FLinux291TJ- Oh. Thats the issue, i cannot find a UEFI driver for my chipset, i dont know why.00:00
SaraKnoodlesebsebseb.. i ve found a script on the internet making the job for me... and it worked00:00
FLinux291SH script?00:00
sebsebsebSaraKnoodle: random scripts on net hmm00:00
SaraKnoodleyes00:00
sebsebsebSaraKnoodle: some scripts wil be malicious like that00:00
SaraKnoodleubuntuhandbook.org :)00:00
SaraKnoodlegood to know00:00
SaraKnoodlelet me paste it00:00
cshdeuOla00:01
SaraKnoodleubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/08/install-last-kernel-script00:01
TJ-FLinux291: right, a manufacturer issue. That could just as easily affect  BIOS firmware though, I don't think its fair to blame UEFI API for that. UEFI design is incredible; fixed all the problems that BIOS and other firmwares revealed over the years.00:01
SaraKnoodlehold on.. i reboot ubuntu00:01
FLinux291TJ- I know. It solved my issue with Win8.1 but it doesnt solve issues with Linux, even in secure boot off. Well i will check my UEFI settings.00:02
Mitchell92how will ubuntu work with a touch screen notebook? Will it act like another pointing device, and if so can I easily disable it?00:03
SaraKnoodleback here00:04
TJ-FLinux291: if you remember, check which brand/version the firmware is, because I've been collecting a list of the poor ones. Acer and Lenovo seem to come high on the list, with Insyde H20 and others00:04
SaraKnoodlesebsebseb did you check that site?00:04
sebsebsebMitchell92: my lap top using righ now is touch screen :)00:04
sebsebsebSaraKnoodle: nope00:04
Mitchell92sebsebseb, how is it workign on linux? Can you go in and disable it just as if it were a pointing device?00:04
sebsebsebMitchell92: the noteboot also had a normal trackpad etc?00:04
Mitchell92sebsebseb, the one I ordered does, yes00:05
Mitchell92it just also happens to have a touch screen.00:05
sebsebsebMitchell92: yes I think there's probably a setting some where to disable it, but I don't boher doing that00:05
sebsebsebMitchell92: I tend to use the normal track pad to00:05
sebsebseb,but00:05
sebsebsebit's worked well in aa few distros00:05
sebsebsebMitchell92: there will be a setting or a commadn or something to disable it though sure00:06
SaraKnoodledoesnt matter00:06
Mitchell92Yeah. As well as the EUFI that these machines have, if thats what its called... I forget, will I need to go into the bios and change settings prior to an ubuntu install?00:06
sebsebsebMitchell92: yep00:06
sebsebsebMitchell92: go in there disable secure boot00:07
sebsebseband then after that should be good to go00:07
Mitchell92Okay. What would hapen if I don't disable secure boot?00:07
sebsebsebMitchell92: your usb  etc external drives won't even boot up with secure boot enabled00:07
Mitchell92oh, wow... okay00:07
sebsebsebMitchell92: oh and I was answering that typing that as your question came in00:07
Mitchell92Thanks. :)00:07
sebsebsebMitchell92: some UEFI bioses don't have a disable  secure boot option or it's maybe quite hidden away, but most do so shoudl be ok00:08
Mitchell92Okay. I have a desktop computer that I got off newegg refurbished and i was able to load up linux without changing bios and it didnt even have a secure boot option00:09
TJ-sebsebseb: most UEFI compliant firmware *should* boot Ubuntu ISOs with Secure Boot enabled, because we use signed images00:09
sebsebsebMitchell92: UEFI is only for the newer computers00:09
Mitchell92I'll be very frustrated if the one I just ordered gives me issues. Hopefully I can go in and disable secure boot, or maybe it wont even have one.00:09
sebsebsebMitchell92: everythng else will be the old bios set up00:09
Mitchell92I know when installling ubuntu on the desktop it asked me if i wanted to run it in uefi mode or not00:10
sebsebsebMitchell92: TJ- may have a point just now, but for my usual distro it would need to be disabled00:10
sebsebsebMitchell92: and I think the USB's still won't boot up with it enabled00:10
TJ-sebsebseb: some systems have this weird 'security' option where you have to pre-authorise a boot-loader executable (grubx64.efi) in Setup before booting, even with S.B. disabled00:10
FLinux291Mitchell92 You changed the settings to Legacy/CSM?00:11

