TJ-euviuss_: Because I can't see the screens the Setup will display though, you'll have to use your Sherlock Holmes abilities to figure these things out. 1. Goto the Security tab and see if there is some kind of 'Security' option. If there is, from what I read, that needs enabling (maybe set a password) in order to make some other settings configurable! 2. Then, on other tab(s) disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot.00:00
TJ- 3. It is possible, near the SecureBoot option, there is another option about 'Trusting' modules. When selected it opens a file-chooser in the EFI System Partition. If this is the case, navigate to the \EFI\ubuntu\ directory and mark grubx64.efy and shimx64.efi as trusted. Then save settings and exit Setup and try letting it boot. It may not at this point and you'll then need to reboot using the Live ISO so00:00
TJ-we can redo the chroot and do another 'grub-install' - you might want to copy these instructions / print them !!00:00
TJ-euviuss_: typo" grubx64.efy should be grubx64.efi00:01

ana_what can i do?00:45
holucondo you know what either of the before or after expected values are?00:45
Yukenholucon, expected values of what? File size, file name, etc etc?00:45
mcphailYuken: you may want to have a look at incrontab, which can monitor files/directories for changes and trigger scripts00:46
holuconyou said modify00:46
daftykinsana_: can you share /etc/fstab ?00:46
daftykinsana_: also "sudo blkid"00:46
YukenOne more question: what exactly would I do to get a script that would automatically do a task, every 15 minutes? I know it is simple, but I can't access any proper web browsers right now.00:47
Yukenmcphail, thank you for that info, I'll look at it.00:47
Yukenholucon, this is for a game I am hosting, where I want admin logs to be publicly available on my website - copying the log over every time a change is made (as I do not want the game files in that directory).00:47
ana_sudo blkid http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14041238/00:47
holuconmcphail, You'd be better of coding the game to read the file....00:48
holuconcoding the site*00:48
wadk1l_, I FIXED IT!!00:49
wadThe problem was Virtualbox.00:49
mcphailYuken: for your other query, have a look at crontab (rather than incrontab) which will trigger events at certain times. See "man 5 crontab" for guidance00:49
wadI uninstalled that, purged it from the machine, and grub healed itself in the process. :-D00:49
daftykinsana_: tell me if this succeeds: "sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-3.13.0-33"00:49
wadThanks for your help, and Merry Christmas and all that!00:49
* wad goes home00:49
Yukenmcphail, would I need root access to do what I'm asking?00:49
Yukenholucon, ... I really am dumb, why didn't I think of that :o00:50
TJ-ana_: can you pastebin the output of "cat /proc/mounts"00:50
mcphailYuken: I think you need to be root to alter a config file to allow your user to run incrontab (and to add your user to the appropriate group). You don't need root at all for crontab00:51
ana_daft, http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14041309/00:52
daftykinsana_: ah that's fine, repeat the command with the -generic package named, then do it as i said00:52
Yukenmcphail, thanks for the information, it's appreciated. Players would have an outrage if they couldn't see admin logs, because my fellow mods could be doing some sketchy stuff.00:52
ana_TJ, http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14041322/00:53
holuconYuken, no idea haha, but really, having the file read by the site would be better.00:53
daftykinsana_: so sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-3.13.0-33-generic linux-headers-3.13.0-3300:53
Yukenholucon, only problem is, it saves it as a .log file, instead of plain text.00:53
holucona .log is plain text00:54
holuconjust because it has a different extension, doesnt mean its not readable as plain text00:54
Yukenholucon, I know, but it refuses to be read by the game's in-game browser, or Firefox.00:54
Yukenholucon, so palyers would have to download the file then open it with a tool, which is inconvenient.00:54
holuconcouldnt you just copy the log every 15 seconds to a different filename00:54
ana_http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14041360/00:54
holuconopen it with a tool...notepad? haha00:55
Yukenholucon, that was actually my plan, when I asked to copy it whenever it was modified.00:55
daftykinsana_: repeat that for -34, -35... up to -4000:55
ana_oh00:55
holuconjust copy it ever 15 seconds instead of doing 'on modify'00:55
holuconunless you find something that offers changes tracking00:56
holuconwhich yuken suggested00:56
Yukenholucon, I'll try that out, should work. No reason why I'm asking, but wish to see the website? I just like showing it around :p00:56
holuconwhich mcphail * suggested00:56
mcphailYuken: holucon: whilst that is an option, it is ugly and inefficient compared to using inotify (incrontab)00:56
holuconmcphail, well its not being done right from the getgo :P00:57
Yukenmcphail, I'm probably going to do what holucon suggested until I can contact the owner to allow me to use incrontab.00:57
holuconYuken, can you make the game log it as a .txt?00:57
ana_error, http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14041405/00:57
Yukenholucon, sadly, no. If it were my game, yes.00:57

