[05:46] can i remotely update my pc at work via console / ssh? [05:46] im aware you can just use update-manager -c [05:46] then there's also the old school way of .. updating sources.list and just doing an apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade [08:27] IS IT OUT!!!!!!!!!! [08:33] not yet - late October sometime [09:15] two days of no updatss :( [09:24] why [09:24] ??? [09:24] two days no updates? [09:35] because it's been released :p [10:06] is there a special channel for unity8? [13:02] http://www.infoworld.com/article/3060246/security/ubuntu-snap-doesnt-have-the-security-issue-x11-does.html [13:02] X11 is insecure when used with Snap applications according to this [13:22] nedstark: hey [13:22] hello [13:23] nedstark: using gnome3 natively now... all thanks to you [13:23] absolutely superior to unity :) [13:23] no 2-monitor issues [13:24] daed: i used to have screen tearing until i switched to gnome 3 and its derivative cinnamon (from a ppa). [13:24] nedstark: i had extreme screen tearing in chrome/firefox in xfce [13:25] no issues in gnome3 [13:25] i spent like 2 hours tweaking chrome settings, rendering options/flags/etc... nothing helped [13:25] tweaked xfce's compositor [13:25] ultimately it just sucked [13:25] some say you can fix it switching to compton in xfce, but it persisted for me [13:26] nedstark: best part is expose style functionality exists in gnome3 by default with a hot corner [13:26] i literally didn't have to tweak anything [13:27] though i'm still going through the tweak tool [13:27] once you tweak it, it's pretty good, assuming you don't prefer a task bar [13:27] i do not prefer a task bar, i prefer hot corner window expose [13:28] cinnamon has the same kind of hot corner, except desktop search and app menu are accessed through the menu button at the bottom [13:28] i also prefer launching things through launchy or alfred type apps [13:28] its a fork of gnome 3 [13:28] alt-space [13:28] then i can type stuff in [13:28] on demand [13:28] launch/search/etc [13:29] the gnome search can look for a lot more than apps too [13:30] where's gnome search? [13:30] when you use the hot corner, it appears in the top center of the screen, you just start typing into it [13:30] oh that [13:30] i wonder if there's a way to configure to trigger it with alt-space [13:32] probably, they might know on #ubuntu-gnome or #gnome [13:33] you can access search using the super (windows) key [13:35] hmm, doesn't work for me === red__ is now known as Redbeardt [13:40] https://wiki.gnome.org/Gnome3CheatSheet [13:41] i'm not sure why that key wouldn't work, maybe the gnome guys would know === JanC_ is now known as JanC