Ben64alt-left does nothing here00:22
Ben64wait, it moves the #ubuntu channel in the list on the left up00:23
Bashing-omalt left/right - irssi -cycles through the windows for me .00:24
EriC^^TJ-: wow, pretty odd00:24
EriC^^TJ-: try holding alt then press d, then c, in an empty tty00:24
EriC^^seems to clear it or stop getty or something00:24
shadw_itmanTJ-:  so ya... i deleted all the partitions execpt for the recovery partition... (ie including the GSP parition).... now the computer wont boot anything00:25
EriC^^i also borked it completely making it give weird characters every where somehow, no idea how though00:25

engineer-pearlSo I have a bash script that I am trying to schedule in crontab, but... I need to interact with it (to prevent it from interfiering with another process.) ratraceAnd then you own the PHP files by root, and allow only specific dirs writable to the user under which PHP is running.08:00
DevAntoineBen65, you're right, whoami with sudo prints root so why when I getfacl I have my user being displayed too?08:03
llutzDevAntoine: Ben65 setfacl runs with sudo, not the following whoami. test: sudo echo `whoami`08:04

mikecmpbllmorning, all. i'm struggling with an iptables/ufw problem at the moment. i can't get ufw working at all after i issued a `sudo iptables --flush`. my intention was to clear out old iptables generated rules before starting afresh with ufw, but my (uneducated) assumption is that it has removed some necessary ufw default rules or somehing. /xposted to linux08:17
cfhowlettmikecmpbll, sudo ufw --enable     should work08:18
Cablegunmasterbrb08:18
mikecmpbllsays invalid syntax. however, assuming you mean sudo ufw enable, that's what i've done08:19
mikecmpbllnone of the rules i specify appear to work: sudo ufw allow 22; sudo ufw enable; and it boots me out of ssh08:19
cfhowlettsorry about that mikecmpbll but yeah ... that should reset your default ufw08:19
mikecmpbllif i look at a different server where ufw seems to be working, there's some ufw specific rules in the INPUT chain when i do sudo iptables -L -v08:20
mikecmpbllthe stuff in the codeblock here: http://serverfault.com/questions/768864/ufw-iptables-confusion08:20

RedbeardtI'm trying to move the contents of my entire SSD with windows on it, onto an external USB drive which is larger, and make it bootable. I used dd to copy the first half or so of files, and then I got impatient and cancelled it. It had copied the partition table so that was good, but the recovery and os partitions didn't have the data. So I did a dd on the recovery partition (since it wa ssmall) and copied the OS contents with a cp09:00
Redbeardtso the contents of the two drives should be identical barring different free space09:00
Redbeardtbut the USB isnt bootable :o09:00