shafoxI have nvidia geforce graphics card, in the additional software it is also selected but when i do lspci | grep -iA2 vga i get 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09) , how to select the nvidia graphics card ??05:31
regeditshafox: look for your "nvidia settings" panel05:31
shafoxregedit: where to find it ?05:32
Gallomimiaopen terminal and type nvidia-settings05:32
regeditshafox: somewhere in your "start menu" whatever it's called, type "nvidia" it should come up05:32
regeditor what Gallomimia said05:32
regeditin there is a section called PRIME Profiles i think, is what you're looking for05:33
shafoxyes found it. in the PRIME Profiles it is already selected NVIDIA(Performance mode)05:33
regeditshafox: lspci doesnt tell you which one is selected05:34
regeditjust which devices exist05:34
regeditmesa-tools glxinfo can tell you that05:34
shafoxregedit: the settings says it is alrady using the nvidia one but the lspci says intel05:35
regeditshafox: read what i said ^05:36

shafoxregedit: i just updated the package manager and checked which one i am using in the additional drivers and this is the one i am using05:41

shafox352.63 from nvidia-35205:42

regeditmaybe it's somewhere in system settings05:44
regediti myself am actually on Kubuntu with KDE so everything is rather different (yet similar)05:45

regeditshafox: in ubuntu its called additional drivers05:46
regeditSoftware & Updates -> Additional Drivers05:46

Ghost_r00tTarminquay: that is a virtue depond on you but i would if i were you.14:45
tewardafancy: i think you're failing to read the information being provided.  Blocking the user on that IP address is ***NOT A GUARANTEE***14:45
TarminquayGhost_r00t: What's the benefit of the latest firmware?14:45
tewardafancy: the system is compromised.  That means there's likely OTHER back doors they can use to get in14:45
EriC^^teward: +114:45
tewardafancy: without a reinstall, your system remains compromised, and there could be malware on the system, or illegal items, etc.14:45
cfhowlettwhich is why we so strongly advocate reinstallation ...14:45
Ghost_r00tnot is not related to ubuntu. unless you are sitting on an old hardware14:45
tewardafancy: so either contact the administrator of the server and inform them that they need to reinstall BECAUSE it's compromised14:45
tewardafancy: or panic, because you're helpless in this case because it's not your system14:46
Ghost_r00tTarminquay: hardware support and maybe EFI14:46
TarminquayEFI = ?14:46
tewardafancy: regardless of who the person is you've been compromised - reinstallation will erase the compromise and start you anew, THEN you can set up your firewall brand new in a way that will prohibit unauthorized access to services running on ports.14:46
jester-afancy: as all you have said the best way to fix the problem is a new installation14:46
tewardafancy: without the clean reinstallation you're going toget breached again by another IP.  And another IP.  And potentially another IP.14:47
afancyjester-: well, i know re-installation solve the problem. But, i dont own this  server14:47
tewardafancy: then CONTACT the person who DOES own the server14:47
tewardafancy: and inform them that the server is COMPROMISED and should be reinstalled cleanly14:47
EriC^^afancy: it only makes sense to reinstall..14:47
tewardafancy: ESPECIALLY if the server is not yours, you should be talking to the administrators when you find this kind of thing14:47
cfhowlettafancy, you might want to advise the owner that this is probably a priority14:48
tewardafancy: the MOMENT a server is compromised, the person who DOES own the server is liable for whatever the server is being told to do by that compromiser.14:48
MACscrdid i just disable this service from automatically starting or did it just state that an startup link doesnt exist? http://pastie.org/pastes/10636134/text?key=mvzsl8twaufflytdp8phqq14:48
tewardafancy: and I recommend a "HIGH PRIORITY" email indicating to the administrator the system ***is compromised and may be being used to distribute malware, illegal items, or any other malicious actions***14:48
mgolischafancy: how does that make any difference?14:48
tewardafancy: and that they should erase and reinstall the OS as soon as possible, and take additional steps to secure their system14:49
jester-afancy: miracles God makes them and the girls of 200 months old14:49
jester-lol14:49
tewardafancy: again, whether you own the system or not, it is ***your duty*** to tell the administrator things like this, and the actual owners.14:49
tewardand i'm sorry if i seem annoyed at your handling of this, but I am - i'm an IT Security guy, I routinely have to tell people this when they asked me to try and id if they got compromised, and sometimes they were14:49
tewardand IT Security 101: If you're already compromised, chances are the same compromise is in use by other malicious threat actors as well, and even if you block one IP, they'll get past it with proxies or VPNs, or any thousands of other mechanisms14:50
tewardor have another threat actor attack you instead14:51
tewardbecause you're still compromised, and haven't resolved the issue.14:51

