procyon_emberdavido: Thanks for that. I didn't know about it.05:01

davidoor context.05:02
davidoanyway, glad that last one worked.05:02
Jordan_Uprocyon_ember: That only tells you what installation media was used. I for example installed my current machine with Ubuntu GNOME, then switched to XFCE afterward due to hardware problems with the GPU.05:05
procyon_emberdavido: what else?05:05
davidoi'm a fan of duck-typing. if it quacks, it is.  So this gets back to the purpose of knowing.  If it's so that software can install a particular way, then look at what specific needs the software has, and check for those requisites.05:06
procyon_emberdavido: Nothing of the sort.05:07
procyon_emberJordan_U: Which installation media is very useful. I wish I had asked for exactly that :)05:07

procyon_emberMaybe not so much though.05:08
Jordan_Uprocyon_ember: If you had started by telling us what you wanted this for we may have offered you exactly that (or a better for you solution that we haven't yet given) straight away, instead of wasting time pulling teeth.05:09

redtuxedocashanother question is, does ubuntu have such IDM on windows? internet download manager?08:19
wolffh08:19
Jordan_Uredtuxedocash: The problem is that you're running *applications* that happen to be written in javascript and html. You can't just make a "lighter" web browser because it's not the browser that's heavy, it's the web applications the browser is running. Have you tried disabling javascript?08:19
auronandaceredtuxedocash: it doesn't hurt to try other browsers though, you could give midori a try08:19

Jordan_Uredtuxedocash: There are multiple "download managers" available for Ubuntu. I have no experience with IDM, but my favorite download manager on any platform is wget. wget may not suit you if you want a GUI though (it's entirely terminal based).08:21
wolffyesç08:21

wolffdown vote08:22
wolffI would recommend the wget command line utility which is absolutely awesome!08:22
redtuxedocashJordan_U: i like GUI, but sometimes i would rather having such app to act directly towards some files and videos i am watching and i can also download it there08:22
redtuxedocashis it easy to use it?08:22
wolffwget is a GNU free software package that is used for retrieving files over the web. If you have got it installed, then all you have to do is to get the download link and use wget to download it.08:22
redtuxedocashbut i have no problems with terminal08:22
wolffIn order to get the download link, right click on whichever download you want in the firefox download manager. There will be an option ‘copy download link’. Click on it08:23
redtuxedocashwolff: sure i gotit08:23
wolffThen open a terminal and go to whichever folder you want the file downloaded to. Assuming it is in the Desktop, type the following command at the prompt08:24
Jordan_Uredtuxedocash: The most basic usage is "wget http://some_website/foo.bar" to download a file. Add "-c" to continue a file you've already started earlier (I just always include "-c", since there is no harm in including it when starting a file).08:24
wolffwget <paste your download link here>08:24
wolffNow even if it gets stuck in the middle, you can resume from wherever it was interrupted by giving the option -c to wget. That is, the command will be like08:24
wolffwget -c <paste your download link here>08:24
redtuxedocashnice08:24
redtuxedocashshould i put some commands to see the download progress?08:25

redtuxedocashlet me try08:25
redtuxedocashand to pause?08:26
redtuxedocashdownload?08:26
wolffyou can use Axel08:26
Jordan_Uredtuxedocash: One thing to note though, URLs often contain characters that the shell considers special (like '&', which will split a commmand in two) so I also always include single quotes around my URLs, like: wget 'http://assets.ubuntu.com/v1/590018e7-picto-ubuntukylin.svg'08:27
wolffI'm using Axel and I think it's the best, but it's a CLI application. You can download form unlimited connections (up to you) and use all of your bandwidth08:27
redtuxedocashJordan_U: good idea08:27
redtuxedocashput it into single command as a file08:27
Jordan_Uredtuxedocash: ctrl+c will kill wget, just like any other terminal command. Then you can resume by running wget with "-c" (another reason I always include the -c, I can just hit up arrow and re-run the command to continue).08:28

ldshHi, When I do a wifi hotspot with my laptop, it is detected by my smartphone. When I do from my desktop, it is detected by my laptop, but not by my smartphone. Both computers are with latest Ubuntu gnome and the smartphone android 4.4. Would it be a problem like the smartphone only having a new norm and the desktop only an old norm (whereas the laptop would have both norms)?11:45
bekksldsh: that may be the cause, you need to investigate it.11:46
ldshbekks, I don't even see the hotspot in the list of wifi networks from the smartphone side.11:47
MisterSandersonOn #ubuntu+1, someone said to me to use 15.10. Should I use 14.04 or 15.10?11:47
MonkeyDustMisterSanderson  14.04 if you want long support, 15.10 if you want the latest11:47

