Guest23934be back. Thank you all00:00
TJ-Guest23934: MCEs can be caused by overheating00:01
TJ-Guest23934: if you start the installer in "Try ubuntu" mode, and as soon as you have the desktop open a terminal and do "sudo apt-get install mcelog" you might be set-up to capture the MCE info before the installer triggers it00:02
happyfr0ggHow do I use aptly to fix the problem of ClipGrab failing to install?00:04

UZUMAKIHi00:10
mrkiehas someone tried to mount his ubuntu partition in windows? cause i use windows 1000:10
mrkieExt2Mount / Ext2Fsd does somebody know that?00:10
TJ-mrkie: Windows doesn't have drivers for Linux files-systems, LVM, etc.00:10
faxnso i install the pm-utils however it doesnt seem to get triggered when i open and close my lid. There is nothing in the /var/log/pm-utils.log00:10
mrkiethat's why this softwae comes00:11
faxnI mean pm-suspen.log00:11
TJ-mrkie: how is Ubuntu installed? partition -> file-system, or partition -> LVM -> file-system ?00:11
TJ-faxn: you added ane exectuable shell script under /etc/pm/sleep.d/  ?00:12
UZUMAKIAnyone recommend me a distro for a live usb with persistence?00:12
mrkieTJ-: ubuntu has been installed next to windows, it has a ext4 filesystem00:12
faxnYa i did this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/546776/touchpad-not-working-after-suspending-laptop-14-10/57973900:12
k1l_UZUMAKI: "ubuntu" since you ask in #ubuntu :)00:13
TJ-mrkie: well, it's up to whatever 3rd party EXT* file-system driver you've installed on Windows00:13
faxnonly i change it from hid_multitouch to i2c_designware_platform since thats the mod it uses00:13
UZUMAKIIs too big for my usb00:14
UZUMAKIIs only 4gb00:14
TJ-faxn: Good; did you edit it to have the name of the kernel module you are having problems with?00:14
penne12hey00:15
penne12Im having a problem trying to ssh into my server00:15
brendanrME TOOO00:15
brendanrZOMFG00:15
mrkieTJ-: http://www.ext2fsd.com/ is a very good way, but that program i tried will after run go away00:15
penne12I also cant ping my local ip00:15
penne12from my server00:15
TJ-mrkie: I've no idea; I don't use Windows00:15
mrkieTJ-: would i need Ext2Fsd 0.62?00:15
brendanrpenne12: Ec2?00:15
penne12digital ocean00:16
squintyhappyfr0gg,  if you downloaded clipgrab from the clipgrab site, then just click on the filename to open it with your archive manager.  once the archive manager has opened, highlight the clipgrab folder and drag it to another directory (folder).  inside the clipgrab folder is one file, which you can just click on to get it to run.  you may have to make it executable by right clicking on the file name and then selecting Properties -> Pe00:16
squintyrmissions -> Execute00:16
mcphailfaxn: I don't think pm-utils are used any more. systemd has taken over00:16
mcphailfaxn: at least, on 15.1000:16
happyfr0ggsquinty - thanks.00:17
TJ-mcphail: it is used00:17
squintyhappyfr0gg, yw00:17
penne12when I try to ping it, it responds with nothing00:17
brendanrLet me try my box00:17
faxn_@TJ yes00:17
k1l_penne12: is the ip correct? is the server running? did you ask the hoster?00:17
penne12yeah.00:17
penne12Im connected via their online dashboard00:18
penne12so i cant ping myself, but I can ping the server00:18
brendanrI can still ping localhost on my ec2 instance00:18
penne12brendanr, Im on digital ocean00:18
TJ-faxn_: try suspending from the terminal to begin with: "sudo pm-suspend "00:18
brendanrbut publickey on it has compltely stopped working for one user account00:18
penne12also, Im trying to ping my home's ip00:18
TJ-faxn_: when using the GUI the session tools sometimes don't call the tools correctly00:18
penne12I can do it from a different droplet, but not this one.00:19
mcphailTJ-: you sure? My scripts aren't called any more, and there is a tranche of systemd documentation on suspend/resume. My searching suggests the GUI now uses systemd instead of pm-utils00:19
TJ-mcphail: well "apt-cache rdepends pm-utils" -> systemd-shim which is a task of all *-desktop00:20
brendanrpenne12: I was able to connect to a newly created user, but not my existing one00:20
penne12?00:21
faxn_the other way I waas thinking about fixing it is by making an alias on the keybaord. As there is a key on the keyboard thats supposed to enable and disable the tracpad and it doesnt work. I used evTEST and it sees the MSC_SCAN but doesnt label the key.. any ideas on how to debug that?00:21
=== Monthrect is now known as Piper-Off
Jordan_UTJ-: Are you running apt-cache rdepends from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that still uses upstart?00:21
penne12wait - brendanr, I think we have different problems - Im on digital ocean, also, I dont see anything when I try to ssh00:22
TJ-mcphail: maybe the package-maintainers have dropped the ball and not included a shim for pm-utils, despite it depending on systemd-shim00:23
TJ-Jordan_U: no00:23
faxn_evtest sees it as /dev/input/event3  and shows " type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN),00:23
mcphailTJ-: certainly, my scripts don't get called any more00:23
k1l_penne12: what did you do before that issue came up?00:23
