BastinenzHi everyone! I'm having kind of a weird problem in Xubuntu 15.10. For the record, I've been using Xubuntu on this machine since 13.04, upgraded for some new releases, but had to "reinstall" (while keeping my home directory, though) a couple of times because the Distro upgrade didn't work. This also happened when I upgraded to 15.10, but my system seems to be operating fine now, aside from this one little issue…01:08
Bastinenzafter the system has been running for the time, I can't get it to properly suspend or shutdown any longer. It just throws me back into the login screen, no matter if I use the GUI to log out, or do shutdown via terminal or tty, even as root. Don't get any error messages and the system doesn't crash or anything, all that happens is that I get back to the login screen.01:09
Bastinenzany idea what might be the issue or where to start looking? btw, dmesg doesn't seem to contain any relevant information either, it certainly doesn't get any new messages when I try to shutdowm01:11
Bastinenzthe weird thing is that after hard shutdown and reboot, I can suspend and shutdown without any issues. but eventually the system goes back to the buggy behaviour01:13
s455wangBastinenz: are you using kexec reboots?02:27
Bastinenzs455wang: I actually have no idea, that's a completely new topic for me. presumably I am using whatever the default for xubuntu is02:29

gameslayerhey everyone I have a question I am upgrading my system to the 16.04 LTS release, is it ready to use?11:46
knomegameslayer, read the release announcement (and notes) and figure out if it's stable enough for you11:56
knomeif you are upgrading from 15.10, you'll have to upgrade in a few months anyway11:56
gameslayerWell for any users from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS is it fine to upgrade?11:59
knomegenerally it's recommended to wait until the first point release (16.04.1) is out for LTS upgrades12:00
gameslayerAh ok12:01
knomethat's also when your system will prompt for an upgrade12:01
gameslayeryeah I understand12:02
gameslayerso you should ultimatly wait til your system says to upgrade12:02

ColinB Newly installed 16.04 across three machines on local network. Any idea why .bashrc isn't being read when I ssh in to one machine from another? Its working fine when I log in on the console, and I can simply '. .bashrc' once logged in....  Command line is 'ssh -Y hostname.local'16:49
JuJuBeeIs it not advisable to do-release-upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04?16:53
knomeJuJuBee, it's suggested to wait until the first point release is out16:54
JuJuBeeTimeframe?16:54
knome16.04.1 will most likely be released in august16:55
JuJuBeeOk16:55
JuJuBeebut then should I do clean install or upgrade path?16:55
knomethat's for you to decide16:55
knomeunless something else is said on the release announcement for .1, both ways are supported16:56
JuJuBeeI was reading in a forum that 16.04 is a completely different animal....16:57
knomesure it is16:57
JuJuBeeSo maybe a clean install is waranted16:57
knomebut since the LTS->LTS upgrade path is available, the goal is to actually support that16:57
knomeagain, that's for you to decide16:58
knomewhatever you do, take backups16:58
JuJuBeeIt is interesting that when I do-release-upgrade now, it says  no new release found...16:58
knomethat's because it isn't generally suggested to upgrade to 16.04 until the first point release (as i said above)16:59
JuJuBeeThen why not leave it in beta until it is accepted as "ready" ?17:00
tsaavikbecause its ready to use, just not ready to upgade to17:00
knomewhat tsaavik said is close to the truth, but there really isn't a simple answer to the question17:01
JuJuBeeSo is it suggested to install it as a clean install now? or completely wait for the .1 release?17:01
Unit193non-LTS users were already prompted to upgrade.17:01
knomeit's up to you to decide...17:01
tsaavikI upgraded because I was having dropbox issues, other then gnome-terminal dropping support for --title I had no real issues.17:01
knometsaavik, why are you using gnome-terminal anyway when you could use xfce4-terminal?17:02
knometsaavik, which supports a corresponding -T parameter btw17:02
tsaavikbecase I can't find a way to map ctrl-left/right to switch tabs. I'm using xfce4-terminal now until gnome-terminal gets fixed17:03
Unit193From what I understand gnome-terminal also re-wraps lines better, and bug numbers are clickable.17:04
tsaavikit also has profiles which is kinda nice (I set faint red background on production), but not a deal breaker for xfce417:04
tsaavikYour suppose to be able to change the keyboard shortcuts in xfce4-terminal via 'Editable Menu Accelerators' but dosn't seem to work, for me atleast17:05
knometsaavik, you need to enable the feature from the settings manager first17:06
tsaavikI did17:06
tsaavikhttp://docs.xfce.org/faq17:06
tsaavikI did not restart X however17:07

subscioushello. I installed pipelight as described on the pipelight homepage. netflix worked once afterwards but won't load a video anymore. It just stalls at the screen it shows while buffering a video in advance. I rebooted once used a useragent for windows with firefox 44 and it gave an error about drm licensing. When trying again it also stalled. after an additional reboot and using the agent, it once worked with, it just stalled again.20:50
subsciousdoes someone know how to fix this problem (get netflix running with silverlight through pipelight)?20:50