DomeMasterhi guys12:26
DomeMasterI'm just learning about capabilities12:26
DomeMasterand I assumed that ping was a classic example that should have RAW socket capabilities and setuid to root12:27
DomeMasterbut when I run getcap on ping12:27
DomeMasterit has no caps12:27
DomeMasterwhy is this?12:27
DomeMasterisn't it a security risk?12:27
EriC^^isn't ping suid?12:27
DomeMasterit is EriC^^12:27
EriC^^so it has root priv12:27
DomeMasterbut it has no caps so isn't it a security risk as it has all root privileges12:27
DomeMasterit should ONLY have privilege to raw sockets12:28
EriC^^if it's root it can do anything no?12:28
EriC^^the idea is that there isn't a vulnerability in it (known one anyways)12:28
DomeMasterit can but that is the idea behind capabilities12:28
DomeMasteryou can reduce the power of root12:28
DomeMasterso it's less risky12:28
EriC^^i thought caps were just perks, like you give a program caps to bind to sockets less than 1024, dont know much about caps honestly12:29
DomeMasterEriC^^:  I just learnt about them12:29
DomeMasterthey are the reverse of what you said12:29
EriC^^you're saying even if a program is suid, you can "cap" it?12:29
DomeMasterwell kind of, let me explain12:29
DomeMasterroot has all caps available to it12:30
DomeMasterwhat you can do is explicitly set caps. So for example ping only needs RAW sockets12:30
DomeMastertherefore you remove all other capabilities12:30
DomeMasterso it's still root, but it has restricted power12:30
EriC^^yeah so ping wouldn't need to be suid then right? cause caps gives it perks for that12:30
DomeMasteruntil kernel 2.6.x it would just do if( user == 0 ) then do anything12:30
EriC^^or am i off here?12:30
DomeMasterbut now it does if( cap[ RAW_SOCKET ] ) allow raw socket code12:30
DomeMasteryup caps only work for root12:31
DomeMasterbecause if you're not root you can't access anyway12:31
EriC^^that doesnt make sense though12:31
EriC^^cause if a program isn't root, you can give it caps to bind to lower ports that root can only12:31
EriC^^same for the cap for wireshark to capture packets without root priv12:32
DomeMasterFrom what I've read that is incorrect12:32
EriC^^i think you're mistaken12:32
DomeMastercheck this out: http://www.andy-pearce.com/blog/posts/2013/Mar/file-capabilities-in-linux/12:32
EriC^^unless we're talking about different things12:32
DomeMasterIt makes a lot of sense to me12:32
EriC^^it's exactly what im saying12:33
EriC^^(didn't read the link honestly but read here http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man7/capabilities.7.html )12:33
EriC^^caps are like perks you can give12:33
EriC^^not inhibitions12:33
TGYoshiHey guys, anyone knows a simple tool for linux/ubuntu which can extract a single page from a multipage tiff image?12:34
DomeMasterone sec EriC^^12:34
TGYoshiWithout extracting [all] pages to separate files12:34
DomeMasterwireshark does it by using a program called dumpcap12:34
DomeMasterif you do ls -l on dumpcap you get12:34
EriC^^i get no suid on it12:35
EriC^^-rwxr-xr-- 1 root wireshark 77080 Mar 11  2014 /usr/bin/dumpcap12:35
DomeMastersorry was just reading12:35
DomeMasterbut yeah do getcap /usr/bin/dumpcap12:35
DomeMasteryou can see it has caps then12:36
EriC^^in any case it's the same concept as allowing any program to listen to a port lower than 1024, you give it that cap to bind to lower ports (which root has by default)12:36
DomeMasterThis is the quote from link I sent above, which makes me think I'm correct (I'm not married to it but the article makes sense)12:36
DomeMaster"To save you reading the article above in detail, in essence this allows processes which start as root, and hence have permission to do anything, to retain certain limited abilities chosen from this set when they drop privileges and run as a standard user. "12:36
EriC^^DomeMaster: exactly12:38
EriC^^he's saying without suid you can have "some" root perks12:38
EriC^^which you set with cap (not inihibit)12:38
EriC^^"..tures allow you to associate capabilities with executables, in a similar way to setting the SUID bit but only for the specific capabilities set"12:38
DomeMasterbut you have to start as root first or inherit them from a process that started as root at somepoint12:38
EriC^^DomeMaster: nope you dont12:38
EriC^^that's his take on making it less vulnerable12:39
EriC^^he's saying inside your program once you do the dirty work, you drop the suid and it has normal user id, but you use caps to give it the specific perks you need12:39
DomeMasterok there is a simple way to test this12:39
DomeMasterI'll remove setuid from ping12:39
DomeMastergive it the caps12:40
EriC^^you're misreading..12:40
DomeMasterand see if it works12:40
EriC^^well you dont know how ping works12:40
EriC^^*shrug* it's what is in all the articles12:41
DomeMasteryou are right12:41
DomeMasterit worked12:41
SaraKnoodlehello people12:41
DomeMasterso you can just set cap without going to root12:41
EriC^^DomeMaster: yes cap are perks you can give, not inhibitions, and you dont need to be root to have them12:42
DomeMasterhere you go EriC^^: http://paste.ubuntu.com/15686700/12:42
DomeMasterthat makes much more sense to me EriC^^, but the article I said otherwise12:43
DomeMasterthe kernel just looks at the inode then loads the caps from there12:44
DomeMasteras it is the kernel it can do that12:44
DomeMasterok cool12:44
DomeMastergot it12:44
DomeMasteranyway back to my original question, why doesn't ubuntu do this by default. It shouldn't use setuid it should use caps for ping12:44

