nicomachusmelodie: follow these instructions to get it mounted from a live session or whatever you have: https://askubuntu.com/questions/63594/mount-encrypted-volumes-from-command-line00:11

guest85730whats the difference between compiling kernel from source(kernel.org) and installing via repo? also any side effects on installing newest kernel?00:25
daftykinsubuntu's kernels have tweaks on top of the kernel.org ones00:26
daftykinsyes installing from kernel.org is idiotic00:26
daftykins!mainline00:26
ubottuThe kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds00:26
daftykinsunless you are having specific problems there's no reason to be chasing version numbers00:26
b-yeeziAnyone going to UbuConn/Scale? I00:27

Abehello I am trying to format an mp3 player if I do mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc100:31
Abeit tells me permission denied or if I type sudo it tells me mkfs.vfat: /dev/sdc1 contains a mounted filesystem.00:31
ddellavguest85730, yes, just apt-get update and upgrade and you should get the latest kernel recommended for your ubuntu version.00:32
guest85730you mean dist-upgrade?00:32
k1lguest85730: yes, apt-get dist-upgrade00:33
k1lguest85730: yes, apt-get dist-upgrade00:33
guest85730got it00:33
k1lguest85730: but that will stay on the 3.13 or 13.19 kernel path you are already on.00:33
ddellavdist-upgrade will increment your ubuntu version, i.e. from trusty to vivid. That's going to change much more than your kernel00:33
guest85730thanks00:33
daftykinsAbe: you need to unmount it first.00:35
daftykinssudo umount /dev/sdc100:35
Abeweird that makes no sense but thanks00:35
daftykinsit does 'cause it was automounted00:35
Abestill doesn't00:36
Abebut thank you daftykins it works I will remember next time00:37
daftykinsthe error should've changed at least00:37
daftykinsah i see00:37
Abeyes it's formatted now00:37
daftykinswell you can't format something that's being accessed :>00:37
ddellavyea you'd think it should be mounted to make changes but that's not how it works. Filesystem changes need to be done when the disk is unmounted to insure no active reads or writes are going on00:37
Abeok if you say it that way, then it makes much more sense00:37
joe_dm_Hey guys. I hear Ubuntu has gone non-PPA? can anybody elaborate on this?00:38
k1ljoe_dm_: no. no changes there00:38
daftykinsjoe_dm_: sounds like you're being told lies :)00:39
joe_dm_15.1000:39
k1ljoe_dm_: except you refer to the "snappy core" but that will not be merged into the regular desktop install anytime soon00:39
joe_dm_15.10 is current desktop isnt it?00:40
daftykinsyes00:40
joe_dm_I'm confused. Does anybody know what they would be referring to if they said it had gone non-PPA?00:41
k1ljoe_dm_: no. ubuntu didnt change00:42
daftykinsno, sounds like a person speaking that doesn't know what they're saying00:42
joe_dm_hmmm okay00:42
k1lso  that is might be related to some specific software or package00:42
joe_dm_k1l, i think you're right.00:43
k1ljoe_dm_: maybe some software was included into ubuntu now and there is no ppa needed. but that is just a guess00:44
joe_dm_yeah. that's exactly what it is. makes sense reading back.00:44
joe_dm_it's about ZFS. must be included in 15.10 now00:44
joe_dm_which in itself if pretty exciting i must say00:45
AbeOk directly another question, I have an really old laptop sitting here, probably laying around here for years... there's windows xp on it, I'm a little bored and want to put lubuntu on it, thats why I needed that mp3 player for, Idk If I can boot from USB on that thing, If it doesn't let me choose USB are there ways to force it to boot up from USB? cuz I don't have a blank CD just DVD's and it doesn't have a DVD drive just CD ^^ ?00:45
=== yecril71pl1 is now known as yecril71pl
joe_dm_Abe, If it can't boot USB then this is a bios thing... not much you can do to force it. I'd be surprised if it can't though. even XP's day could usually boot USB.00:46
joe_dm_Abe, another option if you are feeling really creative is to play with PXE boot00:47
daftykinsAbe: i think an older lubuntu fits on CD still, but an XP era machine would likely have 512MB or less of RAM which i would say is a waste of time00:48
Rave1Abe   plop boot manager will  help you to boot USB on machines that would not normaly be able to do it00:51
AbeRave1: yes i've heard about plop linux00:51
TJ-joe_dm_: ZFS is included in the Ubuntu kernel for 16.0400:51
AbeRave1: never used or did anything with it though00:52
Rave1https://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html00:52
nicomachusAbe: it's not "Plop linux", it's just a boot manager, but it is handy if you have old hardware that won't boot off of a USB00:52
TJ-Abe: look at the 'plopkexec' tool especially00:52
TJ-nicomachus: it is actually, it's a minimal Linux with the USB drivers, and the kernel's inbuilt initrd image00:53
nicomachusthe problem is that Plop has to be put on a CD....00:53
nicomachusTJ-: oh. well. TIL.00:53
TJ-nicomachus: no, plopkexec works off Floppy, too00:53
Abedaftykins: I know it's a waste of time... it has 1 gb ram pentium 4 i think :D00:53
nicomachusyea but who has a floppy lying around?00:53
Rave1sure but most machines will boot a CD   I have it on floppy too for the real oldies00:53
TJ-there's 2 versions of 'plop' plopkexec 1.3 will work from floppy; the later 2.0 needs CD00:53
TJ-nicomachus: me! USB floppy drive00:54
nicomachuslol, you would. :P00:54
* daftykins has a real one, with no host to put it in00:54
daftykinsanywho, bed ;)00:54
TJ-nicomachus: the floppy image is good for writing to a CD though, for BIOSes that will emulate only a floppy on CD00:54
nllrtehi, is there somewhere i can find out exactly what packages make up a minimal install?00:54
TJ-nicomachus: ISO9660 boots can emulate hard-disk, floppy-disk, or be pure ISO9660/El Torito00:55
JimniWhat can I do with an Acer Aspire that seems to have something weird connected to it00:56

