ubottuShibe: The Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack00:14
k1lyou could use the 4.2 kernel and xorg stack from 15.10 and test it00:15
Shibek1l: i'm 90% sure that'd break nvidia and probably a lot more stuff00:16
Shibeupgrading xorg and installing libwayland-egl1-mesa00:16
k1lShibe: in general it doesnt break stuff. since that is what 14.04.4 ships on the isos now.00:17
Shibebut i'm on a ubuntu derivative thats slightly behind00:17
k1lShibe: but it sounds like you made a lot of custom kernel, xorg and driver stuff anyway so i am not sure that is not caused by this00:17
Shibek1l: the only thing that's custom is the kernel and the nvidia driver is newer than the repos provide00:17
k1lmeaning mint or others?00:18
Shibeyup00:18
Shibebut getting mint help is difficult so I come here00:18
k1lwell, mint blocks updates and stuff anyways. so i really suggest asking them00:18
Shibeok00:18
PiciThey have their own repos these days, don't they?00:18
ShibePici: yes but they still use ubuntu ones for most stuff00:18
tewardShibe: but they make a lot of revisions that make it Not Ubuntu00:19
Shibeok00:19
tewardand we don't provide support for Mint at all here00:19
k1lPici: partial. so they need to block ubuntu repos for stuff like kernel etc to not break their own packages.00:19

Would i just, apt-get install linux-image-4.4.0-15-generic and then it'll install the rest of the stuff with 4.4.0-15 ?00:59

stacks88Has anyone here successfully been able upgrade the kernel from apt without rebooting? I run ubutun server 14.04 and ive got people that are connected to my servers and it is inconvenient to reboot them for a kernel upgrade01:03
stacks88ive heard it has somethign to do with ksplice01:03
Bashing-omstacks88: Best I recall, one gets that ability on 16.04 .01:04
k1lmost distros did keep that for their paying customers. but "soon" we should get that for everyone.01:05
stacks88k1l: wow interesting, i didnt realize that. i hope we can get that too. By soon do you mean 16.04 ? what do you think it will involve.. ? Will it automatically patch the kernel live without rebooting, or will we have to still do ksplice or something like that still01:06
k1lstacks88: i didnt look up on what kernel it should be included. i only know there was something in the makings.01:08
stacks88k1l: I see. In the mean time, have you ever accomplished it? Or do you know if it's difficult on 14.04 or should i just google for some guide01:08
k1lon servers? personally i schedule a reboot to times of low usage.01:09
naccand even with kpatch/ksplice/etc, there are going to be some updates that will require reboots eventually01:09
naccaiui01:09
stacks88yeah im sure. it just sucks cause ive got people whos connections will get dropped and i just hate to have to do that to them. so im hoping in 16.04 it will minimize reboots or disconnects stemming from reboots01:10
nacchttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kpatch01:11

From what you have said I am afraid that you might change all of the systems overnight amd without a way to roll back if things aren't working properly. ratraceNene1: it's always a newer version. Even if just ubuntu's revision number.17:45
Jakey3ratrace,  is this article correct17:47
Jakey3https://www.linode.com/docs/tools-reference/tools/limiting-access-with-sftp-jails-on-debian-and-ubuntu17:47
Jakey3i still cannot work out what the issue is17:47
ratraceJakey3: what are the symptoms?17:47
Jakey3i followed the article instead of only accessing the users folder the opposite happens17:48
Jakey3it goes directly to the root folder17:49
Jakey3and i cant access the user home directory17:49
Nene1ratrace:ok... i think apt-get upgrade doesn't install new pkgs... it only updates the already installed pkgs...17:49
Nene1doen't it??17:49
ratraceJakey3: the article is wrong in one tiny detail, the user home folder should be owned by root:user and modded 75017:50
Nene1apt-get upgrade actually installs newer versions of the packages you have17:50

Vuurdraak_Hi. all, i have installed nVidia's binairy driver from their website, purged all previous installed drivers to make the new driver able to install the kernel module, booting ubuntu normaly makes it go in to an infinity login loop, how ever booting from recovery mode , to resume normal boot, makes the os boot normaly with the new driver running perfectly, what can cause that a normal boot doesnt work, but through recovery mode it boots like a charm ?17:53

Jordan_UVuurdraak_: Why did you install from their website instead of using the driver in the default repositories?17:54
ratraceJakey3: and what does `id ftpuser` say?17:54
Vuurdraak_because i wanted to check on a new feature for streaming nly proovided by drivers higher then  the ubuntu driver17:55
Jakey3ratrace, can you explain what you mean17:55
Vuurdraak_i know i can uninstall and go back to the ubuntu suplied drivers17:55
ratraceJakey3: the output of command `id ftpuser`17:55
Vuurdraak_but i want to understand why the current driver can boot through recovery but not normaly17:56
yraygot it to work, thanks :  http://www.upubuntu.com/2011/11/is-your-laptop-touchpad-not-working.html17:56

