xubuntu65dhi to the room! i will assistance with a problem im facing06:36
slidinghornxubuntu65d: go ahead and ask your question with as much detail (commands tried, error messages - in a pastebin if more than one line, etc.) as possible, and do try to keep it to one post :)06:37
slidinghornif someone knows how to help, they'll respond :)06:37
xubuntu65dwhen im trying to update the softwar sudo apt-get upgrade" command and all i get are "HIt" and "Ign" while the repos are loading06:41
xubuntu65dis there  a way to reset my repos list?06:42
xubuntu65di tried changing the server through software sources but it was the same thing06:43
slidinghornxubuntu65d: do you mean sudo apt-get update  ?06:45
xubuntu65dyes06:45
xubuntu65dhttp://pastebin.com/7AD1wac806:50
xubuntu65dany ideas?06:50
slidinghornxubuntu65d: That is normal behavior....basically what it's saying -  "Hit"  means the timestamps on the package list say there aren't any changes from last time.  "Ign" means there were no changes in the pdiff index, and the list will be ignored this time.  "Get" means it's receiving an updated index, and you'll likely have some package(s) to upgrade06:50
xubuntu65dso everything seems ok?06:51
xubuntu65dim relatively new to all this.. this is why im asking06:52
slidinghornxubuntu65d: so far...after you've run  sudo apt-get update      you can then run   sudo apt-get dist-upgrade        to upgrade any necessary packages06:52
slidinghornno worries, we're all beginners at some point :)06:53
xubuntu65dthanks!06:54

