BenderRodriguezjust ask your question00:27
raven-noiryeah ask it00:27
shanemikelstrange error on login with DP1.2 Daisy Chain.  It didn't happen till I switched from DP + HDMI to DP chain..  I get an error message with a huge list of resolutions, and the resolution/orientation is messed up, but when I open the display settings menu (without changing anything) it gets fixed00:28
shanemikelI cant figure out how to copy the text from the error window, though00:29
shanemikelthe monitors are rotated (one cw and the other ccw), and the res is 1920*1200 each.. the error msg says about CRTs, or somthing?00:32
raven-noirWhich version of ubuntu are you usisng?00:33

raven-noiri think i had the exact same problem00:35
raven-noirtrying to remember the steps how i resolved00:36
raven-noirIs this a problem with using external monitors?00:36
shanemikelhuh? it's a dual-head setup on a workstation computer.. and it was only a problem since I switched from using one via hdmi, and the other via DP cable, to the new DP daisy chain00:37
shanemikelwhere you connect the two monitors to eachother and only one to the video card00:37
raven-noirBut only one monitor's resolutions mess up correct?00:38
raven-noirHave you tired the Xrandr command and modeset?00:39
shanemikelumm.. I think both, and when I initially log in, my rotation settings are messed up, but when I close the error dialogue and open the display settings it fixes itself (without my changing anything)00:39
shanemikelI haven't done anything with xrandr directly00:40
shanemikelor was that a suggestion?00:43
raven-noirMore of a suggestion00:45
raven-noirIf it is a problem with rotation issues I would check display settings, for screen resolutions xrandr00:46
ubuntu_newbieHi, i just installed ubuntu today. After doing some changes, it won't start X anymore. It just hangs. Before I reboot, I was installing/compiling multiple librarries, then I removed the .tar and extracted folders as it complained I had only 200MB free. Rescue mode just hands as well after fsck which says "clean" . Any idea how I can figure out what went wrong ?00:46
ubuntu_newbieI can login from terminal 1 (F1). When I type startx, nothing happens either00:48

BlakeAnyone?01:52
xaxxonvervet, I used the vmware version where it mounts the "cd".   I run "sudo ./vmware-install.pl and it says "thie installer has detected an existing installation of open-vm-tools on this system and will not attempt to remove and replace these user-spoace applications..."01:53

ugmoe2000_ I've tried rmmod virtio_net; udevadm control --reload-rules; udevadm trigger --attr-match=subsystem=net;  but it keeps installing the old interface names02:00

