[05:54] good morning [09:02] Good morning. [09:03] errrrrrrr, nope. greetings. (evening in Tokyo) [09:24] cfhowlett: Was it a good day? [09:27] indeed it twas! Had a nice walk from the electronics district back to work ... [09:28] :) [09:28] Is Akiba as fancy as they say? [09:36] it's just short of incredible. you gotta see it to believe it. [11:23] EriC^^: sorry i wake you, he might got into uefi twilight zone lol [11:23] lol, np [11:27] where's daftykins btw? and tj? [11:28] no clue, oerhaks dissapeared also [11:29] hmm [11:29] weird stuff going on [12:02] Hey folks [18:48] EriC^^: What card(s) is monsterjamp got ? Legacy such that no FGLRX driver is available ? [18:52] Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV620/M82 [Mobility Radeon HD 3450/3470] [18:53] ouch, that's a highly legacy card :) [18:53] radeon driver only, for sure [18:53] i have one sitting in a closet. works nicely with radeon [18:54] although mine isn't mobility so eh [18:54] :) [18:54] it's probably hybrid to boot, just to make EriC^^'s day :D [18:54] EriC^^: hi btw :D hope you're well! [18:58] hi daftykins, you too! [18:59] i'm pretty much over my head here [18:59] EriC^^: Kitchen chores .. yeah .. " [Mobility Radeon HD 3450/3470] " no FGLKRX for him . [18:59] wish i knew more about the xorg problems [18:59] i barely know a thing or 2 [18:59] if in doubt purge that sucker from orbit, it's the only way to be sure :) [19:00] EriC^^: is it a hybrid machine or is that the only adapter? which ubuntu? [19:00] he's removed fglrx [19:01] wily, i think it's the only adapter [19:01] maybe try an older kernel? [19:02] double check all fglrx related components got purged, i've seen even the most irrelevant package persist and prevent the radeon open source driver working [19:03] also, sometimes we see those users with linux-image-extra missing for the running kernel - which lacks some of the components too :) [19:03] oh [19:03] so a "dpkg -l | grep fglrx" and a "dpkg -l | grep linux-" [19:03] good idea [19:04] EriC^^: The only version of the kernel for that [Mobility Radeon HD 3450/3470] is in release 12.04.1 .. after .1 the xserver is no longer compatible . [19:05] oh, how did you find that out? [19:06] EriC^^: F its an HD 2x/3x/4x then you are out of luck as AMD announced summer that it is relegating these chipsets to legacy status and will not be developing new drivers for them. Existing restricted drivers from AMD won't work either, because they require X-server v1.12 and Ubuntu 12.10 uses X-server v1.13. [19:06] That's because, starting with Ubuntu 12.04.2, the X-server version was updated to a newer version that is now incompatible with the HD 2x/3x/4x series AMD cards. [19:08] *nod* and in fact now cards up to HD 7xxx are in the second wave of 'legacy' [19:09] EriC^^: Would you like my procedure to purge FGLRX and make sure that radeon installs correctly ? will pastebin it . [19:11] Back to the kitchen .. back here soonest . [19:13] ok [19:25] EriC^^: See what ya think : http://paste.ubuntu.com/15283773/ . [19:27] ok, thank you very much! [19:29] EriC^^: U have had to resort to that procedure more than one to clean up after such a condition you are dealing with to get radeon to install ..make sure the OP removes those bad boot parameters ! [19:29] line 5 is pointless, apart from that looks fine [19:29] ok, i will [19:30] i have a lot to learn about xorg stuff [19:30] radeon's built in to the linux-image-* packages and distributed as a binary package because it's open-source, so dkms isn't used by it [19:30] the comments convey this imo [19:31] sure, but it makes about as much sense as, like, installing nethack-console there :P [19:31] dax: Yeah .. maybe ... I run an old ATI card .. and DKMS is installed on my system .. as said, cheap insureance . [19:32] dax: next you'll be arguing about cowsay being used in there! ;) [19:32] excuse me cowsay is an integral part of any well-running system [19:32] * EriC^^ supplies the instructions with the addition of: cowsay "Brought to you by Bashing-om!" [19:33] lol :D [19:33] one of my servers at work has "exec /usr/games/fortune | /usr/games/cowsay" in /etc/update-motd.d/99-footer [19:33] with the bofh fortune package installed :3 [19:33] daftykins: Yall have no idea how inadaquate I often feel . When I can do, I do . [19:34] Bashing-om: oh i hope i didn't appear rude there, i just wanted to bring a comedy angle to justified commands :D [19:34] *justified vs. unjustified [19:35] daftykins: Oh no .. Took it as a compliment .. just making sure that "compliment" was not over-rated . [19:35] ah :D [19:36] chores, back on a bit . [19:36] yip supermarket run for me, back soon \o [19:38] bye [19:46] OK; doggies all taken care of for the naunce. === sdk_ is now known as sdk
