[05:43] hii [07:31] morning [08:12] Morning all [08:42] morning boys and girls. [08:50] morning brobostigon [08:50] anyone here ever owned a kindle paperwhite ? [08:50] morning knightwise [09:16] knightwise: i do, yes. [09:19] brobostigon: are you pleased with it (which model do you have ? ) [09:20] knightwise: yes, it works very well, i have first gen paperwhite. [09:41] Is it very locked-in brobostigon ? [09:41] locked in? [09:41] I have a kobo at the moment and i'm pretty pleased with it , but i'm looking for something that just works when i turn it on [09:41] My kobo crapped out on my by resetting itself when i was in france this weekend [09:42] i needed to get online to get through the initial startup process (very annoying). [09:42] so it requires that i sign in and stuff like that , before i can use it. [09:42] yes, it certainly 'just works' [09:43] so just power it on and shove some mobi's on it and you're good to go ? [09:45] i have not tried mobi's on mine yet, pdf's work well, with a few formatting issues. [09:45] is it worth buying a new e-reader when i can get like a kindle 3 on ebay for £10? [09:45] knightwise: I had a kobo for a few years, but eventually decided to just use my tablet as an ebook reader [09:46] DJones: tried doing the same thing but reading on my ipad for a longer period gives me massive migraines [09:46] handy for my D&D DM handbook, :) [09:46] I have the kindlewhite knightwise, love it, use Caliber to transfer everything, never have wifi on :) [09:47] knightwise: I've not had that problem thankfully, mostly read white text on black background, the only issue can be reading in bright sunshine on a tablet [09:48] yeah , reflection is a bitch [09:48] (glare) [09:48] i have a kobo, but its a faff to strip drm from amazon books [09:48] should have paid the extra tenner to get a kindle [09:49] Ended up giving my kobo to my dad after his had an accident after being left out in 45C+ temperatures in full sun, the eink was never the same again [09:49] foobarry: i hate teh fact my kobo is "sponsored" with software from the online reseller (bol.com- [09:55] + the screen quality is not THAT awesome (I have a kobo Aura) [10:07] i discovered the key to cheap console gaming [10:08] foobarry: which is .... ? [10:09] Hurmph : No chance in hell I can get the new kindle paperwhite in Belgium [10:09] looks like i'll have to drive out to Germany to get one [10:22] knightwise: i ignored the console scene for 10 yrs [10:50] then bought an xbox360 for £25 [10:50] and games are £4 in cex :D [10:50] playing skyrim for the first time [11:00] i thought the new consoles had no resale of games? [11:01] whats "new"? [11:01] xbox360 is last gen [11:01] or is that only from xboxone onwards [11:02] skyrim is played offline [11:02] there's loads of bargain games for pennies since every kid owned it [11:03] zmoylan-pi: Also you can play some 360 games on Xbox One, they've been backporting it or something [11:03] foobarry: I do the same, buy lots of games for £4, some are still stupidly expensive though [11:03] GTA V is £9 i think [11:04] * zmoylan-pi remembers the 1.99 and 2.99 games from the 80s which i could buy 1 per week on pocket money [11:04] That's basically the equivalent of me taking the kids to Game and buying second hand games now :) [11:05] i'll be a while on skyrim but i need a footy game [11:05] and a fun car game (burnout paradise?) [11:05] Burnout is great unless your kids play it! [11:06] My youngest decided a "new game" would be better than "load game" [11:06] lost everything :P [11:06] aww [11:06] We all have seperate profiles since then [11:06] my son copied over all mario64ds save games . my wife nearly cried [11:07] serious xbox overheating issues though [11:11] White one ? [11:11] 250gb slim black one [11:11] lain flat it overheats [11:11] on side (tall mode) it seems ok [11:12] althugh i reduced to 720p and turned off wifi in case that was causing issue [11:12] Bit of compressed air works a treat too, mine was full of dust when i bought it [11:15] i always worry about removing dust from working systems as i have seen 1-2 systems die from the process... must have been load bearing dust... :-) [11:15] heh [11:32] and if you have the device on carpet raising it an inch or two with a book removes it's intake vents from sucking carpet [11:32] the number of times i have seen devices doing their best hoover imprssions till they die... [11:51] ah :) Found the amazon Kindle paperwhite in Maastricht. [11:51] 124 euros is about the same price as in .de [11:53] still .. if i count the price of a parking ticket ... === alan_g is now known as alan_g|lunch [12:03] i don't have carpets :) [12:04] knightwise: new kindle voyager coming soon? [12:25] yeah , but