SporkWitchanyone know how to get mapping hotkeys to specific virtual desktops (apparently now called activities) to work?  I mapped keys, but no matter what it won't actually switch to them when i hit the key combos00:04
SporkWitchonly way that seems to work is to open the virtual desktop list with meta+q and click one with the rat00:04

JMichaelXthe 'driver manager' does not seem to be working, so far. it has been 'collecting information about your system' for like 2 hours now04:16
SporkWitchJMichaelX: i see the same here04:17
SporkWitchshortcuts for virtual desktops (now called activities) don't seem to work either04:17
JMichaelXman, it would have been great if they'd just focused on letting KDE 4 mature for a few more years...04:22
SporkWitchJMichaelX: i'm not entirely sure that's the issue.  yeah, there's some bugs like that, but the big problems seem to be related to making things "easier" for end-users, and making them less useful in the process.  Take the regional settings now.  "detailed" apparently means "no control beyond a country drop-down," time settings don't let you specify an NTP server or force a sync, and virtual04:34
SporkWitchdesktops have effectively been removed (can't set different widgets or wallpapers on each, meaning you can either use widgets or use virtual desktops, but not both)04:35
SporkWitchi'm in the process of trying to use activities (since they're trying to force us to) for the same purpose as virtual desktops, but thanks to the fact that the shortcuts to switch directly to an activity don't work, i can't.04:36
valorieSporkWitch: that is a problem within Qt itself05:03
valoriepersonally I wish we'd stayed with Klocale but someone has to maintain such things05:04
valorievolunteers are always welcome05:04
valorieKhaotic: deleting ~/.kde/ ~/.cache/ ~/.local ~/.config ?05:05
valoriewhat on earth were you thinking?05:05
valoriewhen you logout and back in, you'll get nice new rather blank (default) versions05:06
valorieand have to set up everything again05:06
SporkWitchvalorie: which is? the shortcuts not working, or the daft "settings" for time format and such?05:07
valorielocale = time settings05:08
valorieshortcuts not working seems very random -- a few people have problems, most don't, but we've not found a pattern to it yet05:09
valorieI wonder if it might be permissions problems, but chowning the home folder doesn't often seem to fix it05:10
SporkWitchvalorie: i can confirm that the perms on the home folder were completely FUBAR after install, but that was easy enough to identify and fix, and it's been rebooted since that05:10
valorieon driver manager, the maintainer is looking into it05:10
valoriebut again, seems very random05:11
valoriedriver manager for me works instantly05:11
SporkWitchvalorie: it'll let me set shortcuts to specific activities, and that's preserved when i reopen the settings (haven't rebooted since, yet), but they don't actually work to switch activities, and i'm trying to make them work exactly like virtual desktops used to and should05:11
valorieplease talk to Ivan in #plasma about activities05:12
SporkWitchit's not as big a deal on my desktop, but on my laptop the changes to virtual desktops, combined with this bug with activities, has completely crippled my productivity05:12
valoriehe's interested in making them work for the users05:12
SporkWitch(it's got me considering distro shopping for the first time in nearly a decade)05:12
SporkWitch(i HATE distro shopping)05:13
valoriefor the virt desktops, there simply was no maintainer to step up05:13
valoriefree software is made by people who step up and contribute to the things they want05:14
valorievolunteers are always welcome05:14
SporkWitchi saw some comments on a bug report that imply otherwise.  the tone of the dev comments was "people are using them how we want activities to be used anyway, so we deliberately removed the functionality so you'll use activities instead"05:14
valorieuntrue05:14
valoriemany people use virt desktops within activities05:15
valoriesome comments on bug reports are unfortunate on both sides of an issue, for sure05:15
SporkWitchtrust me, i know, and most of the commenters in that thread used both.  but now that they REMOVED the ability to have different wallpapers and widgets on each virtual desktop (which was present in KDE4), they can't, and are left with exponentially more activities to achieve the same effect05:16
