76boot from... :P03:06
craigbass76I'm asking because I think there's a file you can just copy over from the livecd's /etc do your installed copy03:07
craigbass76But someone else will have to chime in.  It might not even be xubuntu specific, so if nobody in here can help someone in #ubuntu might be able to.03:07
dylanBro listen03:11
dylanJust please dont bother03:12
dylanIm really stressed out03:12
pjotterHave you tried booting in recovery mode?03:29
dylanpjotter:03:42
misterxhi there05:05
roboticshi05:07
misterxi'm running xubuntu trusty (LTS) and recently switched from leafpad to mousepad as my default plaintext-editor. anytime i open a file that is not encoded in unicode but ISO (happens…), i have to manually switch to the correct encoding. is there any possibility to have that automated (like in eg leafpad b/c it never asked me…)05:08
craigbass76misterx, what's Geany do?  I have to use Windows at work, so I got used to that editor, being cross platform.05:39
misterxcraigbass76: currently seeing if gedit works for me; geany is a bit "overloaded" for my tastes… ;)05:40
misterxi was more searching for the correct checkbox/dialogue/preferences-file than for alternatives, though ;-)05:41
misterx(but thanks anyway)05:41

QVIKti455What's the downside to using Xubuntu instead of Unity?08:35
=== mrkramps_ is now known as mrkramps
dixie7z_QVIKti455, Unity is DE of Ubuntu... Xfce is DE of Xubuntu.. Xfce is more lightweight so it makes it faster... Also you can change the look to suit your needs... Menu... Panels... Launchers... I don't know about any downside :)10:17
QVIKti455Is it maybe less easy for a beginner?10:18
QVIKti455Missing some GUI parts?10:18
mrkrampsactually Xfce makes use of a more classical concept of desktop compared to unity10:19
mrkrampsmight make it even easier vor beginners10:19
dixie7z_true10:19
mrkrampsand I do not know of GUI parts missing10:21
Terry4QVIKti455: Unity is copied from OSX, so it is easier for Apple users.10:22
QVIKti455https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LhQ46SaRmI <-- there's a comment here that says Mint 17.2 XFCE is full of bugs.10:22
Terry4QVIKti455: XFCE is easier for Windows users10:23
mrkrampsQVIKti455, mint != ubuntu10:23
QVIKti455Mint is XFCE is based on Xubuntu LTS.10:23
mrkrampsQVIKti455, _based_10:24
mrkrampsand that's all10:24
QVIKti455Do you recommend Xubuntu 14.04?10:24
mrkrampsyes10:25
dixie7z_yes... just try it... installation will take 10-15minutes... but don't stop on... uf, i don't like it very much and quit... because you can change pretty much everything10:26
Terry4i dont think there is a big difference from Xubuntu & Mint XFCE.   Mint just adds some more features10:26
QVIKti455Right, Mint XFCE should be at least as good as Xubuntu LTS.10:26
Terry4Mint makes it easier to upgrade kernel, adds color to Terminal, easier to add/see PPA's, etc10:28
QVIKti455You notice a meaningful difference in snappiness using Xubuntu over Kubuntu?10:29
Terry4Mint makes "apt" easier also:   http://www.howtogeek.com/234583/simplify-command-line-package-management-with-apt-instead-of-apt-get/10:29
Terry4QVIKti455: yes, kDE is much slower than XFCE.  LXDE is even faster than XFCE.10:30
QVIKti455Another user complaining about Mint stability: " I used 17.2 and 2 weeks later I switched back due to big amount of crashes and freezes."10:31
Terry4QVIKti455: link?  which DE were they using?10:31
QVIKti455https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrPSDRjQzWk10:31
QVIKti455Cinnamon I presume. But the user before this one was using XFCE.10:32
QVIKti455I'll find https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LhQ46SaRmI10:32
Terry4QVIKti455: Cinnamon is slower and more complicated than XFCE10:32
QVIKti455Here's the user complaining about XFCE 17.2.10:32
QVIKti455"It is full of bugs. shut down reboot takes forever. When its start the battery icon is missing from the bar (ramdomly) and Icons looks different. I3 gt9200m prop drivers installed. it is not stable for me. I HATE IT ! reinsatall it twice from 2 different dvd's with checksum verified."10:33
Terry4QVIKti455: that is a known issue in Xubuntu as well, power-manager.:   http://xubuntu.org/news/14-10-release/10:36
Terry4Note: Upgraders from Trusty will not see the new xfce4-power-manager panel plugin by default, but instead stick to indicator-power. This can easily be resolved by uninstalling indicator-power and adding the “Power Manager Plugin” to the panel.10:36
Terry4easily fixed10:36
QVIKti4553 months ago posted: "wow not just me. I have an i5, gtx 660, and 8 gigs of ram yet cinnamon lags and crashes and is pretty terrible..."10:42
