barry_Is it possible my wordpress site to be hacked if i set file permission to 777 for everything under wordpress directory00:05
compdocwordpress seems to always be hacked00:06
dienesbarry_: it's possibly00:06
compdocif you do something wrong, like apply 777 to your entire drive, expect a few problems00:07
LambdaComplex"a few"00:08
compdocwait, 777 isnt going to help00:08
compdoc•777 – Everyone can read write and execute. In a web server, it is not advisable to set ‘777’ permission for your files and folders as it allows anyone to add malicious code to your server. However, in some cases, you will need to set the 777 permissions before you can upload any file to the server (For example, uploading images in WordPress)00:09
dienesyee, can you look the history?00:09
compdocso youre allowing the world+dog into wordpress?00:09
LambdaComplexbarry_: the short answer is "yes," basically00:10
barry_Thanks all for info. I think 777 uploads directory is just enough, but 777 on whole wordpress directory would be insecure00:11
ozbrkguys hi need to ask a question here I have too much bass on some songs. I tried to decrase voulme of surrond from terminal alsamixer but it reset itlef when I adjust volume from my keyboard00:12
dienesozbrk: hi, did you use amixer?00:16
nolsenI upgraded kernels and apparently it broke virtualbox, how do I fix?00:20
yeatsnolsen: how did you install virtualbox?00:21
nolsenwith apt-get00:22
yeatsnolsen: it should build a kernel module with DKMS when it updates00:22
nolsenI updated the kernel manually.00:22
preciseOk all, I'm about to jump off a cliff. I can't for the life of me get Ubuntu running on my dell precision m4500. Does anybody here have the kindness and time to help me out a bit?00:23
nolsenfrom http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/00:23
ddybingprecise: Sure. Just go ahead, and we will do the best to help you.00:23
yeatsprecise: just ask your question and people will answer as they can00:23
yeatsnolsen: you might have to install the kernel headers for the version you installed, then figure out how to build the vbox module for your kernel00:24
nolsenI already got the kernel headers00:24
nolsenBut I don't know how to build the vbox module00:24
nolsenThere is no documentation for that.00:25
ozbrknever use a mixer before00:25
ozbrkdienes: nope00:25
yeatsnolsen: you might try playing around with /usr/lib/virtualbox/vboxdrv.sh (at least that's where it's located on my 15.10 system)00:26
nolsenNo thanks.00:26
yeatsnolsen: there's plenty of documentation for building the vbox module on the virtualbox site00:26
nolsenToo much work.00:27
yeatsnolsen: ok - suit yourself, but this is probably why it's a bad idea to mess with non-packaged kernels until you know what you're doing :-/00:27
preciseOk cool. I recently got a Dell Precision m4500 through work (to play with). It has an Intel i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, and an nVidia GPU. For the past two days I have been trying to install Ubuntu, 15.10 and 14.04.  The install process is always clean, no warnings or anything. First boot then provides me with a blank screen. I can access GRUB so it's not a total loss. Research suggests nVidia drivers are the culprit.00:28
preciseSorry for the wall of text. I have tried using the nomodeset GRUB option also and that also did not work. Any ideas?00:29
yeatsprecise: have you actually installed the correct nvidia driver for your gpu?00:29
Bashing-om!nomodeset | precise00:30
ubottuprecise: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter00:30
yeatsprecise: this may help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#Installation_without_X_.2F_from_the_console00:30
ddybingprecise: I struggled for months, getting Ubuntu (as well as other distros on my system) to work. The drivers from Nvidias website did not work. I then installed "nvidia-352" via apt-get and it has been working like a charm ever since.00:31
preciseyeats: After install, I reboot, and I don't have the option to access any sort of interfaces Graphical or Command line.00:31
ddybingI'm using the Nvidia GTX 660 Ti00:31

Roxecubottu, we know that haha00:31
ubottuRoxec: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)00:31
preciseddybing: Nope. I did get the text option in GRUB to work once, and it froze at loading initial ramdisk00:32
ddybingprecise: Have you tried running the system in rescue mode from the GRUB boot menu?00:32
preciseddybing: yup, nothing happens. This has occured over multiple reinstalls too. :/00:33

ddybingprecise: Then you will be able to boot from a live cd, and run installation of packages to your local installation, to install - for instance - the Nvidia-drivers.00:44
TinyNattyHi. I'm having some trouble with upstart. I'm no longer able to access my services.00:44
TinyNattyI keep getting the error: initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused00:44