vmusrTJ-: what do you mean in partitions ?03:52
TJ-vmusr: well, if you have /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, GPT partition them identically with say sda1 for 'BIOS Boot'  sda2 sda3 ..., sdb1 for 'BIOS boot', sdb2 sdb3 ...03:54
TJ-vmusr: then create your RAID devices on sda2+sdb2, sda3+sdb3, etc03:54
TJ-vmusr: then install grub manually to /dev/sda and /dev/sdb - it'll use those 'BIOS boot' partitions for its core image03:55
vmusrTJ-: okay havent tried that one so far, i guess by default the installer uses mbr03:59
TJ-vmusr: it may do, I think it sometimes depends on the disk size, but not too sure. different release versions do different things. The key thing for a mirror is that GRUB cannot write to them, so for its purpose you need to treat the disks as 2 independents - whichever the BIOS chooses to boot from, it'll then work04:01
nicomachusSebastianTCL: you just want to set it to boot from the CD04:02
SebastianTCLso boot from live cd is first and then what s second04:03
nicomachusSebastianTCL: HDD04:03

MorrwinIs it different than VirtualBox?09:16
xcelqyes09:16
xcelqit has kvm09:16
xcelqunless your machine is older09:16
mcphaildetly: honestly, it is the only thing out there which works with a subset of discs. Even ddrescue can't handle all the intentional corruption on commercial discs09:16
detlymcphail: I haven't, but I'll give it a shot09:16
detlycheers09:17
Morrwinxcelq, kvm as in virtualize? Cpu can handle virtualization is an i7 2600k09:17
xcelqim sure it could work Morrwin kvm means =  hardware virtualzation09:17
mcphaildetly: usual caveats apply with non-open-source software. I recommend you run it in a disposable install, if you're paranoid like me. But the makers have a good reputation09:17

voozeHi, i'm currently patching the ubuntu kernel and all is well. But how do I give it a different version number, so it wont update, and I can see which kernel is which? According to wiki, I change to change /debian-master/changelog and I have put: linux (4.2.0-22.27+vooze) wily; urgency=low but I dont see a difference after compile.11:07
voozeI need to change *11:08
lotuspsychje!mainline | vooze11:08
ubottuvooze: The kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds11:08
voozelotuspsychje: thats not really useful, since I need to patch the kernel and its not in the mainline builds.11:09