QVIKti455"I would be using Cinnamon instead of MATE on this computer if it could handle it, but it's old and locked up A LOT"10:43
flocculantQVIKti455: there are bugs in all of them, if you're going to wander around the internet watching videos looking for something perfect - you won't10:43
QVIKti455I won't what?10:44
flocculantQVIKti455: what you need to do is download and check out if YOU are affected by the same things10:44
flocculantyou won't find something perfect10:44
QVIKti455I am a Windows user wanting to migrate to Linux. But Windows has been rock-solid for me. I'd like to see the Linux teams band together on something as "just works" as Windows is.10:45
Terry4QVIKti455: XFCE is better than cinnamon.  i'm not sure about MATE, but it looks fine10:45
Terry4QVIKti455: have u tried Xubuntu, Linux Mint XFCE?10:46
QVIKti455Terry4: What makes you say it's better? Lighter and more stable?10:46
flocculantQVIKti455:  really - just try it10:46
flocculantQVIKti455: and if YOU get issues then ask for support for those things10:47
Terry4QVIKti455: Cinnamon, unity, GNOME--- they all add "eye candy"  shadows/transparency/ transitions/animations/compiz  etc.    which i dont like cuz it slows computer down, and it adds complexity10:47
Terry4QVIKti455: XFCE, MATE, LXDE   are more streamlined.  so they are faster, and *usually* more stable (but nothing is perfect)10:48
QVIKti455The MATE seems better supported than XFCE on the Linux Mint side. They're at 17.3 MATE, 17.2 XFCE. And the XFCE isn't shown on the main DL page.10:49
Terry4and if u like "eyecandy" u can also add it to XFCE, MATE, LXDE.   but they dont "force" it on u10:49
QVIKti455I don't care about eye candy.10:49
QVIKti455I just need to get my work done.10:50
QVIKti455I'll try Xubuntu and Linux Mint 17.3 MATE.10:50
Terry4QVIKti455: i like XFCE the best, it has been around a long time, and was the default in Debain until recently.  it still is default in many "no nonsense" distros10:50
QVIKti455Xubuntu LTS is what you recommend, yes?10:50
Terry4LTS yes10:51
QVIKti455You're using the LTS yourself?10:51
Terry4try Linux Mint XFCE also. yes i use LTS, more programs are made for it10:51
=== Ofloo_ is now known as Ofloo
flocculantI wouldn't - I would install 15.10, then upgrade to 16.04 when that is out - then set which version to upgrade to as LTS10:52
Terry4MATE does not have "adjustable aero-snap" where u can snap the window the left with ur mouse, to fill 50% of the screen and then readjust to 30-80%10:52
Terry4windows invented that in "Aero"10:53
Terry4XFCE does have aero-snap10:53
Reduser667Back. I forgot what name I was using.10:55
Reduser667Why doesn't Linux Mint show XFCE on its main DL page? Why are they trying to push it back out of the way?10:55
Reduser667flocculant, Why would you go with 15.10 instead of LTS?10:56
flocculantwhy install something 2 years old instead of something that is going to upgrade to the next LTS is out in 4 months10:58
Reduser667Everyone just always suggesteed that LTS is the one to use. The others are buggy and prone to crashing.10:59
Reduser667In 4 months the 15.10 will easily upgrade itself to the LTS?11:00
flocculantdo as you wish - in the time it's taken to discuss this I could have downloaded the image and tried it11:00
Reduser667What do you say to that Terry?11:00
Reduser667I can try a distro for 10 minutes11:00
Reduser667but I can't know how it really behaves over a 2 month period11:01
Reduser667That's why I have to read and see what other users are experiencing.11:01
flocculantyep - anyway I'm off11:01
Reduser667This is going on my productivity workstation11:01
Reduser667I need a workhorse.11:01
flocculantthe S in LTS is for support NOT stable11:02
Reduser667https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxmpUKhIZRE <-- Ubuntu Mate 15.10. It looks good.11:03
Reduser667"I dumped Linux mint mate for Ubuntu mate and love it"11:06
Reduser667But this man says this: "...I am running now Ubuntu Unity 15.10 (rocksolid) on my main machine and Manjaro on my laptop."11:08
Reduser667He doesn't like Ubuntu Mate.11:08
Terry4Reduser667: press TAB to autocomplete usernames in IRC.  u can also do tab-complete in Terminal11:11
Reduser667What do you think of Manjaro XFCE?11:11
Terry4Reduser667:  i use LTS, because more software is written for it, that is why.11:11
Reduser667You mean some software won't run if you don't use LTS?11:12
Reduser667https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvF5dzNz4GY11:14
Reduser667This man loves it. Says it's "done to perfection."11:14
Reduser667- Terry4 -11:14
Terry4Reduser667: Manjaro is Arch.  Arch breaks more, it is cutting edge like Debian Unstable.11:15
Terry4Reduser667:  for PPA's most are made for LTS11:16