krobzaurtrevor_s: Dual booting is generally a pain in the ass and I know nothing about windows.15:17
trijntjeHi all, I'm running ubuntu but I keep losing wifi, using both the internal wifi and a dongle. What could be going on?15:17
f00f00it looks for a specific version of libstdc++15:18
f00f00concretely, it requires version 6.2-215:18
krobzaurtrevor_s: But what you want to do is live boot (you can use the ubuntu installer to do that), then partition your disk the way you want it15:18
f00f00but when I install the packages for running 32 bit applications, I only get version 6.015:18
f00f00how do I fix this?15:18
krobzaurtrevor_s: So you'll need a GPT partition table. You can create one at the command line. Then you'll need an EFI System Partition. That is the parition grub will exist on.15:19
trijntjekrobzaur: wont creating a new partition table destroy their windows install?15:20
krobzaurtrijntje: Yes15:20
trevor_skrobzaur, i need to create both of those even though windows already has an EFI boot partition?15:20
trijntjetrevor_s: do you really need lvm?15:20
trevor_swhy do you want to destroy my windows install?15:20
ash_workztrijntje: maybe try throwing in your version of ubuntu and any error messages you get; move closer to the antenna; how long does it stay up before it shuts off, etc? Also, google in the mean time and ask again in like 20 minutes or so unless you discover something different. I would probably start with something like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=25557 -- read up on your utilities15:20
trevor_strijntje, what would be my reason for needing lvm? i was told i needed it15:21
trevor_sto have full disk encryption on ubuntu15:21
krobzaurtrevor_s: If you already have a system running on the drive how do you plan to create another partition for you ubuntu install?15:21
krobzaurtrevor_s: If you don't know why you need lvm, you probably don't need it15:21
trijntjetrevor_s: nah, you dont need lvm for encryption, people like it because it makes it easier to change partitions late on, but I've never bothered with it15:21
Piciash_workz: yes, there are only 5 fields in cron.  Your command is running some clever logic to run /scripts/fortnightly.sh only if the output if the prior command 9.15:22
Piciash_workz: er, 0, not 9.15:22
krobzaurtrevor_s: You're going to have to repartition your disk somehow to make room for your ubuntu install, unless you left free space on the disk when you installed windows15:22
trevor_skrobzaur, i left free space15:22
trijntjeash_workz: I've been trying a lot of stuf, its not related to the antena since it happens like once every minute, and it drops the connection completely every 5 or so. Ill just hang around here for a bit15:22
trevor_si shrunk the drive15:22
krobzaurtrevor_s: How much?15:22
ash_workzPici: if the 'output' is prior command 0?15:22

llutzash_workz: "expr `date +\%W` \% 2 > /dev/null || /scripts/fortnightly.sh"  is the <cmd> part, not a 6th time field. running script/fortnightly every even week-no15:23
ash_workzllutz: oooo15:24
trevor_sthe booting is the sticking point here... i dont know or if i even need to configure /boot partition... and i dont know where to install grub15:24

trijntjetrevor_s: no, you need 1 500MB ext4 partition with mountpoint /boot15:28
llutzash_workz: due to the cron-limitations you always have to use some constructs like that. so i'd say "it's fine if its working"15:28