ubottuvooze: The core of Ubuntu is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, and if you need to troubleshoot issues, you can try a !Mainline kernel instead, but if you insist, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile (see also !Stages)11:10
voozelotuspsychje: I did.. I can google my self. problem is when I do what it tells me "edit debian.master/changelog" nothing happens..11:11

ioriaCravateRouge,  dangerous is a big word ... but they can cause troubles . you can try Chromium  with adobe-flasplugin , enabling Canonical Partner repo .   http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/install-adobe-flash-in-ubuntu-14-04-lts/13:32

tits123hi [dk00]21:36
tits123hows it hangin21:36
[dk00]So if I use an Ubuntu server, can the host (AWS) see its contents or its data traffic?21:37
[dk00]Or the contents of its data traffic?21:38
[dk00]Or do I need to encrypt that somehow21:38
[dk00]I am super noob btw21:38
k1lthe one who got physical access to that machine can always see what is on the machine, except when its encrypted.21:39
[dk00]It's a fresh ubu server install21:39
rwwand even if it is encrypted on disk, if you're using it in memory, or if the key is in memory, you're still hosed.21:39
rwwso yes, AWS would be able to see the contents of an AWS container.21:40
[dk00]Is it encrypted?21:40
[dk00]Can I prevent that rww21:40
rwwand as you already got told in #freenode, "by using a third-party service, you HAVE to trust them. the solution to that is to not use a third-party service"21:40
k1l[dk00]: the question that you need to decide is: who can you trust not to look into your stuff.21:40
k1lif you dont trust AWS, then encrypt or use a different hoster or host yourself.21:41

simoncan someone help me with this pls?21:43
snockertonis it possible to use rsyslog to forward logs that were forwarded to it from another box?21:43
snockertoni.e. double forward?21:43
[dk00]So if I encrypt the server then aws can't see it?21:43
[dk00]The contents21:43
rww21:39 < rww> and even if it is encrypted on disk, if you're using it in memory, or if the key is in memory, you're still hosed.21:44
nicomachus[dk00]: theoretically they still could pull the key out of memory, if they wanted to badly enough.21:44
[dk00]Can that be prevented?21:45
frostschutz[dk00], no.21:45
k1l[dk00]: since you seem to have super suspicious data, dont host them anywhere else than on your own machine.21:45
nicomachusyea, you could not use AWS or host yourself.21:45
rwwfor the nth time, if you're using a third-party system, you have to trust that party. if you don't like that, host it yourself21:45
[dk00]I'm trying to be a secure as possible while hosting it there21:46
k1l[dk00]: that doesnt match21:46
[dk00]Max security at aws21:46
[dk00]Sure it does21:46

[dk00]Which would make it harder21:47
[dk00]But not impossible21:47
nicomachusnot touching this... way too sketchy.21:47
[dk00]Sketchy?21:47
[dk00]Lol21:47
[dk00]Thanks for judging21:48
[dk00]What else can be encrypted21:48
[dk00]Just the disk?21:48
nicomachus[dk00]: you're either unnecessarily concerned about AWS getting into your business, or you're concerned because the contents of the AWS server are something that AWS wouldn't want on their servers. so, yes. sketchy.21:48
[dk00]Or I just take security seriously21:49
[dk00]So stop being an ass21:49
nicomachusthen don't host on a third party server.21:49
[dk00]Did I ask you where to hos21:49
[dk00]host21:49
nicomachus[dk00]: try ##security.21:49
frostschutzaws is super expensive anyhow21:49
[dk00]They have a free tier21:50
k1l[dk00]: as a user who is already annoying with asking the same question that was already answered 10 times i would not start to call other names.21:50
rwwI'm noting that this seems to have been triggered by [dk00] realizing IRCCloud can read his IRC traffic. It's unlikely he's hosting anything important on AWS.21:50
rwwor sketchy, for that matter21:50
[dk00]I am not21:50
rwwIt is, however, a complete waste of time, since Amazon doesn't care about his IRC traffic.21:50
[dk00]But disk encryption sounds like something that could be useful21:51
TJ-disk ecnryption only protects when the server is powered down21:52
[dk00]No such thing as memory encryption?21:52

