squintybluesfreak72,  where you playing around with your video drivers too?00:00

squintybluesfreak72,  so you may need to reinstall the video driver too then.  might be an idea just to do a quick reboot and use the nomodeset to see if you can get into your desktop   others hear my other suggestions too00:03
dioi agree00:03
bluesfreak72It's been a while since I messed with grub.  How do I stop the bootloader and choose nomodeset?00:04
dioumm mine just pops up00:04
diobut I'm dual boot00:05
bluesfreak72dio:  I'm not dual boot.00:05
bluesfreak72I can do ctrl-alt-f1 to get a login shell.00:05
squintybluesfreak72,   hold down shift key after the computer boot splash screen   that will bring up the grub menu.   highlight your first entry and then press the e key.00:05
jmwAnyone have any experience with VMWare Workstation Pro running under Ubuntu?  Just kind of wondering if anyone has any first person thoughts on the general performance under Linux.00:06
dioyeah that is shell you don't want that yet00:06
ubuntu-matehola00:06
squintybluesfreak72,  at the line that says "quiet splash"  add nomodset00:07
squintynomodeset   that is00:07
bluesfreak72squinty:  Holding shift down does nothing.  I only have a purple screen and then it tries to go into lightdm.00:07
daniel331hi all. having a problem with my audio on an hp spectre laptop. worked fine up till now. for some reason the audio device has vanished from the prefs area and I cant get audio thru the speakers or headphones00:07
squintybluesfreak72,  may have to use the escape key then (iirc, needed for uefi boxs)00:08
diodaniel331 on an odd note does your headphone jack have a little switch build into it?00:08
dioI had one laptop that did the same thing it was just a stuck switch for the headphones00:09
daniel331dio: good point. its a new laptop so I wouldnt have noticed. but... ah... no? I dont think so?00:10
diook. so that is the easy stuff out of the way00:10
diodoes alsa mixer pix anything up in terminal00:10
diojust type alsamixer in terminal Ctrl+Alt+T will open terminal00:11
bluesfreak72squinty: I don't have uefi enabled in the bios.00:11

daniel331running alsamixer atm but not entirely sure how to interpet it. I did some weird things that never worked involving pulse audio streaming a long time ago and I stream thru bluetooth to a pair of speakers sometimes. long story short: my audi prefs ussually has four devices in it (2 for pa streaming, 1 for bt, and for 1 the physical sound card) so I think alsaxmiser might be pickuing up one of those. IN ANY CASE it was a whi00:13
daniel331le ago that the pa network stuff was going on, it never went anywhere, and it never made my sound card disapear before!00:13
daniel331however now I get three more devices ive never seen before appearing intermittently as a result of running  alsamixer. but they go away again after a few seconds. is that normal?00:14
dioyeah that is odd. I wish I could help more but I need to run. Hope someone here can help you00:14
bluesfreak72squinty: uefi boot is disabled.00:14
daniel331thanks dio00:14
diosorry but you are welcome00:14
bluesfreak72squinty: I have tried holding the left shift - and then the next time holding the right shift.  The boot just keeps plugging along.00:15
squintybluesfreak72,  wireless keyboard?  maybe try usb or ps2 keyboard00:16
bluesfreak72squinty: I don't have a usb keyboard and the laptop doesn't have a ps2 port.00:17
daniel331so basically alsamixer gives me lots of different options? 3x S/PDIF outputs, an "Default", and an "HDMI output".00:17
daniel331I think that means the sound card isnt detected atall? ( I think the HDMI output is actually a chip built into the onboard graphics card)00:17
squintybluesfreak72,  ahhh laptop  never mind then00:17
daniel331not sure what the S/PDIFs are all about ,, maybe pulseaudio network virtual devices00:17
bluesfreak72squinty:  It's an Asus N53SN.00:18
squintybluesfreak72,  did you try reinstalling your video drivers?  maybe someone else could offer suggestions as I am running out of time here  :)00:19
bluesfreak72squinty: I'll try that.  If it doesn't work, I'm probably going to reinstall and not install any other window managers/desktop environments.00:20
daniel331can anyone else help me with my sound card not being recognised issue?00:20
squintybluesfreak72,  not to fond of mixing desktops either myself....been in similar circumstances as you are now  lol00:21
bluesfreak72squinty: I just started up with ubuntu before.  The last time I messed with ubuntu was when they were still using gnome.00:23
bluesfreak72I should say I just started up with ubuntu again.00:23
ruvenssgood old times00:24
squintybluesfreak72,  if you do end up reinstalling, you might just want to grab ubuntu gnome 16.04 beta which just came out.00:25
TTTA_can anyone point me towards a fix for a second moniter not showing up?00:25
bluesfreak72squinty: I don't do alpha or beta.  I've been burned doing that before.00:26