valorienasty user complaints sometimes get nasty devel replies, which is unfortunate05:16
valoriedevels are just people too05:16
SporkWitchit was a bug report, not a nasty complaint, because such functionality disappearing rightly appears like a bug05:16
valoriewell, the person who stepped up to improve activities is not interested in virt desktops05:17
valoriehe's interested in better-functioning activities05:17
valorieyou can't blame him for working on what he loves and prefers05:17
SporkWitchclearly; if shortcuts to switch straight to them would work, it'd at least be manageable.  don't like being forced to use them, but if it's what i have to do to maintain my functionality and workflow, i'll bend over and take it05:18
valorieSporkWitch: I've not read that bug report, so I wasn't labelling it specifically05:18
valorielike I said, please work with Ivan to see if it can be done, and if so, how05:19
SporkWitchi use kubuntu so that i DON"T have to spend more than 5 minutes after the install configuring things to my liking; if i wanted to spend a couple hours doing it, i'd use something like arch lol (and i don't, want turn-key lol)05:19
SporkWitchfair enough; that's his name on here?05:19
valoriein #plasma05:19
SporkWitchyeah, but that's his handle?05:20
valorieIvan|athome or so, often05:20
SporkWitchk05:20
valorieand I understand your desire not to spend time configuring05:20
valorieI love that about Kubuntu as well, and we want things to work well for our users05:21
valoriethere is a distinction between the work we (Kubuntu) do (bugs on launchpad) and that of KDE devels (bug reports on bko)05:22
* valorie works in both05:22
SporkWitchi get that; i know KDE != kubuntu05:22
valoriegood05:22
SporkWitchi raised my question in both channels, since it resulted from the switch to 16.04 (i always use LTS releases, again, to minimize my time spent working on the workstation, and maximize the time spent on the work the workstation is FOR)05:23
valorieI often see ubuntu questions in #kde, and for instance gnome or arch questions here!05:23
SporkWitchi love the new aesthetic, just not the reduction in functionality05:23
valorieafaik Kubuntu doesn't set up keyboard shortcuts etc. -- that is set up in KDE Plasma defaults05:24
valoriethat said, we have a "kubuntu-settings" package05:24
SporkWitchmaybe one thing you could help me with, if this doesn't work out.  on the DM login screen it has a dropdown to select other WMs.  Is there any trick to getting one i install to show up there?  Are there any i can just 'aptitude install foo' and have show up to select?  If i have to switch, i've been thinking of checking out some tiling WMs05:25
valoriebut I'm not a coder, I've not worked with that or even looked inside05:25
SporkWitchyeah, i set the shortcuts, they just don't do anything once they're set lol05:25
valorieDM as in sddm?05:25
SporkWitch(they're not mapped by default, have to go into the settings and map them)05:25
SporkWitchif that's what kubuntu is using, yeah05:25
SporkWitchthe display manager (DM) would be the thing that provides the shiny graphical login screen, rather than loggin in at the terminal and then typing "startx"05:26
valorieyou should be able to install any of the desktops, such as unity-desktop, gnome-desktop, etc.05:26
valorietiling WMs, not sure05:26
SporkWitchthe window manager (WM) would be KDE, and desktop environments (DE) tend to bundle a DM and WM (like KDE does)05:27
valoriewindow manager is Kwin05:27
valorieand indeed that is part of plasma, but people do run plasma with other WMs05:28
valorienot sure why05:28
* valorie is a fan of plasma and kwin05:28
SporkWitchinteresting; didn't realize they segregated the two05:28
SporkWitchyeah, some of the widgets are handy.  I particularly like the different performance monitors and the folder views, but they're less useful when i can't have different sets of them on different desktops05:28
valorieespecially with all the work on Wayland, the code has become much less intertwined05:29
SporkWitchhence trying to make activities do what virtual desktops used to05:29
SporkWitchthis is the first i've heard of wayland in ages, i was beginning to think it was vaporware lol05:29
SporkWitchis it being used in 16.04?05:29