jefffan24I have 2 hard drives, and one has hte bootloader the other ubuntu. The one with the bootloader is going bad.  Got a partition created on ubuntu drive and everything was going well until I ran boot-repair its now stuck at `Purge kernels then reinstall last kernel sdb1 (ins). this may require several minutes`.  Any ideas what to do to fix this21:54
jefffan24Its been stuck at that step for over an hour21:54
thegreen2undredbut that would be extremely academic and not practically possible21:54
thegreen2undredthe only benefit would be protection from someone hacking the path between cpu & ram anyway which would be easier to solve with an iron box21:55

thegreen2undredjefffan24 you can grub-install to a new partition on a different drive, grub update on your existing location wouldnt help with the hardware failure21:56
jefffan24I'm running this from a live cd21:56
jefffan24forgot to mention that21:57
jefffan24thegreen2undred, if I run grub install on that partition, will that handle the MBR and making that drive bootable?21:58
thegreen2undredthen grub-install is definitely going to be your go-to, do you have space on your good drive to make a boot partition?21:58
[dk00]Ok so how do I encrypt the disk?21:58
jefffan24yeah its already made21:59
neredsenvyAnyone know a fix for lightdm white screen problem. Tried rebooting lightdm to no success.21:59
neredsenvyHappens every time I use a second screen21:59
jefffan24shrunk sdb1 (took forever) then prepended a partition of 1GB21:59
jefffan24and made it ext421:59
thegreen2undredMBR/gpt (partition table) is already in place if you have a partition on the drive, we wont be dealing with that unles you are working with an empty disk21:59
jefffan24its now sdb321:59
Bashing-omjefffan24: Is the liveDVD the same release as theat of the installed 'buntu ? - then intall grub to sdb's MBR . reset bios to boot from that 3nd hard drive .22:00

thegreen2undredi cant google it at the moment but it will be something to the effect of : grub-install /dev/sdb322:00
jefffan24Bashing-om, they are both 14.04 I'm not sure about the minor versoin22:00
jefffan24and is it alright ot just stop the boot repair?22:00
thegreen2undredgoogle that command and you should be able to find some helpful context22:00
thegreen2undredthen you'll maybe want to run sudo grub-update (sorry if my commands are only loosley accurate) not on my own machine to verify22:01
Bashing-omjefffan24: That will be fine, next is how is sdb partitioned ? GPT does require a /boot partition .22:01
TJ-thegreen2undred: jefffan24 it is VERY unlikely you want to install grub to a partition with "grub-install /dev/sdb3" - that will not work22:01
jefffan24Bashing-om, sdb3 is 1GB its the first partition in the list, then sdb1 883GB, then sdb2 (extended) > sdb5 swap.22:02
thegreen2undredTJ- i'm a bit weak on my boot partition work, none else was responding so i offered google'able answers22:02
jefffan24thanks for your help thegreen2undred appreciate it :)22:02
thegreen2undredjefffan24, besides getting grub installed to that partition you can use gparted to enable the boot flag22:03
Bashing-omjefffan24: You make up that sdb1 partition ? .. best show us the partitioning ' pastebin ' sudo parted -l ' .22:03
TJ-jefffan24: I think what you need is to ensure there's a file-system in /dev/sdb3, mount it to some mountpoint, then do something like "grub-install --boot-directory /path/to/mountpoint/of/sdb3 /dev/sdb "22:03
jefffan24TJ-, ext422:04
thegreen2undredha, so it will be more in the form of grub-install --root-directory=/path/to/OS /dev/sdb322:04
Bashing-omjefffan24: TJ- wrote the book on booting . we follow his guidance .22:05
TJ-thegreen2undred: NO! forget /dev/sdb3 that is wrong, it should be /dev/sdb22:05
thegreen2undredthanks for the input22:05
jefffan24ok Bashing-om thanks, just for reference here is that `sudo parted -l` output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1414849122:06
TJ-thegreen2undred: the device passed to "grub-install" is where the MBR boot-strap code goes. "--boot-directory X" sets the location where grub-install copies its modules.22:06
TJ-jefffan24: I missed the earlier discussions; is the the disk partitioned with GPT, or MSDOS/MBR ?22:06
thegreen2undredTJ- awesome, that helps make sense of some things I was missing22:06
jefffan24partition table is msdos? I'm not sure exactly if that's what you are looking for22:07
Bashing-omTJ-: jefffan24 " Partition Table: msdos " . :)22:07
[dk00]So guys is there anything I do to scramble the memory?22:07
TJ-thegreen2undred: if you're interested https://iam.tj/kb/pc/boot/22:07
TJ-jefffan24: OK, so, when 'grub-install' does its thing it needs somewhere to put its core.img, which is approx 1MB in size. Often that is in 'spare' sectors before the first partition, unless you've reserved a partition for it especially.22:08
thegreen2undredTJ- bookmarked and btw its beautiful22:09
jefffan24TJ-, reserved a partition for it specifically22:09
TJ-jefffan24: looking at your parted output22:09
TJ-jefffan24: It's not quite as you need it to slip GRUB boot in there; can we get some more detail with "pastebinit <( sudo parted /dev/sdb unit s print )"22:11
TJ-jefffan24: grub-install needs to separate spaces: 1. for core.img (~1MB), and 2. for the grub modules (usually mounted at /boot/grub/)22:12
jefffan24http://paste.ubuntu.com/14148781 <--- TJ- the command you told me to run22:12
TJ-jefffan24: OK, measurements are all in sectors (s) now; we can see the partitions start at 2048, and with the MBR in sector 0, that leaves plenty of 'spare' sectors in-between for GRUB to slip its core.img, so that's #1 solved.22:14
TJ-jefffan24: so /dev/sdb3 can be used for GRUB's 'root' file-system.22:14
TJ-jefffan24: is /dev/sdb3 file-system currently mounted?22:14
jefffan24no but it can be22:15

