FritigernKFOntview seems to be broken on my machine. Is this a known problem? What happens is that the window appears to have no font preview in it, save for a smidge on the right hand side of the window. Is there something that I can do to fix this on my machine?06:35
FritigernAlso, the font thumbnailer in Dolphin does not seem to want to work for me, the thumbnails, although all of different dimensions. are all black and I have a feeling that one thing is related to the other06:36

Fritigernvalorie: You may have some fonts in ~/.fonts. Or try the systemwide installed ones in /usr/share/fonts but the problem is not the fonts, because they work and they are fine. It's the kfontviewer as well as dolphin's font thumbnailer that won't work for me.07:10

sgo11hi, I am running kubuntu 14.04 (actually lubuntu installs kubuntu-desktop package). Text input fields (box) are gray color. Actually, I can not determine if a field is editable or not. This happens to many apps such libreoffice. How can I solve such problem? thanks.08:07
sgo11ps: running kde. (otherwise, i won't ask here.)08:08
sgo11This is a libreoffice screen capture: http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=9818408:10
sgo11I am using hexchat for IRC client. hexchat does NOT have this problem.08:11
sgo11Actually, I can not determine if that is a input field. you can see this from the screen capture. Without trying to click the mouse button in the gray field, I won't know there is a input field.08:13
acher88sgoll: just in libreoffice? not in any other kde based application?08:19
valoriesgo11: there is a plasma-gtk thing you probably need to set, in systemsettings I think08:36
valoriehmm, not finding it immediately08:36
sgo11valorie, I don't find it anywhere. I am running 14.04. I can only find GTK option.08:37
sgo11valorie, and it sets to oxygen-gtk theme.08:37
valorieok, that's what I was thinking of08:37
valorie!info plasma-desktop vivid08:38

