ali1234okay it's installing00:34
ali1234it did in fact ask me for a product key00:34
ali1234but it allows you to skip it. no idea what will happen on first boot00:34
daftykinsyeah but i said it doesn't need one00:36
daftykinswhich is the same00:36
ali1234"Hi"00:41
daftykinswe're glad that you're here00:41
daftykinswe're getting this ready for you!00:41
ali1234i wasn't forced to create a microsoft account00:41
ali1234and i was able to turn off all the tracking... or at least some of it00:42
daftykinsno, but you have to use one with insider preview builds00:42
daftykinsnope00:42
ali1234oh, what do i have then?00:42
daftykinsin terms of?00:42
ali1234in terms of what i jus downloaded and installed?00:42
daftykinslikely without an MS account signed into, it won't allow further insider updates from that point00:43
daftykinsbut that might not be necessary for a quick play00:43
ali1234Win10_1511_1_English_x64.iso00:43
daftykinscmd would state the build #00:46
ali1234well this is a huge improvement over 800:46
ali1234or maybe not00:46
ali12341058600:47
daftykinsyep so that's the same as is out right now00:47
daftykinstoo old00:47
ali1234lots of updates tho00:49
ali1234oh here's a button to get insider updates00:49
daftykinsmmm not really ;D you'll need to sign into an MS account instead, then change windows update to the fast ring in start -> settings -> update00:49
ali1234now it is asking me to sign in00:50
ali1234keyboard has stopped working00:51
ali1234oh, there's just a 30 second delay on typing00:51
daftykinsclassic vbox ;D00:51
daftykinssounds like you gave it quite few resources perhaps00:52
ali1234first forced reboot00:52
ali1234i gave it 4GB00:52
daftykinsprocessors00:53
ali12341?00:53
daftykinsouch00:53
ali1234okay i appear to be all set for the fast track00:54
daftykinsmmm i got that far then it just didn't appear00:55
daftykinsnot even after 10586's updates were on00:55
ali1234did you enable developer mode?00:55
daftykinsthat's not necessary to get newer builds on the fast track00:55
ali1234but apparently it is necessary for the bash00:56
ali1234according to a blog i read00:56
daftykinsas mentioned that's not even available yet00:56
ali1234http://www.hanselman.com/blog/DevelopersCanRunBashShellAndUsermodeUbuntuLinuxBinariesOnWindows10.aspx00:57
ali1234i wonder what "adding the feature" means00:57
daftykinscould be programs and features00:58
diddledanright-click start, choose programs and features, select add features to windows00:58
daftykinssuper+X -> control panel00:58
daftykinsoh yeah it's there00:58
ali1234wow it's like a proper start menu00:58
daftykinswith all the real things IT folk really want to get to00:59
daftykins\o/00:59
diddledanlike Netflix :-p00:59
ali1234that's actually pretty nice. does 8 have that?00:59
daftykinsmmm possibly, i forget00:59
daftykins8's dead as far as i'm concerned :D00:59
diddledan8 and 8.1 have a start screen rather than menu01:00
ali1234still has a thing in the bottom left though doesnt it?01:00
daftykinsit's a fake, but you get the same by right clicking i think01:00
daftykinswhich is also how you get it on 1001:00
diddledanit's similar to the 10 menu but it's full-screen and the icons are under a down-arrow on that screen01:00
ali1234i specifically mean the right click thing01:01
ali1234the actually useful start menu01:01
diddledanaah, 8 has similar01:01
diddledanthat goes back to vista but it's grown in features01:01
ali1234so what do insider updates look like when they are available?01:02
ali1234they appear in the updates bit and say "insider update 12345"?01:02
daftykinsthe list of what it's downloading shows a newer build coming down01:02
daftykinsand you get to watch 3GB get downloaded01:03
diddledanI've been running 10 for two years this September (on and off) so it's been a long while since I last played with an 8/8.101:03
ali1234"We speak gmail" lol01:03
diddledanthe insider update behaves like an upgrade install similar to the initial install01:04
ali1234let's see if they can handle my 4GB of emails01:04
daftykinshe didn't do one though :D01:04
daftykinsthat update process is gonna crawl with 1 CPU, i'd give it 2 or 4 perhaps01:04
ali1234my computer is busy doing other stuff anyway01:04
diddledanI've not had any success running 10 in vbox - it just crawls no matter what resources I assign01:05
ali1234er...01:06
ali1234why does the email client go really thin when i maximize it?01:06
diddledanbug01:06
diddledan?01:06
ali1234oh i see01:07
ali1234you click an email and then you see it at the side01:07
ali1234it's like android01:07
ali1234except on a computer01:07
ali1234awful.01:07
daftykinsgotta be honest, i wouldn't go back to the days of a mail client01:07
daftykinsmuch less the OS stock one01:08
ali1234as usual, conversations are not threaded properly01:08
ali1234i got inbox soup01:08
ali1234"We are adding some new features to windows"01:09
ali1234"this could take a few minutes"01:09
diddledan\o/01:09
ali1234sounds promising01:09
ali1234hmm this email client... you can't just scroll down and read a whole conversation. it's pretty bad01:11
ali1234i can see how hard they want to make convergence01:11
ali1234this is a tablet app running in a window01:11
ali1234second forced reboot01:12
ali1234"working on updates"01:14
ali1234once i had a windows 7 stuck on this screen for four hours01:14
ali1234that was reasonably quick01:14
daftykinsyeah i don't make much money doing 10 installs that's for sure ;)01:14
ali1234oh, it just rebooted back to this screen01:14
ali1234fully updated and no ubuntus01:26
ali1234guess i'll just try again in a week or so01:26
ali1234http://imgur.com/IV9xGMN01:26
ali1234i wonder what /dev/adss is?01:26
ali1234and /dev/fb001:27
ali1234still think it's command line only?01:27
diddledanfb0 is an interesting one01:28
diddledanadss was the name of the dll for the android subsystem that the lxss (Linux subsystem) was partly based-upon01:28
ali1234exactly01:29
diddledaninteresting. fork (the big bugbear of Cygwin implementation devs apparently) is gonna be handled by threads01:50

OliI think you're getting a little ahead of yourselves here. Actions to date suggest they're just trying to stop Windows-users who need to develop for Linux servers (websites/etc) from moving to Linux. I'll happily eat those words when they show off MS Office Linux Edition, but they still make considerable money off enterprise Windows subscriptions so I don't think that'll be any time soon.07:10

daftykinshe'd asked about having his docs available on the go, but given the # of laptops and considering things like dropbox are inappropriate due to the biz content, i eventually just ran it in-house with what we already had22:13
diddledanI like VPN networks22:13
daftykinsnow his laptops can just connect home to Guernsey from wherever he is22:13
daftykinsnetwork networks ;D22:13
diddledanas in a proper vpn where it's private and not "commercial tunnel to give you a different public IP"22:13
diddledanI want a VPN to give me access to multiple devices that I normally can't when I'm out-n-about. I don't care for the "circumvent the cops' snoopers" tunnels22:15

diddledanaye22:15
diddledane.g. all our servers have ssh running on a private IP only which is exposed via openvpn. so we need to connect to the vpn and then we're a citizen on our internal net22:16
diddledanalthough technically that's not "we" anymore now that I'm just a contractor on an adhoc basis, but I do still have access to their entire setup22:17