penne12not sure, Ive had it for a while, but I havent cared enough to do anything about it, until now00:24
TJ-mcphail: that does sound like the shim definition is missing00:24
mcphailTJ-: interesting. I thought it was by design rather than by omission. I'd assumed pm-utils was being deprecated00:25
penne12hmmm thats also weird, I tried pinging myself, and it doesnt seem like im able to00:25
TJ-mcphail: maybe there's an alternative via pure systemd rules00:26
mcphailTJ-: there is. I'm trying to decipher them. http://askubuntu.com/questions/661715/make-a-script-start-after-suspend-in-ubuntu-15-04-systemd00:26
penne12k1l_ actually, I can ssh to a different server, also on digital ocean00:26
k1l_penne12: yes. but that other server doesnt help here, right?00:27
penne12 k1l_ not at all00:27
penne12but it shows that I can ssh to a server00:28
penne12on the same digital ocean region00:28
TJ-mcphail: faxn_ see "man 8 systemd-suspend.service"  and add a (modified) script to /lib/systemd/system-sleep/00:28
k1l_so restart the server in the webpanel? or reset it and start again from scratch00:28
mcphailTJ-: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/1455097 - looks as if systemd is going to be the only game in town00:29
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1455097 in pm-utils (Ubuntu) "pm-suspend no longer run since upgrade to vivid" [Medium,Confirmed]00:29
penne12I can access it from the webpanel, so I have shell acess00:29
k1l_penne12: then see your firewall settings and logs.00:29
penne12how?00:29
k1l_penne12: i dont know what you did there00:29
penne12k1l_ ?00:30
TJ-mcphail: : I guess the easiest fix for that is to add a call to pm-supsend from a script under /lib/systemd/system-sleep/ as a backward-compatible hack :)00:30
mcphailTJ-: ha!00:30
k1l_penne12: did you fiddle with the firewall there?00:30
mcphailTJ-: you are a genius00:30
penne12i did an iptables -F00:31
penne12when trying to fix it00:31
TJ-mcphail: at least, until all scripts are ported to systemd natively - makes me think the systemd-suspend service should be looking under /etc/systemd/suspend.f/ though, because on locked down systems there may not be write access to /lib/systemd/system-sleep/00:31
faxn_Alright thank I'll read through it, appreciate the info!00:31
penne12also, the app still woks00:31
penne12*works00:31
TJ-faxn_: you can put a script under /lib/systemd/system-sleep/ and it just needs to change that script slightly to match ${1} to "pre" or "post" and ${2} to "suspend"00:33
k1l_https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-list-and-delete-iptables-firewall-rules    penne1200:33
k1l_so is there a drop/deny rule now?00:33
penne12I dont think so00:34
penne12I flushed it while trying to resolve the problem00:35
faxn_so in the system-sleep is the ${1} grabbing the state?00:35
mcphailTJ-: /lib seems a particularly silly place to put it, although there was discussion about allowing /etc to be on a separate partition so I suppose it would need to go somewhere available at boot00:35
penne12Chain input policy accept00:35
penne12Chain forward policy accept00:36
penne12chain output policy accept00:36
penne12http://cl.ly/1q1O0P0I243f00:36
TJ-faxn_: mcphail something like this? http://paste.ubuntu.com/14656880/00:38
Wayward_VagabondNope, wifi decided it wants to act silly again00:38
mcphailTJ-: that looks promising. I'm going to pinch that and subvert it to my own ends ;)00:39
Wayward_VagabondAlso, I'm trying to use fallocate to make an 8gb file to use as swap, but it always returns "fallocate: swapfile: fallocate failed: Operation not supported"00:39
TJ-mcphail: if you can test/prove it, let faxn_ have any updates. I just threw that out00:40
Wayward_VagabondLooked at the manpage for it, and as far as I can tell, I'm using it right, even tried specifying directly in bytes instead of prefixes00:40
faxn_I liked that script where did you find that?00:40
TJ-faxn_: I just wrote it00:40
TJ-faxn_: it might need some polishing, I've not been able to test it00:41
mcphailTJ-: I'll have a look tomorrow when I'm not sleepy. I need to bring down/up bcache and don't want to hose my disk by a typo00:41
TJ-mcphail: same here; waiting for a kernel panic to capture a log :)00:41
mcphailha!00:41
faxn_so I can just edit lines 14, 19 to just include my i2c_designware_platform?00:41
penne12k1l_ there is no drop/deny rule - screenshot: http://cl.ly/1q1O0P0I243f00:41
TJ-faxn_: not even that. just list your module(s) in the variable on line 700:42
TJ-faxn_: as long as the names of the modules are separated by spaces, those for... loops will read each module-name and unload/reload them00:42
faxn_oh ok, that makes more sense00:43
faxn_alright let me try this00:43
TJ-faxn_: the script is more generic; so you can add other modules at-need without creating more scripts00:43
kirin_vHey, has anyone updated their 14.04 Unity lately and lost functionality? I used to be able to left click on an active application and it was like WIN+W but just for instances of that app. Anybody have that working in an up-to-date 14.04 install?00:44

TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: does the underlying file-system support it?00:54

penne12k1l_ ok00:55
penne12any ideas?00:55
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: what error code does it return?00:55
m15khappyfr0gg I think you need to remove the instaled ffmpeg package00:55
penne12wait, k1l_, do I need to save rules?00:55
Wayward_Vagabond'operation not supported'00:56
faxn_@smokeless I have an ideapad and I had some troubles with it too00:56
m15ksince your package does also provide ffmpeg binaries00:56
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: what command are you issuing, exactly?00:56
k1l_penne12: see the link i pasted. it explaines how to handle and clear the firewall properly00:56
faxn_Its likely that its not detecting it as a bootable USB00:56
Wayward_Vagabondfallocate -l 8G swapfile, from a terminal in / as root00:57
faxn_check you bios options and make sure that the USB shows up in the bootmenu, like "SanDISK Cruzer" you may have switch the boot mode or "boot priority" between UEFI and Legacy/BIOS00:58
penne12would changing the ssh port work?00:58
penne12k1l_00:58
happyfr0ggm15k - I like ffmpeg. I would hate to remove it just to satisfy ClipGrab.00:58
faxn_I used rufus and had to write my usb in DD mode, otherwise I was getting failures.00:58
faxn_Smokeless: I should add that if you end up using "DD image mode" with rufus, it will change the size of the usb detected by windows, in which case the program "gparted" is probably the best way to fix the usb afterword01:00
ChibaPetSo, I've not used hplip before. I've got it installed. I get this sort of thing: https://bpaste.net/show/c86504d6d2ba01:00
faxn_You egt that?01:00
=== step21 is now known as step21_
squintyhappyfr0gg, where did you get that deb from?   When I first saw your question I downloaded a file from http://clipgrab.org/ and then used the method I previously posted to you.  there is no need to install it....not here on this 14.04.3 anyways.  works great too01:00
atlas__If I want to download a package (say wine) source files, with 'apt-get source wine', modify a few things, then recompile and install it, is there a good guide to that somewhere?  I got the source, I modified it, I ran apt-get source --compile <package-name> after making my modifications -- but I"m not sure if this is compiling from the modified source or what01:01
penne12wait01:01
ChibaPetMy question: is it reasonable to use hplip as shipped by Ubuntu?01:01
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: this is the code fragment in the kernel module that returns the -EOPNOTSUPP, so you must be matching 1 or more of those conditions http://paste.ubuntu.com/14657129/01:01
penne12a second01:01
happyfr0ggsquinty - I got ClipGrab from its launchpad source.01:02
Wayward_VagabondHuh, it looks like it would work on ext4 but not ext301:02
Wayward_VagabondThanks01:02
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: the ext4 driver handles ext3 too, nowadays01:03
atlas__https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpdatingADeb is this what i'm looking for?01:03
xanguaChibaPet: what does hplip do?01:03
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: I did look for any indication it excluded ext3 but there was nothing obvious01:03
ChibaPetxangua: I'm not sure. I'm new to it.01:03
riqjrandom quiz: how old has Tina Turner turned?01:04

ChibaPetThe 'hp-doctor' command says, 'This distro (i.e ubuntu  14.04) is either deprecated or not yet supported.', which seems a bit odd.01:05
riqjxangua..hooray! I thought I wasnt heard01:05

penne12got it!01:05
penne12k1l_ - no idea how I did it, but I did! YAY!01:05
mcphailm15k: that is as user-hostile an error message as I've seen. But it looks as if btrfschk has been deprecated01:06
elmer_hi01:06
k1l_penne12: what was it? firewallrule still set?01:06
penne12no idea01:06
penne12didnt seem like it01:06