MonkeyDustrlens  start with a question17:41
rlensi have a copy of boot sector of my HDD  - first 512 bytes in file my_hdd_boot_sector.dat, how i cat create bootable usb flash to start boot from this file and continue from HDD?17:45
ratracerlens: which bootloader is that?17:46
MonkeyDustchallenging... has this ever been tried?17:46
rlensdon't know, may be grub4dos?17:47
ratracewell that's just the bootloader, hence my question. no grub config or anything in there.17:47
leachim6 I mean if you just wanna make an HDD bootable that's way easier17:47
ratracein other words, if that was a regular grub bootloader, you can achieve the same by simply running grub-install on whatever device17:47
leachim6^17:48
mrarm_Hey does anybody know since i have a trackpad on a macbook can i get the right click function where i can click in the bottom right of the screen.17:49
leachim6I think there is an extra package for that17:49
leachim6lemme check17:49
rlensi need start booting from file on my bootable flash becose of the first 512 bytes on my HDD are cleared17:49
leachim6just run "sudo grun-install /dev/whatever"17:50
leachim6at the very least you'll get a boot prompt17:50
leachim6s/grun-install/grub-install17:50
ratracerlens: the bootloader in those 512 bytes is only the first stage. you can't just move it elsewhere and expect the same results.17:50

Skuldanewodim are you still around?20:05
Jordan_USkuldane: If it just contains documents then you can chmod 777 the root directory to allow anyone to read/write files there.20:07
Skuldanejordan_u no I need it for all kinds of files and documents20:07
Jordan_USkuldane: I meant to only exclude for example a full GNU/Linux installation where 777 permissions would be insecure and break things.20:08

I am using the computer as a server for my friends and I to store and ahre files and when I mount thedrive only the user I was logged into as has access to it20:11