ToeSnacksis there a place to see a quick glance of the changes from 15.10 to 16.04?01:29
reisioJef91: glxinfo will have some info01:30
Jef91reisio, what am I looking for in the output01:30
ToeSnacksalso if doing a fresh install this close to 16.04 release is it more advisable to install 15.10 now and upgrade in 2 months or just install 16.04 and run it through alpha/beta?01:30
reisioJef91: direct rendering01:31
reisioJef91: glxgears will also be useful, you'd be looking for FPS far exceeding what the human eye can even perceive (about 30)01:31
reisiothat is, far greater than 3001:31
reisioToeSnacks: I doubt they have compiled that information formally yet, might ask #ubuntu+101:32
Jef91glxgears is running at 60fps - so likely means drivers are working?01:32
reisioToeSnacks: putting off an update, IMO, is pointless01:32
reisioToeSnacks: there are those who would suggest never installing .04 and only doing .10 installs, though01:32
ToeSnackswhy?01:32
reisioToeSnacks: presumably they find the former buggy01:32
ToeSnacksthe 04s are the LTS releases01:33
reisioif that were the case, I would not use such a distro01:33
reisioToeSnacks: sorry I think I mean .04.1, vs .0401:33
ToeSnacksah01:33
ToeSnacksso provided the use case is not mission critical 16.04 should be fine to run right now?01:33
k1lToeSnacks: if you need to ask dont run betas. if you are fine with a non booting system or other possible issues, then you can isntall the beta and become the regular final release with running the updates01:37
ToeSnacksk1l: I need to ask because people here use it and know how broken it is. I know it will update, I am asking what degree of brokenness I will be met with.01:40
k1lToeSnacks: a beta is quite stable. but again: its a dev release and it can break anytime. so it can be good 2 weeks and then dont boot anymore. that is the risk.01:41
k1lso the conclusion: if you need to worry about stableness, then dont use development releases.01:41

reisioit simply doesn't have the developers for it, at the moment, AFAIK02:32

reisioand Ubuntu from the desktop02:33

mustuHi, I'm trying to install a package from a repo. It's working for other people but not my fresh Ubuntu 14 installation ...04:21
Ben64mustu: how is it not working04:21
mustuthere seems to be some issue in my ubuntu setup or i'm doing it wrong..04:21
cfhowlettmustu, what package??04:21
mustuThe repo is added correctly apt-get update doesn't throw any error... it also lists the package in reply to apt-cache show ... but when I try to install it it says "E: Package 'elasticsearch' has no installation candidate"04:23
mustuit's elasticsearch's official repo for Ubuntu04:23
cfhowlettmustu, seems to be a ppa as it's not available on my 14.0404:23
dioelasticsearch I tried installing that to run an ELK stack didn't get very far. :(04:24
mustucfhowlett  yes it's a ppa04:24
cfhowlett!ppa | mustu04:24