m15kmcpahil, any ideas what to do?01:07
penne12so that might be it01:07
k1l_penne12: :/01:07
mcphailm15k: no :( - have you followed the steps at https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Btrfsck ?01:07
happyfr0ggsquinty - I tried your approach. It works but Software Updater continues to ask to install it.01:08
mcphailm15k: there is also a #btrfs channel01:08
m15kmcphail, there's currently no activity - I check the page looks promising01:09
TJ-m15k: mcphail is there independent confirmation /dev/dm-0 does contain btrfs ?01:09
m15kTJ- /dev/mapper/* produces the same message which is my root partition01:10
TJ-m15k: OK, it's always worth being sure :)01:11
elmer_hi, i have a problem with transmission-daemon. Start the daemon, but i can't go in by the web interface; i have to restart the daemon...01:11
m15kTJ- I'm happy for every input :)01:11
squintyhappyfr0gg, is the ppa hassle worthwhile for a file less than 1 meg in size?  ;-)  Personally I would just periodically check for newer versions but others views may not match mine.  ;-)01:12
ChibaPetaha, found something that suggests reinstalling hplip and running hp-setup -i: http://askubuntu.com/questions/575547/how-can-i-install-hp-laserjet-p1102w-on-ubuntu01:12
mcphailm15k: looks as if btrfsck is now an alias to btrfs check, rather than the old binary. So no help there01:12
ChibaPetAh, and it's printing a test page. Woot.01:13
TJ-m15k: Ironic the btrsfs-tools package description includes the phrase "...while focusing on fault tolerance, repair..."01:13
ChibaPetNow I just need to see if CUPS can deal with it as configured.01:13
elmer__> hi, i have a problem with transmission-daemon. Start the daemon, but i can't go in by the web interface; i have to restart the daemon.01:14
ChibaPetWoot, and a CUPS test page joined the HPLIP test page. The world is saved.01:14
squintyhappyfr0gg,  fwiw, i just added the ppa and installed clipgrab without any errors.  probably your problem is related to the ffmpeg then01:16
happyfr0ggsquinty - yep, possibly so.01:17
squintyhappyfr0gg, conflict if you have it installed   "Requires ffmpeg. As Ubuntu 14.04 dropped ffmpeg, a symlink from /usr/bin/avconv to /usr/bin/ffmpeg will be created as a temporary workaround."01:17
mcphailm15k: does btrfs-find-root work on your device?01:19
squintyhappyfr0gg,  might want to try uninstalling ffmpeg, see if the ppa install goes ok and then reinstall ffmpeg if you still need it.  no guarantees though  lol01:20
m15kmcphail yes it does.01:21
happyfr0ggsquinty - whereis ffmpeg01:22
happyfr0ggffmpeg: /usr/bin/ffmpeg /usr/bin/X11/ffmpeg /usr/share/ffmpeg /usr/share/man/man1/ffmpeg.1.gz01:22
m15kmcphail the partition is also mountable via recovery option but only ro01:22
TJ-m15k: 2.5 years ago but the same error: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.file-systems.btrfs/2697801:23
squintyhappyfr0gg,  not on my system here.  you could just use synaptic to uninstall it ( or apt-get remove/purge) etc01:23
happyfr0ggI will just remove the ClipGrab package that was previously installed from Launchpad (apt-get) to save me the extra headaches.01:25
mcphailm15k: can you paste the output of that command?01:25
squintyhappyfr0gg,  :-)01:26
xanguahappyfr0gg: from Launchpad? Is this a PPA? What and why do you want to uninstall?01:26

transhuman_hi have a problem with open-vm-tools on kernel 4.2.0-25-generic its conflicting with  or preventing netfilter-persistent from starting anyone know of a fix01:27
happyfr0ggxangua - Yes to both your questions. ClipGrab because it is not installing via the terminal.01:28
Jordan_Um15k: Are you using the latest stable upstream linux kernel? Are you using the latest stable upstream btrfs-tools?01:28
mcphailm15k: hmm. That was more disappointing than I was expecting01:28
xanguahappyfr0gg: whay Ubuntu release, what repository did you add?01:30
m15kJordan U: I'm using latest 15.10server kernel. btrfs progs I'm unsure. I'm currently booted into 15.10 desktop iso for recovery.01:30
penne12k1l_ I figured out the problem01:30
penne12Cloudflare01:30
Jordan_Um15k: If you want to use btrfs then you should be keeping up to date with the latest upstream kernels, which Ubuntu does *not* do.01:30
Jordan_Um15k: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds01:31
happyfr0ggxangua - I am using Ubuntu 14.04 trusty. The repo I added was from https://launchpad.net/~clipgrab-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa01:31
mcphailJordan_U: not true. I used to kernel hop with btrfs, and upstream was broken more often than Ubuntu's kernel01:31
Jordan_Um15k: What happens when you try to boot into the system normally?01:31
sandahIf I install openssh-server on a 16.04 desktop system, but I still can't connect, could apparmor be a culprit?01:32
m15kJordan U it seems that btrfs crash entirely wait I'll paste dmesg output.01:33
sandahsystemd says it's listening and I can connect remotely, but not from outside.01:33
Jordan_Umcphail: "Due to the fast development speed, the state of development of the filesystem improves noticeably with every new Linux version, so it's recommended to run the most modern kernel possible." https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page which is indeed a less strong statement than I've heard from the btrfs developers before, but maybe things have changed recently.01:33
xanguahappyfr0gg: to remove that PPA and whatever it installed run: sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:clipgrab-team/ppa01:34
m15kJordan_U I think you're right. btrfs + mainline kernel might not be the best combination.01:34
Wayward_Vagabonddd worked to make a file for swap. Kinda.01:34
mcphailJordan_U: btrfs is "stable" now. You'll note on that page they mention the new developments break things for a while. I let the Arch Linux users deal with the breakage ;)01:35
Wayward_Vagabondthe numbers it's reporting don't make any sense though01:35
Wayward_Vagabond20:31 <+marvin> root@marvin-linux:/# dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1024 count=838860801:35
Wayward_Vagabond20:31 <+marvin> 8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 124.269 s, 69.1 MB/s01:35
mcphailm15k: I think the best way forward will be via the mailing list - https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Btrfs_mailing_list . I suspect they _will_ ask you to try an upstream kernel01:36
Wayward_VagabondI punched in for 8GB even. The number of bytes is claims is 7.72 GB. Both it, and thunar claim I have a 8.6GB file.01:37

TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: that patch is poor; in as much as, it is changing a lot of unrelated whitespace, which makes it very difficult to see which changes relate to the file_size_binary option, and which do not02:10
Jagst3r15any idea why I would get this via an sftp client? something messed up on ubuntu? Unable to extract public key from private key file: Wrong passphrase or invalid/unrecognized private key file format02:10
Wayward_VagabondIt's not like I'm gonna be looking at it once it's working? :s02:12
TJ-Wayward_Vagabond: I mean it'll be hard to apply it with all that messing with unrelated stuff02:13

On boot-up I can stop, and select the use the Ubuntu bootloader. I wish to get UEFI to select REFIND instead of Windows. What do I need to edit to do this?04:03
bjrohanAgain, ReFIND is already installed (I can see it in /efi/efi/refind04:03

PCatineanHello everyone, I seem to have a problem, my postfix server (I hope only it) got hacked and started sending spam like crazy07:06
neil_hi ... I am getting this error message when doing a "apt-get update" .... "W: Failed to fetch http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/wily/main/source/Sources  403  Forbidden [IP: 202.158.214.106 80]"07:06
PCatineanI've done sudo service postfix stop for now07:06
PCatineanCan someone please help me debug it and see what happened?07:07
PCatineanI need to take care of this until it spirals out of contro07:07
PCatineanl07:07

neil_cfhowlett, Description:Ubuntu 15.1007:08
PCatineancfhowlett, I have ubuntu server 14.04.02 LTS instaleld07:08
PCatineanOn the remote machine that got hacked07:08
cfhowlettneil_, could be that the mirror is temporarily out of order.  try a different mirro07:08
Ben64PCatinean: if your server is compromised, time to format and reinstall07:09
cfhowlettPCatinean, I suggest you bring this to #ubuntu-server for more informed advice07:09
neil_cfhowlett, ok ... thanks07:09
cfhowlettcertainly more informed than I can deliver07:09
PCatineanBen64, how do I know if it's the server that has been compromised or just the postfix?07:09
neil_PCatinean, do you know how they got in?07:09
PCatineanNot so far neil_ no07:10
Ben64PCatinean: theres really no way to be sure what is affected07:10
cfhowlettPCatinean, I think the point is if you  were breached, you should assume that your entire system is now vulnerable thus -- reinstall07:10
neil_PCatinean, do you have a ssh connection to the server?07:10
Ben64PCatinean: as long as you didn't do something silly like leaving an open mail relay07:10
cicles07:11
jr_Hey guys. I went to sound settings and suddenly my sound has just stopped working...I tried various "solutions" online but nothing has worked07:11
PCatineanneil_, yes I do that's how I check the email log and saw the emails07:11
PCatineanBen64, good question, how do I check for that?07:11
dotpixisjr_: what did you do?07:11
dotpixisjr_: and what have you tried07:12
Ben64PCatinean: well you should know how you set up the mail server07:12
neil_PCatinean, have you set it up to not allow passwords for login07:12
dotpixisjr_: and have you tried turing it on and off?07:12
jr_dotpixis: uninstalled pulsaudio/alsa (and force reload), dist upgrade, checked settings, checked volume07:12
jr_dotpixis: lel yes07:12
PCatineanBen64, I did not do the server setup, I think it was the only thng, any idea how I can check?07:12
dotpixisjr_: sound card? or onboard?07:12
jr_dotpixis: idk07:12
Ben64PCatinean: well you can't trust anything on the server now, so you can't07:13
dotpixisjr_: it did work before?07:13
jr_dotpixis: yes07:13
jr_i went to sound settings and clicked onto one tab07:13
PCatineanBen64, if I find it was the open relay thing, then can I assume that was it and if not just assume the worst and format?07:13
jr_then everything stopped07:13
Ben64PCatinean: no07:13
dotpixisjr_: try this "alsamixer" in terminal...07:13
jr_dotpixis: i didn't mute anything, neither did alsa07:14
jr_i checked07:14
PCatineanHow do I find out which email account was used to send out the spam?07:14
dotpixisjr_: also what are your settings for outputs?07:14
jr_dotpixis: idk, how do I check?07:14
dotpixisjr_: sound settings -> output devices07:14
dotpixisjr_ also what's your "built in audio" settings07:15
jr_dotpixis: "Built-in audio"07:15
jr_Profile is to my digital stereo (iec958) output07:16