sgo11acher88, sorry about the late reply. my hexchat does not remind me a new message except somebody mentions my name. it happens in many apps, but not all. I can not determine if the problematic apps are gtk or not. at least hexchat is OK. I don't think hexchat is using qt.08:38
acher882 ways of theming libreoffice08:38
valorieyou might try installing that, sgo1108:38
sgo11valorie, thanks a lot. am I not running plasma-desktop? I thought kde was using plasma-desktop by default.08:39
acher88package libreoffice-kde which provides a native VCL pluging to render LO in qt/kde theme08:39
valorieit doesn't hurt to try08:39
sgo11acher88, that will only solve my libreoffice problem. but many apps got that issue.08:39
acher88or libreoffice-gtk package which uses GTK to do the same, and then use oxygen gtk theme08:40
sgo11valorie, I just tried to install it, it shows me I have that package already.08:40
sgo11valorie, does it mean I am running plasma-desktop already?08:40
valorieyes08:40
sgo11valorie, how to determine if I am running plasma-desktop or not?08:41
acher88is it other kde apps affected?08:41
valorieif you have it, you are running it08:41
acher88or gtk ones using the oxygen-gtk theme?08:41
valorieor you can press control + escape and see what processes are running08:41
sgo11acher88, I tried this command "sudo apt-get install libreoffice-kde". it told me I had this package already.08:42
acher88so looks like libreoffice is using their kde VCL then08:42
acher88and other native kde apps show the same blank/invisible input fields?08:43
sgo11I just switched to kde one day ago. I remembered this problem happened in other apps. but I can't recall what they are now. let me try.08:43
sgo11acher88, let me try some other apps...08:44
=== Fritigern_AFK is now known as Fritigern
acher88gotta go in a sec, but if you can say whether it happens in pure kde/qt apps, then that will narrow the problem down08:45
acher88libreoffice is NOT native kde and uses a plugin to render it's interface in kde/qt08:46
Fritigernvalorie: Do you have any suggestions as for as my issues go? (kfontview and font thumbs not playing nice)08:46
valorieI don't, since it's working for me08:47
sgo11acher88, ok. thanks. I am trying some apps now. so far, I haven't found the same problem. but I remembered it happened in other apps yesterday. I just switched to kde yesterday.08:47
FritigernWell poop. I had hoped you had some suggestions that I could try.08:47
valorieFritigern: if it's any comfort, I've heard a few others report the same thing08:50
valoriebut it seems to be really spotty08:50
FritigernAt least I know I am not the only one :-)08:50
valorieI suggest searching bugs.kde.org and chiming in08:50
valorieor filing a new bug if you don't find one08:51
Fritigernvalorie: I never though about googling for the issue. I just did and found that the bug has been reported at least a few times. It appears to happen in many different distros, and not only debian-based ones.08:54
valorieyour information will be valuable08:54
FritigernLooking through the bug reports, I don;lt think I can add anything that has not already been reported.08:56
valoriedetails of your own system?08:57
sgo11sorry, so far I can only find this problem in libreoffice. I remembered I saw it in other apps yesterday. but I can not find what I tried.08:59
valoriesgo11: details are important08:59
valorietake notes next time09:00
sgo11valorie, ok. thanks. what about my current libreoffice problem? just leave with it?09:00
valorieI'm not sure09:00
valoriebut then I'm not a fount of wisdom or experience09:00
Fritigernvalorie: According to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336089 people initially thought it was related to NVidia's propriatry drivers, but it also happened with Nouveau drivers. Then someone reported the same issue, only they had an AMD card. And then people started arguing, I kid you not.09:04
ubottuKDE bug 336089 in kcm_fontinst "Font preview - rendering problem" [Normal,Resolved: fixed]09:04
sgo11valorie, ok. there is another font problem. the fonts look weird in some apps. for example, with alt+f2, the run dialog displays and fonts displays very weird. in the beginning, there are even missing letters. I tried to enable anti-aliasing. after that, missing letters problem does not happen again. I am not sure if that does something or not. because this issue happens randomly. fonts still look weird in alt+f2 and letters overlaps with each other now.09:04
valoriedid you say you were running 14.04, sgo11?09:04
valorieI've not seen stuff like this for a very long time09:05
sgo11valorie, yeah, I am running 14.04 LTS.09:05
acher88can't test on 14.04 just this sec, but in debian jessie, which 14.04 is derived from, I get: http://i.imgur.com/Gfvt3Sj.png09:07
sgo11acher88, ok. yours look fine. :)09:09
acher88one less than ideal option would be to remove libreoffice-kde package and install libreoffice-gtk instead09:09
acher88that would make libreoffice use whatever gtk theme you have set09:09
acher88but native kde libreoffice plugin SHOULD work really09:10
acher88or if you have both the gtk and kde plugins installed you can set the environment variable 'SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk' to make libreoffice use gtk instead09:12
sgo11this is what alt+f2 fonts look like now: http://i.imgur.com/bbj2UtC.png?1  letters overlap with each other. Before enabling anti-aliasing, I even meet missing letters problem.09:12
acher88sadly I don't have a physical machine running 14.04 any more to test09:13
Fritigernvalorie: I think I just need to be a bit patient. At the end of that bug report, people started flinging code around with the end result being that the bug recieved a "fixed" status for plasma 5.5.409:13
acher88sgoll: really gotta go. hope you work something out09:14
sgo11acher88, ok. thanks a lot for your help.09:17

EriC^^then press ctrl+x to boot13:36
tetsuo2501ah ok!13:37

EriC^^"However, a big problem is that GRUB in fact is not able to recognize just about any filesystem. GRUB last stable release (2.0.2beta) is from 2 years ago, and this is the version that most distributions ship. So, while XFS, for example, was supported back in the time of the release, this filesystem has evolved* in the meantime but GRUB did not follow with a new release. Meaning that GRUB cannot boot from a boot partition that is XFS formatted. The same goes for14:49