TJ-jefffan24: "sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /target"22:18
TJ-jefffan24: "sudo umount /dev/sdb3"22:18
jefffan24TJ-, sdb1 was already mounted (I think from boot-repair) I didn't do it22:18
jefffan24should I unmount it first?22:18
TJ-jefffan24: umount it22:18
TJ-jefffan24: we don't want to get confused. We want to end up with the root file-system of sdb1 at /target/22:19
tittybot69join #tf222:19
jefffan24its saying sdb1 is busy22:19
jefffan24probably from the failed boot-repair22:19
TJ-jefffan24: you have tools open in the mountpoint22:19
TJ-jefffan24: possible need to "cd /" or close a GUI file-browser?22:19
jefffan24only thing open is the terminal22:20
TJ-jefffan24: try "sudo umount --lazy /dev/sdb1"22:21
jefffan24unrecognized option --lazy22:21
TJ-jefffan24: which ubuntu release is that? "cat /etc/issue"22:21
jefffan2414.04.322:22
TJ-jefffan24: Ahh, then it doesn't have the long option; use "sudo umount -l /dev/sdb1"22:22
jefffan24that worked :)22:23
TJ-jefffan24: now "mount" may show that /dev/sdb1 is no longer mounted22:23
jefffan24ok sdb1 is now mounted at target22:24
TJ-jefffan24: Good, that's the one we want. if you do "ls -l" you see all the root-file-system directories like bin/, usr/ var/ etc/ ?22:24

TJ-jefffan24: "for N in proc sys dev dev/pts run; do sudo mount --bind /$N /target/$N; done "22:26
TJ-jefffan24: and now we'll enter into that system properly with "sudo chroot /target" - at this point you're 'root' in the 'broken' system22:26
jefffan24and I just type that for and do in the command line on one line correct?22:27
TJ-jefffan24: yes, type everything inside the double-quotes I use22:27
TJ-jefffan24: but not the double-quotes themselves22:27

daftykinsthat in itself is a big waste of resources22:29

TJ-jefffan24: so, *before*22:29
jefffan24mount: mount point /target/dev/ptr does not exist22:29
TJ-jefffan24: sorry, *AFTER* !!!22:29

