glitchdhello all12:49
glitchdanyone have a clue on how to change the background color of the notification area without changing the theme?12:50
glitchdmy notification icons are white and the background of the notification area is white, so i cant see anything..lol12:50
Yanniitry other themes.  u can have diff theme for notifications, and for the regular windows12:52
Yanniiglitchd, Settings > Notifications12:52
glitchdYannii, thank you, but thats not what im talking about. you gave me info on changing the way popup notification look12:53
glitchdYannii, im talking about the notification area on the top panel on the far right12:54
Yanniiglitchd, ohhhh, sorry12:54
glitchdYannii, it holds the wifi icon, power, volume, etc.12:54
glitchdYannii, no worries, thank you for the intended help12:54
Yanniiglitchd, yeh, i get it now.  yeh i have the same problem.  i think it is a gtk3 vs the old gtk2 problem (my panel is black, but the volume/wifi backround is white)12:55
Yanniifor themes, there are both gtk2 and gtk312:55
glitchdYannii, this is what im talking about http://postimg.org/image/xon9l1tdd/12:57
glitchdyea you are correct12:57
glitchdi replied before i read your reply12:58
Yanniiif u figure it out, LMK  haha. i have the same problem.  (cuz my GTK3 theme has a white panel/tASKBAR, but m GTK2 theme has a black panel13:00
glitchdYannii, well, i didnt find an exact fix for it, but i did find a work around for it13:06
Yanniihey glitchd , do u know how to copy some icons from one theme to another, e.g. the new wifi icons suck.  the old school Gnome Wifi icons are super easy to read (to see signal strength and if it is locked or open wifi)13:07
Yanniithat would also help ur white-backgound situation too13:07
glitchdYannii, i know there is a way to do i, ive done that exact thing before13:08
glitchdYannii, i found a work around for the white background of the notification area, let me upload this picture nd ill show u what i mean13:08
Yanniiglitchd, cool13:09
glitchdYannii, http://postimg.org/image/iu2wcbh81/13:09
Yanniiglitchd, how did u do that?13:09
glitchdYannii, all i did was make the panel transparent then made a backup of the background picture i use, then put a black block in the upper right corner of the picture, then set the copied picture as the background13:10
glitchdYannii, i also have another panel on the bottom of my screen that holds the window buttons, so theyre not up there with everything else to clutter the panel13:11
Yanniiyeh, tranparency would work, but i turn off all those effects  , to make my computer more snappp13:12
glitchdwhat are you system specs?13:13
glitchdill show u what the desktop looks like with the panel fixed now13:13
glitchdhttp://postimg.org/image/g1uv71gj5/13:14
Yanniiglitchd, my computer is fast enough, i just like everything streamlined,  lol, it why i choose Xfce, instead of all the others with the silly eyecandy for babies  :)13:14
glitchdi chopped off a piece of the picture because thats where all my icons nd such are on the desktop13:14
Yanniiyes, that looks good13:14
Yanniihey, do u of a theme that is like clearlooks, but squared off like Numix13:15
glitchdhonestly, not off the top of my head13:15
Yanniii like the square themes, but they all have grey on grey text  , lol13:16
glitchdim not even sure what those look like without seeing a picture or example of them13:16
Yanniii'm old fashioned i just want black text, but the GTK3 themes are much harder to modify :(13:16
glitchdwhat do u mean grey or grey text?13:16
Yanniione sec, there is a funny website about this13:16
glitchdmmk13:16
Yanniifound it!  http://unreadable.website/13:17
YanniiLOL13:17
Yanniiall the new themes, and websites, have grey text on grey background, like it is the new style  :P13:17
YanniiClearlooks theme, is super old school, but has black text.  which is Unheard of in 2016   :P13:18

glitchdright on13:20
Yanniiwhat theme do u use?13:20
glitchdi use a theme called drakefire13:20
glitchdlemme see if i can find a link to share to you13:20

