EngiHello, is this where I can ask for help with Kubuntu?02:51
krytarikEngi: Yes.02:52
EngiOkay, well, I'm using Kubuntu 14.04 with three monitors. One of them has a native resolution of 2560x1080 and it isn't available as an option. I'm using nvidia 304.131 video drivers. I've tried to get this to work using cvt, and xrandr newmode and addmode, but I get an error BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)02:55
EngiI'm also dual booting Win10 and it supports it just fine on this hardware. Is there anything I can try to get it to work on this resolution?02:56
EngiAm I doing something wrong? Should I go look somewhere else?03:14
WitherSlick<Engi> Am I doing something wrong? Should I go look somewhere else?03:16

EngiSorry, I posted my problem earlier and haven't gotten a reply for about 15 minutes. I can repost.03:17

coder25I just  reinstalled Kubuntu 14.04 this time without LVM. I believe some app is verifying the system is up to date and slowing things down. The disk usage light is on. How can I stop this?04:28
coder25Rephrase: I completed the reinstall yesterday. Today the system sometimes is slow with the disk usage light on. ???04:34
coder25Rephrase 2:  The original install was LVM, with /boot as a separate partition, only very small, and the boot partition was full, old kernels of Linux could not be removed. Knoppix 7.4 refused to see the LVM partition. The new install without LVM has everything in one partition except a 2nd partition for the swap file.04:37
coder25I just configured Muon to not show notifications of available updates.04:57

markslawsince everything seems up to date, what do i have to do to get the video driver to change to the correct one?14:31
tytanDo you know if there is an official page showing the system requirements for Kubuntu 16.04 LTS? I still have a ThinkPad T61 and I'm thinking about installing it on it.14:32
BluesKajmarkslaw, it is installed14:33
markslawokay, so why is the screen dropping to black intermittently? if it's not the driver, what could it be?14:34
BluesKajmarkslaw, try removing the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver14:34
markslawapt-get remove?14:34
BluesKajyes14:34
BluesKajwith sudo, not root14:35
markslawokay, let's give it a shot.14:35
BluesKajthen you may have to reboot14:36
markslawthat was the next question. see you on the flip14:36
BluesKajty I have 16.04 on my lenovo G500 laptop, runs great14:36
BluesKajty^14:37
BluesKajhe's gone14:37
markslawi'm back14:39
BluesKajso no black screens or drops14:40
markslawdriver manager still greys everything out and i'm still dipping to black intermittently. this is not good14:40
BluesKajma forget about driver manager for now it's being worked on it's broken14:41
BluesKajmarkslaw,^14:41
markslawso it seems.14:41
markslawany other thoughts other than another reinstall?14:42
markslawor would reinstalling do any good?14:42
BluesKajI wonder if the fglrx driver will work with your gpu ..ati. is such a difficult brand to match up drivers14:43
markslawhow do i get it?14:43
markslawyou suggested earlier that I tweak the compositor. the screenshot is at http://imgur.com/gallery/JjzFTL9/new. what do i need to tweak there, if anything?14:46
Smurphynicofrand: You using a USB disk ???14:47
SmurphyI don't have issues copying 50Gb image on my external disk. ext4FS.14:48
BluesKajmarkslaw, try the OpenGL3.114:52
markslawokay. do I need to reboot now?14:53
user__Hi, when I install kubuntu 16.04 , I did not find ZFS file system , why ?14:54
user__I can't  choose ZFS as file system for root.14:54
soeeuhm14:55
BluesKajmarkslaw, any notice popup after changing to 3.1?14:55
markslawnot so far. should I reboot, I wonder14:56
BluesKajmarkslaw, no reboot needed14:56
soeeuser__: maybe read through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/ZFS14:56
markslawokay. now let's try something, streaming video, which usually caused it14:56
BluesKajmarkslaw, forget the fglrx driver, it's not suitable from what i found on the forums14:57
soee!zfs14:57
ubottuFor information concerning ZFS and Ubuntu, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZFS14:57
markslawso far so good. could it REALLY  have been that simple?!14:58
user__Is possible install KUbuntu with ZFS as file System for root ?14:59
BluesKajmarkslaw, sometimes it is14:59
soeeBluesKaj: when it comes to OpenGL 3.1 Martin said once that not all animations are supported when using it - just a note from my side14:59
soeehe suggested to use 2.0 :)14:59
soeeuser__: i have no idea, if there is not such filesystem in installer15:00
soeeuser__: maybe try to ask on #ubuntu15:00
user__ok , thanks15:00
markslawjust dropped to black again. not good. any other ideas/15:01
BluesKajsoee, yeah , but 3.1 is worth trying when the screen drops to black intermittently, not gonna worry about a some animations in that situation15:01
aguiteldolphin take long time to delete or move files , nautilus do it right15:01
soeeBluesKaj: true15:01
WitherSlickAny word on getting the Driver Manager to worK?15:01
soeeWitherSlick: there is a bug report on launchapd15:01
WitherSlickOh cool15:02
BluesKajmarkslaw, nope, other than checking your monitor connections15:02
soeeshadeslayer: suggested to run some command do debug it, one moment15:02
markslawso would another clean install do any good, do you think/15:03
markslawor should i revert back to 15.10?15:03