LoshkiI see google hits for "How To Install Elasticsearch In Ubuntu", making me wonder if there isn't some trick to it.04:25
diohttps://www.elastic.co/downloads/elasticsearch could go here and get the DEB04:25
mustuso this channel doesn't support ppa04:25
cfhowlettPPA is preferable to a random .deb I think04:25
diowho's PPA04:25
mustumanual deb installation is working.. but I want this repo to work.. I asked in elastic forums and it's woking for everyone else there04:25
diowhats you ubuntu version04:26
cfhowlettmustu, well as we DO NOT support PPA's, best you consult elasticsearch support.04:26
dioyeah each PPA is different think of it like shopping in a different store04:26
mustui also worked for me few weeks ago.. I've done basic troubleshooting.. repo DNS is resolved properly ... apt is building the cache correctly.. apt-cache show elasticsearch  will return details about the package04:26
diostrange04:27
dioid just use the deb04:27
dioor compile from source04:27
mustuI can but I want to troubleshoot the repo issue..as it seems weird04:28
dioI could never get Kibana to resolve and tags so I gave up04:28
LoshkiI agree with dio. 'gdebi the deb' and see if it installs.04:28
mustuI have tried and deb works perfectly.. I removed that ... coz I need the repo to work04:29
diowhat is different in the repo?04:29
diosource should give the same result04:29
mustudio  I need the repo to work .. that's what's bugging me04:30
Ben64repository will give updates and it will be installed properly04:30
mustuwhen it's working for everyone else then why not me04:30
diolol. well some dont04:30
dioyou get the crypto from it04:30
mustudio  yes the key is installed04:30
Ben64mustu: can you join #ubuntu-offtopic and continue this there04:31
dioand when you do apt-get update04:31
lori_hi04:32
mustuOk Listen.. there were some remains of manual deb installation.. properly purging the deb has made a difference .. now apt-cache show elasticsearch ... also doesn't return anything04:32