its a tad more expensive isn't it ? [12:26] the only thing you get is adaptive light sensors and a push button [12:27] but does the voyage also have the paperwhite option ? [12:28] apparently it does [12:36] So glad I bought the paperwhite, I was falling asleep with the light on a lot, the light would then wake me up 2-3am :/ === alan_g|lunch is now known as alan_g [14:10] received a leaflet from the government today about why they think we're better-off staying in the EU [14:11] I personally think there should be a three-way decision: 1) leave, 2) use DC's new deal and stay, 3) use the old deal and stay [14:12] * brobostigon got that leaflet too. [14:30] £9M well spent don't you think? [14:31] better than spending it on military... [14:33] i didn't get the leaflet [15:00] I am undecided on the EU [15:00] I tend to think "a plague on all your giant institutions" [15:03] but the eu is annoying cameron so it's got that going for it... [15:05] and the daily mail hates it so it must be good... [15:05] yes, that's my thinking. Look what the nazis are wanting and then vote the opposite [15:09] and then there's the words of humphrey appleby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37iHSwA1SwE [15:18] zmoylan-pi: lmao, that's an awesome clip [15:19] pretty much all of yes minister is excellent [15:19] yes, minister was a great show [15:22] the EU vote i predict will be quite high to stay [15:22] above 60% === zmoylan-1i is now known as zmoylan-pi [15:25] what was the % who turned out to vote for last referendum in england/wales? [15:30] I don't think scotland should be able to vote because they're insisting they don't want to be british :-p [15:31] obviously that's a troll [15:32] I also think the scottish referendum was invalid because england and wales didn't get a choice [15:33] while scotland was voting "we want to go it alone" vs "greater together", england and wales should have been voting between "let them stay if they want" vs "kick the dissenters out!" [15:33] (still trolling!) [15:34] !politics [15:34] Please take political discussion to ##politics-uk. Thank you! [15:34] :) [15:34] gah [15:34] (not trolling) [15:34] :) [15:34] j/k tho [15:34] next up... systemd... :-P [15:34] :-p [15:34] emacs! [15:34] oh god, that's the ultimate political discussion [15:34] vi! [15:34] * zmoylan-pi starts selling pitchforks... [15:34] flaming ones? [15:34] only in winter [15:35] otherwise it cuts into my torches franchise [15:35] upsell those via a multibuy [15:36] buy 2 get 1 free [15:37] bog off [15:37] no, wait, that should be bogof === alan_g is now known as alan_g|EOD [17:40] i think they should have a separate referendum in england, wales, scotland, ni. and if only one country picks leave, that country instead gets kicked out of the UK [17:41] (or rather also) [17:43] i prefer thunderdome... sturgeon v cameron in hand to hand... my money is on sturgeon... === m0nkey__ is now known as m0nkey_ [22:15] anyone here [22:16] ? [22:16] yep [22:17] daftykins: ok :) [22:17] daftykins: well then uhmm [22:18] daftykins: What do you think of this? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-intel-z8550-win-10-os-game-console#/ yes it could actsually run Linux as well. I guess it's a bit like that old Open Pandora project a Linux based one. [22:18] terrible idea [22:18] terrible idea why? [22:19] daftykins: apparantly the Windows 10 version would be free since it's for a small enough device. however this is also from China :d, but there's no web cam he h [22:19] to spy on [22:19] super niche, relies on external hardware running to be of any use [22:19] what do you mean it relys on external hardware to be of any use? [22:19] typical failtastic indiegogo fundraiser :D [22:20] daftykins: it's not going to fail based on fudning it's already funded [22:20] seems certain people aren't so keen on wehre buttons are though on the keyboard etc, going by the comments [22:20] ah i didn't even read that closely :D that's a shame then, more electronics into landfill / as door stops [22:20] that looks familiar [22:20] popey: yeah like the Open Pandora what I linked to? [22:21] I had seen something like that before, yep the Open Pandora [22:21] no, i know the open pandora [22:21] what I linked to looked familer ? [22:21] i thought I'd seen another portable windows device recently [22:21] maybe it was that one [22:21] popey: probably, they also got there thing for Android gaming, with more space going on there at the moment [22:22] seems like a nice idea, but it's pricey [22:22] the one I linked to the other one not as much [22:23] It's certainly a professionally made campaign [22:23] be interesting if they deliver [22:23] I think they will deliver [22:23] seems' its also a few