AscavasaionI have been editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf for ages, and nothing i do makes any difference.    It is as if the xorg.conf file is not even being used.   Some advice?10:32

Endie13hi guys. Lubuntu sometimes freezes. And it seems that PCMan causes the problem. Is there a reliable way to check if it's the reason and are there any common problems with PCMan?18:15
wxlEndie13: why do you say pcman seems to be the problem?18:16
Endie13I notice that the PCMan running is the only constant18:18
wxlEndie13: how much of your resources is it consuming? what are your load averages like? can you still mvoe the mouse?18:18
wxlEndie13: also what version do you have (of lubuntu and pcmanfm), and how much ram/cpu you got? is swap setup? is ANBYTHING else running at the time of freeze?18:19
Endie13I can't move the mouse. The system doesn't response at all. Sometimes I even have to power off the machine.  Chromium is usually running all the time. The system unfreezes quite soon if it's not loaded with other processes. But sometimes I start a virtual machine and the PCMan seems to be the last straw. However problem appears when the vm is off as well. I have lubuntu 15.10 with PCManFM 1.2.3.18:24
Endie132 GB ram. 2 GB swap18:24
wxlEndie13: my first suspicion would be chromium.18:25
Endie131.66 Ghz, 2 cores, 4 threads18:25
Endie13do you suggest I switch to firefox for sometime?18:26
wxlEndie13: no. it's more that browsers tend to consume a lot of resources, especially memory18:34
Endie13I opened two tabs, went through some directories and checked top, pcman takes up to 30% cpu and 31000 RES18:34
wxlEndie13: if you're using plugins (flash, java, even html5), it'll hog up your cpu, too18:34
wxlEndie13: does it remain at 30%?18:35
Endie13no, it immediately drops down when I stop clicking18:35
wxlso it jumps up every time you click on a directory?18:36
wxl!info pcmanfm wily18:36
ubottupcmanfm (source: pcmanfm): extremely fast and lightweight file manager. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.2.3-1.1 (wily), package size 255 kB, installed size 1818 kB18:36
wxl^ do you have 1.2.3 or 1.2.3-1.1? if the former, you should upgrade18:36
wxlalso what sort of file system you using?18:36
wxlEndie13: this is the only bug i can find that mentions freeze or froze https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pcmanfm/+bug/91472518:40
ubottuLaunchpad bug 914725 in pcmanfm (Ubuntu) "pcmanfm crashed with SIGSEGV in _g_utf8_normalize_wc()" [Medium,Confirmed]18:40
wxlall bugs are here btw https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pcmanfm18:41
Endie13is ext418:41
Endie13and 1.2.318:41
wxlso upgrade18:42
Endie13ok. I'll do that18:47
Endie13terminal says I have the newest version18:48
wxlpost the *exact* results of `apt-cache policy pcmanfm | grep -ei '(Installed|Candidate)'`18:51
Endie13no such file or directory18:52
wxlthen you typed something wrong. don't include the ``18:52
Endie13I didn't18:53
Endie13I must say I'm quite new to linux so I might even used a wrong command in order to update18:53
Endie13I used `sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pcmanfm`18:54
wxli don't know why grep -e is failing but it is18:54
wxltry this:18:54
wxlpost the *exact* results of `apt-cache policy pcmanfm | egrep -i '(Installed|Candidate)'`18:54
Endie13empty line :)18:55
wxluhhhhhh18:55
wxlthat makes no sense18:55
wxli just ran it here and get two lines back18:55
wxland even if you have something uninstalled it will still return something18:55
Endie13wait a sec18:56
wxlunless you typed pcmanfm wrong18:56
wxlif the package doesn't exist at all (e.g. foobar), it will return empty18:57
Endie13what's wrestool?19:16
Endie13is it archive manager?19:16
Endie13the system froze again when I open an archive19:16
Endie13RES 712 00019:17
Endie13!info wrestool19:18
ubottuPackage wrestool does not exist in wily19:18
geniiEndie13: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=wrestool&mode=exactfilename&suite=wily&arch=any19:21
Endie13well that wrestool thingy is definitely a (or even the) trouble maker19:26
