RoadRunnerCan't test and install Linux images from live USB's on one of my comps.  Get "Boot error" right after BIOS's POST.  But the same live USB's work OK on another comp.  Tried diff physical flash sticks, diff images (ubuntu, kubuntu, lubuntu).  Diff writing apps (Unetbootin and Universal USB installer). Reformatted a test ubuntu partition and renewed the boot sector from an older WinXP image (dual boo01:12
RoadRunnert system).  Insured USB should boot 1st in  BIOS, but when trying to boot into a usb - the result on that box is always the same: "Boot error".  Any suggestions?01:12

Aranjedeath-has anyone observed an updated graphics stack helping the stability of 15.10 on intel gpus?02:44
Aranjedeath-I see notes _everywhere_ that this combination is terrible no good, but I'm not looking forward to suffering through ~4 more months of crash to login screen02:44
VeryBewitchingAranjedeath-: You're using an integrated GPU?02:46
Aranjedeath-I am! laptop :)02:48
VeryBewitchingAnd are you asking about the integrated intel microcode driver?02:49
Aranjedeath-I doubt it. I've already got a brand new kernel, and that's where I'd expect something like that to hide.02:50
VeryBewitchingGo to System Settings -> Driver Manager02:50
VeryBewitchingSee if there are options there for your GPU02:50
Aranjedeath-using it already02:51
Aranjedeath-only one option02:51
VeryBewitchingAnd when you login it dumps you to the SDDM login screen again?02:51
Aranjedeath-no02:51
VeryBewitchingAh, OK02:52
VeryBewitchingIf you can run system settings, turn off desktop effects and compositing02:52
VeryBewitchingSee if that helps.02:52
Aranjedeath-It's interesting because I see other people's notes about kde5+intel being terrible, but mine is most triggered by opening tabs in chrome02:53
Aranjedeath-which is... hilarious02:53
Aranjedeath-there's several bugs in the kde tracker about intel driver + kde5, and basically the advice is move to 16.04 alpha02:54
Aranjedeath-but I wish I knew what that actually changed, because if it's just newer xorg+intel driver or something, this can be done without OS update02:54
Aranjedeath-but I think the details of what's fixed between the two aren't being made as public so as not to confuse people just looking for the steps to a fix02:55
VeryBewitchingBoth my desktop and laptop are NVidia GPUs02:55
VeryBewitchingWell if you're experiencing a crash by opening a tab in Chrome, I would assume this has to do with Chrome02:56
Aranjedeath-but like I already compile every rc of a kernel (mostly for cfq scheduler)02:56
Aranjedeath-VeryBewitching:) this is not useful, though, because no bug reports are sent to anyone when it crashes like that. it hasn't improved in new versions of chrome, and "changing browsers" isn't a choice I'm willing to make02:57
VeryBewitchingWhat does ~/.xsession-errors say?02:58
Aranjedeath-I'd have to catch it right after it crashes to see. it's full of errors from syncthing right now02:59
VeryBewitchingAlso, add a bug on launchpad for it under 15.10 to be sure it's tracked.  Search for duplicates and site them yourself too.02:59
Aranjedeath-I'm sure it is, since there are bugs for it upstream in kde people's bugtracker02:59
Aranjedeath-that's where I found info02:59
VeryBewitchingThe Kubuntu 15.04 release saw a lot of bugs on older laptops too, there were more than numerous reports about Plasma 5 and this.  bbiab, gotta take cookies out of the oven.03:00
Aranjedeath-yeah this is intel 4600, so not too old03:01
Aranjedeath-I'll check that file next time it blows up03:02
Aranjedeath-it's got 76k lines right now, so not easy to find a crash03:02
=== struk|desk|away is now known as struk|desk
Aranjedeath-I wonder if it's malvertising tickling something. I get some great flash player errors in the browser console when running without an ad blocker. I think it's just supposed to crash a process, not the whole desktop though lol03:07
=== shadeslayer_ is now known as shadeslayer
VeryBewitchingNot sure.  If there's an existing ticket in launchpad, add to it so they know it affects multiple users; if not, create one for it.  That's about all I can suggest.  I tend to run Kubuntu on a desktop PC primarily.03:40

Aranjedeath-trying to delete multiple kernel build folders, I now remember why one doesn't do that through a gui05:49
VeryBewitchingAranjedeath-: If you're going to be mucking with kernels, I'd highly suggest using VirtualBox so you can avoid creating base system instability.05:50
Aranjedeath-grub's never broken in between boots, so that's not necessary06:01
Aranjedeath-make deb-pkg works great for years now06:02
Aranjedeath-I make oldconfig the config ubuntu ships, anyway06:02

