Having a nightmare with one I bought last year and really don't want to repeat the same issues with a new one [13:15] what kind of laptop are you looking for, and what did you get last year? [13:16] Thanks Myrtti - I bought a Lenovo Yoga last year (intel pentium bay trail) and it's been truly awful with linux, i'm looking for something small and cheap, even something like a chrombook/cloudbook sort of thing. Since 15.10 seems to be showing a lot of problems with bay trail processors though and almost every small cheap notebook seems to have o [13:16] ne [13:16] so what's your budget? [13:17] both "hopeful" and "not past this number" estimates are helpful [13:17] cheap as possible, less than £300, only looking for a <13in screen [13:17] right [13:20] I personally don't look for laptops under 850, so I've no idea. Chromebooks were at one point possible to upgrade into using real Linux, but I haven't looked at that side since I got my 2014 Dell XPS13 [13:21] do you still have the yoga? [13:21] or am I asking the impossible here? I figured a chromebook should have excellent linux compatibility, obviously, but since 15.1 this bay trail bug worries me [13:21] any links to more info about the bay trail bug? [13:21] yeah still got it, but its not booting atm - boots fsck then hangs [13:23] there's a few on askubuntu where people with similar processors seem to be having the same problem - usually with acers, Im guessing its a bay trail thing but not 100% sure. The system randomly (no matter what applications are open) freezes completely - no mouse/keyboard response, can only be hard reset by holding power key. Sometimes happens after [13:23] 10 minutes, sometimes works fine for hour. Doesn't write anything to the syslog. [13:24] sometimes this is an ACPI thing [13:24] kernel options required at boot [13:24] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HP_Chromebook_14 [13:24] might be of interest [13:25] could be, had a catalogue of ACPI issues with it - one fix I've tried has been changing the grub settings but it developed another problem before I had chance to test it thoroughly (there's no way I can find to trigger the bug so just have to see if it happens) [13:25] RMJ, any BIOS updates? [13:26] not sure actually, probably worth checking that out if the thing ever boots [13:27] not the only issues i've had with it though - appalling wifi, no bluetooth, touchscreen works sporadically (not a huge loss) [13:27] touchpad issues etc etc etc [13:30] not ubuntu's fault, just v. frustrating [13:32] http://askubuntu.com/questions/690416/ubuntu-15-10-freeze-on-acer-e11-bay-trail-cpu [13:33] https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 [13:33] bugzilla.kernel.org bug 109051 in intel_idle "intel_idle.max_cstate=1 required on baytrail to prevent crashes" [Normal,New] [13:34] some info on there [13:34] excellent, the fix will work if it ever boots then :) [13:34] your mileage may vary [13:34] the comments are variable [13:35] at the moment it freezes on boot with an fsck readout so we will never know :P [13:41] thanks all for input [13:42] you can edit grub options :D [13:44] found a bios update (had to do it through windows though) [13:46] foobarry - added the line to grub config last night and it seemed to work (we will see). The not booting is a separate issue, no idea why its broken now [13:46] if you can upload a pic of the screen, it may enlighten a little [13:47] getting your laptop fixed is better than buying a new one :D [13:47] black screen reading "fsck from util-linux 2.26.2 /dev/sda9: clean....." then a load of numbers for files and blocks [13:49] after the ubuntu loading/splash screen, then nothing, it just hangs on the fsck screen [13:52] using RAID? [13:52] no [13:53] try booting an older kernel from grub? [13:53] tried that, didn't make a difference [13:54] nvidia card? [13:54] think its intel onboard [13:54] worth checking the settings in bios [13:55] tried to change display manager from lightdm to gdm, which is why i restarted, but can't imagine it making it do this [13:55] ctrl-C do anything? [13:55] or boot single mode [13:55] no, and doesn't seem to cancel the filesystem check either (maybe the window to press it in is really small?) [13:56] single mode? [13:56] add the word single to the end of the grub options [13:56] http://askubuntu.com/questions/132965/how-do-i-boot-into-single-user-mode-from-grub [14:01] one sec need to work out how to edit grub config [14:01] in recovery mode [14:04] k done [14:04] you get a prompt? [14:05] maybe try fsck of your disk or revert some changes you recently made [14:05] doesn't seem to be doing anything, just a purpleish screen [14:06] trying again, might have made a mistake [14:06] yeah got a prompt [14:07] emergency mode, sounds exciting [14:13] some progress anyway. thanks foobarry [14:16] no prob [14:16] ooh it just booted to a tty [14:17] having done a umount then fsck with 1 fix [14:22] ah so i can load a tty from the fsck but it won't