eypeonHi everyone, I was wondering whether someone could help me with an issue I'm having. I have ImageMagick 6.9.3-6 and Ghostscript 9.15 installed. I am trying to convert a PDF into a thumbnail, but everyone I run the command, I receive a blank image with this PDF: http://mceducation.azurewebsites.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Anderson_Shelter.pdf22:16
eypeonCan anyone offer any advice on why this is happening on a Ubuntu 14.04 machine ?22:16
reisioeypeon: what command?22:16
eypeonconvert22:16
eypeonThat command I am using is convert Anderson_Shelter.pdf thumbnail.jpg22:17
reisioyeah seems like the PDF is so broken the tools all choke on it22:18
reisiomaybe if you re-author it as a PDF with gs first, if you can22:18
eypeonIt's strange because I have run the same command on Mac when developing locally22:18
eypeonAnd there are no issues22:18
reisioyou have different fonts22:18
eypeonBut when I run it on my Ubuntu machine it produces a blank thumbnail22:18
eypeonI had a feeling that might be the case, it shows up as CIDFont when I used pdftools to check the PDF22:19
reisioopens fine in GIMP, though22:19
reisioI s'pose cairo can handle it, in that case22:19
eypeonAny suggestions on how I could get it to work with Imagemagick?22:20
reisioeypeon: pdftocairo -jpeg foo.pdf22:20
reisioalthough this should probably be a PNG, not a JPEG22:22
reisioas there is nothing photographic about it22:22
eypeonThat worked, but the issue I am facing is integrating this within a web application22:22
reisiohttp://www.ghostscript.com/doc/9.10/Use.htm#CIDFontSubstitution might have some leads22:25
blackroothello22:41
reisio'lo black22:42
B0bsF1shWhat exactly would ubuntu software center execute when I doubleclick a .deb file I downloaded? How can I do the same thing from the cmdline?22:43
reisioB0bsF1sh: gdebi, IIRC22:43
B0bsF1shFor upgrading an existing piece of software I mean22:43
reisioor just use xdg-open22:44
pr0metheu5Hey guys, my problem is with Fedora actually, but I'm hoping someone in here can help me.22:44
k1l_B0bsF1sh: use "dpkg -i " for cli22:44
reisiopr0metheu5: <headdesk>22:44
B0bsF1shAnd that will do everything the software center would do - upgrade, dependencies, etc?22:44
k1l_B0bsF1sh: but that might make chaos when depencies are mixed then22:44
pr0metheu5I just installed Fedora 23 alongside Windows 10 and chose auto partitioning, but after installation and restarting, there is no grub menu and it boots straight into Windows 10. My mobo doesnt even support UEFI.22:44
k1l_pr0metheu5: #fedora please for fedora issues22:44
pr0metheu5I think it's not a problem pertraining to the distro, but linux in general.22:44
bekkspr0metheu5: then #linux is your friend22:45
B0bsF1shI have an x-server, and I try launching gksudo nautilus and then dblclicking, but software center hangs. I tried launching gksudo software-center  and I can't find a way to browse inside there.22:45
k1l_B0bsF1sh: yes, it will try to get that depencies. but if the ubuntu repos dont have that explicit version it might make issues22:45
FlannelB0bsF1sh: gdebi will take care of dependencies, etc.  dpkg won't.22:45
B0bsF1shIs gdebi graphical? I can try gksudo gdebi22:46
FlannelB0bsF1sh: gdebi has a graphical frontend, but you can also use it on the command line.22:46
B0bsF1shah nice. ty22:46
supernovahello22:48
reisio'lo22:48
mTeKI need to run this idea by yall, I have a debian server with a software raid 1 and I don't want to drive an hour to replace the OS. Couldn't I just take the primary boot drive out of the array and dd a new ubuntu image on to it and reboot and fix the array after the reboot.22:48
B0bsF1shSeems it can't be gdebi that it runs because when I try it I get, "The program 'gdebi' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:"22:48
ikoniamTeK: if you take the drive out - you have to drive an hour22:49
ikoniayour logic is failing, unless I've missunderstood22:49
B0bsF1shI read it as "out of the RAID array" not "physically out of the case"22:50
ikonialets find out....22:50
FlannelB0bsF1sh: try xdg-open, that should open it in the "preferred" application.22:51
B0bsF1shany suggestions for better xserver than xming for windows - things sometimes generally work but are wonky at other times. Multiple aps running have no titlebars or menus, I can't move them around, I would ideally like an enture Ubuntu unity desktop just as if I started it up that way, only thrown to my xserver22:52
mTeKYes like to tell mdstat to take the drive out of the array and then fdisk it with new partitions. Then somehow dd a ubuntu the image onto the primary drive and reboot. Should be a ubuntu server then.22:52
ikoniaB0bsF1sh: there are a few comercial ones that are strong,22:52
ikoniahummingbird xceed, pc-xware and a few others22:52
ikoniamTeK: I wouldn't trust that at all22:53
B0bsF1shis xming just ... lacking and obsolete, or did I perhaps not configure something correctly22:53
ikoniamTeK: things like the fstab and grub config would need to be manipulated22:53
ikoniathe disk partitions would need to line up with the image and the physical drive before you put it on22:53
ikoniafiles such as the persistent_net file would need updating correctly etc22:53
ikoniathat seems like a huge risk22:54
mTeKI can dd a image from a VM on another hypervisor22:54
ikoniait's a different box22:54
ikoniathe image would be configured for the source machine22:54
mTeKlong as network has been chrooted and figured out linux don't care about switcing the other stuff22:55
B0bsF1shFlannel: heh! xdg-open threw a software-center GUI to xming22:55
ikoniamTeK: yes it does22:55
ikoniamTeK: the partition id's, the boot sector, the grub config id's etc22:55
ikoniathe mac address of the interfaces, there are many things22:55