Anonaly_Hi there, I am using Xubuntu 14.04, I have noticed that there is a menu item which is related to a program that no longer exists.17:59
Anonaly_I have tried using the menu editor   menulibre, to remove it, however menulibre does not show it (so I can't remove it)18:00
Anonaly_its very annoying18:00
retrojeffin a terminal check /home/<youraccount>/.local/share/applications/18:20
retrojefflook see if the program has a .desktop file in this folder18:21
retrojeffyou could also check /home/<youraccount>/.config/menus/applications-merged18:22
retrojeffif its not found here you will need sudo or root access to remove it from the system18:22
retrojeffoh there is a 3rd place to check /home/<youraccount>/.local/share/desktop-directories/18:24
retrojeffI seem to have alot of wine related files in these 3 folders18:25
Anonaly_hi retrojeff18:39
Anonaly_ok I will try that18:42
Anonaly_the first one worked :)18:45
Anonaly_thanks18:45
retrojeffgood to know18:55
Anonaly_i suppose while your here I'll ask another question retrojeff :)18:58
Anonaly_my desktop wallpaper is stuck,18:58
retrojeff??18:58
Anonaly_I try and change the picture but it will not change18:58
Anonaly_yes I know it seems like a newb question,18:58
retrojeffnot sure how to reproduce that18:58
Anonaly_but it is as if the settings file is in read only18:59
retrojeffhold on18:59
Anonaly_I will try again and verify18:59
retrojeffstrace might shed some light on this18:59
Anonaly_yeah, I just replicated it myself18:59
retrojeffits not a bug its something on your end19:00
Anonaly_double clicking on the wallpapers in the desktop settings section does not change the wallpaper19:00
retrojefflike permissions like you said19:00
Anonaly_nor does selecting it and hitting back19:00
Anonaly_yes19:00
retrojeffslow down let me strace and check19:00
Anonaly_makes sense19:00
retrojefftry this for me hold ALT and press F2 to get the application launch19:01
Anonaly_ok19:02
retrojeffput in xfce4-settings-editor19:02
retrojeffpress enter19:02
Anonaly_ok19:02
retrojefflook for xfwm4-desktop19:02
Anonaly_got it19:02
retrojeffyou might see backdrop19:02
retrojeffwith a down facing arrow19:02
Anonaly_ij19:03
Anonaly_opk19:03
retrojeffand screen0 ?19:03
Anonaly_ (ok)19:03
retrojeffwith a whole listing of monitors19:03
Anonaly_ok19:03
retrojeffI guess check monitor019:04
Anonaly_change it here ?19:04
retrojefflook for image-path19:04
retrojeffshould say type "String"19:04
Anonaly_i've got last-image19:05
retrojefftry changing the image-path to the image you want logout and back in19:05
Anonaly_alright I will try this19:05
retrojeffI can screenshot mine to show you19:05
retrojeffhttp://i.imgur.com/tzACqmc.png19:06
retrojeffshould be something like this but with your image and not mine19:06
Anonaly_no I found it thats ok19:07
retrojeffdid it change?19:07
retrojeffor need to logout and login again19:07
Anonaly_I haven't tried yet, I guess I could. but that would mean I have to shut down alot of stuff19:08
retrojeffI know that feeling19:08
Anonaly_I have a VM running :(19:08
retrojeffhaving lots of things open and power goes out19:08
Anonaly_actually I never changed anything there yet19:08
retrojeffyou screem fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu19:08
Anonaly_yea19:09
Anonaly_retrojeff, do you think that if I chagned the setting in xfce4-settings-editor, it would allow me to change the setting in the main desktop settings section ?19:09
retrojeffI have no idea19:10
retrojeffwill just need to try and find out19:10
retrojeffif you change it in the editor and close the editor and open it again19:10
retrojeffand the setting did not stick19:11
retrojeffwe can troubleshoot further19:11
retrojeffif that was the case I think all your settings would be screwed19:11
retrojeffand not just your wallpaper19:11
Anonaly_retrojeff, there has to be a way to reset the desktop wallpaper program19:17
retrojeffthere should be19:17
retrojeffI am not aware of any19:17
retrojeffmaybe just a simple logout and login will fix it19:17
Anonaly_xfdesktop19:17
Anonaly_pkill xfdesktop19:17
retrojeffmaybe your session got screwed19:17
retrojeffyou might loose open windows19:18
Anonaly_oh there we go19:18
Anonaly_xfdesktop was not running19:18
retrojeffoh?19:18
retrojeffand you fixed it yourself19:18
Anonaly_fixed19:18
Anonaly_yerp19:18
retrojeffhave a pat on the back19:18
Anonaly_yep19:18
Anonaly_thanks19:18
Anonaly_pretty simple19:18
retrojeffyes a logout and login would also have fixed that19:19
retrojeffseems odd you did not know it was not running19:19
retrojeffunless it segfaulted and you quickly said not to restart it19:20
Anonaly_yeah19:20
Anonaly_it had my old wallpaper on there, and xfdesktop did not appear to be running,19:20
Anonaly_I think what happened was that Nautilus changed the wallpaper, and nautilus is a gnome program,19:21
Anonaly_anyways, I ran pkill xfdesktop, did nothing19:21
Anonaly_sudo pkill xfdesktop did nothing19:22
Anonaly_so I just ran xfdesktop and the wallpaper changed to my selected one,19:22
Anonaly_and my icons came back19:22
Anonaly_(icons where gone)19:22
Anonaly_retrojeff, strange thing is that this wasn't something that a simple reset would fix,19:23
Anonaly_as my computer is a laptop, and I have reset it many times19:23
Anonaly_I have had this problem for months19:23
Anonaly_anyways problem solved thanks for the help too19:23
retrojeffstill does not really say why your xfdesktop was not running19:29
retrojeffif it was not running what was19:29
retrojeffor why did it crash19:29
retrojeffincase there is a bug in xfdesktop that should be reported19:30
retrojeffthere are a billion bugs I wish to report in xfwm4 just too lazy to report them19:30
retrojeffI should find out what window manager mate uses19:31
Anonaly_thats why I am thinking Nautilus,19:31
retrojeffok so you think Nautilus tried to kill your xfdesktop?19:32
Anonaly_as I remember before I used to run it with the --no-desktop option, because it did something with the desktop in the gnome enviro19:32
Anonaly_yes19:32
Anonaly_it used to all the time19:32
Anonaly_(ubuntu 10.04)19:32
retrojeffI am starting to like thunar19:32
retrojeffthunar actually is more stable19:33
retrojeffnautilus just turned ugly19:33
Anonaly_yeah Thunar is good19:33
retrojeffgnome-terminal wont even start for me19:33
Anonaly_thunar you can make custom actions19:34
retrojeffif I could get my xfce-panel to show indicators I would be alot happier19:34
retrojeffyes thunar is good19:34
Anonaly_I still use Nautilus however,19:34
retrojefffor what reasons?19:34
Anonaly_you can chanve the icons of the folders19:35
Anonaly_(change)19:35
retrojeffand you can not in thunar?19:35
Anonaly_no19:35

Anonaly_yeah I can change those xfce appearance settings too19:38
Anonaly_I will show you my screenshot19:38
retrojeffmy style is set to greybird19:39
retrojeffwindows 10 style in xfce looks like garbage19:39
retrojeffno shadows in gtk applications19:39
retrojeffis a big turnoff19:39

retrojeffI did like compiz back in ubuntu 10.0419:45
Anonalyyeah it still works19:46
Anonalyyou have to compile 0.8.8 manually however19:46
Anonalyits a bit time consuming but there is a way to do it19:46
Anonalyand- if you have the nvidia drivers, there is a bug19:46
retrojeffI need to get my conky to work with my wallpaper19:46
retrojefflike you have19:46
retrojeffa solid background is ugly19:46
Anonaly(which is why I am using the ati open source driver)19:46
Anonalynow that I have my new ati card19:47
retrojeffoh I have nVidia19:47