TarminquayGhost_r00t: Any harm leaving it as it ships from the factory?14:52

unity_nicomachus: running 14.04, and unity tweak tool was already installed17:13
jjlxunity_: you can try reinstalling it if that helps17:14
unity_jjlx: i already did17:14
nicomachusunity_: does it clear out your settings on reboot, or just not apply them at all?17:15
unity_nicomachus: it doesn't apply them at all.17:15
kubuntu-kdehello17:17
nicomachusunity_: ok. try this: in a terminal, type "gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings active false" and then "gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings active false"17:17
nicomachusscratch that, second command should be "gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings active true"17:18
nicomachussorry17:19
rypervenchekarstensrage: Also, depending on what it is, there may already be a package out there that you can use. If not, I would use "checkinstall" instead of "make install" when running the last command.17:19
unity_nicomachus: that changed my text stly17:20
unity_nicomachus: style17:20
nicomachusunity_: you did both commands? setting false and then true?17:20
unity_nicomachus: should i reboot now? because like that it doesn't work17:20
unity_nicomachus: yeah, the text style changes were applied after the first command. i was thrown to the lock screen17:21
kubuntu-kdeunity remove tweak tool and install again17:21
unity_kubuntu-kde: i did already17:21
nicomachusunity_: you were thrown to the lock screen. so were you able to input the second command?17:21
unity_nicomachus: yes, after i entered my password and started another console17:22
kubuntu-kdei am using kde17:22
nicomachusok. and did that revert the text style changes?17:22
unity_nicomachus: nope17:22
nicomachuseek. give it a reboot, see if that reverts it.17:23
unity_nicomachus: okay then17:23
karstensragerypervenche: sorry what do you mean another package i can use?17:23
karstensragebuild-essentials didnt give me autoreconf17:24
rypervenchekarstensrage: Well, the first question we need to ask is what program are you trying to compile and install?17:24
unity_nicomachus: unity tweak tool still doesn't apply changes.17:25
nicomachusunity_: are you the only user account on that machine?17:26
unity_nicomachus: yes17:26
ioriakarstensrage, do you have   autoconf pkg ?17:28
karstensrageioria: i had to install dh-autoreconf17:29
ioriakarstensrage, ok17:29

Lokiewhat steps can I take to find what stops it and  fix it?17:56
ioriaunity_    have you already rebooted ?17:56
unity_ioria: oh wait a second17:56
lrsTJ-, My guesses is that there is something wrong either with the graphics driver, sound driver, touchpad/keyboard or the resume/suspend thing... But which one I have no idea. The problem is that it freezes completely at random when Im using the computer. Ive tried to use it with touchpad disabled and usb keyboard, and havent had it crash then. But I have no idea if thats the problem... The error here seems to point towards th17:58
lrse audio pulse driver? Basically everything freezes on the screen but the stuff keeps on working, sound playing and I assume all the other processes but the image is frozen.17:58
lrsBefore, sometimes I could make it reset by shutting down the lid and then being able to log out and then log in again, but i disabled that right now to see if htats the problem. So now i just have to shut it all down17:59
lrsAnd then sometimes it gives me that error when i reboot17:59
unity_ioria: doesn't work17:59
TJ-lrs: that sounds like a graphics failure. Your screeshots show a Kernel Oops - which is a severe failure in the kernel, we need the bug report because it will have all relevant log files attached17:59
unity_ioria: settings are deleted upon closing the tweak tool17:59
lrsTJ-, How do you find it? I sent it away17:59
ioriaunity_    dpkg -l compizconfig-settings-manager17:59
unity_ioria: i know that i have it18:00
unity_ioria: compiz works fine18:00
TJ-lrs: usually when you post the bug it should open a local web browser on the bug report page so you can details of what you were doing when the failure happened. It could be there's already the same bug report by others and so instead of creating a new bug report it simply added a 'me too' to that18:00
lrsTJ-, That has never happened for me18:03
ioriaunity_    dpkg -l compiz-plugins-extra18:04
unity_ioria: not sure how to interprete that, it says "un" in the beginning18:05

