BluesKajlotuspsychje,  cool , fast eh/17:21
lotuspsychjerocknroll :p17:21
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: i had to bypass a nasty old bug though..17:22
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/156611617:22
ubot5`Launchpad bug 1566116 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "Ubi-language crashed with exit code 141" [Undecided,New]17:22
BluesKajI us an EVO 850 ssd on this old pc and it brought it to life17:22
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: placed the evo one on my desktop upstairs, the pro in netbook :p17:23
BluesKajyeah , thinking of another evo 850 for the laptop then using the 1TB hdd as an outboard medai drive17:25
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: good idea, i payed 94 euro now for the 128gig 850 pro17:25
BluesKajok you guys must pay a lot of vat taxes there., am i correct ?  Ours is 13%17:27
lotuspsychje21%17:28
BluesKajvat = value added tax on consumer goods17:28
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: but the evo is also cheaper here17:28
BluesKajI paid $125 CDN for the evo 850 256 GB ssd including taxes17:30
lotuspsychjenice one17:30
BluesKajamazon17:30
lotuspsychjethe pro is bit more expensive, but samsung gives 10 years warranty17:31
BluesKajok , that's a nice warranty17:31
lotuspsychjeyeah17:31
BluesKajok lots of stuff to do toady ...later17:37
BluesKajhey Bashing-om18:30
Bashing-omBluesKaj: Hello, how it be with your world ?18:30
BluesKajok , was checking s few old hdds, but they're toast ..was hoping for a better result, but they have to go the electronics recycler18:35
BluesKajone isn't so old , a 3yr old WD 1TB .,..very disappointed with that one18:37
BluesKajhow about you Bashing-om?18:37
Bashing-omBout the same. Got a WD drive that is problematic and needs replacing .. Got nothing I am comfortable with on hand . Sure a good time to go SSD !18:39
daftykins:D18:40
daftykinsnone of them last these days, all brands are quite disappointing18:40
BluesKajyea lotus and I were discussing that earlier...thinking of a ssd for my lenovo g500 laptop and using the 1TB hdd from it as an outboard media drive18:41
daftykinsthat'd be the best combo for sure18:42
BluesKajbut like you say that drive may not last either :/18:42
daftykinsjust the other day i had a laptop in with a mechanical drive for the first time - and i had to remember to be gentle with it18:42
daftykinseverything else being solid state now you can just fling laptops around :D18:42
BluesKajyeah the i3 intel cpu as an enbtry level processer is really fast for ordinary computing , adding a ssd to the mix would speed it up even more18:45
daftykinsi'd actually been quite surprised recently since i got that really cheap i5 in, the jump up from even a 4th generation haswell i3 to a haswell or newer i5 is huge18:46
daftykinsi go for i3 at the office level though18:46
BluesKajof course I'm used to this old desktop amd 5200+ so any thing in the 5 yrs or so is problya lot faster18:46
BluesKajsdd really helps it tho18:47
daftykins:D18:48
daftykinsoh definitely, they've helped me stave off the desire to upgrade this desktop since i built it in 200718:48
daftykinsstill running one of the first best SSDs, the intel X25-M G2 160GB18:48
* BluesKaj nods18:48
daftykinsstill have to giggle a bit that i've just ordered 32GB RAM... i'm all too aware of when that was the hard disk size ;)18:50
BluesKajwifey bought me an evo 850 256GB for Christmas so I mounted it in this desktop...new life into an old horse :-)18:51
daftykins:D18:51
daftykinshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/zjuf1qlz9ocecks/deskie.JPG?dl=018:52
BluesKaj32GB seems like a lot to me18:52
daftykinsi've picked one of the new M.2 PCI-Express connected NVMe SSDs for my new desktop18:52
BluesKajram that is18:52
daftykinssounds it, but when you look at the price - and that i virtualise a lot, it'll be great18:52
BluesKajpci eh , cool  ..bleeding edge18:53
daftykinsi want to try and last a good few years like with this PC, for this next one - so going all out makes sense to me :D18:53
Bashing-omMe too ! That is the SSD I have my eye on : *****)Samsung 850 EVO 250GB $84.58 >> $71.00 Newegg But out of stock .18:53
BluesKajoh a virtualizer, understood18:54
daftykinsmmm i would personally avoid the EVOs since they use TLC which won't have the same endurance, thus life span, as MLC18:54
BluesKajat 71 bucks it looks like a loss leader18:55
Bashing-omdaftykins: Noted ! Was not that aware .18:55
BluesKajTLC.MLC ? uhm ?18:55
