codelionsweet, updating fstab did the trick00:08
Extreminadoris it possible to turn off the password protection off for a session or for 1 hour or something?00:09
codelionthanks Jordan_U00:09
codelioncan't believe I didn't think to update fstab /facepalm/00:09
daftykinsi figured GRUB wasn't even installed :)00:10
daftykinsExtreminador: why? you can just switch with 'sudo -i'00:10
codelionIt was getting past grub, then sitting at a flashing underbar00:10
daftykinsah ok00:10
Extreminadorreaaly ty00:11
codelionwhich I suppose I should have recognized as a bad fstab, since I've seen it before00:11
Extreminadordid not know about it00:11
codelionsometimes I forget how to computer00:11
Extreminadordaftykins you sure... ?00:12
daftykinssure about what00:12
Extreminadordid made sudo -i and it just changed the root user prefix00:12
codelionugh, pulled my old drive and now I get a grub rescue menu00:12
daftykinsyeah i figured you wanted to perform multiple tasks without sudo auth dropping, Extreminador00:12
daftykinsyou may need to rephrase if not00:13
Extreminadorwell that is handy indeed as well00:13
Extreminadori have password protction on and evrey 2 minutos (the time i placed) it's asking for the password00:13
sebastian_hi all somewone has some knowlage in the ipv6 + ipv4 name resoluion aka getaddrinfo ?00:14
Extreminadorwould like to tunr that off temporary just for this session or for 1 hours or something00:14
daftykinswhat kind of password protection...00:14
Extreminadordesktop password protection when nothing happend's00:15
Extreminadornot sure the correct name of this00:15
daftykinssorry i don't understand at all00:15
I-Am-Grootgordonjcp,00:15
tomreynhi sebastian_. what's your actual question?00:15
sebastian_tomreyn: getaddrinfo takes 20 seconds for every host that is accesable via ipv4 and ipv6. this also affects programs like sudo00:16
tomreynsebastian_: resolver issues?00:16
codelionSo I've booted into my SSD00:16
codelionbut if I pull the original drive, it drops to grub rescue on boot00:16
codelionhow do I remove the old grub entry00:16
sebastian_tomreyn: ive disabled my local resolver00:17
tomreynsebastian_: check whether your name server works fine, using dig00:17
I-Am-GrootOkay... So earlier i was suggested to do a fresh install of ubuntu in order to stop my system from Crashing. So i wiped my whole ubuntu partition and installed a 64bit version of Ubuntu 14.04.300:17
daftykinsExtreminador: screen lock maybe? like a screensaver?00:17
Extreminadordaftykins yess that00:17
sebastian_tomreyn: ipv6 lookup is fast00:17
sebastian_tomreyn: ipv4 also00:17
thompennapologies for the n00b question, but I am having frequent X crashes (screen locks up, mouse won't move, can't switch to a different virtual terminal). what logs should I look in to try to debug the issue?00:17
Extreminadori have that set for evre 2 min to go to the session menu and ask again for the password00:17
tomreynsebastian_: anything in dmesg?00:17
daftykinsExtreminador: err only idea i can think is changing it to never in display/power options00:17
sebastian_tomreyn: "host" is also fast00:17
Extreminadoryehh that what i thought ty00:18
I-Am-GrootBefore that, i was told to use the command "dpkg -l > installed.txt" to make a list of all my installed programs so that i can use "dpkg --set-selections < installed.txt" to reinstall them00:18
daftykinsthompenn: assuming the system is stable, i.e. memtest and CPU, i'd check the SMART info of your hard disk in case it's causing issues - or maybe graphics drivers could play a part - /var/log/Xorg.0.log would show X crash info to some extent00:18
sebastian_tomreyn: dmesg is silent00:18
I-Am-GrootBut when i enter "dpkg --set-selections < installed.txt", i get an error00:19
daftykinsI-Am-Groot: that should've been "dpkg --get-selections > file"00:19