ubottuLaunchpad bug 1530523 in kubuntu-driver-manager (Ubuntu) "kcm_driver_manager: Infinitely shows Collecting information" [High,Incomplete]15:03
BluesKajnop point markslaw wait for the debug command that soee is gonna provide for the driver manager15:03
BluesKajmarkslaw, guess not that's about nvidia15:06
BluesKajabove15:06
markslawcould it be that the video card itself is dying and that's what's causing the headaches?15:07
soeemarkslaw: you ant latets nvidia drivers to be installed ?15:07
soee*you want15:08
BluesKajmarkslaw, I don't see how the driver manager is going to solve your problem since it lists only available drivers of which you have 2 choices, the radeon or the ati , May removbe the radeom and install the ati , this time15:09
BluesKajcorrection: maybe remove the radeon and install the ati15:10
BluesKajit won't hurt to try15:11
WitherSlickBluesKaj: I run an intel setup, and the driver manager allows me to use propriatary firmware for microcode, which seems to improve my performance15:13
WitherSlickit worked fine in KDE 15.1015:13
WitherSlickKubuntu I mean15:13

BluesKajenhancement even15:35
markslawit's installed. has been. now what?15:36
markslawi keep coming back to the card itself dying. what would the symptoms be?15:37

BluesKajmarkslaw, I had a nvidia card that just quit, there was no inyernittenyt blackouts or anything like that ..btw did you check your pc and monitor conncts...I have to ask15:41
BluesKajconnects15:42
BluesKaji need more light again ...suddenly very dark ....rain clouds15:43
markslawBluesKaj: I disconnected and reconnected the monitor this morning, as well as removing and reinstalling the card itself. If it was a connection issue, that should have cleared it.15:53

dbromhello all installing a 32 bit version of 14.04 and not able to get flash to run right. meaning that i install the plugin and it still doesnt work16:06

markslawbluekaj: I just opened up the computer and found that I have a radeon 5450 video card. I installed the driver using apt-get. Since this doesn't specify a praticular card, I'm guessing that this is pretty generic.16:20
BluesKajit's in the muliverse repos16:20
BluesKajmarkslaw, which driver did you install ?16:25
dbromok, its installed o when I go to run a flash game it says your adobe flash is out of date16:27
nicofrandSmurphy: no, it's a hard disk inside a Icy Box (with RAID etc., but I don't use it)16:29
markslawapt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon16:29
markslawis there a command for a more specific driver/16:29
BluesKajmarkslaw, finally found the driver recommended for your card, sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu16:33
markslawxserver-xorg-video-amdgpu set to manually installed. What does this mean and how do i do it?16:35
BluesKajmarkslaw, remove the ati or radeon, whichever driver you just installed16:40
BluesKajor both then install the amdgpu16:40
markslawthen apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu, right?16:41