xaxxon"installed some libraries"?03:02
shanemikelahh03:02
shanemikelthat sounds like a problem03:02
xaxxonexactly which libraries?03:03
newbieglib, automake , activeperl03:03
shanemikelit's never really safe to compile and install stuff as root03:03
shanemikelglib <--03:03
shanemikelthat's your proble03:03
xaxxonGLIB?03:03
shanemikelthat's a very important system library03:03
xaxxonuhh03:03
xaxxonwhat were you trying to do by doing that?03:03
xaxxonother than fk yourself?03:03
xaxxontime for a reinstall03:04
newbieI was trying to install an application and it complained about missing glib03:04
shanemikelyou probably needed glib-dev03:04
shanemikelusually you can find needed libraries in the distro, with -dev suffix or lib prefix03:04
shanemikelin this case.. libglib***-dev03:05
damntouristssudo apt-get install lib*03:05
newbieI see. I couldn't find it and downloade the tarball and installed it03:05
damntouristsjk don't do that03:05
elkyxaxxon: please try to not be condescending. new users make mistakes, no need to berate them for something they're already hurting over.03:05
shanemikelapt-file is very helpful too03:05
shanemikelelky: I just read it as an expression of empathy03:06
xaxxonnewbie, sorry :(   didn't mean to be mean.. but that's a start over to be safe03:06
damntouristshow much time would be wasted if you started over newbie ?03:06
elkyxaxxon: it was the few lines before reinstall i was talking about, just for clarity.03:06
xaxxonelky, I know03:06
newbiexaxxon: thats ok :)03:07
elkyxaxxon: just making sure. thanks for listening03:07
newbiedamntourists: well, i did alot of configuration for email and stuff03:07
newbieCan I back it up ? Is it in /home ?03:07
xaxxonback that up..03:07
shanemikelbut in general newbie, running third-party scripts as root (i.e. Makefile) is not very safe, and you should kinda know what you're doing.. it's usually a good idea to be really apprehensive about installing into system dirs for ANYTHING03:07
xaxxonno, probably not.  it's all system-wide stuff03:07
shanemikelespecially big projects03:08
damntouristsnewbie if you can, i'd back up your . dot files in /home/username/03:08
newbieok, and system settings, can I back those up ? As in wifi , vpn settings .. ?03:09
damntouristspersonally i tend not to03:09
shanemikelnewbie, clonezilla is great and easy to use.. you can also easily mount the backup images as if they are physical drives with a one-liner03:09
shanemikelif you can spare the space, it's not a bad idea because you don't run the risk of forgetting anything03:09
newbiedamntourists: why not ?03:10
newbieshanemikel: yes, I can spare some space to avoid this risk again03:10
shanemikelhuh?03:10
=== fginther is now known as fginther`
shanemikelno I don't mean about running out of space (that didnt' break your system).. I mean spare the space for a whole disk backup03:10
damntouristsnewbie it's never anything that takes me an abundance of time i guess.03:11
newbieshanemikel: Oh, a whole disk ? Can't I just choose settings folders?03:11
damntouristsyou could look into something like https://joeyh.name/code/etckeeper/03:12
shanemikelsure, you could, it's up to you03:12
xaxxon"settings folders" is more complicated than you think03:12
newbieetc and /home. Anything else ?03:12
shanemikelpersonally, I manage my dotfiles in a git repository, and the easiest way to do that is keep them all in one place, and symlink them everywher they're expected (.vim, .emacs.d, etcetera)03:12
xaxxonand it's entirely possible you might grab something "bad" if you start bulk grabbing folders and putting them back down after you re-install... perhaps unlikely, but you're in an awkward situation03:13
damntouriststhat's really it imo, if you've only gotten as far as setting up email and vpn from a fresh install03:13
shanemikelyou can also take a clonezilla image of individual partitions03:13
shanemikelI tend not to save the state dirs for most apps that do their config with a gui.. exception being firefox (for bookmarks)03:14
shanemikelmost are pretty easy to reconfigure03:15
newbieshanemikel damntourists xaxxon ok, I'll do a clean install and configure it again then I'll setup clonezilla. Thanks alot everyone.03:15

jatin30there is no msys channel ill try scons06:26
xaxxonjatin30, I hvae no idea what you're actually doing or running06:26
xaxxonjatin30, try #mingw06:26
jatin30thanks06:27
qwebirc816436Okay, this is wierd...06:28
qwebirc816436I tried that guide you have given me xaxxon. And I went to both domains and gave me the exact same page.06:29

