trodemaster_Looking for advice on how to troubleshoot cloud-init failing to retrieve OpenStack metadata with a Ubuntu 16.04 instance. What is a good place to start my investigation?19:44

smosertrodemaster_, config drive ?20:32
smoserhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-init/+bug/157798220:33
trodemaster_I'm using the openstack datasource20:40
trodemaster_will try that workaround to see if it helps tho. thx20:41
trodemaster_Doesn't seem to be my issue...20:47

larskstrodemaster_: a good place to start is to boot an image that has password login enabled so that you can log in and diagnose the metadata access.21:39
larsksAlthough using a config drive ought to work around any issues with access to the network metadata service.21:39
trodemaster_My image allows me to ssh in currently. I have even verified that I can curl down the metadata. http://169.254.169.254/openstack/latest/meta_data.json the odd part is cloud-init still is failing to see it.22:12

harlowjasmoser https://code.launchpad.net/~harlowja/cloud-init/cloud-init-net-refactor/+merge/29395723:36
harlowjathoughts welcome23:37
harlowjathis gets me to a place where now i think i can add a redhat net renderer23:37
harlowjaxand then i'll find people that want to test it :-P23:41
rharperharlowja: I read throw the merge late last week; it looks really good, I'll read again and add any comments.  On the next step, are you looking at a sysconfig renderer or networkd?23:42
harlowjarharper the above cuts off more of the debian specific stuff into its own files23:42
rharperok, even more churn, cool23:43
harlowja:)23:43
harlowjarharper ummmm, not sure, rhel7 i think supports sysconfig, not sure about networkd23:43
harlowjaperhaps networkd, if its supported (and i learn about it, ha)23:43
rharperok, we're starting to look at networkd output23:43
rharperso didn't want to duplicate it23:43
harlowjai'm not totally sure if rhel7 has networkd stuffs23:43
rharperhehe, it's likely there (you just need systemd-networkd binary)23:43
rharperbut wonder if it's tested23:44
harlowjaunsure23:44
harlowjahttps://www.reddit.com/r/CentOS/comments/3a8rp8/not_in_centos7_systemdnetworkd/ lol23:44
rharperok, well, no cross over then; but with systemd convergence, I wonder how we'll handle that in net inside cloud-init ?23:44
rharperdo we have a distro common area?23:44
rharperit's suddenly not so per-distro23:45
harlowjafor net stuff?23:45
rharperyeah23:45
rharpernetwork_state -> networkd conf is likely non-distro specific23:45
harlowjahttps://code.launchpad.net/~harlowja/cloud-init/cloud-init-net-refactor/+merge/293957 has cloudinit/net/__init__.py for that23:45
rharperok23:45
harlowjaand just cloudinit/net/23:45
harlowjadistro stuff ---> cloudinit/net/distros23:45
harlowjaat least thats what that proposal did23:45
rharpery23:45
harlowjamirrors closer to the cloudinit/distros23:46
harlowjathat change makes the net dir more like https://gist.github.com/harlowja/4824483bd5066899f429d0de9c6a143723:48
harlowjawith common stuff in cloudinit/net/ or cloudinit/net/__init__.py23:49
rharperlooks nice23:49
harlowjaya, mainly shuffle shuffle, lol23:54