drale2kDo i understand this properly. Scripts posted in f.e. cron.daily will run every day, i don't have to use the schedule syntax "23 18 * * * etc" here04:44
drale2kscripts posted in cron.d are if you need a special schedule like every 4 days, then you need the timer syntax04:44
jerichodotmwhat is the correct name of the horizantal bar at the bottom of the screen where open apps are shown?04:47
uchuataskbar? dock?04:47
jerichodotmuchua, taskbar it is.. thank you04:48
uchuajerichodotm, no prob04:49
Ben64drale2k: use crontab to edit stuff with schedules. you can put things into cron.daily monthly weekly whatever, but keep in mind those run as root04:50
drale2kBen64: ok thanks. Are those run like the name suggest, f.e. cron.daily is executed by the system every day ?04:51
Ben64yep04:51
drale2kso usually i only need crontab to run it on user level04:51
drale2kin rare cases as root in one of those folders ?04:51
Ben64depends what you're trying to do04:51
Ben64root has a crontab too04:51
drale2ki have a rails app and want to run a rails task to clean up the db every 2 weeks04:52
drale2ki don't think i need root for this04:52
Ben64sounds like something you should put into crontab04:52
drale2kok thank you04:52
tardyscholarSo guys, what do you think comes after Ubuntu "Z"?05:04
cfhowletttardyscholar, ask #ubuntu-offtopic please.  tech support only here.05:05
drale2kwhen i put something into my crontab, when is it picked up?05:14
drale2ki don't need to reboot or something or ?05:14
Ben64nope it works after you save05:15
rwpdrale2k, crontab changes happen immediately. Check /var/log/syslog for CRON entries showing the tasks being run for you.05:22
drale2kthanks , i did but i only see cron.hourly in the logs05:23
drale2kalthough i set one to run every 5 mins05:23
drale2kthat's now over 15 mins ago05:23
rwpHmm...05:23
Ben64drale2k: what is the relevant line from "crontab -l"05:23
drale2k1 0 * * * dokku dokku --rm run toku rake delete:old_messages 2>&105:24
drale2ki cahgned it to every minute now05:24
rwpdrale2k, Wrong format.05:24
rwpYou have dokku dokku in there twice.05:24
Ben641 0 * * * isn't every minute either05:24
rwpIs it supposed to be in there twice?05:24
drale2kdokku username and then dokku for the command05:24
Ben64you don't put a user in there05:25
drale2kdo i have to set the username if i am running it as the crontba user ?#05:25
drale2khm ok, i took it from some docs05:25
rwpOnly put the username in there for /etc/cron.d/* and friend crontabs.05:25
Ben64did you look at the example when editing crontab?  # m h  dom mon dow   command05:26
rwpPersonal crontabs of the 'crontab -l' and 'crontab -e' variety know you are the user and don't have that field.05:26
drale2koh * would be every minute05:26
rwpThat was the original format for the crontab files.05:26
drale2kso 1 would be every first minute of the hour ?05:26
Ben64yep05:26
rwpThen later the /etc/cron.d came along for Vixie cron and it needed the added username field so that it can tell the difference.05:27
Ben641 0 * * * would be 12:01am05:27
drale2kok this should work * * * * * dokku --rm run toku rake delete:old_messages 2>&105:27
Ben64maybe not05:27
drale2kthat is for every minute, not ?05:28
Ben64i have no idea what dokku is05:28
Ben64or why you have the : or the 2>&105:28
drale2kdokku is like your personal heroku05:28
drale2kbuilt on docker05:28
daxdrale2k: yes, that is every minute05:29
drale2ki have read that with 2>&1 i can have error logs05:29
drale2k2 is the stderror i believe05:29
Ben64you should put that into a script and have it called from crontab05:29
rwp0 is stdin, 1 is stdout, 2 is stderr05:30
rwpYes, call it from a script.05:30
rwpThat is ten times easier than trying for a one-liner in crontab.05:31
drale2kwhere would you put that script, is there a convention ?05:31
rwpIf it is your own personal thing then $HOME/bin is typical.05:32
drale2kok thanks05:32
rwpCall the program by the full path.  For example $HOME/bin/foo in the crontab.05:33
pamIs there a way to fix a lagging youtube problem?05:33
rwpBen64, The ":" in that command looks just like part of the option argument to dokku. The 2>&1 is useless at that line however. It redirects stderr to stdout but in a crontab line that is not needed as all output is emailed to the user.05:35
rwppam, Isn't all lagging youtube problems due to the network being too slow to keep it from needing buffering?05:38
drale2krwp: i removed the 2>&1, i thought it would put errors in the log file05:39
rwp2>&1 redirects stderr to stdout (2 redirected to 1).05:40
rwpCron mails all output, either stdout or stderr, doesn't matter, to the user owning the crontab.05:40
rwpCron doesn't log user output to a log file. It goes out as email to the user.05:40
drale2kemail is  the only option to see errors?05:41
rwpYou probably need to have a mail transport agent such as postfix or exim installed in order to have a way for mail from cron to get delivered to /var/mail/$USER however.05:41
drale2ki installed postfix05:41
drale2kjsut now05:41
rwpIt is easy to redirect all output in the script to a log file of your choosing.05:41
drale2ki am also now logging to cron.log05:41
rwpAt the top of the script if you put 'exec >/tmp/mylogfile 2>&1' it will redirect all output from that script to the file.05:42
pamrwp: youtube videos play fine on my windows machine and on my phone...and tablet...just not on this laptop05:42
rwpFor debugging #!/bin/sh scripts  it is useful to add 'set -x' after that to add tracing of commands too.05:43
eferreirahey, anyone know the mode to open a fifo in which you can both read and write?05:43
rwppam, I have no idea. Graphics too slow for video playback? Maybe.  I don't know.05:45
rwpeferreira, More details please.  Opening a fifo from a shell script?  C program?  Other?05:45

HulioGuys, i have this issue: checking for Qt5 qmake >= 5.2.0... not found05:57
Huliowhat is that meant?05:57
Hulio./configure  ......long run and it say: checking for Qt5 qmake >= 5.2.0... not found05:57
Huliodo i neeed qt5 installed?05:57
Hulioif so, how do i do that?05:57
rwpHulio, Yes. You need to install the qt development packages.05:58
Huliohow to do that?05:58
Ben64you need qt5-qmake equal to or greater than 5.2.0, but we don't support compiling software in this channel05:58
Hulioshow me what command to do?05:58
rwpHulio, What are you trying to build? If there is already a package for it then install it. Or install the "apt-get build-dep $foo" for it.05:59
Hulioi try to build qbittorent05:59
Hulioi want to learn to compile it05:59
Hulioinsteal of getting from APP05:59
Ben64then you chose the wrong distro05:59
Huliooh05:59
Ben64ubuntu has packages and a package manager. thats the way to get software06:00
cfhowlettHulio, linux from scratch sounds like your flavor06:00
Huliohmm, so no way to compile qbittorent, i download it from the creator site06:00
Huliorwp, i got it from here the tar : http://www.qbittorrent.org/download.php06:01
Ben64you can do it, but it's not on topic here06:01
HulioBen64, i know man, but at least show something06:01
rwpHulio, I am shocked that it is off topic for #ubuntu.06:02
Ben64sudo apt-get install qbittorrent06:02
HulioBen64, come on man06:02
Hulioi dont want that06:02
Ben64then you're in the wrong channel06:02