SporkWitchgotcha05:33
SporkWitchvalorie: is it possible to make a window display in all activities?05:58
valoriewhat sort of window?06:00
SporkWitchan application window (same functionality as "pinning" with virtual desktops, so the window appears on all virtual desktops)06:00
valoriethe main problem I have with activities is that they mostly work with KDE applications, whereas I heavily use Chromium, for instance06:00
valoriesad but true06:00
SporkWitchso say i have a browser window open, the SAME window (not program) would be open on all06:01
valorieKonq used to win, but no longer does.....06:01

SporkWitchvalorie: so apparently yes, you can make a window appear on all activities, so yeah, all that's needed to reproduce proper virtual desktop functionality is for direct shortcuts to be fixed, so i don't have to cycle through them all with meta+tab07:01
valorieoh very good07:02
SporkWitchif someone else asks, it's in the alt+f3 menu -> activities.  there's checkboxes for each activity and an "all activities" radio button07:02
valoriethe kub podcast guys want to do one on activities07:03
valoriebecause they all use them differently07:03
SporkWitchi don't see how; it's just another name for virtual desktops. the only difference is that they're buggy, lower performance, and (the one good thing) you can tie power settings and similar to specific activities (e.g. to prevent screen sleeping in "video" but not in others).  shoot me a link, i may have a low opinion of them, especially since i'm being forced to use them when i don't want to, but07:05

prof7bitand the updater that comes up when I click it is not the old program anymore that it used to be but this strange new application http://storage3.static.itmages.com/i/16/0425/h_1461601868_4292145_18b2937a72.png with the half baked unfinished UI that has no configuration at all, not even a menu17:28
prof7bitthe unfinished unusable UI and the missing configuration makes me suspect it is some Canonical (K)ubuntu thing and does not belong to native KDE17:31
prof7bitbut whatever it is and wherever it comes from there must be a way to configure the auto updates but I cannot find it.17:35
prof7biti found out its name: its "plasma-discover" and its UI is really broken: http://storage5.static.itmages.com/i/16/0425/h_1461606116_1692249_e6415a15b0.png17:41
prof7bitSo this is supposed to be the new LTS version of Kubuntu?17:42
marco-parillo16.04 LTS, correct.17:46
Zren_prof7bit: No idea where it's suppose to be running apt-get update17:47
Zren_but you could always add it to crontab17:47
sithlord48prof7bit: run kdesudo /usr/bin/software-properties-kde --attach 0 --dont-update (thats what discover runs to config updates)17:47
sithlord48discover is not for power users but noone has steped up to maintain muon :(17:48
prof7bitsithlord48: what does the --dont-update option do?17:54
prof7bitsithlord48: "thats what discover runs to config updates" <-- I have not found anything in discover to open this (or any other) configuration dialog, what do you mean by "thats what discover runs to config updates"?17:56
prof7bitwhen does it run that?17:56
sithlord48when you click on the menu -> advanced -> configure software updates17:59
sithlord48dont--update makes it not run apt update after you close the config dialog17:59
sithlord48prof7bit: to the right of the search bar should be a menu button (||| but vertical)17:59
denza242Should I upgrade to 16.04 from 15.10? Or should I wait a bit? I heard there's some bugs with plasma in 16.04 at the moment.18:00
prof7bitsithlord48:  http://storage5.static.itmages.com/i/16/0425/h_1461606116_1692249_e6415a15b0.png18:00
Zren_Most anoying thing about discover is that it doesn't show the package name in the detail view.18:01
sithlord48yeah i seen that in your screen shot18:01
sithlord48prof7bit:  that is why i provided you with the command to launch the dialog18:01
Zren_It shows the addon package names, but not the one you're about to install. :/18:01
prof7bitoh, this empty area responds to mouse clicks18:01
prof7bitbrilliant UI18:01
sithlord48your missing the icon for that on mine its shows correctly18:02
prof7bitI can remember a time when there were menu bars, easy to use, intuitive...18:02
sithlord48crtl + M should get you a menu bar if it supports one..18:02
sithlord48i like the menu bar also18:02
prof7bitbut nowadays meverything must look like the crippled UI on a mobile phone, even if it makes it almost unusable18:03
sithlord48gotta support touch screens like on my laptop (that never get used)18:05
prof7bitthere must be a service that does the downloading of the updates, how is this done, is it a systemd job, is it a kde service? What is its name? Maybe I am missing some Package that was not installed for some strange reason when I upgraded from 14.04 -> 15.x -> 16.04?18:06
sithlord48iirc its just a cron job . what does that dialog say for autochecking (mine is set daily)18:07
prof7bitdaily, download only.18:08
sithlord48maybe change the setting a reset it ?18:09
prof7bitI remember the downloading has worked a few weeks ago before it suddenly switched to this discover thing instead of the old updater18:09
prof7bitwhen I did apt-get dist-upgrade everything was already downloaded and it began unpacking immediately but this was weeks ago18:10