I have all permissions set correctly, and the php ini vars (upload max size, post max size) set to 512M. It's hon05:12

mynicknameWell..Real quick, while I am here, I am having problems finding an answer via Google, but is there a simple way to start and stop a cron job on command without starting and stopping the whole service?05:41
mynicknameFor example, if I am working on a project and I want backups made every 10 minutes, can I make a script to start the backups, then when I am finished I can stop that certain cron task and then do a cleanup? Thanks05:42
waters33637Is this a problem: [Mon Feb 08 16:12:45.950474 2016] [core:error] [pid 5278] [client] AH00124: Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace.05:46
tomreynmynickname: since these steps you list seem to depend on one another, you should make the cron job carry out all of them. you could still have one script (which is started by the cron job) call the other script if you would like these separate steps / stages to be handled by different scripts05:48
lotuspsychjegood morning to all05:48
mynicknametomreyn: I see what you are saying, and it makes sense for the cron job to carry out all scripts, but is there a way to trigger the cron job via script?05:52
mynicknameSo I may turn it on and off easily05:52
tomreynmynickname: cron jobs are triggered based on timig by the cron daemon, that's its very purpose. if you wish to run a script manually, just do so05:53

azizLIGHTyou need some kind of incremental archiving18:00
azizLIGHTso you only upload the incremental changes18:00
linwizazizLIGHT: I agree. I have no idea what that involves, or how to do it.18:06
Indifferent_____\disconnect #ubuntu18:09
k1l_Indifferent_____: /part18:10
azizLIGHTlinwiz: if you're open to it, dont make a singular archive containing all the files, but instead keep them as files in some specific dir, then you could use rsync properly for the incremental changes. or you could use other programs that act directly on the files, rather than a archive which is just a snapshot of the files in total, and changes wholly when even a single file is added/removed/changed.18:13
azizLIGHTbut i think youre doing it for the compression?18:13
mcphaillinwiz: rsync isn't going to send a file which hasn't changed. And if your archive does change, it should only send a binary delta18:14
azizLIGHTok so im wrong then18:14
azizLIGHTif thats true18:14
linwizI'd like to back up my files specifically to tar.gz (which I am) for compression and encryption. The problem is when I (re)create the archive file the file is changed and is uploaded to the cloud because it changed, even if the files in the archive have not changed.18:16
mcphaillinwiz: the gzipping is the problem there18:17
azizLIGHTmcphail: what does the gzipping do that it causes this18:18
mcphailazizLIGHT: it will break binary deltas completely. The archive could look very different on minor changes18:18
mcphaillinwiz: a very clumsy solution springs to mind, however18:19
mcphaillinwiz: you could create a large, empty sparse file, format it as btrfs (which has transparent compression by default), mount it via loop device and copy your files there instead of creating tar.gz files. You can then use rsync natively on it to back up to your remote host18:21
mcphaillinwiz: as I said, clumsy (but it would work)18:22

akiksquib: and your goal is to show the grub menu for 10 seconds?21:18
Bashing-ommistralol: Depends on what methods you have used to install and how you cleaned up prior to doing a re-install .21:19
squintysquib,  http://paste.ubuntu.com/15004735/21:20
mistralolBashing-om: i am at a fresh install of 15.1021:22
squibakik, yeah. I want to be able to get into the cli so I can look around21:22
mistralolBashing-om: i just assumed instaling nvidia-current would work :)21:22
squibI wanna look at the grub root mount and all that21:22
squintysquib, make the changes to what I pasted.... then run sudo update-grub.  it will give you an automatic display of the grub menu when booting, with no splash and a 10 second time out21:22
squibsquinty, ok let me give that a shot21:22
akiksquib: "GRUB_TIMEOUT=10", "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=" and "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=" that'll do it21:23
Bashing-ommistralol: I would also .. on a fresh install, what returns ' sudo ubuntu-drivers devices ; sudo ubuntu-drivers list ' then we consider having the system autoinstall a driver .21:24
squibsquinty, your config changes didn't work21:25
squibtrying what akik said now21:25
mistralolBashing-om: yes i also tried one of what was in the recommended list but it doesnt work either21:25
squibsquinty, actually apologies I made an error21:25