LoshkiI'm a bit confused about why compiling Ubuntu software on Ubuntu is off topic for #ubuntu06:03
sofingHi is there smart box  wih ubuntu without without buy from Chine ?06:03
somsipLoshki: read the link above06:03
Loshkisomsip: doesn't say it's unsupported. Other ubottu entries typically declare that explicitly.06:05
xanguasofing: check thinkpenguin.com and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuPre-installed06:05

LoshkiHulio: begin with 'apt-get source qbittorrent'. You'll need to find out its dependencies and load them too.06:07
sofingxaguan , why no device in my country?06:07
somsipLoshki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/SupportersGuide "We rarely recommend installing from source, but people can be directed towards upstream projects if appropriate "06:08
rwpsomsip, In https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingSoftware pont number 6 says "You want to try your hand at compiling programs from scratch."06:09
Loshkisomsip: ok06:09
Ben64that doesn't mean it has to be supported on the irc channel. if we increased the scope of the channel to "everything you could possibly do whilst running ubuntu" it'd be madness06:10
Huliorwp, what is the point of not having to compile from source?   lets say ubuntu app provided version 4...and the source is version 506:10
rwpPersonally I always used packaged software whenever possible. It is soooo much easier. But freedom to look at and modify the source is a fundamental freedom.06:10
Huliodon't you want to get the latest?06:10
somsiprwp: that does not refer to giving support on IRC. You (and everyone) can do what you want with your version of Ubuntu. The help most people need in compiling (and supporting an environment of mixed packages/compiled) is outside the scope of #ubuntu06:10
somsip!latest | Hulio06:10
ubottuHulio: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.06:10
cfhowletthulio there are many reasons NOT to get the latest, but you are free to do so.06:11
LoshkiHulio: In general, I'd rather have the most stable than the most recent. And I'd rather not wait to compile it unless there's a good reason to do so. The amount of effort involved can vary from trivial to enormous.06:12
sofingvery bad distribution of devices with ubuntu in my country06:12
Hulioalright then06:12
Hulioi do sudo apt-get install qbittorrent then06:12
cfhowlettsofing is there a question there?06:12
Huliothanks guys06:12
rwpI would rather have most stable and bug free than the latest.06:12
Hulioit's not even easy to compile anyway06:12
rwpI don't repaint my house every year just to let people know I live there.06:12
sofingthere a proteste06:13
rwpHulio, I wouldn't give up on compiling from source that quickly. It is a useful skill. But if the channel doesn't want to support it here then it simply means you should respect that and not discuss it here.06:14
kangurohi06:14
Hulioi like qbittorent over transmission :)06:14

cfhowlettsofing, what country???06:14
sofingspain , earth of corruptos06:14
Loshkisofing: you usually pay a premium for hardware *guaranteed* to run Ubuntu. I look for hardware where people have mentioned successfully running Ubuntu. Otherwise, I suppose you could go shopping with a live-cd in hand, and insist on seeing it run before you buy.06:15
cfhowlettsofing, make an Ubuntu USB.  go to computer store.  choose computer.  insert USB and boot ubuntu.  test.  buy.06:16