daftykinsnot sure if that matters.00:19
daftykinssounds like it does00:19
I-Am-Grootdaftykins, Okay00:19
sebastian_tomreyn: I've a small demo pogram and getaddrinfo is hanging is libc -> make_request00:20
tomreynsebastian_: is the system time correct? is this a guest system in a virtualization environment?00:20
I-Am-GrootI get this error when i do the command dpkg: error: unexpected end of line in package name at line 100:20
sebastian_tomreyn: a laptop with correct time00:20
thompennI didn't notice anything that jumped out at me in Xorg.0.log but then I don't really know what I'm looking for00:20
daftykinsthompenn: it'd be very far down, you can pastebin the whole file.00:20
daftykinsthompenn: sudo apt install pastebinit && pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log00:21
sebastian_tomreyn: also wireshark showed yesterday, that the dns packets are sent and recieved quite fast00:21
I-Am-GrootIs there something i can do?00:21
tomreynsebastian_: has it always been this way? if not, what changed between the ok and the problem state?00:21
Bashing-omI-Am-Groot: That is hust a text file , open it in a text editor .. what does it look like .. particularly line 1's end .00:22
sebastian_tomreyn: the "ok" state was the kubuntu live cd00:22
thompennhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/14453801/00:22
tomreynsebastian_: and you had the same issues before and after that?00:22
tomreynsebastian_: i.e. whenever you run form the 'default' system, i guess?00:23
tomreynignore 'form'00:23
sebastian_tomreyn: this is a new laptop (acer aspire v 15 nitro) I've installed kubuntu yesterday. I have this problem since then00:23
daftykinsthompenn: nothing showing up there, probably because it hasn't happened this boot?00:23
thompenndaftykins: doesn't Xorg.0.log get overwritten each x session00:23
thompennyeah00:23
daftykinssorry i should've thought of that00:24
thompennI have one that I got from a 'recovery mode' root shell00:24
sebastian_tomreyn: I never started the installer cd since then00:24
tomreynsebastian_: which laptop, which ubuntu version?00:24
daftykinsthompenn: there's a Xorg.1.log too but that'd only be one run back00:24
AnthaasHi - wtf is folder.gt.tar.gz00:24
tomreynsebastian_: sorry you just said #100:24
AnthaasIve never seen the .gt before00:24
sebastian_tomreyn: 15.1000:24
I-Am-GrootBashing-om, I am trying to share the contents of the file via pastebin, but they are telling me i have exceeded the file limit00:24
daftykinsAnthaas: inappropriate language for the channel. looks like just a name is all. run "file" against it.00:25
sebastian_tomreyn: 15.10 is too old for my nvidia graphics card and my wifi card, but that is not my main issue00:25
tomreynsebastian_: check syslog for issues during boot, try a bios update00:25
Anthaasdaftykins, sorry, I didnt realise initialisms like that weren't allowed. Most places with language rules allow them. Sorry.00:25
I-Am-GrootBashing-om, I am installing pastebinit..hold on00:25
sebastian_tomreyn: bios update for a dns resolving issue? wired.00:25
daftykinsAnthaas: np00:26
Bashing-omI-Am-Groot: Pastebin is good choice, there is also <command> | nc termbin.com 9999 .00:26
daftykinstomreyn: yeah that's a stretch... BIOS updates are not without risk00:26
tomreynsebastian_: bios update for a laptop which has new hardware which you say 15.10 doesn't work well with, yet, since not new enough00:26
sebastian_tomreyn: the syslog is full of errors from my ath10k: failed to enable dynamic BW: -1100:26
akiksebastian_: can you run strace on the process when it's having the 20 second timeout? is it only getaddrinfo you see00:26
sebastian_akik: yep00:27
Anthaasdaftykins, Wasn't aware of "file". You are right, just a name. Guess you can't trust people to follow even simple instructions haha.00:27