BluesKajmarkslaw, that's an older card, but still a a decent one16:47
markslawas long as it works..16:48
BluesKajyup16:48
markslawso if i was right and it was the driver that was mismatched, the glitching should stop. keep your fingers crossed and thanks.16:50
BluesKajit was difficult to find the right info for that card , but ti think that's the right one, markslaw16:51
markslawwe'll know in a few minutes. here's hoping.16:51
dbromBluesKaj: I have installed adobe flash but the browser still says that its out of date16:55

bodomHi there! Did somebody already tried 16.04? Did it improve stability?17:08
BluesKajimprove stability over what?17:09
bodomBluesKaj: over 15.1017:09
BluesKajbodom, it's officially released , all kinds of users have installed it17:09
bodomBluesKaj: great, my chances of getting some feedback are improving :) Are you one of them?17:11
BluesKajit's a new release, expect a few bugs ...don't poll, you have to try it for yourself17:13
bodomBluesKaj: I am not understanding. Is it considered bad price to ask other user's opinion on a new release?17:15
BluesKajbodom , I can't compare i haeb't used 15,10 since 2 weeks after it was released , been using Xenial since then17:16
bodomBluesKaj: What do you use it for?17:18
BluesKajmostly as my media server, irc and surfing17:19
Maxirideehya, got a problem with Dolphin and a samba share. It keeps asking me for usr and pwd even if they are correct. Via windows I can access it without problems using the same account credentials.17:20
Maxiridewhat's wrong with dolphin then?17:20
bodomBluesKaj: you are lucky :) For such narrow needs, you are unlikely to experience any problem.17:20
BluesKajbodom, I'm a home user ...retired17:21
BluesKajMaxiride, make sure the dir that you want to connect to is shared by your user17:23
MaxirideBluesKaj: yep my user is allowed to access it. Got the administration panel of the NAS (where the samba share live) open now17:24
bodomBluesKaj: I've been using Kubuntu from 10.10 to 15.04. Then when 15.10 came out, I decided to move away: too many problems. But I am still interested on the project and looking to move back to it, that's why I am asking for other user's feedback once in a while :)17:24
Maxiridebodom: I've used 15.10 almost since it's release. Indeed there were some bugs but it was usable - for me -. Upgraded to xenial yesterday, everything works fine so far17:26
bodomMaxiride: thank you for feedback. Did the upgrade keep your setting/preferences?17:27
BluesKajbodom, if you are having problems on the job, afaik 16.04 solves a lot of the 15.10 troubles, that's all i can tell you. There some graophics proibs with ati/amd gpus17:27
Maxiridebodom: yes, all of them. If something has changed I've yet to notice it.17:29
MaxirideBluesKaj: I could also enable a NFS access, but I've never used it and don't know how to access it via dolphin17:31
Maxirideif I type nfs://ip it gives me a mount error17:31
MaxirideCould not mount device.17:31
MaxirideThe reported error was:17:31
MaxirideFailed to mount /share/1000/Backup_Federico17:31
bodomMaxiride: that's a good start :) The KDE4->5 upgrade in 15.10 washed everything away. Do you know is there are still unported kde4 appas around? I i can remember correctly kmymoney, k3b, kgpg and many more were still kde4 in 15.1017:32
Maxiridebodom: can't tell.. I use a base install of kubuntu without the apps17:33
Maxirideso I don't have any of them installed17:33
Maxirideactually I don't have cd reader for k3b ^^17:33
equinox_who know a command to retrieve information from a wavfile, like samplerate, length,... ?17:33
bodomMaxiride: oh. You are lucky too then :D In my experience, basic/simple installs rarely give troubles :)17:34
BluesKajwhat error message do you receive when trying to connect?17:34
BluesKajMaxiride,^17:34
bodomequinox_: did you try mplayer?17:35
bodomequinox_: it usually given a lot of info before starting playback17:36
equinox_no I don't even know it;17:36
MaxirideBluesKaj:  no one, just the login window pop up again. I'm googling to find where samba logs are kept in the system17:36
equinox_I don't want a player17:36
equinox_I need to retrieve information on 68.000 wavfile17:36
bodomequinox_: if i can remember correctly, it has an option to only give info and do not play17:37
equinox_using a player will be too long I guess17:37
equinox_interesting17:37
=== StrongBit is now known as _0xbadc0de_

