[06:33] ok i need to change my alsa and pulseaudio sample rates to 44100 can anyone tell me where the config files for these are by default? [06:48] please help me [11:09] quick question should i use current or lts, with ubuntu studio? [17:10] Hi, I have a quick question. I have been using Debian based OS for seven years now. However, I notice that for seven years my VLC would continue to be 2.1.6 Rincewind. [17:11] I know I can add PPA, but why won't the more recent version of VLC be in "Ubuntu Software Center". I hope someone can help. [17:12] !latest | erick_ [17:12] erick_: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa. [17:13] You meant it is much more stable if I choose the one from Ubuntu? [17:13] yes [17:14] bleeding edges are bloody. [17:14] I thought someone might forget. It was the same version for six years though. [17:15] How do I make sure someone won't forget to do it? [17:15] !info vlc [17:15] vlc (source: vlc): multimedia player and streamer. Download at http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/ - CHECK FOR POINT RELEASES at http://releases.ubuntu.com - Release Info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes [20:38] Hello! I'm really new to linux and I recently bought a keyboard with midi support but unfortunately in MIDI tab in the connect section of qjackctl, my keyboard doesn't show up, but in windows I just plug it and it works, is there something I can do? [20:44] Hazward: How does it plug in? [20:44] USB? MIDI interface? [20:44] usb [20:44] [ lsusb ] please? ( !pastebin ) [20:49] when I type lsusb and amidi -l here's the output: http://pastebin.com/ra3HFzjF [20:50] Hazward: a2j_control ehw start should work. [20:51] * OvenWerks is assuming that your keyboard does show up in the "ALSA" tab. [20:52] Yeah, check in ALSA. [20:54] thanks a lot I works now! is it because my keyboard is considered a legacy midi device? [20:59] Hazward: no, it is just that the jackd2 devs have not seen fit to include the a2j code in jack. [21:00] (jackd1 does) [21:00] ok so using jack1 instead of jack2 should fix this issue? [21:01] Hazward: most people add the above line to their qjackctl config in the options tab for Execute script after startup [21:01] jack1 on ubuntu will remove a pile of stuff and break other things. [21:02] oh ok thanks thas pretty simple, I'm not using ubuntu, I just came here because I know the people here are really good with audio on linux [21:03] * OvenWerks waits for jackd3 to finally come out and replace both. [21:03] Hazward: no problem, any debian derived system may have similar issues. [21:04] any linux distro you should say, I'm running Arch and I've been having major issues with MIDI devices and Ardour [21:16] OvenWerks: last question, in Ardour, when I press on some keys I see the volume level move (up and down) but there's not sound, I'm using the calf plugins [21:17] Hazward: are the meters moving? [21:17] yes [21:17] where is the output routed? [21:18] Do you see meters on the master channel move too? [21:18] yes [21:19] MIDI -> Organ(Calf) -> Ardour Master -> System Playback [21:19] at the bottom of the mixer strip there is a button just above the comment (cmt) button. WHat does it say? [21:20] system playback is which card? [21:20] In qjackctl it only say system so I guess it's pulseaudio [21:21] Are you by chance using one card for input and another to listen? [21:21] No it is not PA [21:21] Jack will only connect to a real hw device. [21:22] Nope i'm only using one card for output, the only input I have is the organ controlled by my keyboard [21:34] not really sure where to go at this point ... make sure alsa mixer is not turned down/muted... but if desktop sound was working it should be fine. [21:35] type cd /tmp && wget http://jackaudio.org/downloads/adevices.sh && bash ./adevices.sh [21:36] into a terminal and use pastebin to put it in and give me the pastebin url [21:37] * OvenWerks is not sitting for long at his computer but doing othger things too. [21:42] the output: http://pastebin.com/nMq4R9as [21:43] Jack was not running when you did that. [21:44] Oh, ya it is but using the dummy backend :) [21:44] You need to configure qjackctl right. [21:45] Jack is not (right now) connected to any audio interface. [21:46] so the sound is going to /dev/null or equiv. [21:47] oh ok, I'll set it up corrently [21:53] Hey there, is anyone here available to try to help me with a problem i have with Jack and