g0tchayeah. so doing apt-get update/upgrade would do the job?11:32
ikoniathat will keep packages up to date when released11:32
g0tchaok.. including kernel updates?11:32
g0tchayoure answer is kinda confusing hehehe11:32

g0tchaso its a yes.. ok.. thanks!11:33
shambatwhy is bind 9.10 not planned for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS? 9.10.3 is the latest version and has a lot of new features over 9.911:36
ikoniapeople want stability, you could raise a package request and maybe get an official response on why its not in the relrease11:37
shambatikonia: understandable. how do I raise a package request?11:42

ikoniashambat: maybe also worth checking out what debian are pushing downstream to ubuntu11:45

PCatineanCan anyone see an issue in the configuration of the postfix server? http://hastebin.com/atuxosohih.ini11:50
ikoniawhat do'nt you state the problem11:52
ikoniarather than have us reading config files with no context11:52
PCatineanI was speaking here a bit earlier about the problem but will summarize11:52
PCatineanThe server was sending spam email ferrociously11:53
hpprinter100Hey, Does ubuntu have a patching API that will tell you if there's any vulns for a package?11:53
PCatineanReading possible entries to the postfix server bad restrictions was one of it and placement of relay_restrictions before sender_restrictions was bad because they get overriden11:53
PCatineanJust wanted to confirm that11:53
ikoniaonly you know your network and access rules11:54
MacroManI'm entering the world of compiling a program so I can do custom config. I take it my only option for keeping it up to date is to compile a new version when it gets released?11:54
ikoniathat sounds like a very bad idea11:55
ikoniathe right idea would be to work with the current package maintainers, or look at building your own packages, but you really need to understand the implications to your system and its dependencies11:55
homa_good bye my friends11:55
shambatikonia: looking here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS it says "Starting with the 14.04 LTS development cycle, automatic full package import is performed from Debian unstable" , so does this mean that 14.04 LST and future LTS versions will get it's packages from wherever Debian unstable is when debian is "forked" ?11:56
ikoniashambat: consider it a snapshot of a moment in time11:56
shambatikonia: yeah, and which moment is it usually? the annoucement date, or the release date or something else? trying to see which version of debian future lts version will draw from11:57
shambat16.04 will be a snapshot of debian jessie unstable?11:58
ikoniashambat: there is a phase of the release (can't remember the name) that dictates that point11:58
ikoniapackage freeze or something like that11:58
shambatI see11:58
MacroManikonia, Thanks. I have experimented with building my own packaging, but when the apt-get upgrades, my verison got overwritten.11:59
ikoniaMacroMan: so you need to understand it more/better then, as I said11:59
* MacroMan needs to work on his Engrish even though he is English.11:59
shambatikonia: it's probably DebianImportFreeze (17th feb for 16.04)12:00
=== Tsunami is now known as Guest19699
ikoniashambat: that sounds reasonable12:00
ikoniathe process is documented somewhere on the wiki12:00
MacroManikonia, OK thanks. So going down the route of my own package and keeping that up to date it a reasonable thing to do as long I research and understand the implications?12:01
ikoniain my view, yes12:01
ikoniait is by far the best way to do this12:01
MacroManThank you.12:02
PCatineanikonia, what would be the proper course of action to debug and fix the issue for the postfix problem?12:02
ikoniaPCatinean: look at why people are being allowed to spam through you - change the rule thats allowing them through12:06
PCatineanNot sure which one is that, all I could muster up by looking at the logs was the fact that the email user conveniently named test got a few login attempts failed then worked and started sending trash12:06
PCatineanI changed the email name and password and I can see him failing to login, but I want to know how did he end up accessing that user or password and doing it in the first place12:07
ikoniaso look at the logs where the spam is coming from, walk through your rules, and work out what criteria is being met to allow them through and lock it down12:07
PCatineanJust not sure how to do that12:10