Maxiridesorry for that, didn't knew that copy\paste automatically send the message in konversation17:40
akikequinox_: have you tried ffprobe or avprobe?17:41
BluesKajMaxiride, try nusing the dolphin network/add network folder option17:41
bodomMaxiride: it looks like it is a security level incompatibility. I can have the server support better security (better) or have your client accept a lower security level.17:41
bodoms/I/you/17:42
equinox_akik, that's exactly what I want ! thank17:44
Maxiridebodom: I'm at home so I could accept a lower security level17:44
Maxirideregarding the server accepting an higher security level I wouldn't know where to start to modify it17:44
MaxirideUsing the add network folder option doesn't work as well17:45
BluesKajMaxiride,  what error?17:46
Maxiride"Unable to connect to server.  Please check your settings and try again." using the windows network folder option17:46
MaxirideI could give a try also to WebDav protocol since I can also enable it on the NAS17:46
akikMaxiride: i have encrypt passwords = yes in smb.conf and then created the passwords with smbpasswd17:46
bodomMax so try "client NTLMv2 auth = no" in your smb.conf :)17:46
BluesKajso the NAS uses a NTFS file sytem, Maxiride?17:47
MaxirideBluesKaj: don't think so, it mounts a linux system17:48
bodommaybe it's a samba3, is it an old NAS?17:49
Maxiridethis is the admin control panel: http://plugout.net/fvdw-sl/home.php17:49
Maxirideit's a lacie cloudbox with a custom firmware17:49
Maxiridelinked a message ago^17:49
Maxiridethe samba share is the default for every File Share17:49
BluesKajMaxiride, then use the secure shell(ssh) option in dolphin add network folder17:49
bodomI see it's from 2003. It's not unlikely it only supports old NT unsafe auth.17:51
bodom*201317:51
Maxiridethe ssh seems to work, but it's still "loading" the remote folder17:54
Maxirideand by remote I mean the NAS next to me xD no over the internet connection17:54
Maxiridebodom: by the way I don't have this line ""client NTLMv2 auth = no" in smb.conf17:58
bodomMaxiride: i know it, that's why i was suggetsing you to try adding it17:59
bodom:)18:00
Maxiridethanks eveybody for the support! ;)18:04
akiki guess you got the samba mount working?18:07
Maxirideakik: sadly no, and the ssh try keeps loading.. so I'm using the FTP access with works18:08
Maxiridebut I didn't wanted to bother too much18:08
akikdo you have that encrypted passwords in smb.conf ?18:09
Maxiridenope18:09
akiki use that and can mount the share from both win8 and ubuntu18:09
Maxirideshould I add the line manually?18:09
akikonly thing to do is run the smbpasswd for each samba user18:10
Maxiridethe smbpasswd command should be ran on the NAS I suppose, which is the host of the samba share. I'm the client with my pc18:10
Maxirideright?18:10
akikyes on the samba server18:10
Maxiridethat's an issue because there is no command line option in the firmware18:11
akiksmbpasswd -a username18:11
akikoh well :)18:11
Maxiridebut I guess it's done automatically when I created my user on the NAS control panel18:11
Maxiridedinner time here, got to cook something =)18:12

kubuntu_I am a Kubuntu newbie19:11
SantiSRhi.. i am having problems when the windows is doing something with the windows... the refresh of them are not working well... just i have instaled 16.04 of kubuntu19:11
SantiSRany help???19:12
kubuntu_To have IRC is a kind of blast from the past19:12