pulseaudio? [22:31] reydempto: What kind of problem are you having? [22:38] Whell mainly a problem with pulseaudio not letting go of my soundcard to allow jack to take control [22:38] i just got some assistance in #jack [22:38] trying it out right now, by installing cadence [22:39] and woah zequence cadence sure didn't work [22:40] here's the error log of my problem [22:40] https://dpaste.de/WNHD [22:42] I'm completely at a loss now, been 4 hours+ of troubleshooting this, just to make some hammond sounds for fun [22:44] I am checking my country's equivalent of craigslist for cheap/free midi keyboards :P my recording studio consists of two reel to reel tape recorders and a drum machine and I was reluctant to bring any computers into the mix for exactly this reason hahaha [22:45] so i am just gonna go for a crappy casio with a headphone jack or line out :) [22:56] reydempto: Are you running Ubuntu Studio? [22:59] pulseaudio normally lets go of the card in favor of jackd. There's some code in pulseaudio that makes that happen. Not sure though if that happens with jackd1. Checking now [22:59] But, it would help knowing which distro and release you are on in any case [22:59] A default Ubuntu Studio installation should not give you problems with pulse + jack, rather the opposite [22:59] Nah, I am running xubuntu 14.04 LTS [23:00] Did you add yourself to audio group? [23:00] I know I am in KINDA the wrong place, but i figured folks here and also in #jack would be generally knowledgable on the subject [23:01] reydempto: It's ok. You're in the right place here too [23:01] The problem is you're running jackd1 [23:01] I am? [23:01] Yep [23:01] i am in the audio group btw [23:01] Good [23:01] I'm pretty sure you are running jackd1. You can try installing jackd2 [23:02] jackd2 is installed [23:02] jackd2 [23:02] Really? [23:02] well i installed it myself with apt-get [23:03] oh [23:03] i installed just 'jackÄ [23:03] 'jack' [23:04] reydempto: What does this command return: dpkg -s jackd2 | grep Status [23:05] hold up i uninstalled jack and am installing jackd2 now [23:05] i stand corrected [23:05] Ok. Should solve your pulseaudio problems [23:05] we shall see! [23:05] it is installed. i will try firing it up now.. [23:07] well, trying to start jack via qjackctl gave this error log https://dpaste.de/ymdL [23:08] reydempto: Try logging out and logging in again, or even a reboot, just to make sure nothing is running in the background making your life sour [23:08] will do, brb! [23:14] back, okay let's see what happens [23:14] woah [23:14] its active [23:14] Fri Jan 8 00:14:17 2016: New client 'qjackctl' with PID 3561 [23:14] :D :D :D [23:15] If you want to connect pulseaudio to jack, you'll need to install pulseaudio-module-jack. But, you might not want that if playing soft synths at low latencies [23:15] Also, get linux-lowlatency for any realtime processing - i.e. playing soft synths with a keyboard [23:16] linux-lowlatency is more or less exactly like linux-generic, but with a few configs done differently. A bit poorer throughput, maybe a bit harder on battery life, but a lot better for realtime audio stuff [23:18] I'll probably just be lining this out to speakers and putting my cardoid mics right up to em [23:18] reydempto: Oh, and if you ever do get problems with pulseaudio again, for whatever reason, you can always disable it. Even if just while you are doing other stuff. [23:18] The file /etc/pulse/client.conf, uncomment and change the line [23:18] ; autospawn = yes [23:18] AH [23:19] thats is what made it keep restarting immediately after i killed it huh? [23:19] Once you changed that config, you can kill pulse, and it won't autostart [23:19] Yep [23:19] oh man, that messed with me so hard today [23:19] zequence thank you so much for the assist, very awesome [23:20] reydempto: np. Have fun! [23:20] now to learn how to properly configure jack :P [23:21] I am installing linux-lowlatency now for the heck of it [23:55] Hey, back again :P Even though everything seems to be working fine, and I made a connection between bristol and the pulse bridge via qjackctl, i still get no sound output! However if I look at my pulseaudio settings, i can see the bridge's 'vu meters' jumping when i press a key in the synth. [23:55] I tested other things like vlc and youtube and nothig ngives audio, even though both pulse and jack seem to be sharing the video card fine [23:56] sound card * [23:57] so close