Vuurdraak_or changed the kernel17:58
Vuurdraak_i just installed the driver with the nvidia script/driver, not much more17:58
Jordan_UVuurdraak_: That's one of the things you need to do if you're doing things manually. With modesetting enabled nouveau kicks in and can't be replaced by Nvidia's binary blob.17:58
Vuurdraak_mm okay17:59
Vuurdraak_it kicks in even though the driver is already installed ?17:59
Jordan_UVuurdraak_: Yes, it kicks in long before X starts.18:00
Jordan_UVuurdraak_: The pacakges from the repositories take care of adding "nomodeset" for you.18:00
Vuurdraak_ah18:00
Vuurdraak_so  need to blacklist noveu i guess regardless if it is running18:01

Redbeardtwouldn't work when booting into*18:18
glumpyHow do I add my user to the group cdrom? And what are the risks?18:18
k1lRedbeardt: depends on the exact hardware.18:18
RedbeardtThe card is an Intel 7265-AC18:19
k1lRedbeardt: some drivers ubuntu is not allowed to install but running in live-mode, license wise18:19
ratraceJakey3: oh... just to make sure... your client operating system is Ubuntu, correct? Server too?18:19
Vuurdraak_Redbeardt, i think if the card is supported it will automaticly be detected and run18:19
RedbeardtI'm new to Linux.. completely new.. so I'm stumbling about trying to get this rolling18:19
Vuurdraak_regardless if u boot from a cd or usb or hd18:19
RedbeardtAllegedly it's supported. I even found .ucode files in /lib/firmware for it, which is.. good.. allegedly.18:20
RedbeardtBut it says it's blocked by hardware switch18:20
Jordan_Uk1l: Are you really trying to say that there are drivers which are enabled in the live session that will not be installed?18:20
Redbeardtand FN-F2 isnt helping!18:20
Jakey3ratrace, yes, i was able to login on client18:21
Jakey3ubuntu 14.0418:21

Vuurdraak_maybe more senior members know what it means18:22
Redbeardtshouldn't it be one or the other?18:22
ratraceJakey3: and make sure you switch from password based root login to pubkey login. root is okay for pubkey if you really must, as long as it's pubkey and passwords are blocked for root.18:22
Vuurdraak_you should be able to use multiple cards at the same time18:22
k1lRedbeardt: put the output of "rfkill list" and "lspci" into paste.ubuntu.com and show the link here18:23

Jakey3ratrace, ok np18:32
ratraceJakey3: but if you wanna know, I always chmod 750 the user home dirs, and in case of root owned home dirs, then it has to be root:user18:32
Vuurdraak_Redbeardt, or: sudo rfkill unblock all18:32
Jakey3ratrace, thanks for the info18:33

grapsHi18:34
RedbeardtI guess ill just keepdigging around on google.. argh18:34

grapsHas anybody in here downloaded and run Chromium successfully in Ubuntu 14.04.1 ?18:36
ratraceJakey3: no but because if you chmod them 750, that's rwx for owner and rx for group, nothing for others. if you root:root own such a dir then the user wouldn't be able to access own home dir.18:36
Redbeardtit's an ultrabook so it doesn't have ethernet. I'm assuming that command downloads?18:36

Jakey3ratrace, i see18:37
Vuurdraak_im not sure if it's on the cd/dvd18:37
ratraceJakey3: so you'd have to put the webserver into user's group in order to acess files in their home dir. PHP, for example, can be configured with FPM to run as that user, so no changes there. Other app containers like Python or Ruby ones too.18:37
Vuurdraak_you can try18:37

temmi_hooso, my machine has been running the do-release-upgrade for four hours now, most of it spent after it asked if i wanted it to just automatically do the reboot thing until all is ready20:09
temmi_hoonow it apparently is rebooting every now and then as at times it responds to reverse ssh and at times it does not20:10
temmi_hooi'm hoping it is not expecting anybody to give input from console...20:10
witm55@temmi_hoo 4 hours? that sound's fishy to me...20:16

temmi_hooi also like very much that the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UtopicUpgrades looks like it's very simple and the fun begins at when the do-release-upgrade starts asking questions20:18
temmi_hoodo you want this or that or that or... i'd love to see some of that discussed in the linked text20:18
k1l_temmi_hoo: what is the exact issue?20:18

