iMadperMany users complain to me our ubuntu16.04 daily build can not be installed on skylake systems. Any chance to enable i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 by default?05:02
daxthat parameter isn't needed for linux 4.4, which xenial has05:04
iMadperdax: I just tested'd it on thinkpad x1c 4rd. The param is still needed.05:05
* iMadper let me remove it and reboot to test it again.05:05
daxskylake support was removed from preliminary in 4.3. if you still need it, that wouldn't match my skylake testing results05:05
* iMadper oooops...05:06
iMadperdax: Yeah, you are right...05:07
daxokay good, was hoping there wasn't yet another skylake complication to worry about :)05:07
lotuspsychjesome nice skylake news on phoronix.com also :p05:09
daxthe mjg59 thing or...?05:13
dax'cause if so, that's only on mobile thankfully. plus i got it straight from mjg59's blog feed :)05:13

k1lwait, is this s kubuntu?13:36
brainwasharca_vorago: the service is enabled tho13:37
brainwasharca_vorago: check "journalctl -b -u lightdm"13:37
arca_voragoIt started out as a normal 15.04 install, at some point I installed kde and it started saying kubuntu... not sure why13:37
brainwasharca_vorago: there are logs in /var/log/lightdm also13:38
k1larca_vorago: kubuntu/kde needs the ssdm since 15.1013:38

arca_voragossdm?13:39
k1l*sddm13:40
k1lthat is the *dm for kde now13:40
arca_voragoI don't use kde, it's just installed, and sddm is installed13:41
BluesKajarca_vorago, sddm is needed, it should be installed by default in 16.04 , drop  to a VT/TTY (ctrl+alt+F1-F6) and login at the prompt , then run , sudo systemctl enable sddm , then sudo systemctl start sddm, then reboot13:43
brainwashwhy reboot?13:43
arca_voragoany reason I cant just do "sudo systemctl enable sddm" from a normal term?13:44
brainwashyou can13:44
BluesKajweel if you have a desktop then do so , ar13:44
brainwashI thought he wants to fix his lightdm13:45
brainwashso, disabling sddm would be the way to go (in case it's enabled)13:45
BluesKajbrainwash, he's on kde/kubuntu , sddm is the defualt DM13:45
brainwash"It started out as a normal 15.04 install, at some point I installed kde and it started saying kubuntu... not sure why"13:46
brainwashI see no reason why lightdm should not work anymore13:46
BluesKajbrainwash, lightdm was probly removed during the install13:47
brainwashhe is able to start it manually13:47
brainwashwell, let's see if he returns..13:48
arca_voragoOk, rebooted, when I tried to start sddm its exiting with a dependency error13:49
BluesKajarca_vorago, ok then login with ligtdm or the VT , with the VT startx to get to the desktop13:50
arca_voragoalready logged in via lightdm13:51
BluesKajarca_vorago, updating and upgrading might bring in the required dependenies13:52
arca_voragoAlready fully updated/upgraded13:52
arca_voragomaybe remove sddm and reinstall13:52

wuzzibit of a problem... I think compiz is crashing. I am trying to run gnome-flashback amd when I do a "metacity --replace" the session crashes and I go back to lightdm. session runs fine but there is no window decorations. the flashback-compiz session just crashes. :(13:59
arca_voragoThanks for all your help everyone. went to tty, disabled sddm, enabled lightdm, rebooted, all works. I guess for some reason both were trying to start so neither would work at boot, but since I knew lightdm was working and sddm wasnt that was my clue14:02
DirtyCajunwhat statement do i need to put in my release-upgrades to allow to upgrade to final beta?14:03
BluesKajDirtyCajun, just run updates  and upgrades and  full-upgrade on the release day and you should be up to date to the official release on thursday14:40
BluesKajasuming you have Xenial installed already14:41
DirtyCajunso apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get full-upgrade ?14:49

brianxi'm having trouble finding the .desktop file for an app.  i correctly installed something outside "Software" by unzipping it into a folder and running it.  then i locked the icon to the Unity Launcher.  where does this place the .desktop file?19:07
chowderHey guys. I'm trying to install some stuff and I keep getting the same error: Bad header line [IP: 91.189.91.23 80]19:14
chowderare any of the repos frozen or is access limited until the release date?19:14
chowdernot sure if the error could be on my end as that IP takes you to the Ubuntu security notices page19:15
squintybrianx,   sudo updatedb ->  locate .desktop | grep <app name>19:17
brianxsquinty: that was an early attempt.  nada. :-(19:17
squintychowder: maybe try another mirror19:18
brianxdoes locking an icon to the launcher even create a .desktop?19:18
squintybrianx, you did run that first command (sudo updatedb)?   if the desktop file was generated it should show up after updating the database19:20
brianxi ran the updatedb first.19:20
brianxsquinty: after updatedb in a root shell, as me i also ran: grep -i cubemx `locate .desktop | grep "\.desktop$" | tail`19:23
brianxminus the tail.19:23
brianxminus the tail. works much better.  tail was to keep my screen less cluttered by testing the `` program. :-|19:24
chowdersquinty: how would I change mirrors?19:28
squintychowder,  bring Software and Updates19:29
squintyup19:29
chowdersquinty: ok19:29
chowderIs it the "download from" field?19:29
squintychowder:  you should also see a provision for automatically setting the best server19:30
brianxthanks squinty.19:30
chowdersquinty: awesome, thanks19:30
squintybrianx,  yw  wish I could offer more.  fwiw, that second command you pasted doesn't seem to work here.  will check it out a little later for myself  :-)19:31
brianxsquinty: grep -i executable `locate .desktop | grep "\.desktop$"` should be much more usable.19:32
squintybrianx,  took your original paste and then subbed "thunderbird" for you cubemx   weird lol19:33
brianxsquinty: this search avoids the possibility that the app and the executable are not the same name, in my case i was 100% sure of the executable (because it's what i ran in my terminal) but not the app name19:33
gregLbrianx, Look in usr/share applications19:34
brianxgregL: that is where it got created.  :-)19:34
gregLbrianx, Yes I have several custom launchers and I put them there..19:36
brianxmy issue turned out to be case.  the file is STM32CubeMX.desktop and grep was for cubemx.  then my better command had the |tail left on it by mistake. (also preventing a successful find)19:36
squintybrianx,  hmm...weird it didn't find it then as partial names should be locate and you use grep -i to eliminate the capitals letters19:38
brianxi had left the |tail from testing (developed the command in steps)19:39
squintybrianx, ahhh..  :-)19:40

MoPacHello. I'm experiencing some pretty bad errors that I think are graphics-related with 16.04 Unity, and I'm not sure the best way of troubleshooting/reporting them. Example: in LibreOffice (5.1), dialog boxes have been rendering badly (garbled text, missing boxes, flashing, etc). And sometimes doing work in dialog boxes, like telling LO whether to recover a doc or not, crashes the *entire* session.20:50