Terry4so-- ironically, if u want up-to-date software, LTS + PPA is the easiest way11:17
Reduser667So they won't run on 15.10?11:17
Terry4Reduser667: some do, u have to check. do u use PPAs?11:17
Reduser667No, I am a beginner.11:17
Reduser667I suppose Ubuntu is the community's attempt to aggressively back ONE thing.11:19
Terry4well, first choose if u want Linux mint or ubuntu. Reduser66711:19
Reduser667Am I missing anything in Ubuntu that is in Mint?11:20
Terry4linux mint is ONLY LTS, so no choice there :)11:20
Terry4Reduser667: there are a lot of little nice things in mint:  colorized terminal, right-clicking actions in Nemo, thunar, easy to update kernel11:21
Reduser667I presume the Ubuntu kernel updates when you upgrade to a new LTS?11:23
bekksYes.11:23
Terry4Reduser667:  ubuntu updates kernel too. but in mint u can easily update to newer one if u want.11:23
Terry4Reduser667:  do u use aero-snap? that would help narrow ur choices11:24
Reduser667I don't.11:24
bekksThe same applies for Ubuntu. You can easily upgrade to newer kernels.11:24
Terry4bekks: not as easily though11:25
Reduser667Basically I adapt to any interface. I am not partial to any particular interface. But I like ease of use, being light on resources, and being very stable.11:25
bekksTerry4: Same as easily. Been there, done that.11:25
Terry4Reduser667:   try Linux Mint XFCE , it will updated to 17.3 very soon anyway   http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=19411:27
Terry4bekks: how?11:27
bekksTerry4: apt install ...11:27
bekksTerry4: Please dont advertise Mint in here, This is Ubuntu support.11:27
Terry4bekks:  clicking on a GUI is simpler than , apt install ...11:28
bekksWow. There are guis for the package manager in Ubuntu too.11:29
bekksDid you even know that?11:29
knomedid anyone have an unanswered support question here?11:29
Reduser667You mean Mint has no more GUI parts than Ubuntu has?11:30
Terry4Reduser667: MATE and XFCE are similar, try them both.   i just personally like XFCE cuz of aero-snap11:30
knomemint might have some GUI applications that aren't in the ubuntu repositories, but since mint is based heavily on ubuntu, it isn't really that different11:31
bekksMATE isnt similar to XFCE. It is similar to the dead-end Gnome211:31
Terry4Reduser667: eventually Ubunu will have a GUI to upgrade the kernel, but for now , it doesnt11:31
bekksIT does.11:31
Reduser667MATE has an excellent development team: http://mate-desktop.org/team/ <-- for your part, bekks, why do you prefer Xubuntu over Ubuntu MATE?11:32
knomeTerry4, you can upgrade the kernel with any package manager11:32
Terry4bekks: i mean with one click11:32
bekksIt is calles update-manager, synaptic, etc. etc. etc.11:32
bekksTerry4: If you dont know about what Ubuntu provides, please dont tell people it doesnt. :P11:32
knomeif nobody has a support question and only want to talk about different DE's, please move to #xubuntu-offtopic, which is the channel for that kind of discussion11:33
Reduser667I went over to #xubuntu-offtopic11:33
Terry4bekks: please tell me where u can one-click install new kernel in ubuntu, like this:   http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2014/07/update-manager-more-kernel-info/11:35
Terry4Linux Mint, just makes it easier11:35
knomeTerry4, please.11:35
knomeTerry4, i've told you to move to another channel, so you've been noticed11:35
roninnmoi11:36
roninndo you know if it's possible to control volume from the cmd line11:36
Terry4that is the beauty of FOSS, project can improve on eachother, there is no hate here , i am trying to help11:37
bekksTerry4: You are not helping, you are just advertising Mint. So please move it to the channel you've been told.11:38
bekksroninn: Yes you can. Using amixer e.g.11:38
roninnthanks11:41
dixie7z_roninn, alsamixer12:06
roninnthen I only need a remote software for clementine and ssh connection from phone to my desktop12:22
roninnbut since linux supports ssh as default (unlike windows) i only need something to remote control clementine12:22
roninnif there's nothing out, I guess I need to study more programming12:22
roninnoh there is an app for android12:23
scrabcakesMy soundcard doesn't seem to be loading, only HDMI is loaded. Any ideas?17:13
puffEvery now and then emacs opens its xwindow a little too tall, so the message buffer is below the bottom edge of the screen.  Usually when it does this I can just use F10 to maximize it and it adjusts the height to match the screen, but sometimes, as today, it does not.  And it doesn't seem to want to let me adjust the vertical size.  It will let me drag the window size horizontally, but apparently not vertically.17:58
