pjotter1Hello everybody. What is the default font and fontsize for Xubuntu?01:27
R13oseHow come xfce4 notifications don't do anything when I click show?03:15
xanguaYou're gonna have to be more specific03:17
R13osexangua: when I the notifications that show up on the top right side for me that say "You have mail." or similar, and a show button, and click that, the program doesn't come to the foreground.03:43
xanguaWhat program is showing that notification?03:45
R13osexangua: I installed this from command: xfce4-notifyd03:46
xanguaR13ose: and? What is the program that is showing this mail notification?03:48
R13oseThe desktop notifications that is all I know.  I don't know the exact name of this.03:49
xanguaWell you sure configured some program to show your mail notifications...didn't you?03:50
R13osexangua: nope.  I was using that as an example.03:52
xanguaOk?03:53
R13osedon't notifications show up for you when there is a new message from a program?03:55

luminosohi! if i install 16.04 beta1 will it self-update to final version automatly?19:42
luminoso*automatically19:42
luminosoif i enable unattended updates for example19:42
knomeautomatically, no, but if you run the updates, then you get pretty much as much as you would get with the final 16.04 ISO19:42
luminosook that is very nice19:43
rwd!final19:43
ubottuIf you install a development version of Ubuntu Xenial and keep up with package updates, then you will be upgraded to the official release of 16.04 when it comes out. To make sure, type « sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade » in a terminal.19:43

aicasnhey folks - i'm running xubuntu 14.04.4 LTS. every few minutes the system freezes for about 5 seconds. mouse works, but the keyboard does not. all keystrokes come in after the freeze, however, showing that they were buffered. any ideas on what this is?19:49
well_laid_lawnaicasn:  I would have top running in a terminal to check if something uses all the system for a bit19:52
aicasnnegative19:53
aicasnjust had a freeze and htop reported nothing19:53
aicasnnothing out of the ordinary, that is19:53
well_laid_lawndid htop freeze too ?19:55
aicasncan't say for sure. i'll watch again on the next freeze20:04
aicasnfeels like a read() gets hung20:14
well_laid_lawnyou'll have to find out what is calling read then20:16
aicasnmy suspicion is that it is X because the keyboard it completely hung during the freeze, but the mouse isn't. and even though the mouse is working window dragging does not work20:20
aicasn*work fluidly, that is20:22
well_laid_lawnwhy would X hang the keyboard but not the mouse ?20:23
aicasnno idea :/20:23
well_laid_lawndoesn't seem likely to me20:23
aicasnit's significant in my mind because it rules out the keyboard driver20:23
aicasnif only the kb driver was hanging then mouse click-n-drag would work20:23
aicasnlike i said i only have a couple of seconds each freeze to analyze things, but it's sooo annoying when you're typing --20:25
well_laid_lawnif X was having major issues then the mouse pointer position wouldn't be updated20:25
aicasni considered that, too, but i would think that the mouse handler would have a dedicated thread20:26
aicasnalso, can you think of anything that  1) affects keyboard input, 2) affects x responsiveness (like draggin), 3) does NOT affect mouse cursor movement ??20:26
aicasni don't know of anything that would exactly match that, so right now i'm leaning towards X20:27
well_laid_lawnnot offhand20:27
aicasnif it continues and i cannot narrow down the problem i suppose i would take that as an indication that this Xorg has a bug and maybe i should move off of LTS20:28
aicasnthough i don't particularly want to  O.O20:28
well_laid_lawnI would be inclined to think more of an input/output issue20:28
well_laid_lawnsomething is using resources and slowing the visual update20:29
well_laid_lawnenough free memory? swapping ?20:29
aicasnmouse cursor doesn't even stutter. mem usage < 50%. no swapping20:30
well_laid_lawnwhat programs are open when the delay happens ?20:36
aicasnxorg->xfce-> lots of terminals, firefox, htop20:37
aicasnthis is a laptop so i'm not running a top of services in the bg20:37
aicasn*ton20:37
aicasnscratch ff. freeze happens w/o it20:38
well_laid_lawndoes it happen with just one terminal open ?20:40
aicasnhah. i don't think i've ever had just one terminal open20:41
aicasnwhy do you think that terminal might have something to do with it?20:41
well_laid_lawnany remote filesystems mounted and being indexed or dropbox or similar ?20:41
aicasnnegative20:42
well_laid_lawnjusta guess20:42
well_laid_lawnmaybe try   dmesg -w   ina terminal and see if the kernel shows something20:43
aicasn -w?20:44
well_laid_lawnit's kinda like tail -f , keeps showing dmesg output as it happens20:45
aicasnnegative. invalid option20:45
aicasndmesg --version     dmesg from util-linux 2.20.120:45
well_laid_lawntry   tail -f /var/log/kernel.log20:46
loptaDoes Xubuntu ship with something that will show me the CPU temperature?20:47
well_laid_lawnlopta:  you can install the sensors package20:47
well_laid_lawn!sensors20:47
ubottuTo access CPU temperature sensors and detect fan speeds, install the lm-sensors package. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SensorInstallHowto for installation and usage instructions.20:47
well_laid_lawnoops lm-sensors package20:47
aicasnkern.log has nothing for the past 3 hours and i have had several freezes since then20:49
well_laid_lawnk20:49
well_laid_lawnnothing in the X log ?20:49
loptaI think this poor computer needs help.20:50
aicasnthe system doesn't seem to be taking note of it. kinda leans in the direction of my read() theory. technically blocking IO is behaving when it blocks20:50
aicasnnope20:50
well_laid_lawndoes the lag happen when you're in a tty ?20:52
aicasni could not make it happen. i typed out all the song lyrics i could think of in vim and it didn't stutter once20:52
well_laid_lawnok20:53
aicasnstrange isn't it?20:54
well_laid_lawnyou could try using a window manager instead of xfce as a test just to see if it is X or an application that gets started20:54
aicasnthat's an idea. i wonder if awesomewm has a decent deb repo20:55
well_laid_lawn!awesomewm20:55
aicasnlast i tried it on linux the packaged version was soooooo out-of-date and buggy  :/20:55
well_laid_lawnI'd use the git repo20:56
aicasnyeah if i were going to stick with it i would for sure20:56
aicasnactually it might be better for a laptop than a point-and-shoot wm20:56
well_laid_lawnsince you use lots of terminals a tiler might be appropriate20:57