scalperEriC^^: i can add the user and give it a password etc, but when i login it will popup the login/password dialog again, so unity isn't starting or something17:10

scalper_eric17:26
scalper_i can't get loading the xserver so i keep in the bash17:26
trevor_sEriC^^, ya i guess17:26
trevor_si mean... at least know what was changed so i get grub17:27
scalper_eric: the videodrivers are ok because the login prompt is in the gui17:27
ph88jhutchins, chipset is fine because i can connect to other wifi networks, i think it's because of channel 13 which is not used in USA (but i'm in europe)17:27
scalper_eric: the laptop is just an acer laptop from 201117:27
EriC^^TJ-: long story short, hp envy, boots straight to windows, disabling windows boot entry didn't cut it, switching bootmgfw.efi didn't either, switching bootmgfw.efi and bootx64.efi gives a grub menu, but selecting windows brings up grub again after a pause (the windows efi is properly in grub.cfg though)17:27
ioriauatec   mv ~/.compiz  ~/compiz.backup17:28
scalper_EriC^^: what can i do now17:28
EriC^^trevor_s: i'm confused you want to make grub boot but windows doesn't boot from grub like it was a while ago?17:29
TJ-EriC^^: easiest answer first: GRUB in EFI mode with a Windows entry in its menu will ask the system firmware to boot the entry... so with you having switched the files around you go straight back into GRUB :)17:29
EriC^^TJ-: i know, but we switched os-prober's 20microsoft to look for the windows bootmgfw.efi.backup file17:29
EriC^^and it's properly in grub.cfg, it just seems to pause for a second, then boot grub again17:30
scalper_eric: my Ubuntu is stuck in a login loop when trying to enter my desktop. When I login, the screen gets black and soon after that the login screen comes back.17:30
trevor_sEriC^^, right now i go straight to windows without grub... maybe that is best for now17:30
EriC^^scalper_: you need to copy your data off it?17:30
trevor_si just need this to be as default as possible so i can recreate this in a production environment... dare i say it17:30
trevor_sthats what is going to happen17:30
TJ-EriC^^:  trevor_s as to GRUB's /EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi being ignored... smells to me like one of those systems where you have to 'bless' the GRUB efi file itself. If it is, enter the system's firmware set-up, look for a Security menu, and towards the lower end of that should be an option along the lines of "Trust file" ... it opens a file-chooser showing files in the EFI system partition. Navigate to17:31
TJ-/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi, choose it. Then the system should agree to use it.17:31
EriC^^trevor_s: ok, type sudo cp /boot/efi/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi.backup /boot/efi/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi17:31
EriC^^that should leave all the files like they were, just with extra .backup files there17:31
TJ-EriC^^: but if the system hasn't Trusted that 'backup' file location, it'll ignore it, like it ignores grubx64.efi17:32
EriC^^also make sure /usr/lib/os-probes/mounted/efi/20microsoft has bootmgfw.efi as it is default and sudo update-grub was run17:32
TJ-trevor_s: what's the make/model of the PC?17:33
trevor_swait a second... this is weird... if i manually select unbuntu efi entry in the system uefi boot manager(escape-f10) and then get to grub... the windows entry works and takes me to bitlocker17:33
trevor_show its set up now17:33
trevor_sbut if i just let the machine boot... it goes straight to bitlocker17:33
TJ-trevor_s: as in, which model number, I know 'HP Envy' but that covers a wide range of devices17:33
EriC^^trevor_s: yeah it's using the bootmgfw.efi right now17:33
Gallomimiawhy am i getting a 404 error for downloading the firefox update on this mirror?17:33
EriC^^it doesn't like that we called it bootmgfw.efi.backup17:34
Gallomimiais it common? can i get it on a different mirror?17:34
TJ-trevor_s: that is because the EFI Boot Manager has a default entry set, which will be Windows.17:34
=== export_ is now known as export
TJ-trevor_s: That will always boot if you don't access the manual boot device selection menu17:34
trevor_sTJ-,  envy 13-d010nr17:34

trevor_sTJ-, that option of trusted file in the firmware doesn't exist17:36
EriC^^trevor_s: is secureboot enabled?17:36
EriC^^why should it care what the file name is anyways17:37
EriC^^TJ-: doesn't it check some other stuff, what's a filename to it?17:37

scalper_i wanted to format it anyways but first i wanted to backup some parts of the hdd17:39