bob2021hi.  i just converted ubuntu to kubuntu.  the little startup menu area, where you pick applications, got too small after i tried adding a widget.  how do i make the widget its default size again?18:33
BluesKajbob2021, kmenu>computer>system settings>icons>advanced tab> size18:36
bob2021blueskaj: is kmenu the thing in the lower left corner?18:37
BluesKajbob2021, yes18:37
BluesKajbob2021, also click on the 3dash stack on the far rioght of the panel and increase the height of the panel slightly18:39
bob2021blueskaj: right.  so, that's the thing that's too small.  when i click on it, a thing pops up and it has three parts at the top is user info.  at the bottom are some category icons. and the middle is where you pick what you want.  in my case, that middle part is about 2 pixels high, so i can't select or click on anything.  that's the problem i'm trying to solve.18:39
BluesKajthat will enlarge the icons as well18:39
bob2021when you say "thirdish stack on the far right," can you clarify what you're referring to?18:40
BluesKaj3 dashes stack18:41
bob2021i don't have that18:42
BluesKajsome call it a hamburger18:42
BluesKajthink you;re referring to earlier what 's called the context menu or dialog18:42
bob2021i have a 3dash stack on the upper left corner of each monitor, is that what you mean?18:43
bob2021and one on the lower right of the main monitor18:43
bob2021but not on the panel18:44
BluesKajI'm referring to the panel at the bottom of the desktop on the far right18:44
BluesKajwhere you choose the widgets18:45
bob2021where do i choose the widgets?18:45
BluesKajor right click on the desktop , choose widgets18:46
bob2021ok i made the panel at the bottom taller.  it had no effect on the application launcher panel size18:46
BluesKajadd widgets18:46
bob2021ok the left add widgets panel pops up for a moment, what do i do then?18:48
BluesKajbob2021, we don't all use multimonitor setups so whatever monitor has the panel with the Kmenu launcher is the one I'm referring to18:48
bob2021blueskaj right, i found the add widgets panel18:48
BluesKajthe default panel is on the bottom of the desktop with taskmanager digital clock, system tray etc. reszing the height of that panel will also increase the size any icons in it18:51
bob2021blueskaj : i think maybe i'm losing something in translation.  the problem isn't the size of individual icons.  its the size of the application launcher panel itself.18:54
bob2021it has the three parts, top, middle, bottom. the middle window area is very short, and thats where i'd actually pick something, but i can't see any because the window is too short18:54
BluesKajbob2021, try a screenshot with prtscn key and post it on imgur19:01
bob2021blueskaj: i don't have a printscreen button, i have an apple keyboard, how do i make a screenshot on this OS?19:02

BluesKajbob2021, pass you cursor over the top edge of the window til you get a <--> and draw the edge up to make the window larger/tqller19:07
BluesKajtaller19:07
bob2021blueskaj i don't get that <--> though, and the panel opens at the top of the screen instead of the lower left19:08
BluesKajbob2021, do you still have unity available, because the desktop still has the top panel, kubuntu doesn't have one19:11
bob2021blueskaj i guess, but then i think that would require killing a runnin compute process in R.  isn't there another way?19:12
BluesKajbob2021, I don't know, sorry19:13
bob2021meh... can you suggest a system monitor like conky that will show GPU usage?19:16
BluesKajhtop in the terminal or ksysguard gui19:17
BluesKajoh GPU oops19:18
bob2021yah that's the trick19:18
BluesKajconky itself works19:22
bob2021yeah but it was really ugly and it prevented a wallpaper from appearing19:24
bob2021now that whole monitor looks weird19:24
bob2021how about this - how can i make the application launcher start at the bottom of the screen instead of the top?19:24
BluesKajbob2021, this is my desktop the default panel is athe bottom where it appears after installing kubuntu http://imagebin.ca/v/2UhvF6kNKnp219:42
bob2021blueskaj but wht i mean by "application launch" is the thing that pops up when you press the K button19:45
bob2021the k menu19:45
bob2021or whatever19:45
BluesKajyes , that's why I mentioned passing the cursor over the top edge and clicking and drawing the window upwards to increase it's size19:47
BluesKajbob2021, it used to work on 15.10 , but now that I'm testing 16.04 plasma no longer allows it, but the window almost reaches to the top of the scrteen here19:50
bob2021blueskaj: I figured it out.  it was misreading theheight of my monitor19:53
bob2021next question... why isn't chrome showing up?19:53
BluesKajok19:53
BluesKajdid you install the deb ?19:54
bob2021blueskaj yes19:54
BluesKajtry kmenu apps>internet19:55
bob2021nope19:56
BluesKajbob2021, the deb has it's own installer, try it clicking the deb in your downloads folder19:57
BluesKajchrome or chromium?, they are different19:58
BluesKajI prefer chrome due to its up to date embedded flash19:58
BluesKajaltho FF is my default19:59