MacroMannet2014, if the file is being actively written to when the computer hibernates, then  yes, but presumably, a hibernate will cull all network connections before unmounting the disk.12:29

ikoniaSirMoo: so again, what is the ip address of the dns server you are using according to ubuntu14:01
sven^_ikonia: and I said it's too slow for my use-case and asked _HOW_ to remove it. If you told me I could just disable it and maybe pointed me in the direction of a network-manager.override file in /etc/init you would have actually helped me.14:01
ioriaSirMoo,   check  /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<connection name>  , you'll need sudo to cat it14:01
ikoniasven^_: again, I disagree14:02
ikoniabut it's your machine and your solution14:02
ikoniayou'll find /etc/init may not be valid with systemd based versions now14:02
ioriaSirMoo,   and look for   dns=14:02
ikoniahe's not using the interfaces file14:02
ikoniahe's using network manager via the nmmanager applet14:03
sven^_well, if you disagree, enlighten me. I am just using what I find on help.ubuntu.com and like stated before I want to remove/disable or speed up network-manager. if you tell me how that works, you help me. If you tell me to delay other processes, you are not.14:04
ikoniasven^_: I suggest you find your own solution, I don't want to progress this futher14:04
SirMooThat is the correct one I gave you according to it, ikonia :|14:05
ikoniaSirMoo: according to ubuntu - what is the IP address of the DNS servers14:06
ikonianot what you think/what you expect, but what ubuntu is telling you it's using14:06
SirMooThat. Is.14:07
SirMooWhat's coming from the Connection Information tab. That's it.14:07
ikoniawhat is ?14:07
SirMoo68.105.28.1114:07
ikoniaok, so if you do "telnet 68.105.28.11 53" what do you get ?14:08
SirMooIt connects14:08
hippytaffDoes anyone have an opinion on the best way to get a ubuntu base for a personal distro? From server and removing the server stuff and adding X11 or from full desktop ubuntu and removing unity and stuff?14:08
ikoniaok, so you know thats fine,14:08
ikoniaSirMoo: so the most realistic option is ubuntu is not actually using that dns server14:09
ikoniaSirMoo: when you gave the wrong IP earlier, where did that come from14:09
SirMooI didn't give the wrong ip.14:09
sven^_ikonia: yeah, I did. echo "manual" > /etc/init/network-manager.override && echo -e "auto eth0\niface eth0 inet dhcp" && stop network-manager  same boot time. 6 seconds earlier network connection. Exactly what I wanted.14:09
ikoniasven^_: I don't need to know how you did it14:10
ikoniaSirMoo: you did, you gave 0.0.0.53 earlier14:10
SirMooI wrote the command how you said. :| So... I'm assuming you wanted me to replace the $ with the actual number, not as it was written.14:10
ikoniaSirMoo: lets do this a different way, can you please do "dig www.google.com" and put the output if a pastebin please14:11
sven^_ikonia: I am just telling you what I asked for, since you have failed to understand my question in the first place. Good day...14:11
SirMooConnection timed out; no servers could be reached14:12
ikoniaSirMoo: nothing else ?14:12

JCT500THzBasically, how do I get it so that the TV is the main display when I extend displays?14:13
SirMooSo... Doesn't look like it's useful other than the connection timed out part. :P14:13
ikoniaSirMoo: if you type just "nslookup"14:13
ikoniayou should get a prompt14:13
ikoniain that prompt type "server"14:13
ikoniawhat info do you get, (use a pastebin if it's more than 3 lines)14:13
SirMoodefault server and then address under it are 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1#53 Then it has those two lines again as ::1 and ::1#5314:15
ikoniaSirMoo: ok, so it's using dnsmasq14:15
ikoniaSirMoo: if you do "ps -ef | grep dnsmasq! do you see anything ?14:15
ikoniasorry "ps -ef | grep dnsmasq"14:15
SirMooI'm not sure how to get it into a paste to show...14:16
SirMooShould I be looking for something specific in that?14:17
ikoniaSirMoo: you're looking for a process running called dnsmasq or a network manager process with a dnsmasq option14:17
IJ231Anybody here have any experience with Mininet?14:17
SirMoo /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d ?14:18
=== scot_ is now known as CTC
SirMooThere appears ot be one running showing as owned by nobody.14:19
ikoniaSirMoo: there must be more to that line than that14:19
mcphailSirMoo: ps -ef | grep dnsmasq | nc 5.39.93.71 999914:19
ikoniamcphail: thats a nice trick, thank you14:20
SirMoomcphail :/ That returns a website url?14:20
ikoniagive us the website url14:21
mcphailSirMoo: yes - pastebin url14:21
SirMooThat is an amazingly nifty thing. @_@14:21
SirMoohttp://termbin.com/kra314:21
ikoniaSirMoo: so that suggests dnsmasq is running, which is good14:22
ikoniaso the question is where are the dnsmasq servers forwarding to14:22
SirMooDoes /etc/resolv.conf matter?14:22
ikonianot really as that should be pointing at 127.0.0.114:23
ikoniaif you look in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d what do you see ?14:23
SirMooIt was pointing to my other router (not the one now) so I simply commented it out...14:23
ikoniaSirMoo: what was ?14:23
SirMoo /etc/resolv.conf14:23
ikoniathat shouldn't be set14:23
ikoniathat should be using 127.0.0.1 if you're using dnsmasq via network manager14:24
inventer777SirMoo: hello14:24
ikoniawhich is what you said you where using14:24
hateballikonia: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dnsmasq suggests /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf unless I am misunderstanding the docs14:24
ikoniaSirMoo: have you manually edited /etc/resolv.conf in the past14:24
ikoniahateball: thank you, that makes sense14:24
hateballikonia: I am not on a recent enough release atm to verify, so14:25
ikoniahateball: it sounds current14:25
SirMooNot until now commenting it out. It has my other router as the nameserver and the search  gateway.huawei.net14:25
ikoniaSirMoo: something has manually edited that, as that is not being set by dhcp as it should be14:26
ikoniawhich explains why network manager thinks one thing, but your resolv.conf says another14:26