witm55Well, first rule of upgrading: You _DO_ have a backup of your important data, right?20:21
k1l_https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades#Upgrading   that is pretty straight forward20:22
temmi_hooalso, in the part where the docs say 'To begin the upgrade, make sure you have a sources.list like the following, with CODENAME being your release, e.g. quantal.' i'd really really really love if instead of CODENAME i could put a version number string instead of having to find out what cartoon character maps to which version number :)20:23
temmi_hoowitm55: yes i do20:23

k1l_you are on trusty.20:25
k1l_and you need to put trusty in there.20:25
temmi_hooso how do i find out what codename is for 15? and then 16 when that is released?20:25
k1l_temmi_hoo: you dont need to change that20:26
k1l_temmi_hoo: you just change the repo url. the CODENAME stays the same20:27
temmi_hoook good. so what does the CODENAME signify then?20:27
k1l_"trusty". please open your /etc/apt/sources.list in a editor. you just need to exchange the repo url as described. you dont need to touch anything else.20:28
k1l_temmi_hoo: its already set to trusty as release codename. and that needs to stay that. the "do-release-upgrade" command will handle the change in its upgrade procedure.20:29
k1l_its as easy as i told you 10 times: change the url in that file, run the upgrader, reboot when finnished.20:29
temmi_hooi know i did wrong, i'll have to do it right when i get on site20:30
temmi_hooso when i'm upgrading from 14.10 to 15.04 does it still stay trusty?20:31
nacctemmi_hoo: no, trusty is 14.0420:31
nacctemmi_hoo: oh you meant in that file? it will change as a part of the upgrade20:31
Jordan_Utemmi_hoo: *You* never change the codename, because that will break things. do-release-upgrade will change it at the appropriate time.20:32
k1l_temmi_hoo: no. you do that procedure for the 14.04 -> 14.10 upgrade. then the same for 14.10 ->15.04 upgrade. you dont exchange the CODENAME in that file. you just exchange the repo url.20:32
temmi_hooas in the tool does the change and after upgrade i can go read what cartoon character my new and shiny 15 is?20:32
k1l_temmi_hoo: the changing of the CODENAME is task of the upgrader. dont touch that20:32
temmi_hoookay20:32

temmi_hoono, i'm just happy i don't need to find out cartoon character names when i know i want to go from 14 to 1520:33

EriC^^oh21:21

mike_papacompdoc: yes.21:22
mike_papaFrom what I read I need uefi for gpu passthrough21:23
compdocon the host21:23
mike_papacompdoc: and many say you need to use "-bios OVMF"21:23
mike_papabut... let's try without it.21:24
compdocpassthrough requires a system (hardware) that supports it, and iommu enabled in the host21:25
mike_papalivecd is booting, nouveau still not working.21:25
compdocand a gpu that isnt in use by the host21:25
mike_papacompdoc: I do have that. Actually guest already is working with gpu. I can run windows install on it, and almost run ubuntu live (nouveau breaks).21:26
mike_papaactually it got much more responsive on seabios.21:27
compdocIve played with nic passthrough, but have never done gpu or anything else. Ive never found a good use for passthrough, since all my VMs are servers of one sort or other21:27
mike_papaI'll do fresh install, and see what happeds.21:27
n-iCehi21:28
compdocif you have newer Intel hardware, it should work.21:28
HanaNixIs there a way to use the --with- option when installing using apt-get install?21:29
mike_papaI'm tired of rebooting to use linux and windows, so I'll use Ubuntu server as host, ubuntu desktop as guest, and windows as guest with gpu passthrough on 2nd monitor input. This way I can work and play ;)21:29

n-iCehi guys, question, my laptop has something like a pad, to volume up and down, you need to slide the finger on the pad to volume up and down, do you think anyway to make it work in linux?21:31

mike_papan-iCe: did you look on manufacturers page for linux support?21:32
mike_papan-iCe: those things differ a lot in matter how are actually implemented.21:32
MeXTuXEriC^^ it's an emulator (mupen) but the PPA's are not always working21:32
mike_papan-iCe: but there are some common solutions used in popular laptops as well.21:32

Jordan_UMeXTuX: Why do you want to use a version from a ppa rather than what is in the repos?21:34
mike_papan-iCe: I know your pain. Sony's support is awful. I've quit trying with mine after several hours. They have problems with supporting Windows 10, so...21:35
n-iCemike_papa, the problem is, sometimes when I touch it the right click gets like frozen, and happens sometimes when the laptop boots, is there at least a way to disable those keys?21:37
romarewhy doesn't it go to the previous page on firefox when I hit "backspace"? is there a way to activate it?21:38
mike_papan-iCe: I doubt it would be an easy way. Try if it's possible to disable that thing in firmware at all. That would be easiest.21:38
mike_paparomare: try Alt+[left arrow]21:39
mike_paparomare: or Ctrl+[21:40