tagIntel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09)23:35
TJ-tag: OK, so an Integrated on-die23:35
tagRight.23:35
tagIt's a Thinkpad X123:35
goddardhow can i tell ssh to always use a specific key file for a domain?23:36
TJ-tag: when it happens how much CPU usuage does the firefox process, or Xorg, consume. In a terminal use "top" to view it live, and press 'i' to hide the idle processes, and press 'H' to see threads as well as processes23:37
TJ-tag: if most of the CPU usage is in Xorg that points to a rendering issue23:38
sruliTJ-: neither dir, is there a way to find all files created in last 5 minutes? that might help me find the location23:38
tagTJ-, It's mostly Xorg, (79% on this current, one tab experiment, 12% by firefox).23:39
TJ-tag: right, so it looks like the rendering is at issue23:40
tagTJ- Right.  But it's something specific about how firefox is rendering these assets.23:40
TJ-sruli: using temporary snapshots then, I'd expect under /tmp/. You can do "ls -l /proc/$(pidof qemu-system-x86_64)/fd/"23:41
drokkitop.23:41
drokkitopfrance here, han solo is killed by his son kylo :(23:41
SchrodingersScat!offtopic | drokkitop, also spoilers.23:41
ubottudrokkitop, also spoilers.: #ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!23:41
tagTJ-, Same assets in chrome are fine.23:42
physixerI assume build-essential is a meta-package? what is installed as part of it?23:42
PMTDepends: libc6-dev | libc-dev, gcc (>= 4:4.9.1), g++ (>= 4:4.9.1), make, dpkg-dev (>= 1.17.11)23:42
PMTat least on my system, the exact versions may vary23:43
TJ-tag: is this any help? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HighCPU23:43
physixerwell I already built gcc/g++ in my home directory, I already have make (I think ubuntu comes pre-installed with it), then the only thing left is libc-dev, libc6-dev, and dpkg-dev23:44
k1lphysixer: see packages.ubuntu.com23:44
physixerI plan on building my own libc/libc6, so the only thing I need from the system is dpkg-dev23:44
sruliTJ-: cannot access /proc//fd: no such file or dir23:45
physixerk1l: I saw that but the build-essential page didn't provide much details. I gave 'dependencies' but not what are the contents of the essential-packages-list text file that is installed.23:45
TJ-sruli: hmmm, that means qemu-system-x86_64 isn't your QEMU hypervisor. What are you using?23:45
sruliTJ-: i use libvirt, but i created snapshot with qemu-img23:46
physixeras a matter of fact I'm think can I replace libc use completely with musl23:47
k1lphysixer: the page there shows exactly what depencies that metapackage has got23:47
physixer*I'm thinking23:47
TJ-physixer: "apt-cache depends <package>"23:47
TJ-sruli: then the snapshot will be whatever file you gave to qemu-img23:48
tagTJ-, Nope23:48
tagTJ-, Not using vino or any other VNC agent23:48
tagTJ-, Nothing about infinite loops in syslog23:48
TJ-tag: I was more thinking of the diagnostic steps, specifically the last line "Running the xserver under gdb and/or strace can help identify the loop that the xserver is stuck in. "23:48
tagTJ-, My chip does have a dedicated GPU...OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 (Broadwell GT2)23:49
tagAh23:49
physixerk1l: TJ-: but this doesn't help tell if the package is a metapackage. Which I 'assumed'. I'm also assuming a metapackage is one that only installs other packages but doesn't by itself provide anything necessary.23:49
tagperhaps I could do that23:49
TJ-physixer: right; I usually determine that indirectly by the 'Installed-Size" field value being very small23:51
k1lphysixer: "Informational list of build-essential packages" it is just a metapackage, yes23:52
drosophilehow to install steam on ubu 15.10 ?23:52

drosophileok thank you , I'll try23:54

GibstickShould I be concerned if ureadahead barfs out Error retrieving chunk extents: Operation not supported in my syslog a lot of times?23:56
TJ-sruli: you mentioned XML; that's a libvirt thing, so you'd need to look at the libvirt/virsh docs23:58
sruliTJ-: i thought qemu also uses xml, where does qemu store the snapshot ?23:58
TJ-sruli: where'ever you created it with qemu-image23:59