xaxxonqwebirc816436, how did you go about testing?06:48
qwebirc816436Went to the domains06:48
xaxxonwhat does "go to the domains" mean?06:49
qwebirc816436And shows the exact same page.06:49
xaxxondo you have full registered names you're using?  did you set up something in your /etc/hosts?06:49
xaxxondid you telnet in and type the http requests by hand?06:49
qwebirc816436I have done anything in the /etc/hosts06:50
xaxxonthe more details you provide, the better we can help you find what is most likely a simple mistake you're making because you're making a bad assumption06:50
xaxxonsaying "I went to a domain" leaves way too much to our imagination06:50
qwebirc816436I am not making any assumption06:50
qwebirc816436I am just trying to get this to work is all.06:51
xaxxonif you can't tell us the specific steps you tried, we can't understand what else to suggest06:51
xaxxonyou are assuming you tested the process correctly06:51
xaxxonI want to know exactly what you did so I can validate that assumption06:51
qwebirc816436The guide you provided me, I did Step 1 to 606:51
qwebirc816436Twice but with different names.06:51
xaxxonYou will need to designate an actual DNS approved domain, or an IP address, to test that a virtual host is working06:52
xaxxonthat's why I asked you what DNS set up you have06:52
qwebirc816436Ummm06:52
qwebirc816436I use cloudflare?06:52
qwebirc816436To manage the Domain Names.06:52
xaxxonalso, step 8 is the testing...06:52
xaxxonso... I'm confused what you expected after doing 1-606:52
xaxxonand step 7 seems to be where you actually set up the testing06:53
xaxxonso when you say "I went to the domain", I'm not just going to trust that you did the right thing.. partly because I'm not even exactly sure what that means06:54
xaxxonor more specifically what that means to youp06:54
qwebirc816436On the browser, I went to the domains that I have owned.06:54
qwebirc816436And the Domains are pointed to the IP on the VPS.06:55
xaxxonok06:55
xaxxonis this http or https?06:55
qwebirc816436http06:55
xaxxontelnet to your server/port and type in GET / HTTP/1.1<enter>host: name.of.virtual.host06:56
xaxxon<enter> means press enter06:56
xaxxonand then do it again typing in the other virtual host name06:56
qwebirc816436I am confused.06:56
qwebirc816436I am not that good with VPS.06:56
xaxxontype "telnet 1.2.3.4 80"06:57
xaxxonwhere 1.2.3.4 is your ip address06:57
qwebirc816436in the VPS?06:57
xaxxonof wherever the webserver is06:57
xaxxonand 80 is the port of the web server06:57
xaxxonthen, type in without the quotes "GET / HTTP/1.1" and hit enter.  then type "host: your.virtual.server.name.com" and then press enter twice06:58
xaxxonrepeat that step but type in the other virtual server name (i.e. the other dns name)06:59
xaxxonthis is how web servers differentiate between virtual hosts... but we're just typing it in by hand to make sure it's getting the exact information we want it to get06:59
xaxxonthe "host: " header line, that is06:59

xaxxonqwebirc816436, also, I think this guide assumes you already have a web page up and running before you start07:01

I have high temperature problems which I rarely had on Windows.07:31

joakimkAkuli: me? Ubuntu 14.04 random freezes, every time :(08:21

Akulijoakimk: Check your graphics card drivers and upgrade the kernel.08:22
joakimkHow do you mean? :)08:22
brianxhp is really bad about not working without their code.08:22

AkuliBecause in linux the drivers are like kernel modules08:43
AkuliIf there's a problem they freeze the whole kernel08:44
joakimkI see08:44
AkuliThe advantage of having it that way is that you have a lot less driver installing to do on a fresh install than on windows.08:44

calebmillerkb3superfirelord42: heh, let me go double check what's in there09:56

alfatauikonia: I've not understood your last point: I've only one volume group and 2 logical volumes. to get inside the chroot of the os I need first to create the volumes, then format the volume (e.g. btrfs) and finally chroot into.13:11
ikoniaalfatau: sorry - I'll try to explain that again13:11
ikoniaalfatau: you're creating the thin LV's outside of the actual system (from the livecd) that means the vg config will be written to the "livecd" rather than inside the installed sysstem,13:12
ikoniaalfatau: so when you reboot, the installed system won't know about the lv's despite the installer being able to write to the filesystems13:12
alfatauikonia: ok. but how to create the vg config from inside the installed system, if to install the system i need the vg with lv's?13:14
ikoniaalfatau: you'll somehow have to get the vgconfig into the chrooted target during the install/post install but before the reboot13:14

NyctophiliaHello, I have a problem with the tool expect under Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I want to automate ssh logins to some Sophos UTM Firewalls and evelate my rights directly after with "sudo su -" and the correct password. I don't have to worry about plain text passwords, because my script runs directly out of the KeePass URL field (doubleclick executes the script and fills it with the correct passwords via18:31
Nyctophiliaagrument/KeePass {Placeholder} behind the script).18:31
NyctophiliaI managed to get all of this done, except for not having a remote-root shell, which is not executing any commands and "dropping the connection" back to my ubuntu system. So the command I'm trying to run remotely is not excecuting for 3-5 seconds and then gets suddenly executed on the ubuntu system. Without telling me what happened.18:31