guys behind that one or so, instead of just one or two as well [22:23] I'm interested in a portable device for playing old games [22:23] I thinik it's like a normal PC, but just small, and with game controlelrs in there to [22:23] tempted to make one out of a pi zero or pi 3 [22:23] popey: I like small... [22:24] a small PC with a screen etc, would be nice [22:24] I have a picade [22:24] want to replicate that in a small form factor [22:24] picade is a bit clumsy to cart around :) [22:25] popey: daftykins the also doing this one: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-xd-limited-edition-with-memory-of-128gb#/ [22:25] I don't think that one will reach there goal, since they hve already sold those with smaller space before, but that's ok it's on flexible funding [22:26] the windows one could at least run steam and stream games from a proper computer [22:26] as it could if it ran linux of course [22:26] popey: for old gaming this looks like could be inteersing: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-sinclair-zx-spectrum-vega-plus-console#/ campain over but could still buy the one that will be sold retail [22:26] but being x86 cpu makes it more flexible than an arm SoC [22:27] yeah, resisted that [22:27] want something more generic [22:27] popey: oh you nearly funded the sinclaire ? [22:27] no [22:27] i looked but resisted [22:27] popey: the WIndows on probabably can run Linux to, going by the comments I read, seems's it's got a UEIF bios etc to so [22:27] a few people had mentioend about Linux in comments [22:28] did you see that gameboy mod? [22:28] nope? [22:29] http://imgur.com/a/shoci [22:29] thats not the best one [22:29] * sebsebseb wants more money to buy a load more interesting t ech heh, but can sort of get by over time and get the kind of things wanted anyway [22:29] popey: they pay you good at Canonical, you seem to crowd fund a lot :d and you got a family [22:30] hah [22:30] lol [22:30] i don't crowdfund a lot [22:30] and mostly not expensive stuff [22:30] well I think daftykins and me saw a spread sheet the other week :d [22:30] yeah [22:30] hey leave me out of this one! [22:30] its public [22:30] intentionally so [22:30] i have no knowledge of this talk [22:30] daftykins: h eh [22:31] popey: yeah it's annoying isn't it, the good tech the inersting tech is usaully these days well let's say about 200 pounds at least [22:31] This is pretty darn sweet.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEDrMriKsFM&feature=youtu.be [22:32] Got a mycroft on the way soon [22:32] upgraded to a devkit [22:32] what's mycroft? [22:32] https://mycroft.ai/ [22:32] Adriono boys should be coming soon for me to yeah [22:32] arduino? [22:32] oooh, yeah, looking forward to Arduboy [22:32] then the pocket chip I should finally get and normal chip an that next month to [22:32] daftykins: yep Arduino [22:33] uh [22:33] uh [22:33] I emeant [22:33] Arduboy yeah [22:33] daftykins: https://www.arduboy.com/ [22:33] hard to tell when something isn't yet another fork these days ;) [22:33] then I got those pre orderdd Tetris cards some time this Spring to I guess, based on Arudboy [22:33] The mycroft is gonna be odd. It's using my voice :) [22:34] popey: is that your voice in the video? [22:35] popey: oh, can we all get a popey-croft? [22:36] sebsebseb: in one of the videos, yeah [22:36] diddledan: ya [22:36] \o/ [22:38] popey: which I just seen [22:38] one [22:39] popey: just seen the see mycroft in ation video [22:39] maybe you should hold off the fundraisers and treat yourself to a nice new keyboard, sebsebseb ;) [22:39] hah [22:40] man alive, mame takes an age to build on arm [22:40] took ages on a pi, now taking ages in a chroot on i7 4 cores flat out [22:40] my poor laptop [22:41] dicky stallman has written on the zfs issue: https://www.fsf.org/licensing/zfs-and-linux [22:41] daftykins: what my multiple lines has nothing to do with my keyboard :) , if that's what you meant and I'll do that on pretty much any keyboard [22:42] mobile i7s mmm [22:42] speaking of! https://www.dropbox.com/s/5x28ianwc89ltbz/IMG_20160411_174611.jpg?dl=0 [22:42] \o/ [22:43] sadly nothing else bar a damaged case which is being returned has shown up so far :P [22:46] see, what I don't understand is what's the difference between a kernel module which is distributed separate from the kernel which interacts with the kernel via defined apis (which dicky insists is a derivative of the kernel) and a program which likewise interacts with the kernel via defined apis (which dicky doesn't insist is a derivative) [22:49] I should probably play with zfs at some point [22:50] daftykins: \o/ [22:50] with zeez FS you are really spoiling us [23:34] bye [23:35] bye [23:51] ZFS is awesome