DirtyCajunhttp://pastebin.com/ByXpzUwL14:26
ikoniaDirtyCajun: it's normally set by the app your running via cron, as cron will normally return to the user running the cron,14:27
SirMooWell, I didn't change it when I connected to that router.14:27
ikoniayou'd need to setup an alias on the mail host14:27
SirMooThis router I'm using now worked before I connected to that one... (A while back) now coming back here... seems to not wnat to reconnect.14:28
DirtyCajunikonia: it seems as if its the OS from cron.daily14:28
ikoniaDirtyCajun: what is the script doing though ?14:28
ikoniaDirtyCajun: the fact that it's hitting postmaster, suggest an app is running rather than just a simple shell script14:29
DirtyCajunikonia: the last couple emails have been saying "file size changed while zipping"14:29
ikoniaDirtyCajun: so look at what scripts are in there14:29

amazoniantoadikonia, how could a file size change while it is being zipped? Wouldn't there be a lock to prevent that race condition?14:33

ikoniaI didn't write it14:33
amazoniantoadI thought that is how the linux kernel worked though.14:33

ikoniait's nothing to do with the kernel14:33
ikoniathe kernel is not in play here14:33
ikoniaDirtyCajun: look in /etc/crontab14:34

ikoniaSirMoo: ok, so thats fine then, we know the file is not there14:41
ufkhi14:41
ikoniaSirMoo: as I suspect this is being managed through network manager, I doubt that matters14:41
ikoniathe problem you have is that /etc/resolv.conf is not being updated by dhcp, someone has changed something14:41
ikoniasuch as the dhclient config14:42
ufki have a problem with mysql-server-5.6. i created a new ext4 partition at /mnt/backup, moved /var/lib/mysql to /mnt/backup, created a dynamic link from /mnt/backup/mysql to /var/lib/mysql, then started mysql server. i get errors that it can't create files in that directory. but how can it be? i moved the directory, it has the same permissions as it had before14:42
ufkanyhow even chmod 777 on that directory produces the same problem14:43
ikoniaufk: check the links and check apparmor14:44
SirMooYeeeah. So... Settings Network...14:44
SirMooThen clicked the connection...14:44
SirMooSeems ot have reset it...14:44
ikoniathats good14:44
SirMooThough... /etc/resolv.conf is still showing the same crap.14:45
ufkikonia: ok it's probably that apparmor thingy14:45
ikoniaSirMoo: that is worrying14:45
SirMooOooh. I broke it. Neat. Ok.14:46
SirMooSo I've edited that to nameserver 127.0.1.1 Internet works... I assume that will be a lasting fix?14:47

faxn-f = force -i = interactive. usually -i is the Default19:07
Jordan_UCryptoSiD: Again, an alias will just promote bad habits. Any time you use rm you should be careful, and much more so when you use rm with -r.19:08
onoderaHello rice friends19:08
feodoranI have a issue with my sound: the speakers do not work (unavailable), however I can still use headphones. I already tried reinstalling alsa + reboot. any ideas? alsa-info: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9dd736a81a94b156d13fb71efff72ca8d036dfc919:09
Jordan_UCryptoSiD: Take this as a lesson and change your habits, or make a function that yells at you any time you use "-f" with rm (but still runs the command).19:09
faxnmaybe instead of setting "rm" to an alias for rm='rm -f" you might want to do "alias rmF='rm -fr'"19:09

andy_wfcI've got a new 14.04 install that won't boot. My guess is the installer wrote grub to the thumb drive rather than the hard drive and I just need to manually install it. However, rescure mode won't load. It complains about being unable to read data from the CD (thumb drive) although integrity checks on the install media pass. What's the simplest way to just get a shell so I can re-install grub?21:47

TGYoshiHey guys, I'm .. attempting to upgrade from ubuntu 14.04 to 15.10, but the software updater of ubuntu fails to update software in general (not everything fails, I think, as the list shrinked) and upgrading to 15.10 also fails.. It simply shows that it failed together with that a system problem has been detected which I could report, no additional details... Where can I find the actual error?21:55