Bomber4ChatsHi ask17:45
Bomber4ChatsAll*17:45
geniiVoyage: Do you have the partner repositories enabled?17:45
genii!partner17:45
ubottuCanonical's partner repositories provide a location for software vendors to publish applications. The repo itself can be added by running this in a !terminal: « sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" »17:45
Bomber4ChatsHey, I'm having trouble with plasmashell, specifically the Taskbar.17:46
Bomber4ChatsThe Taskbar gets stuck in a certain state and doesn't show the latest status of the desktop (what apps are open. It's just frozen. Trying to reform search through the launcher or alt-f2 will freeze at some point17:46
Bomber4ChatsThere's just something GUI issue going on. That along with the message "*ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled"17:46
Voyagegenii,  I have canonical partner repos enabled. but if you want me to give a command to be sure; I can17:47
geniiVoyage: If they are already enabled, thats fine then. It's where the officially packaged skype is found.17:47
Voyagegenii,  ok then why I am getting skype and skype-bin or 86 error?17:48
geniiVoyage: Did you do a: sudo apt-get update   before trying to install things? If not try that first17:49
Voyageyes, its in the pastie I sent17:49
Voyagehttp://pastie.org/10649481#1,3,24,133,227,238-23917:49
geniiVoyage: What says result of: apt-cache policy skype-bin17:51
Voyagegenii,  last paste http://pastie.org/10649534#1,18,145,246,262,28017:55
geniiVoyage: apt-config dump | grep Arch    ( so we can see if you have 32bit architecture enabled)17:57
Voyagegenii,   at bottom http://pastie.org/10649540#1,18,145,246,262,280,29317:59
geniiVoyage: So 32bit is enabled. Perhaps try: sudo apt-get install skype-bin:i38618:01
Voyagegenii,  at bottom http://pastie.org/10649551#1,18,145,246,262,280,293,30518:04
geniiBTW you don't need to re-paste the entire contents every time :)18:04
Voyageya but good for record18:05
geniiSo for the those other packages it lists, do an apt-cache policy for those and see what it says about their version numbers and what repos they will be installed from18:06
geniiLooks like probably somewhere along the way there is a PPA version interfering with official versions18:08
Voyageok18:09
Voyagegenii,  http://pastie.org/10649575#1,18,145,246,262,280,293,305,32318:13
geniiSee if: sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx:i386     ...works or not18:16
Voyagelibgl1-mesa-glx:i386 : Depends: libudev1:i386 but it is not going to be installed or                                libudev0:i386 but it is not installable18:17
geniiWe're in dependency hell now ...18:18
Voyageya :)18:18
Voyageisnt it the job of package manager or apt to resolve them?18:19
geniiProbably the prudent thing to do then is grab the deb file for skype-bin, open it, alter the versions it has verdependencies, repack it and install it18:19
geniiVoyage: Partially, yes. But also inside the packages themselves18:20
VoyageI did the .deb file from skype.com too. it also gives errors18:20
geniiBetter to use the one from partner repo18:20
Voyagehm18:20
Voyageok, so how exactly to proceed from here?18:20
geniiVoyage: Make a temp dir:  mkdir temp   then go to it: cd temp     download the deb: apt-get download skype-bin    open it: ar -x <whatever the filename is>18:21
geniiVoyage: Then: mkdir control     then: tar -xvf control.tar.gz -C control         ( it may be different last extension on the control file like xz or something else, use that if it's different)18:22
geniiVoyage: After this: pastebinit control/control    ...so I can see the contents and make the needed changes for you to do18:24
genii..or you can add to your existing pastebin with cat control/control     LOL18:25
Voyagedidnt understood tar -xvf control.tar.gz -C control18:25
geniiVoyage: Like I said, might be a different extension, like control.tar.xz   or another one like control.tar.z  or such. Use whatever filename extension it shows in result of ls18:26
geniiwork, afk a few minutes18:27
Voyage$ tar -xvf control.tar.gz -C control18:27
Voyagetar: control: Cannot open: No such file or directory18:27
Voyagethe name of existing file is control.tar.gz18:28
VoyageI just dont understand -C control18:28
geniiVoyage: The -C control   ..is supposed to untar it into the directory called control18:30
geniiVoyage: so: mkdir control     ...because it doesn't seem it got made yet18:30
* genii runs back to work for a bit18:30
Voyagek18:33
Voyagegenii,  control$ ls18:33
Voyageconffiles  control  md5sums18:33
geniiVoyage: pastebin now the contents of the file in there called control   ( this is what tells the dependencies it wants)18:43
Voyagehttp://pastie.org/1064963018:44
geniiVoyage: Do you know how to use nano?18:45
Voyageyes18:46
geniiGood :)  Open the control file with nano. On line 8, change libqtwebkit (>=2.2~2011week36)   to just libqtwebkit (do not forget to keep the comma after it)  ... at the end of that same line, remove  libgl1-mesa-glx and the comma just before it. Save the file18:51
geniiVoyage: Sorry for lag, back and forth from work to the computer here...18:52
Voyagenp18:52
Voyagehm18:52
Voyagegenii, done18:54
geniiSorry, libqtwebkit4 ( not just libqtwebkit )18:54
Voyagesor remove both?18:54
geniiVoyage: No, is fine18:55
VoyageI removed libgl1-mesa-glx18:55
geniiVoyage: Now, are you in the control dir still, or the one up from there?18:55
Voyageyes18:55
Voyagein control18:55
Voyagedo I need to delete libqtwebkit4?18:56
geniiOK. So cd ..   ( to get one up from there)18:56
Voyageok18:56
Voyagenow?18:56
geniiVoyage: No, that dep is fine, it's the other which has probs18:56
Voyageok18:56
VoyageI am up by cd..18:56
geniiNow we have to make a new control.tar.gz with:   tar -cvf control.tar.gz control/*18:57
Voyagegoing to delete the old one though18:57
Voyageold control.tar.gz18:58
geniiThen add that back into the deb file with: ar -r <debfilename> control.tar.gz18:58
Voyagedone18:58
geniiYes, it should overwrite the one currently there18:58
Voyagedone18:58
Voyagewhat now?18:59
geniiNow you should be able to install it with: sudo dpkg -i <debfilename>18:59
* genii goes for a smoke18:59
Voyagegenii,  but those are only .gz tar files18:59
Voyageits not a .deb file.19:00
geniiVoyage: Those gz files are whats inside of the deb. If you replaced the control.tar.gz with the one we altered, and then added it back into the deb file with the ar -r command, the deb file in that directory will have the changes we made to the control file19:04
Voyageok19:05
Voyageso no need to do anything19:05
Voyagegoingn to do dpkg -i thedeb.deb19:05
geniiWhere I put <debfilename> you are to replace that with the name of the actual filename of the deb in the temp dir19:05