sebastian_akik: ah strace, let me chek00:27
daftykinsAnthaas: sadly nope :( every time i write guides for people they get ignored00:27
thompenndaftykins: this log mentions the power button at the end, which is how I have to restart.. http://paste.ubuntu.com/14453816/00:28
sebastian_akik: strace is silent, no call is taking so long00:29
codelionif you have kgdb or kernel tracepoints installed, that might let you know why the syscall is taking so long00:29
sebastian_akik: but ltrace shows a 20 sec delay in getaddrinfo00:29
daftykinsthompenn: nope nothing useful either ; does this system use a mechanical HDD?00:30

sebastian_akik: i guess that I can "fix" that by disabling ipv6 but I don't like that00:50

mikubuntuthis page won't let me escape, has audio to go along with it warning me to call the microsoft technicians http://ibin.co/2SuGjU9WckuA01:43
mikubuntui've never in my life had this problem on ubuntu (or any linux) :: heres the dialog box: http://ibin.co/2SuHlnnktDfO i had to shut the computer down and switch from chrome to chromium to get away from it. running lubuntu 14.04.01:43
daftykinskillall chrome01:44
daftykinsmikubuntu: so is this even relevant anymore if you've avoided it?01:44
daftykinslike, what are you asking? :)01:44
chef`mikbuntu: if it keeps popping up, purge and reinstall the browsers, you might also run bleachbit to clean out anything left behind and also run a sophos antivirus scan, its free01:44
mikubuntudaftykins: problem is when i restart it, my settings are for chrome to go back to my last tabs open01:45
daftykinsmikubuntu: move the profile folder / create a new profile01:45
daftykinsor ask the chrome folks how to chop out that action01:45
mikubuntudaftykins: is there a chrome channel -- never thought of it01:46

mikubuntudaftykins: hopefully someone in chrome has a clue what to do01:48
jaxagHello! I am using Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity and am having a peculiar issue with switching between keyboard layouts ("input sources"). Does anybody here understand how the "text entry" settings and/or keyboard indicator work behind the scenes?01:48
daftykinsmikubuntu: well i already said what'd work, so it only depends if you want to recover some bookmarks01:48
mikubuntudaftykins: funny because usually chrome will warn of dangerous sites before it01:48
mikubuntudaftykins: sry, sounded a lil over my head01:49
chef`you should install bitdefender traffic light01:49
chef`its an add-on in chrome and firefox01:49
mikubuntuchef`: thx i'll check it out01:49
daftykinsmikubuntu: that's fine, but you have to shout :)01:50
mikubuntuit's a very 'windows' kind of problem thought i left all that behind in 7.04 :P01:50
daftykinsanything browser is a problem no matter what OS you are on01:51
OerHeksclose browser, clear the browsercache and plugins and you are fine01:51
daftykinsOerHeks: apparently chromium is restoring the last session tabs from chrome on launch - if i understand mikubuntu right?01:52
daftykinsugh google results are a mess for chromium01:52
mikubuntuOerHeks: no, i'm on chromium and it's fine -- except as you noted, it doesn't have all my preferences set01:52
mikubuntuso i want to be able to use chrome01:53
mikubuntuused to like firefox, but rather ambivalent about it anymore01:53
daftykinsmikubuntu: do you need any data from "chrome" 's profile, or can you nuke it and start afresh?01:53
daftykinsmikubuntu: the profile is in /home/username/.config/google-chrome apparently - so you can murder it there (or just move it out of that folder to hide it)01:54
daftykinsthen the browser will run as if clean installed01:54
mikubuntudaftykins: u mean just uninstall? guess i'm not sure if it will resync all my settings on reinstall.01:54
daftykinsno i mean the profile is a folder in the above path01:55
daftykinsi've been trying to get at whether you want any data from chrome with my above questions01:55
mikubuntudaftykins: just my settings and bookmarks, no 'data' there besides that01:56
daftykinsmikubuntu: yeah i don't know off hand if you can pull that out of the profile - so the folks in the channel may be of help, but if you have just the one computer i would probably create a new user account, switch to it, run chrome and log in with your account (if you were using sync) then see if everything you want comes back01:58
daftykinsthen you will know if you can nuke the profile instead01:58
mikubuntudaftykins: dOH! ok, i signed in to chromium and it seems to have sync-ed everything except my last open tabs -- perfect.02:01