blaataapI am in a kubuntu 16.04 live session trying to open my camera by usb. The thing says "kio camera plugin not found".18:16
blaataapkio_kamera actually18:17
sithlord48blaataap:  maybe install kamera ?18:18
blaataapit's installed.18:19
prof7bitsithlord48: it seems I do not have any cron job set up here for *any* user at all. Do you know which package configured this, maybe I can reconfigure it18:19
blaataapnow I try to load the SD card directly into my computer, and it is not getting recognised, loaded or mounted.18:19
sithlord48prof7bit:  no idea18:19
sithlord48blaataap:  how big is the card?18:19
blaataap8GB18:20
prof7bitI guess I must set up a virtual machine with a fresh ubuntu and see how it is supposed to be configured there18:20
sithlord48yeah prof7bit sorry idk where its configured18:20
blaataapit used to work (at least the card) in my previous 16.04 install18:21
blaataapbut I just want to know how to access it now.18:21
sithlord48blaataap:  well i was gonna say be sure to install exfat but @ 8gb it could be fat32 format..18:21
blaataapi just want to take a picture off18:22
sithlord48if the disc is formated exfat you need to install the exfat-fuse package to be able to mout it18:22
blaataapit should show up in blkid right18:23
sithlord48the disc yes the formating no18:23
blaataapi don't see any dmesg when I put it in either.18:23
blaataapit worked like a week ago and I never touched the motherboard or anything.18:24
sithlord48blaataap:  so you don't see it in lsblk?18:25
blaataapno. How can I manually access the camera (on usb)?18:25
blaataapoh lsblk didn't use yet, sorry18:26
blaataapcamera doesn't show up in lsblk18:26
blaataapit's a different protocol18:26
blaataaphow can I mount it?18:26
sithlord48the camera wont only the sd card18:26
sithlord48using the KIO18:26
blaataapwhich doesn't work.18:27
sithlord48lests start over.. blaataap when you plug the sd card in to you see it in lsblk?18:27
sithlord48if you do and you can't mount the card try installing the exfat-fuse package . alot of cameras today will use exfat as the format of the card (for a few years now)18:31
blaataapno, but I'm using gphotofs now on the camera :).18:31
blaataapok18:31
sithlord48my camera (cannon rebel t3i) will not work with the kio in dolphin and i can only get my pictures off using digikam18:32
blaataapI'm done, thanks, still no clue about the sdcard, but I have to get on.18:32
blaataapoh ok18:32
blaataapgphotofs is easy, you only need to specify a mount point, and you can use it as a user :)18:32
blaataapthanks, gotta go though.18:32
blaataapxx18:32
sithlord48blaataap:  later18:32

MrSassyPantsBluesKaj Negative, it's not a missing wifi driver, i've installed & tried different ones and the wifi would appear to be working. Other people seem to have the same error when creating non-wifi connections: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=232155319:47
keithzgHrmm time to remember the systemd blame command, 'cause booting is taking *way* longer now with 16.04.19:54
Unit193systemd-analyze blame19:54
Unit193Or plot19:54
keithzgUnit193: Oho, I didn't even know about plot. I'm assuming that makes a fancy graph19:56
Unit193keithzg: Of course.  -analyze has a few handy options.19:57
keithzgHuh, took almost 14 seconds to mount a local BTRFS volume, which appears to have held many things up. I wonder why it took so long.19:57
MrSassyPantscc BluesKaj_19:59
BluesKaj_MrSassyPants: guess it depends on the wifi chip brand, some are more linux friendly then others. I just did a clean install of 1604 on my laptop which has the bcm431320:00
BluesKaj_then=than20:00
MrSassyPantsBluesKaj_, I guess it's not the wifi: http://askubuntu.com/questions/761646/intermittent-networkmanager-error-on-importing-ovpn-files-or-editing-such-conne20:00
MrSassyPantsor it is the wifi but it's new to 16.0420:02
* keithzg reboots to see if things the slow mounting can be fixed as easily as it might appear (enabling space_cache on the btrfs drive).20:02
keithzgHuh, "sudo service $servicename disable" doesn't actually work anymore?20:10
keithzgI guess I'll deign to try and use systemctl instead.20:11
* keithzg reboots *again*20:12
keithzgYeah *that* worked to disable the service in question. Hrmm. So the old "service" command isn't reliable anymore? That's unfortunate.20:16
Unit193keithzg: Are you sure you don't mean  update-rc.d disable  ?20:17
keithzgUnit193: I've always just used "service servicename enable/disable/start/stop/restart/reload/etcetc"20:23
Unit193keithzg: Manpage in trusty doesn't indicate anything about 'disable|enable'.20:23
keithzg*shrug* I dunno, it didn't spit out any complaints when I ran it either though.20:24
keithzgHrrmmm it doesn't spit out any complaints no matter what I try, actually.20:25
Unit193Just passes it along to whatever.  Anywho, there is a compatibility layer, fwiw.20:25
keithzgFair enough, I do always forget about update-rc.d (in part because the .d keeps making me think it's just a config directory somewhere)20:26
Unit193Indeed, odd name.20:29
Unit193keithzg: In case you didn't see/notice, systemctl disable sync'd the init script too, as updaterc does for systemd.20:31