rflemingGreetings!21:36
rflemingSince 16.04 and the switch to gnome software manager... I cannot install .deb packages.  It tries to install, but then fails.  I presume that's because there is no access because I'm never prompted for a password21:38
rflemingam I missing something, or is something broken?21:38
q3we4tre464tPromotion the idea not use the name the daemon in Linux for the programs. I am a reasonable person, me not satisfied the fact that the program has the name daemon in the OS. Against the name the angel, I have nothing. Although the name the angel in the operating system would not be need. VOODOO OS? I not want use the operating system which have in the program the name a daemon.21:42
terminatorsan someone help me install kwin21:42
ondondilrfleming, I'm not an expert but it seems to be a known bug. I've found some nice explanation here http://www.howtogeek.com/252981/how-to-install-deb-packages-without-ubuntu-software-in-ubuntu-16.04/21:44
Unit193rfleming: Is it supposed to?  Last I knew it didn't, but my information could be old.  I'd recommend the old dpkg -i or gdebi as a backup.21:44
Unit193(gdebi also has a cli interface, though.)21:45
rflemingUnit193, I don't know about gnome-software, but the older ubuntu software manager had no problem21:47
rflemingit appears gnome-software fails to prompt for credentials and dies21:47
Unit193Indeed it used to support it.21:47
rflemingI have no problem using gdebi or dpkg -i...21:47
rflemingjust wanted to make sure this problem isn't related to something I did :)21:47
xubuntu70wcan some tell me the commands to install kwin21:48
q3we4tre464tNot one sober-minded Christian will not use Linux with the word daemon21:49
rfleminglots of open minded Christians use Linux all the time because they know the difference between Daemon and Demon21:50
Unit193q3we4tre464t: This isn't the place at all for talk of renaming 'daemon', we didn't name it and if we even wanted to, we couldn't rename it.21:50
rflemingxubuntu70w, Google returns a lot of results when you search for 'How to install kwin on xfce'21:50
rflemingThis one looks alright... http://www.thelinuxrain.com/articles/tutorial-how-to-use-kwin-window-manager-with-xfce but beats me21:51
rflemingYour mileage may vary with 16.04 though21:51
q3we4tre464tWhat is the problem is not to use the word daemon in linux? Microsoft does without words deamon.21:52
q3we4tre464tapple too21:53
xubuntu70wrfleming, i tried but it gives me errors they are outdated the neew package is kwin-x21:53
rflemingq3we4tre464t, that's because they treat everyone like a 4-year old and doesn't use multi-sylabic words because they may scare them.21:53
rflemingxubuntu70w, Congratulations!  You're a trailblazer.  Figure it out, make a blog post and score sweet internet points!21:54
rflemingxubuntu70w, (or install kubuntu)21:54
rflemingUnit193, is it the Shimmer Project that makes the greybird theme?21:56
Unit193rfleming: Ayeup.21:56
rflemingdo they take feature requests?21:56
rflemingYou see, I'm getting older and my precision isn't as good as it used to be... larger mouse corners on windows would be nice.21:56
rflemingespecially the diagonal one21:57
Unit193You can try, but right now they're just trying to keep up the never ending porting that is GTK3.  3.20 is a huge change for example.21:57
Unit193rfleming: Oh, do you know of alt+rightclick and drag?21:57
* rfleming gasps21:58
rflemingwhat is this wizardry21:58
Unit193Try alt+leftclick too while you're at it. :P21:58
rflemingYou've just handed me the xfce equivalent of the Konami Code21:59
Unit193Hah, well glad I could help.21:59
rflemingI guess perhaps I'll have to browse through the keyboard shortcuts again22:00
rflemingsee if in 4.16 they'll put in the code for up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A for the super secret tweak menu :)22:01
Unit193Hahaha. ;D22:01
rflemingUnit193, Thanks for the info, and for confirming that Gnome Software doesn't install DEBs downloaded from the net (yet).  Time for me to go home.22:01
Unit193rfleming: Have a nice rest of your day.  Note though that I don't use software-center, so won't know it real well.22:02
rflemingI don't typically use it either.  Usually I have gdebi installed, but I just installed xubuntu 16.04 in a new VM and thought to myself, lets see if it works.22:03
rflemingWell, it didn't... I tried a 15.10 install and it did... :)22:03
rflemingLike I said earlier, I wanted to check if it was me before filing a bug22:03
rflemingOh, quicky before I split... has Mozilla found a new home yet for Thunderbird?22:04
Unit193Isn't it still community maintained?22:06
rflemingAnd does ubuntu have plans on replacing Geary with Pantheon Mail, since yorba is dead?22:06
rflemingit may be community maintained, but they don't want to maintain it22:06
rflemingor cluttering up their servers22:06
rfleming(apparently)22:07
Unit193That last one I can't even pretend to answer.22:07
rflemingThey see Thunderbird as a 'problem' and want it to be someone elses22:07
knomeofftopic alert!22:08
rflemingthey tried to give it to GNOME, but they said no... and it may not fit in the Apache Foundation22:08
rflemingoops, sorry for clogging up the support tubes knome  :)22:08
rflemingI'll make a note to use offtopic22:08
knomeappreciated22:08
rflemingany idea if Ubuntu is going to ditch Geary from the repos and replace it with Pantheon Mail?  Looks like the Elementary OS people have picked up development of Geary since Yorba died.22:09
q3we4tre464tApproach Microsoft and Apple, suits me without daemon.  Approach the community Linux does not suit me with daemon. Daemon is a stupid show off.22:12
* rfleming sighs... it takes all kinds to make the world go round22:12
rfleminganyway... ttyal22:12
Unit193q3we4tre464t: You've stated your opinion.  You don't have to anymore.  If you feel that strongly about it then don't use Linux.  Either way, not the problem of this channel so please go elsewhere with it.22:13
q3we4tre464tBecause of such a stupid approach I don't consider Linux as an operating system. Only for VB22:21