Yanniiglitchd, oh, that's cool, thanks for the link13:32
glitchdYannii, not sure if u can still get free accounts or not, but i made the account probably like close to 10 years ago13:33
Yanniiyeh, i'm old-fashioned, i just listen to mp3's LOL13:33
glitchdYannii, thats not so old fashioned, i listen to a crap ton of mp3s in my car because the music radio stations play is crap13:34
Yanniiglitchd, u can search torrent sites for "billboard" to discover new music ,(or old music) too13:34
glitchdand more often than not music is just filler noise for me, i dont really pay attention to it. its just there to eliminate the silence13:34
glitchdYannii, rightright13:35
Yanniiglitchd, there are tons of audiobooks and podcasts too13:35
Yanniibut that is more dangerous when driving, i think , cuz sometimes u get too distracted13:35
glitchdYannii, to be perfectly honest, a few years ago i got into dubstep music and it really ruined my musical taste and now that pretty much all i listen to13:35
Yanniiesp. if u listen to audio book on 2X speed!  lol13:36

bob123456Hi, i recently installed Xubuntu 16.04 to replace the last running windows on my old gaming machine and i encountered two problems regarding package installation19:26
bob123456Problem 1: i did not activate the xenial-proposed updates but they still appear in the software-center (and synaptic). Is there a way to completely ignore ignore/get rid of them?19:28
knomebob123456, settings manager -> software & updates -> tab "updates" -> make sure proposed is unchecked, then close the dialog and refresh your repositories19:30
bob123456Problem 2:  i cant install manage to install steam, i already switched to main repos and reloaded, unchecked/checked multiverse and reloaded, i just wont show up in synaptic/software-center19:31
xubuntu94wHi all. I change from xubuntu to ubuntu and i forgot the image viewer name... some remember?19:31
knomexubuntu94w, maybe you are looking for ristretto19:31
xubuntu94wmaybe... i will research. thanks a lot!19:32
knomebob123456, are you sure you have the multiverse repositories enabled? also, have you updated your repository information?19:33
squintyfwiw, steam doesn't show up in the Ubuntu-Software (gnome-software) here in Unity either.  there are some problems with that application19:38
squintyit does however show up when using apt apt-get etc.19:39
knomeright, maybe it's missing appdata, which is required for it to show up19:39

bob123456re, sorry, i had to get my cat down the neighbours garage20:24
bob123456knome: yes, they are enabled and i have reloaded the repository information several times20:24
bob123456knome: i also have checked the proposed updates, reloaded the sources, unchecked them again and reloaded the sources again and i still get these updates in synaptic/software-center20:26
bob123456knome: these updates are not shown in the software updater20:27
bob123456using sudo add-apt-repository multiverse i get the output "'multiverse' distribution component is already enabled for all sources"20:28

mrkrampsbut only for i386 architecture23:25
bob123456mh23:27
squintybob123456,  http://paste.ubuntu.com/16422724/   for 16.04 that is what your sources.list should be like23:27
mrkrampsbob123456, wether try installing deb package from steam website23:28
mrkrampsor try installing package 'steam:i386'23:28
Artemis3the sources.list looks good to me23:28
mrkrampsthe sources.list is fine23:29
squintybob123456,  sudo apt install steam   in a terminal.  it will barf if the correct rep's aren't found....if it does then sources.list needs to be fixed23:29
mrkrampssquinty, steam ist only available for 32-bit systems in the official repository23:29
bob123456i cant find any package called steam by using the search in synaptic and typing in steam (same for software-center)23:29
Artemis3but the culprit could be in sources.list.d/23:30
bob123456was that changed since 15.10? it worked fine on 15.1023:30
mrkrampsbob123456, steam was not in the repository of 15.10 afaik23:30