load lightdm [14:26] sod it. reinstall. [15:20] anyone used mosh? [15:20] http://mosh.mit.edu [15:29] foobarry: I have [15:30] I tried, found it confusing and frustrating, and stopped [15:30] oh [15:31] didn't really confuse me, worked well with my android phone [15:31] Mixed reviews, I guess :) [15:31] oh bother, just remembered I need to cook [15:31] was ready for a nap [15:31] boo [15:31] user is requesting i install it [15:32] foobarry: I would, it's entirely optional and can't really do any harm to you [15:32] i need to open some ports [15:35] the security scares me a bit [15:35] changing IP addresses [15:35] roaming users === MooDoo is now known as Guest23862 [17:55] Bought a DisplayPort to HDMI cable, pavucontrol doesn't show any audio device. Any ideas? [17:56] ugh such adapting can be wonky even on Windows :P [17:56] computer only has displayport [17:57] (and VGA) [17:57] laptop or something? so miniDP? [17:57] it's a Dell PowerEdge [17:57] (home server type thing) [17:57] any links / model ? [17:57] back shortly [17:58] PowerEdge T20 === alan_g is now known as alan_g|EOD [18:10] Azelphur: any sign of your adapter being a 19 pin one? [18:10] daftykins, I should take it out and send you a photo? [18:10] nah i won't have a clue visually, just what the packaging might infer [18:11] don't have the packaging sadly [18:11] any text on the cable sheathing? [18:15] daftykins, just says "High speed cable" [18:15] is it a xeon in that thing? [18:15] yes [18:15] can you share a "grep -i model /proc/cpuinfo" ? just one line though naturally :> [18:16] model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1225 v3 @ 3.20GHz [18:16] hmm not quite the same model but - https://communities.intel.com/thread/48407?start=0&tstart=0 [18:16] "Engineering has said they will not be developing drivers to make this work." [18:17] i'm sure that's Windows talk, but still pretty damning [18:18] Azelphur, "pactl list" - what does that show (pastebin?) [18:19] popey, http://paste.ubuntu.com/14479595/ [18:19] ta [18:19] no hdmi, chances are the sound isn't wired up to the displayport? [18:19] popey, wired up? [18:19] or it's not getting told the device at the other end is capable [18:19] internally [18:20] oh, ie a motherboard issue [18:20] nah, it would show up whether plugged in or not [18:20] could be [18:20] e.g. my laptop shows up two of them, because it's in a docking station, one port on laptop, one port on docking station [18:20] despite only one being connected to a display [18:21] kinda a letdown [18:21] actually, maybe it wouldn't hurt to check if all 19 pins are there on the HDMI end [18:21] probably unlikely it isn't though! [18:21] http://paste.ubuntu.com/14479609/ [18:21] thats my laptop [18:21] Azelphur: how'd you obtain such a niche type of device o0 [18:22] Notice the alsa.mixer.name "Intel CougarPoint HDMI" [18:23] Azelphur, do you have a fairly standard kernel? So it would detect all the right devices? [18:32] Not surprising on that class of device. [18:32] yea indeed, not surprising [18:32] shame but not the end of the world [18:35] can always stick a usb sound card in if you need to [18:36] well it has 3.5mm out [18:37] http://www.amazon.co.uk/kwmobile-adapter-converter-stereo-conection/dp/B013V21KNO [18:38] get a thing like that, which lets you inject audio into the hdmi signal [18:38] At least I think that's what it does :D [18:40] popey, nice gadget [18:50] http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/12/microsofts_get_windows_10_nagware_is_showing_signs_of_sentience/ [18:54] daftykins: lol [18:54] yey for green goo [18:54] oh, it's grey? Go to Advanced options to fix this issue." [18:58] i needed to test a proper dedi-host setup [18:59] with SCVMM and all that mess :) [18:59] doing so seems to do nothing, tell me to reboot and then it's back in the same state again after the restart [18:59] oh yeah, that thing [18:59] maybe nuke your %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ ? :> [18:59] is that safe? [19:00] of course, 'tis the WU woes standard procedure [19:00] stop the WU service first though [19:01] WU otherwise works fine tho [19:01] ah well [19:02] seems it's a common problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/your-security-settings-need-attention-to-get/9b3f4512-9177-48dc-921b-a70da1b04193?auth=1 [19:09] ok, I think that might have fixed it - turn-off insider completely, then do the registry tweek from that link, and finally enable insider again and reboob [19:09] nope, that didn't work [19:11] oh, maybe it did [19:12] it's fixed now after running their "fix me" a second time - so the steps above, then when it moans after the reboob do their automatic fix and then follow the prompt to reboob again and THEN it's fixed...maybe [19:13] and now it's offering me a pukka insider build for install \o/ [19:13] 11082 === MooDoo is now known as Guest97954 === Lcawte|Away is now known as Lcawte === Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away