MACscrI have no idea what container is even causing the issue22:54
Guest15186can I change my nick ?22:54
TJ-MACscr: check the pid22:54
MACscrTJ-: but its already gone22:54
mint_I'm running linux mint from a live usb and i find it's a little slow. Anyone know if it's because it's through a live usb that it's slow?22:54
CubeIXGuest15186: /nick22:54
TJ-MACscr: comm=ps suggests it was /bin/ps22:55
k1l!mint | mint_22:55
ubottumint_: Linux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu. Please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org22:55
simondaftykins, do you know if I'll choose "enable CSM" it'll help somehow?22:55
Guest15186thank you22:55
k1lmint_: just use the mint channels that are made autojoin on your irc client.22:55
mint_thanks22:55
MACscrTJ-: yep, but i still have no idea why that would cause an apparmor issue or what container its from22:55
daftykinssimon: you must boot and install ubuntu in the same mode as the Windows there already is22:55
TJ-MACscr: you ran 'ps' on the host as UID 0 ?22:56
curlyearsk1l:  believe it or not, no joy.  )-:22:56
MACscrTJ-: huh? i am not doing anything manually to cause it. this issue is happening though a few dozen times an hour22:56
curlyearshi, TJ-22:56
Guest15186done22:57
k1lcurlyears: set the sdb to be the firs in boot order in bios22:57
k1l*first22:57
TJ-MACscr: ok, so something else is running 'ps' from a script maybe? maybe you've installed some monitoring tooling?22:57
curlyearsK1`l:   I beleive it is, but how do I contorl whish HDD the BIOS boots from?   the only choices I seem to had are hdd or other non-hdd devices22:58
=== Guest15186 is now known as shadow1
jefffan24TJ-, grub came up and I am current logged into my existing ubuntu instance.22:58
jefffan24Thank you so much!22:58
simondaftykins, in the installation wizard, when I clicked "Next" I saw an confirmation about "efi mode" or "uefi mode" (I don't remember exactly). I clicked "Go Back" because I wanted to change something in the previous screen, and now I can't see this dialog anymore22:58
simondaftykins, not even after reboot22:58
=== shadow1 is now known as Guest97245
k1lcurlyears: look into the biod settings or see if there is a "what to boot from menu" when you press f10 or f12 or such (look into the handbook)22:58
simondaftykins, do you have an idea how to restore this dialog?22:59
daftykinssimon: which install wizard? if you ran wubi.exe to install ubuntu from inside windows, we don't support that22:59
Guest97245that's better22:59
curlyearsk1l:  that's what I'm telling you, there doesn't appear to be any control over WHICH hdd it boots from22:59
k1lcurlyears: i doubt that.23:00
simondaftykins, the install wizard that comes when I choose "Install Ubuntu" in the boot menu23:00
curlyearsk1l: alll it letsa me do is choose the boot order23:00
MACscrTJ-: i have like 12 containers, and every container does have check_mk and snmp running23:00
daftykinssimon: ah, well the link i gave you should have explained the difference between booting your USB flash drive as EFI or not23:00
MACscrbut i have no idea why their would be any issues running ps commands in a container23:01
TJ-jefffan24: great to hear, that was pretty easy :)23:01
MACscrthey are all privileged containers as well23:01
MACscrwhats the point of this audit trail if it doesnt give me a way to find out exactly what caused it?23:01
MWMIm going to move my intiallation to a new HDD but Im concerned that I may botch the process.  Surefire tutorial somewhere?  Ive heard to sue dd Im nearly certain I will botch that one23:02
TJ-MACscr: it'll be some tight apparmor profile obviously - looks pretty sensible not allowing 'trace' by default. Check the apparmor profiles themselves23:02
simondaftykins, from your link "- If the BIOS is set up to boot the CD in UEFI mode, then you will see the screen below:". This is what I see. But I still can't see the SSD.23:02
daftykinsMWM: clonezilla23:02
MACscrgrr, i dont know crap about apparmor23:02
TJ-MACscr: that audit message gives you everything you need to sort it23:03
TJ-MACscr: as it says, the profile blocking access is "lxc-container-default" - and you know it's DENYing "trace" too,23:03
daftykinssimon: are you typing from that live session now? (boot to 'try' mode)23:03
MWMdaftykins: is clonzilla idiotproof ?  alternatively can I use dd and move it to an existing drive in the system and then remove the old one ?  Will I still boot afterwords?23:03
daftykinsis the new drive bigger?23:04
MWMdaftykins: very much so.23:05
simondaftykins, right now I'm chatting from another PC. why?23:05
curlyearsk1l:  I'll go try looking for that option, but I don't thinkn it's there23:05
TJ-MACscr: looking at the apparmor profiles the lxc seems to start with /etc/apparmor.d/lxc-containers >> /etc/apparmor.d/lxc/lxc-default23:05
daftykinssimon: you can run some commands from the terminal to check what it sees23:05
daftykinsMWM: come online from a live session then you can dd the two disks direct.23:05
TJ-right! back to my coding23:06
MWMdaftykins:  then I can just pull the old disk and reboot? or will I ahve to change UUID in the fstab or something?23:06
MWMthanks BTW23:06
daftykinsMWM: one step at a time.23:06
daftykinsright now you've got a map showing you where the bridge is, lets walk up to it first ;)23:07
simon235daftykins: OK, now I'm typing from the live session23:07
MACscrTJ-: what does this part mean? peer="unconfined"23:08
MACscri do have two lxc guests with "lxc.aa_profile = unconfined" in their lxc_name/config profiles23:08
daftykinssimon235: in a terminal, run "sudo parted -l | nc termbin.com 9999"23:08
MWMnot going to be making the swtich for a few days yet.  Im just making sure I dont botch the job right now.  Ill drop back in when Ive done the work in dd.  Thanks23:08
simon235daftykins: It says "Use netcat."23:09
daftykinssimon235: alternatively then, "sudo apt update && sudo apt install pastebinit" then "sudo parted -l | pastebinit"23:10