jaxagOK, maybe we can try this: I want to understand what happens behind the scenes when I choose a keyboard layout through the indicator in the status line. I think I have the necessary programming skills, but no experience whatsoever with OS/Ubuntu code. Can anybody please direct me to the source code of indicator-keyboard?02:10
jsohthanks, that did the trick.02:11
g3kyjaxag, Have you been here? http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/wily/indicator-keyboard/wily/files02:12
jaxagThanks, g3ky! I'll try and delve into it right now!02:14
jaxag(If anyone feels like lending a hand... :-) )02:15
jaxagSpecifically, I'm looking for the action that takes place when a specific layout is chosen - the mechanism which causes the actual layout switch (presumably using setxkbmap? Or perhaps not?).02:19
g3kyjaxag, Probably calling localectl.02:19
jaxagg3ky: You think it's localectl? I thought localectl controls the _default_ keyboard layout.02:22
OerHeksSUPER + space, see the indicator-keyboard menu > text entry settings02:22
jaxagWhereas I'm interested in what happens when the user tries to change the current keyboard layout.02:23
jaxagOerHeks: I'm looking for what happens behind the scenes when the user super+space's.02:24
daftykinsjaxag: fwiw i think your query might get a more just response from an askubuntu or ubuntu forums post - if you intend for it to be specific to unity on ubuntu02:24
jaxagThanks, daftykins. I've tried askubuntu recently with a similar (albeit different) issue, and was disappointed by the lack of views, let alone answer... :-( I was hoping here I could find someone who knows something about it.02:25
jaxagAlso, I'm not familiar with environments other than Unity, but I'm not sure my issue is Unity-specific.02:26
jaxag(Is the indicator-keyboard Unity-specific? I would assume it's not.)02:27
daftykinsjaxag: mmm not at this time really, if relevant to your interest then it might be worth going up the chain channels wise, to say #debian or even #linux02:27
jaxagOK, daftykins - thanks for the tip!02:28
daftykinsnp :)02:28
jaxagdaftykins: I think my topic, while not Unity-specific, is in fact Ubuntu-specific. For now I'll try and understand the indicator-keyboard code, and I'll try and come back if and when I have more specific questions.02:31

b1rdd0gcfhowlett> The first thing you said to me tonight was "!paste | birdd0g" And just now, you said "!fcm | birdd0g". Is that some type of IRC convention with the "bang"?04:21

SchrodingersScatb1rdd0g: it signals the bot, you can msg/query the bot to learn more, maybe try /msg ubottu !help04:22
cfhowlettb1rdd0g, the irc channel admins have written commonly called upon info bits (factoids).  to trigger a factoid, one types !factoidname and it will appear04:22
cfhowlettb1rdd0g, actually !factoidname |         is the proper protocol04:22
b1rdd0gAh! I knew it had to mean something!04:22
b1rdd0g!fcm |04:23

cfhowlettb1rdd0g, there is a lot of use info there.  to see for yourself discreetly, you should message the bot like this:    /msg ubottu !fcm                and you'll get a private message04:23

lotuspsychje!kernel | sebokie11:45
ubottusebokie: The core of Ubuntu is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, and if you need to troubleshoot issues, you can try a !Mainline kernel instead, but if you insist, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile (see also !Stages)11:45

lotuspsychjecuci: try a live and find out perhaps?12:13
Peanutlotuspsychje: Yes, I've seen that page. I've managed to manually install grub from the shell that's avaialble during installation. But that still means the installer thinks it failed to install grub, and the end-result is a machine that ends up in the grub rescue. j09wow, this is hard14:17
BluesKajyeah , ppas are chancy14:18
FlameReaperwell Krita's PPA is safe enough to add14:18

j09i shouldn't use the official keepassx because that's not being updated, but for some reason this third party one that isn't to do with the project is?14:18

j09i'm just surprised how long it takes for software to get into the ubuntu repos and why so much needs to be filled in with ppas14:31
BluesKajj09: that's the difference between stable and rolling releases14:32
j09BluesKaj yeah but when i say long. i'm talking years not months14:33
MonkeyDustj09  it takes so long, because the software is thoroughly screened and tested14:33

Muh2Hi, is there a way to run a javascript file by just typing its name on the terminal?15:27
MonkeyDustMuh2  javascript is an 'extension' to html15:27
MonkeyDustMuh2  javascript doesnt live on its own (java does)15:28
Muh2MonkeyDust: since there is Nodejs I was wondering whether I can do "myjavascript.js" instead of "nodejs myjavascript.js"15:28
Muh2meaning that the terminal should figure it out that nodejs is needed to run the javascript15:29
geirhaMuh2: yes, just set the shebang like any other script15:31
geirhaE.g. #!/usr/bin/env nodejs or #!/usr/bin/nodejs15:31
geirhaAnd drop the extension for commands15:31
Muh2geirha: thanks.15:32

Bashing-omBalmoraBro: The only kernel that is nexessay is the present booted kernel . noce to keep one other as a back up . to see what is booting " uname -r ' .22:19
BalmoraBrothat was just 3.19.0-39-generic22:19
BalmoraBroso I should just keep a 3.19.0-29 of all abi, config, initrd, System.map, and vmlinuz?22:20
Bashing-omBalmoraBro: Then you keep the -39 and -37 kernels . by "manual" you means with " apt-get OR dpkg " to remove the old kernels ?22:20
