foormea | hi. what kernel does ubuntustudio 15.10 use by default? generic? lowlatency? realtime? what about 16.04? | 13:40 |
---|---|---|
foormea | actually, let me phrase this differently. i'm on kubuntu 16.04, recording guitar with audacity. i had pretty bad results with generic kernel: delay, sometimes recording would stop or not even start with an empty track... so i switch to lowlatency kernel. it seems better, but it's still not perfect | 13:42 |
zequence | There's no -rt kernel in the archive. Ubuntu Studio uses linux-lowlatency, and we are its silent maintainers, so to speak | 13:42 |
zequence | I would use something other than audacity for recording | 13:43 |
zequence | ardour, or qtractor | 13:43 |
zequence | Audacity is ok for simple recording, but not for tracking | 13:43 |
zequence | I would suggest you to use ardour instead | 13:44 |
zequence | ..with jack | 13:44 |
zequence | !proaudio | 13:44 |
ubottu | For information on professional audio tools in Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro | 13:44 |
foormea | thanks zequence | 13:47 |
foormea | i'll read on that. i hope i can easily import all my stuff into ardour! and i hope it won't be too complicated to learn | 13:47 |
zequence | foormea: It's quite easy to import audio files into ardour, so that's not a big issue | 13:48 |
zequence | You get the benefit of a full blown DAW, with tempo tracks, live processing, automation, etc | 13:49 |
foormea | cool, thanks for the tip! | 13:49 |
zequence | foormea: I'm sure there's plenty of help to be found online for ardour. There's a floss manual, and surely you can find stuff on youtube as well | 13:50 |
zequence | foormea: Just one thing though | 13:51 |
foormea | yeah? | 13:51 |
foormea | uh i'm seeing htis: http://ardour.org/download.html | 13:51 |
zequence | foormea: If you are not on UBuntu Studio, you don't have realtime privilege. Install ubuntustudio-controls, and set that up for your user | 13:51 |
foormea | seilence after 10mn if i download the binary, otherwise i'll need to compile from source? | 13:51 |
foormea | oh i thought it was just a matter of switching the running kernel | 13:51 |
zequence | foormea: It's in the archive. Install it with whatever installation tool you usually use | 13:51 |
foormea | yep | 13:52 |
zequence | no need to download from the ardour site | 13:52 |
foormea | zequence: what do you mean is in the archive? i'm just wondering, the version of ardour that comes from the ubuntu repo isn't "locked" at 10mn of usage is it? | 13:52 |
zequence | There might be ardour and ardour3. It's a bit confusing, but the latest one is the one you want | 13:52 |
foormea | yeah. ardour, which isntalls ver4 i think | 13:53 |
foormea | :) | 13:53 |
zequence | It's not locked at all. It's free software | 13:53 |
zequence | sudo apt-get install ardour | 13:53 |
foormea | Version: 1:4.6~dfsg-1 | 13:53 |
zequence | foormea: Are you on xenial? | 13:54 |
foormea | yep. i'm fairly proficient with ubuntu and linux in general :) i was just reading on ardour vs qtracker and saw that ardour page which i find really, really weird | 13:54 |
foormea | yep | 13:54 |
zequence | Ok, so that's the one then | 13:54 |
zequence | ardour has a business model, but it's still free software | 13:55 |
zequence | Well, it's one or two guys getting paid | 13:55 |
foormea | i see | 13:55 |
zequence | You can find them on #ardour. Very helpful people, and very passionate | 13:55 |
foormea | cool! thanks | 13:55 |
foormea | anyway, zequence, what's your involvement with ubuntu studio? you seemed to say you're involved in kernel maintenance?? | 14:42 |