Ian_CCan anyone her me?19:13

Ian_CSantiSR: Yeah, I just updated to 16.04 and now my PC won't boot at all.19:15
bodomlan_C: don't panic, it's a classic :)19:16
Ian_CIt's no panic, just a hassle bodom - I'm running off a usb key atm. I have lvm on my normal drive, just not sure how to get it fixed.19:17
bodomIan_C: do you have any error message?19:17
Ian_CNope, just a blank screen.19:18
bodomIan_C: not even the grub menu? (do you know what grub is?)19:19
Ian_CI think I just need to reinstall grub but I tried to make  a boot-repair and that also failed. Yeah, I know what grub is!19:19
Ian_Cgrub2 these days!19:20
BluesKajIan_C, UEFI boot ?19:20
bodomIan_C: if grub does not start, then it's a real problem :\19:20
Ian_CHmmm, yeah, UEFI is in the mix although I have all that switched off in the BIOS19:21
Ian_CI have efi on sda119:21
Ian_CThen I have sda2 and sda3 which is the main linux prtition19:22
bodomIan_C: you cold start by chrooting into the installed system and trying to reainstall grub19:22
BluesKajyeah, but you still have uefi boot partition that needs grub installed to it19:22
Ian_CI think sda2 is my linux boot partition and sda3 is the lvm partition19:22
Ian_CWhen I try chroot I get a /cow error19:23
bodomIan_C: "cow"?19:23
Ian_CYeah, I know!19:23
Ian_CReally19:23
Ian_CI say sudo chroot and it replies with an error saying it can't find /cow19:24
bodomIan_C: to correctly chroot, you must first mount the directory structure into a folder, then bind mount sys, dev, proc, and finally chroot. It requires some deeper linux knowledge19:25
Ian_CI'll find the exact error19:25
Ian_CYeah, I did all of that19:25
Ian_CWait a bit, I'll show you the messages19:25
Ian_C.....you wait, time passes19:26
Ian_CThis will take a while!19:26
Ian_CI started with sudo fdisk -l19:29
Ian_CIs it OK to just cut and paste the outut?19:30
Ian_Coutput19:30
bodomIan_C: I do not know the chan rules, but usually it is required to use something like pastebin.com19:30

Ian_CThere's a whole pile of ram entries in there too but I didn't bother with them - sda is the main thing19:34
Ian_Csdb is the flash drive that I'm running off atm19:34
Ian_CSorry, sdc now - I forgot I have 2 flash drives plugged in19:35
bodomIan_C: so you have the EFI partition, the root, and the LVM?19:37
bodomIan_C: I am sorry, I do not know grub-EFI enough to help19:39
Ian_CYeah, I think so - sda1 is efi, sda2 is boot and sda3 is lvm?19:39
bodomIan_C: sda2 is probably root19:39
bodomIan_C: oh, wait, 244M.... should be boot19:40
Ian_CLOL bodom, neither do I! I have all that efi nonsense switched off, as much as it is possible.19:40
bodomIan_C: maybe you should try switching it on because it looks like you are using it :P19:41
Ian_CNoooooooo19:41
Ian_CThat just makes things worse!19:41
Ian_CI can't avoid having it19:41
Ian_CBut I have legacy support on19:42
bodomyou are using gpt, and, as far as i know, gpt is efi only19:42
Ian_CYeah19:42
Ian_CThat's about right19:42
Ian_CThe problem is that I've screwed up grub, but I'm not too sure how to fix it@19:43
Ian_CI dunno where it should be!19:43
BluesKajIan_C, the only method to work around the uefi /gpt system that MS uses is to wipe the drive and make the partiton table msdos and use legacy bios settings, but I doin't recommend it ...it's only used as a last resiort19:43
bodomIan_C: what lvscan says?19:44
Ian_CThat's far too extreme19:44
Ian_CNever even heard of that, let me try it19:44
BluesKajIan_C, it may be extreme to you but it worked well for me :-)19:46
Ian_Ckubuntu@kubuntu:~$ sudo lvscan19:46
Ian_C  ACTIVE            '/dev/kubuntu-vg/root' [459.12 GiB] inherit19:46
Ian_C  ACTIVE            '/dev/kubuntu-vg/swap_1' [5.89 GiB] inherit19:46
bodomIan_C: ok, start by mounting /dev/kubuntu-vg/root into /mnt19:47
bodomIan_C: then have a look at /mnt/etc/fstab19:47
Ian_CI'm sure this is just a simple linux kernel/grub issue.... I don't want to loose all my stuff just cos I'm too stupid to pick the simple option!19:48
Ian_Ckk I'll try that....brb19:48
bodomIan_C: well, your "stuff" should be there in /dev/kubuntu-vg/root. You can back it up before doing anything else19:49
Ian_CLOL! Back up?19:51
Ian_C# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>19:52