markslawdriver manager in System Settings has a ? over it. I know that this means it's compromised. The question is how do I correct it?20:51
soee?20:52
addtruI did install kubuntu 16.04 today. But, to my complete surprise, the package "pppoe" was not available on system. So I could not connect to the internet. Tried to setup the connection via network manager, but was unsuccessful. I don't have a router but connect directly to fast Ethernet. Usually I would type sudo pppoeconf and that triggered a text based interface where I would put my credentials for ISP. Anyone had this issue?20:55
soeeuh im not familir with it20:56
valorie!pppoe21:06
ubottuSetting up an ADSL/PPPoE connection? Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE21:06
valorieaddtru: ^^^21:07
valoriemarkslaw: can you provide a screenshot?21:07
addtru<ubottu>  correct, but the package ”pppoe” was missing from kubuntu 16.0421:07
valoriewhat do you mean by "compromised"?21:08
valorie!info pppoe21:08
ubottupppoe (source: rp-pppoe): PPP over Ethernet driver. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.11-0ubuntu1 (xenial), package size 68 kB, installed size 245 kB21:08
valorieit is not missing21:08
addtruIn ubuntu 16.04 is present,but in kubuntu 16.04 32 bitis missing21:09
valoriebecause it was not on the DVD doesn't mean it is missing, just that it was not installed by default21:09
addtruI got it21:09
addtrubut still, I found this very silly21:09
valorieaddtru: we all use the same archive, since Kubuntu IS ubuntu21:09
valorieour ISO was over-size, and we had to cut out everything not essential to most people21:10
addtruif you do not believe me, i can mail the dvd to you :)21:10

TerminalVelocityjust upgraded to 16.04.  I'm loving it thus far, with one glaring exception.  i have 2 monitors set up.  and, on the left monitor, i've configured the KDE plan to be displayed at the bottom of the screen on the LEFT monitor.  when i lock my screen, and return by supplying my password, the KDE panel is re-arranged to display on the RIGHT monitor.21:41
TerminalVelocityhow do i keep the panel locked in one place21:42
valorieTerminalVelocity: you should be able to set that up in "kscreen"21:42
valoriefound in systemsettings21:42
valorieor just type alt+space which brings up krunner, and then type screen and choose from the dropdown21:43
TerminalVelocityValorie: yup, i tried that using system settings...i set things up just the way i wanted it ... then, it moves from the LEFT monitor to the RIGHT monitor after I unlock my screen21:43

valorieTerminalVelocity: you can check in #plasma for sure21:46

TerminalVelocityvalorie: ok, thanks for the suggestions21:47

TerminalVelocityvalorie: i sure hope so...b/c this was working just fine under Kubuntu 15.1021:48
valorieas the only user, it used to be our prerogative to upgrade it, but now Ubuntu proper also uses it, so upgrades must go at their pace21:48
valorieTerminalVelocity: then please consult with the devels in #plasma and perhaps file a bug about it21:48

blaataapdo you suppose the system will get in trouble if you remount /tmp some time after boot?22:41
blaataapI mean before logging in as a user (in kde) you mount an encrypted /tmp on top of it, hiding the old one.22:42
valoriewhat would be the point of that?22:42
blaataapto have an encrypted volume for it that is unlocked after boot.22:42
