ksteffensenCatching up on not having installed Edubuntu in a few years and reading documentation, etc.  I read one post on Jonathan Carter's blog that had concern about LTSP with Wayland (several years ago).  Reading on Ubuntu pages, Wayland is dead for Ubuntu, and Mir is the way of the future.  Any impact on LTSP/Edubuntu from switch to Mir?17:54
highvoltagewon't work so well for ltsp clients but should be fine for ltsp fat clients18:11
ksteffensenthanks. at least it's only half a problem, and not fully broken18:14
ksteffensenHi Jonathan.  I didn't go down everyone's nicknames trying to figure out which one was you.  :)18:15

alkisgksteffensen: why do you think that wayland is dead for ubuntu?21:07
alkisgI believe debian will support it, and as an ltsp developer I'll care more about debian compatibility than mir...21:08
ksteffensenLet me find the page.21:08
ksteffensentrue21:08
alkisgIf that's the case, maybe ltsp will support wayland but not mir21:08
ksteffensenhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Wayland21:08
ksteffensenAt the top of the page, it says, "Please note that we are no longer considering Wayland, but instead we will be moving to Mir."21:09
alkisgAnd at the bottom it says: last edited 2013-08-0521:09
ksteffensenAh.  Good point.21:09
alkisgAt that time they were thinking that mir would be the default for desktop in 14.0421:09
alkisgThat's still too far from the reality and we're in 16.0421:09
ksteffensenAh.  Makes sense.21:09
alkisgIf (when?) debian supports wayland, i'm pretty sure it'll run in ubuntu as well21:10
ksteffensenCool.  Any timeline for debian supporting it?21:11
alkisgAs for thin clients etc, the general trend is to go with netbooted ltsp fat clients, they run *much* more smoothly21:11
alkisgFor wayland? No idea, you could ask in #debian or #wayland or so21:11
ksteffensenwill do21:11
ksteffensenYeah, I've been catching up after not installing Edubuntu since 12.04.  Started reading today.  Did a basic install, but haven't had time to try a fat client yet.21:12
alkisgEdubuntu won't be shipping 16.04, but LTSP runs fine in plain Ubuntu 16.04 with gnome-flashback21:13
ksteffensenAll of my previous experience has been with thin clients.  looking forward to trying a fat client21:13
ksteffensenThanks.21:13
alkisgThis is the best how-to, if it fits your needs:21:13
alkisgltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp21:13
ksteffensenThanks.  I'll give that a try, too.21:15

ksteffensenI like your catch-22 of DNS not working because of dnsmasq preventing other DNS servers from starting.21:17