Artemis3looks good23:32
Artemis3i see no issues23:32
Artemis3that should install it23:33
mrkrampspretty strange, synaptic should have shown this package23:34
bob123456thats rather strange since i always download 64bit images and im rather sure that i installed everything via synaptic the last time23:34
Artemis3i wonder if there wasn't a 64bit version23:34
Artemis3what do i even have lol23:34
bob123456uhm also, i dont see a package called steam beneath all those packages23:34
bob123456oh wiat23:35
bob123456there it is at the end xD23:35
mrkrampsbob123456, ubuntu uses multiarch (multiple architecture) which allows for 32bit sofware on 64bit system23:35
bob123456yea i thought so23:35
bob123456it would be mandatory since a lot of games are still 32bit afaik23:35
mrkrampsjust irritating when you told us the package does not appear in synaptic23:36
bob123456jea thats what creeps me out23:36
mrkrampsi first thought it was because of architecture but23:36
bob123456it still doesnt show up in the softwarecenter or synaptic23:36
squintyjust installed synaptic here and search didn't turn up any hits for steam23:36
bob123456also it shows some strange dos style popup window to accept their eula23:37
mrkrampspackage 'multiarch-support' installed?23:37
bob123456urgh23:37
bob123456gotta look it up, i just reinstalled, brb23:37
bob123456yea its preinstalled23:38
bob123456now steam is visible in synaptic23:39
Artemis3no steam can be 32 and still launch 64 bit23:39
Artemis3in fact i think i have 32 bit as well23:39
Artemis3steam is nothing more than a launcher, and parts of the chromium browser23:39
bob123456i also had a bug using the install cd23:39
Artemis3if apt works there is no need to bother with synaptic23:40
Artemis3in fact synaptic is a bit less reliable23:40
bob123456synaptic is a bit more intuitive23:40
Artemis3you may think, but quite the opposite when trouble happens23:41
mrkrampssynaptic is a solid frontend and works great for searching the repositories23:41
bob123456yet slightly advantageous for browsing packages :D23:41
mrkrampsyapp23:42
Artemis3it rather go to https://packages.ubuntu.com/23:42
Artemis3faster and easier23:42
bob123456the thing that creeped me out was the absence in both the software-center and synaptic23:42
mrkrampsbob123456, just forget the software-center23:42
Artemis3synaptic stopped being bundled in ubuntu some versions ago, and i think xubuntu uses a lightweight alternative23:42
Artemis3but apt-get is always there23:43
mrkrampsArtemis3, USC was now replaced by Gnome Software23:43
Artemis3thanks i guess thats it23:44
Artemis3im still on 12.04 :323:44
Artemis3also saw the one bundled in ubuntu mate, quite nice for newcomers23:44
mrkrampsArtemis3, Xubuntu 12.04 went EOS a year ago23:44
Artemis3it works, i play games on steam will hold until next year23:45
Artemis3when they kill ubuntu updates23:45
bob123456^^23:45
bob123456my workflow usually is: install offline, enable ufw, get security updates, install synaptic, install whats left, win23:46
Artemis3and then i hope situacion improves enough here so i can buy an SSD etc23:46
Artemis3lol i don't even bother with ufw23:46
mrkrampskk, just wanted to mention it … there are still people who think xubuntu lts is 5 years23:47
Artemis3yes i know it was 3 yrs23:47
Artemis3the reason i haven't upgraded is, the economy here got pretty dire and i was holding to purchase an SSD, but now its out of the question, even lost a HD the other day and can't replace it23:48
bob123456i thought about a ssd/gpu too, my gaming rig got a 260gtx and 4gb ram but im not sure whether this is a good idea23:48
Artemis3could use more ram but seems fine to me23:49
Artemis3nvidia is best for games23:49
bob123456well "gaming"-rig, its my old tower pc, thats still more powerfull than my "mobile"-pc23:50
Artemis3i have a 460 here23:50
Artemis3pretty old now23:50
bob123456yea the problem is, that a 750Ti would be better while having a tdp of 60W vs the 180W of my 260GTX23:50
mrkrampsbob123456, you should update ram23:50
Artemis3but i have to survive with it probably another year -_- hope it doesnt fail23:51
Artemis3oh if you can buy go ahead23:51
bob123456jea i thought about it, but getting the right ddr2 ram will be a pain in the ass23:51
