sergio-br2it's gnome design right?00:24
gdi2kI have two Broadwell generation Thinkpads: X250 and T450s. I'm having nasty stability issues with the T450s. The X250 has been super stable and no trouble at all, but with the T450s, nothing really works properly. Even running the Xubuntu 14.04.3 Live CD results in Thunar immediately crashing. The installation constantly crashes, but at different points. If it does install, applications constantly crash, especially Libreoffice (which I depend on).03:23
gdi2kI have run memtest of hours and no errors show up03:23
gdi2kI have replace the SSD with a new SSD03:24
gdi2kI wiped Windows as soon as it arrived, so I can't say if it runs stable on Windows or not03:24
gdi2kI have tried Xubuntu 14.04 and 15.04, both have the same issues03:24
gdi2kany good ideas?03:24
gdi2kI have also tried using a variety of known good install media (different USB flash drives, and a regular external USB hard disk)03:26
ballAre Xubuntu ISO images bootable if I dump them onto a USB flash drive?03:32
finnits a live iso03:36
Unit193ball: If you dd them, you can't just drag and drop/cp them over.  Of course, you can if you use some loopback magic with grub.03:54
balldd is what I had in mind.04:05
ballThank you.04:06
nikolamthis is output of , pacmd list-sinks | grep name , http://pastebin.com/pDqU7Yg910:09
nikolamUser complains that it has displayed 'MONO' as sound output and he wants it in stereo10:10
nikolam00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)10:10
bazhang!hdaintel10:12
ubottuFor fixing your Intel HDA sound this page has useful information https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto10:12
nikolamI have found this for making it send both channels to MONO: http://superuser.com/questions/657876/mono-sound-output-in-ubuntu10:18
nikolambut user for some reason already has selected mono, he wants stereo10:18
nikolamI suspect it is some settings for local user10:19
nikolamfor example, headphones are selected for output, maybe that is the problem10:24
jarnosnikolam, for each sink input listed by pacmd list-sink-inputs you have to move sink to stereo sink by pacmd move-sink-input <input sink number> <stereo sink number>. A little bit complicated. I made a script for that in my configuration.10:52
jarnosI had some errors during shutdown; there was unattended upgrades. I got some text output during shutdown, but in which log I should search for it?10:55
well_laid_lawnI don't think shutdown is logged but you can check the logs for whatever made the noise10:56
=== Ofloo` is now known as Ofloo
jarnoswell_laid_lawn, Well, there are noise in many logs.11:23
well_laid_lawnjarnos:  only you know what "some text output" means11:25
jarnosThe output had some time offsets on each line11:25
well_laid_lawnsounds like kernel messages11:26
jarnosThere is nothing from that time in kern.log11:29
jarnosLogs for unattended upgrades show pretty good.11:32
well_laid_lawnif you know the time you could   grep -rn 'time' /var/log/11:32
well_laid_lawnif that fails I don't know where else you could look11:32
jarnosI wonder why dmesg is empty. And no spare dmesg log11:35
well_laid_lawnare there kernel.*.log's11:36
well_laid_lawn?11:36
jarnoswell_laid_lawn, no, just kern.log*11:38
jarnosThere are some errors in apport.log.111:39
jarnoshttp://pastebin.com/2t8SR5Vk11:40
jarnosConcerning /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/wrapper-1.011:41
well_laid_lawnI read that as saying something closed before something else but nothing will be done as the system is shutting down11:43
well_laid_lawnso I wouldn't worry about that11:43
jarnoswell_laid_lawn, similar lines repeat in older apport.log files.12:18
jarnosThough, I have not seen such output during shutdown before.12:19
well_laid_lawnjarnos:  so that's not the issue then12:20
well_laid_lawnmaybe recording the shutdown on your phone or something will gat the errors...12:20
jarnosWell, I would like to get rid of that error, too.12:23
jarnosI suppose it is something about the system load monitor plugin.12:25
well_laid_lawnyep, it might be fixed in newer versions. I dunno12:27
well_laid_lawnwhat version are you running ?12:28

Kotz3koch3rhi, does somebody know how to change font DPI on the fly (console)16:51
Kotz3koch3r'xrandr --dpi' did nothing :(16:51
GeekDudeI can't seem to resize GIMP when it's in single window mode. It just won't work; neither dragging, alt-right click, or maximize will work to resize the window.16:58
GeekDudeGoogle isn't being particularly helpful to me today. It keeps telling me how to resize an image, not the actual editor window itself.17:04
LuyinGeekDude: restarted your computer? I know it sounds silly, but might actually help. also, installed all package upgrades?19:01
GeekDudeLuyin: I did updates and rebooted earlier today19:11
LuyinGeekDude: hmm, was just an idea. sry :-/19:12
Luyinonly thing left that pops to my mind would be to reinstall gimp19:12
Luyinwhich gimp version, btw?19:13

knome!patience | daniele_20:33
ubottudaniele_: Don't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/20:33
Luyindaniele_: as a first try, run "sudo service NetworkManager restart"20:40
daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451256/20:46
Luyindamn, I must have got the name wrong again. it might be Network-Manager, network-manager, networkmanager or anything else you can imagine. sorry, can't check it since I'm not on a sysvinit based system ehre20:48

daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451358/20:55

daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451418/20:57
daniele_ops...20:58
daniele_i'm waiting for egrep -i 'net|eth|wlan|firm|reason'/var/log/syslog21:00
daniele_nothing again21:01
Luyinhmm, nothing useful so far. what device do you use to establish a wireless connection?21:02
daniele_an old usb "motorette" the sistem detected21:02

daniele_change?realtek is other and i have also the cd installation but i don't find the solution21:03
daniele_somebody say me that the problem is usb1...but nobody has explain to me what is it?21:04
LuyinI wouldn't know of anything that's wrong with your usb1, nor what it should have to do w/ your wlan21:05
Luyinunfortunately, I have no idea what's wrong with your wlan, either. I'm sorry, I don't think I can help you here.21:05
daniele_mhhh if i change the usb wireless?21:06
Luyindaniele_: you can try, sure21:06
daniele_and the same iter?21:06

daniele_egrep -i 'net|eth|wlan|firm|reason'/var/log/syslog nothing21:13
Luyindaniele_: ah, so your wlan device is a usb device?21:13
daniele_yes21:13
Luyindaniele_: ignore the egrep command. it seems it's outdated, or otherwise /var/log/syslog doesn't exist.21:13
daniele_ok21:13
daniele_I have the CD but can not install it21:15
Luyindaniele_: is SSID broadcasted by the router, or is it hidden?21:15
daniele_by the router i think21:16
Luyindaniele_: could you repeat your very first paste (http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14451010/ ) with "sudo" please?21:16
Luyindaniele_: you ought to make sure. if that's the source, we can fix it easily, and we won't have to look further ;)21:17
daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451672/21:18
daniele_ok21:20
daniele_yes,by the router21:22
Luyinok21:22
Luyindaniele, with sudo: "sudo lshw -C network" please21:23

daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451802/21:27
daniele_sorry,the telephone :/21:27
Luyinnp21:27
Luyindaniele_: did you see this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported ?21:28
Luyindaniele_: nevermind, obviously your vendor isn't supported (at least on this website)21:29
Luyinhttp://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man4/if_sis.4.html21:29
daniele_i don't know what can do21:31
Luyinwell, as I understand from the last link, you are supposed to either recompile your kernel with the sis driver enabled, or you can add it as a module to be loaded at boot time21:32
Luyinalthough I'm not 100 % sure about this. you might want to ask about this specifically in #ubuntu21:32
daniele_they say me "use eth" :)21:32
Luyinthat's a stupid answer21:33
Luyinanyway, you can try to follow the instructions about lloading the driver at boot time21:33
daniele_nobody want help me,all say the pc is very old, get-out it21:33
Luyinas I understand it, there ought to be a file in /etc called "loader.conf"21:33
Luyinadd the line if_sis_load="YES" to it, then reboot21:34
daniele_i have the cd into, but no permission gave me21:34
Luyindaniele_: what's your favourite editor? do you know how to use nano?21:34
daniele_ok,i open it with gedit?21:34
Luyindaniele_: for gedit, type "gksudo gedit /etc/loader.conf"21:35
daniele_nothing happen21:36
Luyinmeh21:36
Luyintry "sudo gedit /etc/loader.conf"21:36
daniele_non avevo gedit ^_^21:37
Luyindaniele_: let's try something different: "sudo modprobe sis"21:37
daniele_i haven't gedit,i install now it21:37
Luyinno21:38
daniele_it's late21:38
Luyinyou probably have mousepad or leafpad installed21:38
daniele_yes,mousepad21:38
Luyinalso, learn to use nano. or learn vim ;)21:38
Luyinthe replace the "gedit" with "mousepad"21:38
daniele_gedit is here now21:38
Luyinyou don't need anything else21:38
daniele_i try again?21:38
Luyinalso, could you please paste me "lsmod | grep sis"21:39
daniele_http://paste.ubuntu.com/14451989/21:40
Luyindaniele_: "sudo modprobe sis900"21:41
Luyinif that doesn't help, you might want to add "sudo modprobe i2c_sis96x"21:41
daniele_nothing21:41
daniele_but loader.conf i continue to compile it?21:42
Luyinafter both these, repeat the "service ... restart" from above, I dunno whichever it was that actually did something ;)21:42
Luyindaniele_: no, ignore that loader.conf crap21:42
Luyinsorry about that. dunno what that's about, but it's rubbish.21:42
daniele_:) ok21:42
daniele_ok,restart the service http://paste.ubuntu.com/14452047/21:44
Luyinso, do you see a wireless network now on your networkmanager applet?21:45
daniele_no21:45
Luyinshoot21:46
Luyindaniele_: I'm sorry, but I'm out of ideas now.21:46
daniele_in a first moment i did put d-link usb and wi fi worked, but the system  got stuck21:47
Luyindaniele_: I'd try #ubuntu again, tell them what we've tried so far. ignore the fartbags telling you to use a different computer, just hang around and hope somebody who's both decent and more knowing than me comes up with an idea21:47
daniele_thank21:47