daftykinsit relates to the design of the NAND memory chips, they reduce cost by storing more bits per cell - which due to the way they're built, can then be harder to read back after some time goes by with TLC (triple level cell) versus MLC (multi level cell) which is a confusing one given triple and multi sound the same :D18:57
daftykinsit's how the industry has chosen to name them though. the samsung 840 EVOs had a big ongoing firmware blunder, which is still evident, where over time of filling up the drive the performance would drop off to a tiny fraction of 1% that of new, as it was becoming harder and harder to read the data18:58
daftykinsthey 'solved' this, or rather cheated it in the end by having the firmware go over the drive during idle times and rewrite everything to ensure the charge levels are strong enough to be read18:58
daftykinsi don't expect the 850 generation suffers from this so much, but it's probably still present18:59
BluesKajI probly won't notice since my cpu is somewhat older and slower than the modern ones anyway19:04
daftykinsoh we're talking dramatic performance reduction19:06
BluesKajwhen this pc craps out I'll just get a raspi with all the trimmings and use that as my htpc19:07
daftykinshttp://www.anandtech.com/show/8617/samsung-releases-firmware-update-to-fix-the-ssd-840-evo-read-performance-bug19:07
daftykins:D i'd recommend the Amazon FireTV!19:07
lotuspsychjehi daftykins19:07
lotuspsychjehi Bashing-om19:07
daftykins\o hi sir19:07
daftykinslotuspsychje: look what's on the way - https://www.dropbox.com/s/zjuf1qlz9ocecks/deskie.JPG?dl=019:07
lotuspsychjelets c19:07
lotuspsychjedaftykins: holy smokin oO19:08
lotuspsychjenice material mate19:09
daftykins^_^19:09
daftykinsfinally pushing the boat out after 9 years with the Q660019:09
BluesKajnot ready for an android box yet , my internet connection is only 6mb so i9t barely handles netflix at ild std def resolution19:09
BluesKajthe std def19:10
daftykinsah, well i use mine to run Kodi to play my local content from my file server19:11
daftykinsjust earlier today i was putting one in my clients' childs bedroom for doing the same also, where we have over 1,000 films from DVDs all ripped onto a file server19:11
daftykinsall nicely disclessly available :D19:11
lotuspsychje Model=Samsung SSD 850 PRO 128GB, FwRev=EXM02B6Q, SerialNo=S24ZNXAGC04031J19:12
BluesKajI'm in the boonies so there's only one OTA TV channel in my area, so we're stuck with either sattv or cable19:13
BluesKajI could switch to faster fibre internet and drop the sattv , but wife needs convincing first19:15
daftykinsBluesKaj: what's the damage on getting fiber in? is it already at your door?19:16
daftykinssorry damage being a British colloquialism for cost :D19:16
BluesKajit's the distribution box in my front yard , on the easement portion of the property , so it's copper wire from there19:17
BluesKajbut fibre to the dist box19:17
daftykinsoh so you might get VDSL tech like i have here?19:18
BluesKajit would be about 85bucks cdn for 50mb/mos19:19
daftykinshow does that compare to the current satellite service?19:20
BluesKajdunno what the data cap is tho19:20
lotuspsychjei got 50mbit vdsl2 + phone+tv for 39 euros19:21
lotuspsychjeno data limits19:21
BluesKajsat service is 60/mos for my packages which is quite minimal , no sports or US news packs etc,but it suffices for our tv habits19:22
BluesKajdropped cnn and those other US news channels plus the sports chans were very expensive19:23
daftykinsi'll bet!19:24
BluesKajour total phone, internet and tv is 125/mos , so we basically cut it in half 18mos ago by switcjing internet and phone provders and those tv chans19:25
daftykinsi don't even use a TV service here19:27
daftykinsthankfully right now i don't have to pay the BBC if i don't watch their live TV services19:28
BluesKajwe're retired on fixed income and tired of being fleeced here19:28
BluesKajdaftykins, cool free tv is the way to go :-)19:29
daftykinsyou can use their catchup services, i don't really tend to do that either19:29
daftykinssometimes i used to check out the local BBC news but hearing about a cow falling over in a field got old ;)19:30
BluesKajLOL19:31
BluesKaj:-019:32
lotuspsychjebbl guys, movietimes :p19:33
lotuspsychjehave a nice one19:33
BluesKajyeah , later guys , going shopping..take care19:33

ubot5`Google recently deprecated 32-bit Chrome, which causes errors on 64-bit multiarch Ubuntu systems. To fix this, run:   sudo sed -i 's/deb http/deb [arch=amd64] http/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list /opt/google/chrome/cron/google-chrome23:51