aicasnhah. my 4 pm appt canceled so i have an hour to play with it :D20:58
well_laid_lawnthat's lucky21:01
aicasnvery. and it's friday21:01
well_laid_lawnawesome takes some setting up - there are simpler wm's21:01
aicasnfor sure. i like awesome though21:02
aicasnit's my pick of the tilling wms21:02
well_laid_lawnk21:02
aicasnand as i said i may stick with it on this laptop. i'm very pro-keyboard and the whole trackpad, quasi-mouse thing is a pain sometimes21:03
well_laid_lawnthat's why I use a tiler21:04
aicasnwhich one do you use?21:05
well_laid_lawnI made my own21:05
aicasnyou wrote yourself a tilling wm?21:06
aicasnnothing in repos that would have worked for you i guess ??21:06
well_laid_lawnI'm just fussy21:06
aicasnlol. k21:06
aicasnstraight to xlib or with a toolkit?21:07
aicasnwell.. x1121:07
well_laid_lawnjust using the xlibs21:08
aicasnthat's quite a time investment. i hope it works for you21:08
well_laid_lawnworks great for me21:08
well_laid_lawnxlib is pretty straightforward once you know it21:09
aicasngrrrr.. 14.04 doesn't have cmake >= 321:25

puckzHi all! My Software Updater says "Failed to download repository information - Check your Internet connection." Of course I'm connected to the net. Could someone guide me, please? I'm using Xubuntu 14.04. Thanks in advance!21:44
knomepuckz, you might want to check if changing your repository to the main server helps (software & updates under settings manager)21:54
puckzknome Thanks. Had the Swedish servers, already changed to the main server without success. I haven't installed anything lately and haven't added any repos.21:56
knomedid you update the repositories after changing?21:56
puckzSome update with a huge download of files was done. Let me do it again.21:57
knomeafter that, you could try running "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" on the terminal and see if it gives you further information21:57
puckzHmm. I get a message "Failed to download repository information" from the main servers. The detailed info is as follows22:01

knomeright... so that's a PPA22:02
knomeand it's also what fails22:02
puckzI guess it's some problems with the repo http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/dists/stable/Release, right? I'll try to disable that and then see  if it works OK22:04