EriC^^Ben64: ?07:07
Ben64ttyrnpuu doesn't have physical access to the machine, and doesn't have a floppy07:07
Ben64so that can't be correct07:07
stoopkidBen64: interestingly, if i do the following sequence: 1) eject -i on /dev/cdrom, 2) press physical button (cdrom tray is now ejected & cdrom is removed from /dev), and then 3) eject -t /dev/sr0, the cdrom tray closes & cdrom comes back to /dev07:07
ttyrnpuuYes, I am running a VPS thats why there is a problem07:07
ttyrnpuuThe software i am using needs an external device for export which is either USB or floppy or cdrom07:08
Ben64so why not do like i said 14 minutes ago07:08
ttyrnpuuBen64, you mean something like "sudo mount -o loop /path/floppy.img /dev/fd0" ?07:09
Ben64no. not /dev/fd0. there is no /dev/fd0 since you don't have a floppy drive07:10
stoopkidBen64: so, doing the eject -t on /dev/sr0 prevented me from making a symbolic link, but if i create a symbolic link during that phase after (2) where it's removed from cdrom, using the command ln -s /dev/sr0 ./cdrom, the symbolic link indeed works07:11
stoopkidwhere cdrom is removed from /dev **07:11
stoopkidif i try 'eject -i on /dev/sr0', it still fails to lock the tray07:13
stoopkidand also removes the cdrom symbolic link when i press the button07:13
Ben64yeah, it doesn't work for you07:13
stoopkidluckily it doesn't remove /dev/sr007:14
stoopkidfailing to lock the tray is one thing, but i feel like removing the symbolic links is a bug, should i report it somewhere?07:15

Robr3rdWhat would be the best way for me to transfer the contents of my current (live) HDD to an SSD? The HDD is 500GB and the SSD is 256GB so something like `dd` wouldn't work, but the *content* on the HDD will easily fit into the SSD13:47
EriC^^Robr3rd: rsync is great for that13:47
EriC^^sudo rsync -av /source /destination13:48
Robr3rdEriC^^, That's where I was headed, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use it while the system is running13:48
ash_workzBluesKaj: why did you choose Kubuntu?13:48

Guest58295he guys do somebody know something fun to do with ubuntu13:56
EriC^^Robr3rd: you can use uefi with it easily13:56
BluesKajash_workz, neither , it's a darn good desktop and once configured it's easier to do what you want and also i prefer the look Tha's my s and themes available, that's all. Try it for yourself to find out.13:57
lateniteHi folks, what package contains 'hwinfo' ? I can not find it13:57
EriC^^Robr3rd: you'll need to modify /etc/fstab on the ssd, so it matches the uuid of the partitions on it13:57
EriC^^Robr3rd: do you have a live usb?13:57
Robr3rdEriC^^, Okay. So basically, I should be able to just fire off `rsync /dev/sdb1 /dev/sda1 && rsync /dev/sdb2 /dev/sda2` and so on for each partition (with some flag I'd imagine), and the just update the fstab in `/dev/sda1` (root) ?13:58

ash_workzBluesKaj: there are quite a few things I am seeing about Plasma that are interesting: "This includes Plasma Desktop, KDE's innovative desktop interface. While the fully integrated KDE Workspaces are only available on Linux and Unix, some of these features are...13:59
ash_workz...available on other platforms. "13:59
EriC^^Robr3rd: no, rsync just copies dirs it can't handle the devices13:59
Robr3rdEriC^^, But those *are* directories (per "Unix-y-ness"), so why wouldn't it work? A recursive copy of contents should just run as a recursive copy of contents14:01
BluesKajash_workz, well th eonly thing to do is try it by installing kubuntu-desktop then choosing which desktop you want to use at the login page14:01
lateniteI have found http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/admin/hwinfo14:01
latenitebut I can not install it14:01
latenitewhy?14:01
EriC^^Robr3rd: you need to 1) make a fresh gpt partition on the ssd, create a 300mb efi partition, and the rest of the partitions of the install, copy the install to the ssd with the partitions mounted (efi included), modify /etc/fstab to point to the new uuid's, and then reinstall grub from a chroot14:01
EriC^^Robr3rd: no, those are files not directories, files that represent the device14:02
EriC^^rsync doesn't understand that, it just copies files from a mounted filesystem, but it does it in a really awesome way using a differencing algorithm and checksums everything too14:03
Robr3rdEriC^^, Ah, okay. Thanks!14:04
EriC^^Robr3rd: also, you need to do stuff from a live usb, sorry about that14:04