TJ-ChunkzZ: if all you have is literally acpi_osi=   that won't do anything to help; you need to give a valid string that the motherboard recognises20:23
ChunkzZI don't know what to do :/20:23
ChunkzZmy laptop came with windows 820:24
ChunkzZdoes that make a difference?20:24
TJ-ChunkzZ: what is the actual problem the system is having20:24
ChunkzZright, nothing edited in grub, screen brightness full....battery says 4 hours...acpi_osi= in grub and screen brightness 0% 4 hours....20:25
ChunkzZTJ-, ^20:25
Rammusguys any help?20:25
TJ-ChunkzZ: you mean the predicted battery life remaining value?20:26
jonathan_zzRammus: I would simply suggest you try to replicate the issue in a newer version (of Ubuntu) (using a newer kernel), not much else you can do.20:26
ChunkzZboth the same yes, with screen brightness full or 0%20:26
Rammusthank u :(20:27
TJ-ChunkzZ: but you're not assigning any *value* with acpi_osi=20:27
TJ-ChunkzZ: so, it won't change anything20:27
jonathan_zzRammus: if everything is frozen there won't be any output in the log files right20:27
ChunkzZyeah I don't know what to put sorry20:27
ChunkzZmy laptop came with windows 820:27
ChunkzZwhat do I need to put?20:27
TJ-ChunkzZ: you need to put in one of the strings the ACPI DSDT recognises20:28
ChunkzZ'!Windows 8' ?20:28
Rammusjonathan_zz: true20:28
TJ-ChunkzZ: you can discover them usually doing "sudo strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT | grep -i 'windows' "20:28
Rammusi didnt have this problem when i had windows20:29
jonathan_zzRammus: but if there was, I guess you'd have to check /var/log/messages or syslog for anything.20:29
Rammusalready did nothing to mention20:29
jonathan_zzthen personally I'd think there'd be little interest in troubleshooting a hardware freeze (kernel freeze?) in a much older kernel than what is current now.20:30
TJ-Rammus: how much RAM does the PC have?20:30
jonathan_zzthe only thing you could attempt would be to selectively change hardware.20:30
Rammusactually the problem started after i installed a game20:31
jonathan_zzand/or run a memory test.20:31

Rammusmmm i just want to know if it is a hardware or software fault so i can decide what to do20:33
jonathan_zzand you are entirely sure everything stops responding, including network services? from another host20:33
Rammusany thoughts?20:34
Rammushaven't tried pinging my self really20:34
f00z00I got some files I need to execute a legacy app. Can I just copy them into the system-wide /lib directory, or is there something else I need to do?20:34
jonathan_zzbecause like I have an issue with a game where the entire screen stops redrawing but in fact the system still responds.20:34
ChunkzZTJ-, I set it to windows 2012 but now I can't change the brightness?20:34
Rammusanother thing the fan goes nuts after some seconds of the freeze20:34
Rammuslike a jet engine20:34
Rammusbut no over heating as far as i could check20:35
jonathan_zzsee that would indicate either 100% CPU or...... a change in fan control.20:35

jonathan_zzis it a pwm fan?20:35
Rammusthe cpu would be less than 50% i installed a system monitor20:35
Rammusno no pwm20:35
Rammuswho controls the fan ? the kernel or external hardware?20:36
jonathan_zzI have a system on which fan goes 100% at reboot but that is because the fan control app gets shut down and it resets the values to 100%.20:36
TJ-ChunkzZ: can you do "pastebinit <( cat /etc/default/grub /boot/grub/grub.cfg )"20:36
jonathan_zzin my case (debian system) it is a program.20:36
Rammusit must pwm fan to be controlled by a program right?20:37
jonathan_zzusually I don't know, PWM is not voltage control but you can have voltage control as well.....I guess??20:37
Rammusi don't lnow :(20:38

