[15:00] yes [15:04] I just installed xubuntu 15.10 and encountered bug 798414 . my boot partition was only 100 meg so i increased it to 1024 meg and 15.10 installed just fine. Was the boot sector filling up the correct assumption and making it bigger the correct solution? [15:12] xubuntu52w, likely so [15:12] you don't explicitly even need a separate /boot partition though [15:13] xu 14.04 3 issues: 1.openGL GLX extension not supported by display - when starting steam 2.Sticky corners&edges configuration? 3.When booting i get "Searching for disk drivers to cancel press C" which ends in a black screen [15:14] knowns fixes? [15:14] knome, thanks, I didn't realize it wasnt needed. [15:15] xubuntu52w, as long as you clean up old kernels, you should be fine with 1G [15:15] knome: I am bad at that :) [15:16] knome: I am planning on having 2 distros running [15:17] the hard drive is huge, whats a couple GB amongst friends. :) [15:17] xubuntu52w, if you are still in the early intallation stage, you could also reinstall without a separate /boot [15:18] everything that doesn't have a specific partition uses the space in the / partition [15:19] i just finished. [15:19] i'll leave it but keep it in my notes for next time. [15:20] i suppose I could disable it and let it default to / [15:21] not sure if that would work after installing though [15:21] good to know. I'll leave well enough alone. :) [15:21] but you could run a live-cd, then copy stuff from the /boot partition to the / partition, then disable and boot back to the installation [15:21] that *should* work [15:22] thank you for your help [15:22] np [15:22] enjoy xubuntu [15:22] i very much do [15:22] I switched to it a couple years ago [15:22] but this is the first time I custom set up the drive partitions === ibm is now known as Guest78873 === Noneatme|Away is now known as Noneatme [15:49] I'm planning to switch my main rig to xubuntu [15:50] how is the multi monitor support with xfce? [19:11] glumpy: you should be able to do that in the system settings, in Users & Groups [19:36] dkessel, Could it be that my user is already in the cdrom group? Because I see that under users and groups, under advanced, user privileges - use of cdrom drives is ticked. [19:38] glumpy: that sure sounds so. Why do you want to add the user to the group? Maybe you're on the wrong track [19:41] I'm using foobar2000 under wine. It works great, but can't burn cds (I think it doesn't recognize the cdrom). I read here: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12359#c12 that someone advised people to add their user to the cdrom group in order to be able to give wine access to the cdrom [19:41] bugs.winehq.org bug 12359 in -unknown "Express Rip and Exact Audio Copy can't detect the CD drive" [Normal,New] [19:41] dkessel, Are you using wine? [21:19] Um. [21:19] Am I supposed to be able to use su on a default xubuntu install? O_o [21:19] Kind of defeats the point of having a sudoers file. [21:20] (In particular, my totally unprivileged default user can use su, log into the privileged user and then sudo for root.) [21:22] namespace, if the user has the password for a privileged user, why shouldn't they be able to use the privileges? [21:27] knome: Well, for one thing you're assuming that we're talking about a human at the console. [21:27] Which in the world of computer security is a real stupid assumption. I'm imagining a brute force program that runs su for a very long time until it gets in. [21:27] There's no penalty for doing so, so why wouldn't it? [21:29] Unless you have a cron job checking for somebody constantly running su/etc, there's no real chance of detection. [21:29] So you could feasibly have a payload for some exploit that just goes brute forcing for two months until it gets in. [21:31] It also defeats the point of having a separate user and admin account, which is considered best practice. [21:31] Since the user account can just su into the admin account, etc. [21:44] extend file system [21:44] how exend file system [22:42] hey, i'm totally out of options here, can't start the OS to install it at all [22:42] can anyone throw out ideas of what it might be? [23:54] Just wanted to drop this note so people could be informed: [23:54] http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32455684/difference-between-real-user-id-effective-user-id-and-saved-user-id [23:55] Basically, system audits can keep track of how account/privilege escalation is done via sudo, but cannot do so via "su". If you're going to allow account changes, using "sudo -iu ${nonroot_account}" is *much* better than "su - ${nonroot_account}". [23:55] I apologize for this interruption.