AkuliSeveas: You're sure he used your command?18:46
AkuliNice18:46
fenecoalso I was counting the value without -/+ buffers/cache18:46
NyctophiliaSeveas: I could make it work like that under windows machines with the ssh client kitty, instead of putty, it has a -cmd switch, so you can execute some commands after connect. So it says -cmd sudo su-\p\n\{PASSWORD} (\p inserts a 1-sec pause). So this is the point that is getting me confused about linux terminals. If I'll add a command to the shellscript like "whoami" with send (from expect),18:46
NyctophiliaIt'll execute this command remotely, after that, the same weird problem occurs. So by that I mean the non-reacting terminal for a few seconds and the drop-back to the ubuntu shell.18:46
SeveasAkuli: I'm not. The output just shows he didn't use the tee -a :)18:46
SeveasNyctophilia: try at least ssh -t instead of ssh to enforce allocating a PTY. See how that goes.18:47

Jordan_Uscalper: For UEFI, the standard installation will create an entry in your boot firmware pointing to Ubuntu's grub installation. And the grub installation will be setup such that this firmware entry is needed to boot Ubuntu.19:51
scalperJordan_U: is there any data that gets on the hdd?19:51
scalperah ok19:51
Jordan_Uscalper: For a UEFI installation, unless you really do something wrong when selecting options in the installer, no.19:51
scalperand is this boot firmware located on the internal memory of the bios itself?19:51
Jordan_Uscalper: Correct. It's on a little flash chip connected to your motherboard.19:52
scalperah ok, usefull information19:52
scalperJordan_U: but it isnt technically possible to exclude that information, because i livecd will also bootup without using that part of the flaschip19:53

Jordan_Uscalper: So, I would recommend that you do a normal installation then boot from your new Ubuntu installation. Then from your new Ubuntu installation we can do three things. 1: Configure Ubuntu so that it will boot on any UEFI machine, not just the one you installed to 2: Remove the UEFI entry and 3: Make sure that future updates don't add the entry back (since it would be unpleasant to be working on your19:54
Jordan_Ufriend Bob's computer and have it leave a UEFI boot entry behind when you're done).19:55
scalperok19:55
Jordan_Uscalper: Step one is very easy, you just run "sudo grub-install --removable". Note that you'll want to run that manually any time grub-efi-amd64-bin gets updated.19:56
Jordan_Uscalper: For the second step you'll use the tool efibootmgr to remove the "Ubuntu" entry in your boot firmware.19:56
scalperclear to me19:57
Jordan_Uscalper: For the third step you'll run "sudo apt-get remove grub-efi-amd64" note that this won't actually remove grub's UEFI support, that's in grub-efi-amd64-bin. Due to unfortunate dependencies though, it will remove grub's secure boot support. What it will do is remove the package that automatically runs grub-install on upgrades.19:59
Jordan_Uscalper: Sorry, I have to leave.19:59

New2LinuxHi guys23:21
New2LinuxI face a problem when I try to install this program (wolf's cpuminer)23:21
New2Linuxand this is the link to download its source :23:21
New2Linuxhttps://github.com/wolf9466/cpuminer-multi/archive/master.zip23:21
New2Linuxit is a software to mine crypto currencies using cpu23:22
New2Linuxthis software depends on 2 things : 1- libcurl4-gnutls-dev (which depends on libcurl3-gnutls version "7.22.5") 2- C library called (jansson)23:22
New2LinuxI use Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) on 32-bit cpu(x86) and my (/etc/apt/sources.list) is configured correctly so I can locate the needed packages to install the two libraries that listed above23:23
New2Linuxbut when I try to excuate (sudo apt-get update) then (sudo apt-get install libcurl4-gnutls-dev) I read something like this on my terminal:23:23
New2Linuxunable to install for unmet dependcies23:24
New2Linuxlibcurl4-gnutls-dev depends on: libcurl3-gnutls (7.22.5) but it is not going to be installed23:24

New2Linuxit seems that there is a recent version (7.35.XX) of the (libcurl3-gnutls) installed on my distro so it conflicts with the old one (7.22.5) that I try to install and when I tried to uninstall it and install  the old needed one(7.22.5) I've failed23:25