pwcaI get the menu in the top, but it doesn't *load*.20:39
Rammusok i will try installing one and see if it works so i can continue troubleshooting20:39

jonathan_zzidk, better see if one is already installed? :P.20:40
jonathan_zzI think it is not worth the trouble, just upgrade to 16.04 you know. See if it helps.20:40

stevecampwca yes?20:45
Rammusah like defragment so they are at the start ?20:46
jonathan_zzsome tools do both though20:46
jonathan_zzbut you cannot resize your mounted root online, you can only increase its size, not shrink it20:46
ChunkzZ1any ideas?20:46
TJ-ChunkzZ1: that leading "!" has the effect of *removing* the string, not adding it. delete the "!" and regenerate "update-grub" and reboot20:46

TJ-ChunkzZ: how are you trying to change it? with keys, or via command-line tools?20:55
ChunkzZfn keys20:55
ChunkzZit says it's going up and down with fn keys but it's not changing20:56
TJ-ChunkzZ: well, it might just be a platform hot-keys issue, so try using the command-line first20:56
ChunkzZ^ ;p20:56
lorddoskiasTJ-: ok i got what the problem was - my custom kernel didn't have FILE_LOCKING enabled ergo the fcntl calls were failing20:57
TJ-ChunkzZ: also, have you tested with the kernel command-line paramater acpi_backlight=vendor20:57
TJ-lorddoskias: haha! you should have used one of the Ubuntu 'cloud' (virtual machine) kernel images20:58
lorddoskiasTJ-: i'm going to be doing my own kernel development so that's why i need a custom kernel with minimal config20:58
TJ-ChunkzZ: to control the brightness from command-line, check the sysfs nodes available with "ls /sys/class/backlight/*/" and then read the current values with "for n in /sys/class/backlight/*/*; do [ -f $n ] && echo $n=$(cat $n); done"21:00

AlexshmalexI just downloaded ubuntu 14.04 and it drops my wifi after a few minutes and I have to reboot to get a connection again21:48
naccjinette: it says for 15.04 d/l manually. You could try that for 15.10. Or ask gitlab?21:49
jinettenacc, maybe as here: https://about.gitlab.com/installation/, with the mentioned Omnibus package21:50
* tgm4883 wonders how this is a ubuntu issue21:51
naccjinette: yes, click on it and shows you direct instructions for installing gitlab; but as i was trying to imply, you'd need to ask gitlab for support21:51

naccjinette: random software installation on ubuntu is not supported by ubuntu21:51

Alexshmalexany takers? I tried the forum, and the codes didn't seem to work, it's amazing that I'm online right now21:54
tgm4883jinette: to put it another way, Warcraft 2 says it requires Windows 98. That doesn't mean you can call Microsoft to support it when you try to run it on Windows 1021:54

cfhowlettshall we all move on now??21:58
jinetteyes, I was already about to.21:59
tgm4883jinette: look, here's the deal. Even if we wanted to help you with gitlab, we'd have to go read their site and try and figure out how to install it on 15.10. Something that A) you can do yourself, and B) Something that the people in #gitlab have a far better chance of already having done22:00
jinettetgm4883, I did that, of course, I can do that till I find something someplace on internet. but I am talking about that the attitude can be more permissive, and it used to be. it is a plain matter of attitude whether to say 'we are not tasked with this' or see if someone online can respond. the former blocks the latter straight away.22:02
jinetteanyway. I go.22:03

TechspectreSo what does it mean when editing your evdev.conf file doesn't work, but setting xinput --set-prop does?22:20
HetroErectusTechspectre, seems its the same performance ... 5870 being a tad slower22:20
HetroErectusi was comparing it to the new gpu's running like $2-300 in terms of bitcoin mining and the difference were massive22:21