minas114lotuspsychje, Hello! I asked about fsck running on every boot two days ago, and you told me to try a clean install. I did it, and it doesn't run on every boot, if the kernel is 4.2. With 4.4, it does run every boot, so it was the kernel... I'm interested to know what might be causing this, if you happen to know :)16:10
easyOnMetrunk_monkey: man I made a mistake I overlook something16:10

al8989hello, i was wondering how easy it is to upgrade a video card in ubuntu, i was going to upgrade the onbord geforce 6150 graphics to an 8500gt graphics if it wasn't too hard16:22
nacc_Krapulat: you can of course do that, there would be no support for your php5 based install, and you'll have to follow security updates manually16:23
nacc_Krapulat: a safer approach would be to have a trusty VM and a xenial VM (or whatever isolation method you want to use) and run two services16:23
trunk_monkeyal8989: video card upgrade would be hardware; ubuntu should detect the hardware change. Would probably need to chose proprietary driver after new card is installed though16:24
nacc_Krapulat: ondrej is going to be maintaining his PPA for coinstallable php5 and php7, but there, again, you run into support problems potnetially16:24
al8989ah ok cool i had an pc that just dieed and figured it's working video card into my other pc tht ahs the 6150 graphic as that would be a boot in the graphics capability16:25

EriC^^agx: are you in the live session right now?21:29
Bray90820EriC^^: Prob a bad idea since I will get way to many results but to find all text files I would replace backup with *.txt ?21:29
EriC^^Bray90820: is the dir you're looking for called "backup"21:30

VolundOkay so a few quick questions for a casual ubuntu user moving into the bigger leagues. I've got a Lenovo TS140 here that I'm about to setup with two 8tb drives in a RAID1. It's going to be largely a NAS box via Samba but also I wanna use it for some experiments in learning web design and other minor uses. so NAS, home LAMP, and maybe something weird like running a starbound server on it. MY QUESTIONS: A) Hardware RAID or23:06
VolundUbuntu's LVM? B) anyone have partitioning advice maybe? 8tb is a LOT of space. Or failing partitioning, is there good practice for putting a GIANT SAMBA directory?23:06
k1l_AndroidHacker: its murphys law: if you have a backup, nothing will go wrong23:06
AndroidHackerwhile not true, i get your point23:07
AndroidHackerthank you23:07
VolundI'm trying to ask intelligent questions. :)23:07
bpromptAndroidHacker:   does it work as intended?  yes, is up to the user to decide which one to hose, which one to keep, which to set to root or whatever else, and on that, no partitioning tool can decide for  you23:07
Bray90820EriC^^: What would be the command for that?23:07
k1l_AndroidHacker: i could tell you it was ok last 10 times i used it. but this will not help you if something goes wrong for you :/23:07
AndroidHackerk1l_, i got ya.. thank you for the info23:08
EriC^^Bray90820: strace /root/backup23:08
Bray90820:P that would have been obvious23:08
EriC^^hehe23:09
VolundHallo? @_@23:10
k1l_Volund: raid is not a backup. they say lvm will make everything easy, but it doesnt.23:10
Volundhow is RAID1 not a backup? You have me curious.23:11
k1l_Volund: what about a unclever deleting by "some user"?23:12
Volundoh. well. I'm the only user so if that happens, it's my fault23:12
Volundpoint taken yes. changes to the files are still changes to the files.23:12
Volundit's drive failure I'm currently jumpy about.23:13
Bray90820EriC^^: It cuts off the top of the output because it's to long so is there a way to output it to a file so I can view the entire output?23:13
EriC^^Bray90820: yeah, strace -o /tmp/strace /root/backup23:15
Bray90820EriC^^: It's a really really good thing I checked this because apparently because I did some ssh stuff a while ago the script wasn't running23:18
Bray90820IS there a way to see the long of this chat?23:18

Bray90820EriC^^: No such file or directory23:48
xanguaBingo: transmission uses gtk and qtransmission qt23:49
SenithQtransmission seems to be better for KDE systems. So if you use Kubuntu, use that. If not, use Transmission, the underlying program is the same.23:49
Bingomy install came wid a bit/tor client.. see23:49