Platypus2kcan't figure out ssh.. tried ssh user@domain.com:50022, ssh user@domain.com -p 50022 and ssh -p 50022 user@domain.com, but neither works.. I know the domain part and port forward works, because I can ssh from my tablet23:12
daftykinssimon235: mmm sure enough a 1TB storage disk only; what make + model system is this?23:12
daftykinsPlatypus2k: don't try and get it all at once, see if it gets through without specifying a user to start with23:13
daftykinsalso consider -vv on ssh to have more idea what it's trying23:13
simon235daftykins: it is asus g752. Is this what you mean?23:13
daftykinsyep, lets see23:14
Platypus2kdifferent usernames and nonstandard ports. thanks for verbose tip23:14
simon235daftykins: btw, do you know how to prevent the data from live sessions to be saved? I missed a dialog about efi/uefi when I first came into the installation wizard. Then anytime I restart I have my checkbox/radio buttons pre-chosen in the wizard23:16
simon235and it remembers I accidently clicked23:16
daftykinsPlatypus2k: i know but you don't need to get the user right to see the prompt comes up, if you're not getting that far - so try e.g. "ssh hostname -p 50022" and "ssh hostname:50022" with no user stuff23:16
simon235"cancel" on uefi/efi dialog23:16

simon235daftykins: idk, maybe it saves on the USB or something, but I have the browser history from the previous session.23:17

curlyearsk1l:  as I thought.  I went through every menu in my BIOS, no option for choosing which drive to boot from23:23
daftykinssimon: no, 128GB is barely enough for just Windows' install23:23

daftykinsxcelq: it's a 128GB SSD beside a 1TB HDD, i don't see what you mean :)23:26
curlyearsOK, that's on a CD, so off I go again.  this is getting quite tedious, it takes a considerable to to boot from the Live CD23:26
daftykinssimon: because in time it'll grow. i would not attempt to resize it, in fact i think ubuntu is badly suited to put on that system at all23:26
curlyearsk1l:  I aM QUITE CERTAIN YOU ARE FINDING THIS TEDIOUS AS WLL23:26

curlyearsOK23:27
daftykinssimon: i think the SSD in that laptop is too new for ubuntu to make use of, anyway23:27
simondaftykins, why?23:27
daftykinssimon: because it's likely M.2 PCI-Express and it isn't supported well yet, in your dmesg i can only see the DVD and 1TB HDD get detected23:28
daftykinsone moment let me check with someone23:28
simonI aim to use mostly Ubuntu, and barely use windows, so I guess it won't grow rapidly23:29
simondaftykins, ^^23:29
daftykinssimon: then it's too new for Linux i'm afraid23:29

daftykinssimon235: can you go back to Windows and run crystaldiskinfo and screenshot to imgur.com of the SSD?23:40
TJ-simon235: daftykins as I said earlier; we've seen similar systems where the SSD is actually on a special Intel caching controller and is not seen directly by the OS23:40