squibI'll advise in a sec21:26
Bashing-ommistralol: Run the above, let's insure the card is still supported, or so new there is no driver yet availabale .21:26
squibyes confirmed I get no grub screen21:26
squintysquib,  used that config for years now.  three ubuntu (two unity and one xfce) boxes here currently using the same config21:26

squibakik, that didn't work either. :-/21:28
akiksquib: can you pastebin your /etc/default/grub ?21:28
Bashing-ommistralol: That card is well supported . OK .. let's look now at what is installed for a driver : ' dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia ' .21:29
akiksquib: i'm starting to wonder my sanity  :)21:29
mistralolBashing-om: ahh i think i have a combination of 304 and 352 installed21:30

Bashing-ommistralol: A change from what I had expected for the recommended driver ! see : http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/98373/en-us . Nvidia now recommends the 361 version .21:31
akiksquib: and you ran sudo update-grub afterwards?21:31

squibI don't see why21:32
Bashing-ommistralol: Think'n .... what returns ' apt-cache show nvidia-361 ' ?21:33
squibI'm going to throw this in vbox and see if it makes any difference.21:33
squibakik, am I supposed to be hitting some sort of escape sequence to get the grub menu to appear? it should just appear for 10 seconds automatically right?21:34
mistralolBashing-om: no package for 36121:34
akiksquib: yes, on my computer, i'll get the the menu for 10 seconds and after that it boots the default21:34
squintysquib, same here  no key push required21:35
Bashing-ommistralol: Surprised .. what release is this again ?21:35
akikcould this be about uefi somehow?21:35
mistralolBashing-om: i actually think the driver is working. but something else is failing when i login21:38
mistralolBashing-om: looks like compviz is crashing21:39
jonathan_hi all21:39
Bashing-ommistralol: Confirmed, 361 is not avail .. my mistake . OK .. how bout ' sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia* ; sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall ' . On a fresh install assuming no install attempt has been made from OEM and no PPAs are active for a driver . // hold this thought and we can look at what X is foing from the the log file (??) .21:40
mistralolBashing-om: that could get interesting as there is also an amd card in the machine :)21:41

squiblol, I have to disable hyperv system feature to support 64-bit vbox21:42

mistralolBashing-om: i was looking in the Xorg log file and i am currently trying to remove the radeon driver21:51
mistralolBashing-om: is there an easyier way to remove it / disable it?21:51
bpromptBinaryDinner:  I use jpdfbookmarks -> http://flavianopetrocchi.blogspot.com/2008/07/pdf-bookmarks-editor.html  <-- is a java app, works very well, you can use the GUI to make the bookmarks, or what I often do is, make a few, export them to .txt, then edit the txt to customize sublevels and such, and then import the .txt bookmarks into the pdf at once, and then save21:52
mistralolBashing-om: apt-get remove wants to basically pull most of opengl out at the same time :)21:52
Bashing-ommistralol: Well ,, if there is an option in Bios. if disbaled in bios the OS will never see it .21:52
bpromptBinaryDinner:   when I do just a few bookmarks in the pdf, just the GUI is ok, I do the export and then import, when I do quite a few, since it's simpler to do mass editing in a text editor21:53
BinaryDinnerbprompt: going to check that now, looks promising21:55
bpromptBinaryDinner:   I've used it for a long while, works very well21:56
bpromptBinaryDinner:   the .txt bookmarks importing feature, is the part I used the most, since is far simpler when making lots of bookmarks and text editing and levels and sublevels21:56
BinaryDinnerbprompt: what version are you using, binaries or compiled source?21:58
bpromptBinaryDinner:   it comes in a .jar, is binary, yes21:58
mistralolBashing-om: so disabling the wnd card in the bios seems to stop it from crashing but i think i messed something else up along the way22:00
mistralolBashing-om: it would appear i have no panel now :)22:00

mistralolBashing-om: the onboard which is the amd22:05
squibakik, from technet "Because of legacy hardware being removed from emulation in Generation 2 virtual machines, the grub menu countdown timer counts down too quickly for the grub menu to be displayed, immediately loading the default entry. Until grub is fixed to use the EFI-supported timer, modify /boot/grub/grub.conf, /etc/default/grub, or equivalent to have “timeout=100000” instead of the default “timeout=5”.22:05