Ian_CUUID=F977-B773  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       119:52
bodomIan_C: it means making a copy of everything and storing it safely :)19:52
Ian_CHeh heh! It's the bits that I can't back up that I will miss, eg window placement and font sizes.19:53
bodomIan_C: ok, so you should reconstruct the structure: mount /dev/sda2 into /mnt/boot and then /dev/sda1 into /mnt/boot/efi19:54
bodomIan_C: there "bits" are in /mnt/home/<your_user_name> and you can back them up too19:54
Ian_Chttp://paste.ubuntu.com/16039577/19:55
Ian_COK, I'll see if I can do all that then, here's hoping!19:56
Ian_CI need a pen and paper now!19:57
bodomIan_C: well, "all of that" is just the beginning :P19:57
Ian_CTo say I have the memory of a goldfish would be insulting to goldfish!19:58
bodomlol19:58
Ian_CYeah, I know, this is obviously just the beginning, if I didn't enjoy it I'd use windows!19:59
Ian_CSooooo, once I mount those drives, which I have done, what's next?20:04
bodomIan_C: you should have a look in /mnt/boot/efi/grub, and there you should find "something"20:04
Ian_CLOL! OK, I shall do that!20:05
bodomIan_C: sadly, that's where my efi knowledge ends :\20:05
Ian_CLOL, my knowledge ended far before this point! I seem to have my mount points wrong...20:07
Ian_C"/mnt/boot/efi/efi/ubuntu$ "20:08
Ian_CSeems like there are too many efi's in there20:09
Ian_CI think I picked a bad week to give up smoking!20:11
bodomIan_C: mhhh I am not sure if the doube efi is a problem. It is never a bad week to give up smoking :D20:12
BluesKajIan_C, good to hear you gave up the smokes20:15
Ian_CWell I stopped on or around the 20th of March, I didn't give up, as my brother keeps pointing out! But I really want to be violent right now, I know that there is a simple 1-2-3 to get my poor lappy working properly again. I think it's just a kernel issue.20:15
Ian_CScooter, vodka and ecigs will get me through it!20:16
Ian_C just need to get grub to look in the right place, I think20:18
Ian_CI think I may have deleted the wrong kernel actually.20:18
Ian_CSynaptic deleted it, it was't me guv!20:19
RedStickHamhello20:20
Ian_CHiya RedStickHam20:20
RedStickHamanyone updgraded 14.04 to 16.04 yet?20:20

clivejojust trying to catch up with the backlog20:26
Ian_CI fell asleep on my keyboard and when I woke up my screen was blank!20:26
clivejo<Ian_C> I think I may have deleted the wrong kernel actually.20:26

Ian_CA blank screen20:27
Ian_CI can't even shift for the grub menu20:27
clivejofrom the start, no text flashing by or the boot logo?20:27
BluesKajRedStickHam, make sure your package manger is set to upgrade to the next LTS, you can use apt-get to upgrade your existing system to the latest packages first. Then sudo do-release-upgrade in the terminal20:27
Ian_CAnd I made a boot-repair usb key and that doesn't work either20:27
Ian_CNope20:28
clivejoany error messages ?20:28
clivejoas to why it wont repair?20:29
Ian_CJust a blank screen after the usual bios messages20:29
bodomIan_C: so you straight upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04? you are brave :D20:29
Ian_Cboot repair does give a message to do with moving a db20:30

Ian_CI'm not computer illiterate - I spent 15 years as a cobol programmer, so I know a little bit about computers, but not too much about linux, my computers were much bigger!20:32
BluesKajLTS to LTS is usually fairly simple , but with kde4/plasma 4 being replaced with kde/plasma 5.5 , that's a  major change20:33
Ian_Cclivejo: Hmmm, not sure, I'll see if I can find the message20:33
Ian_CI keep getting a message saying that /cow is not available20:40
Ian_Cfailed to get canonical path of `/cow'20:41
Ian_CThat's the one that keeps coming up when I try to sudo chroot sudo update-grub20:42

Ian_CI'm hanging around on this channel in the vain hope that someone might be able to help me but so fsr no joy.21:06
RedStickHamNot new to linux, but new to Kubuntu21:07
Ian_CRedStickHam: It's probably cos you have your package manager set to only update to stable packages.21:07
RedStickHamthat is possible21:08