mTeKI'm DD;ing a image from a runing server. Will mount the image after the server is shutdown and remove the persistante.70 rules for the nic and then it will assign eth0 the default22:57
mTeKI think this will work22:57
ikoniamTeK: I don't know why you are arguing this22:57
ikoniayou asked if it's a good idea - I said "no" and give you the risks22:57
ikoniayou disagree - thats fine, get on with it22:57
ikoniaI don't know why you are trying to convince me it will be ok - I thin it's a bad idea for the reasons I've suggested22:58
ikoniaif you think it's a good idea, don't ask if it's a good idea, and do it22:58
mTeKOh I know it's a bad Idea but the more I argue with you the more things you will remind me that I need to fix before I reboot.22:59
jonathan_zzikonia: this person never asked if it was a good idea and didn't even ask for your opinion, you just gave it.22:59
ikoniajonathan_zz: he did ask the channel if it was a good idea22:59
jonathan_zzmTeK: ;-).22:59
mTeKSo fstab and udev rules and I think ish it will work22:59
ikoniamTeK: no, I don't think it will work23:00
ikoniait can technically work - but the risks are not acceptable23:00
mTeKWorse case I have to drive, If I have to drive it's not that big of a deal but sitting in my recliner is better than standing in the DC for about 15min.23:00
ikoniaI disagree23:01
ikoniado a job properly23:01
ikoniabut it's up to you23:01
Mitchell92Hello... I really need a software program to do both school note taking and personal journaling / journaling and planning for projects. Microsofts OneNote sort of did the job, but not enough. I like the thought of a wiki. What steps would be best to take to just install a wiki on this machine? I just bought a new notebook and am running ubuntu. I'm open to the web server (apache, ngix or whatever...) taking requests from others on the netwo23:02
Mitchell92rk, but of course, I really need it to be password protected, like to login even if just to read.23:02
Mitchell92Might anyone have any suggestions?23:02
reisioMitchell92: few flat-file wikis you can use23:02
ikoniaMitchell92: would a basic text document be more effective23:02
jonathan_zzikonia: I didn't see that question (even though I scrolled) but nevertheless, you are forcing opinions onto him.23:03
ikoniajonathan_zz: I'm not forcing anything on to him23:03
ikoniajonathan_zz: as I've said multiple time - you can disagree and do it23:03
Mitchell92A wiki would be best as I like to link certain note topics to others I've taken. I'm basically asking for what wiki would be recommended if I were to have a wiki for personal use... and if ubuntu (Desktop) has a quick easy install for what's needed, be it apache, mysql, php, and so on.23:03
Mitchell92I'm running on a nice little notebook with a dual core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM23:04
jonathan_zzikonia: then don't be such an ass and just let the person be. You even go out of your way to command "do a job properly" when it is of no concern to you.23:04
ikoniajonathan_zz: please stop trying to create a problem23:04
jonathan_zzikonia: You are a problem, sir.23:04
ikoniajonathan_zz: the guy asked for advice opinion, I gave it and said you can ignore it / make up your own mind23:04
jonathan_zzikonia: you are basically harassing someone.23:05
ikoniajonathan_zz: re-read the conversation where I give pointers to the risks and problems and ask him to make his own mind up23:05
jonathan_zzwell I don't care, but it's what you're doing.23:05
ikoniajonathan_zz: no I'm not, he's asking in public channel for advice23:05
reisioMitchell92: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?PersonalWiki down at "don't need a server"23:05
ikoniajonathan_zz: if you don't care - please be quiet and stop trying to create an issue23:05
jonathan_zzof course you are23:05
reisioMitchell92: and 'stand-alone' after that23:05
jonathan_zzand shut up yourself if you care so much about it.23:05
briaperryhello23:06
Mitchell92great reisio thanks23:06
EriC^^hi23:06
reisio'lo23:06
ikoniareisio: have you actually used any of the flat file wikis ?23:06
reisioikonia: sure23:07
reisioikonia: have you?23:07
reisiowheeee polls23:07
ikoniareisio: no, not at all23:07
ikonia(certainly not that I'm aware of)23:07
reisiothey're like wikis... that use flat files23:07
ikoniareisio: is it really flat file - or something like (for example) sqlite23:07
reisioI imagine some of the "stand-alone" ones are using something sql-y23:08
reisiobut most of the ones saying "flat file" are probably just use a text file23:08
ikoniaI shall investigate your list23:08
reisioonly tried one or two myself23:08
reisioseemed like a thing worth being able to o23:08
reisioto do*23:08
reisioalthough, I know HTML so it's not something I've personally bothered with yet23:09
Mitchell92I've never used flat file wikis. I'm a computer science student and have extreme interest in software development and I also do web design on the side as a small business, I'm familiar with MySQL. I have no problem installing everything and have a full blown wiki. I just don't want to sacrifice bootup speed or performance on this nice new notebook if I use apache, mysql, etc. on it... It's a dual core i5 with 4GB of RAM, although 8GB of Cru23:09
Mitchell92cial RAM is only $20 on amazon with prime shipping... I'll get the 8GB of RAM soon once I evaluate how soon I need it based on all I'm doing.23:09
reisioreally just a directory structure and a markdown parser would do you if you didn't want to learn HTML, too23:09
reisiobut hey there are wikis/apps for it, so :p23:09
reisioMitchell92: you wouldn't sacrifice speed, but it'd remain immense overkill23:10
reisioto run a web server and relational db23:10
reisiofor something a flat file would do just as well23:10
=== Corey84|bitcamp is now known as linuxmodder
