isseHi guys11:20
isseAre you aware of any issue with skype on ubuntu ?11:20
AkuliNo, works just fine for me11:20
Akulihttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype11:21
isseon my side, every message i send, has a triangle in front of it saying "Not delivered yet."11:21
isseI think it might be a setting or something...11:21
isseIs there any GPL alternative to skype?11:22
AkuliSure there is, IRC if all you want is chatting and jitsi if you want (video) calls too11:22
issedoes it support skype protocols ?11:24
SuperEngineerisse: thought of trying Telegram?11:25
issenever heard of it, but i'll give it a try for sure11:26
SuperEngineerwell done ;-)11:26
Akuliisse, no but i supports google talk, or whatever that is.11:26
AkuliThere's a bunch of other things it supports too.11:26
issefor now i just need to have something to talk to with my buddies on skype using linux11:27
SuperEngineer[if you use Telegram they will say, but I don't use Telegram"] - tell them to use it - smallest memory footprint on both desktop & mobile, easy efficient messenger service [encrypted if wanted]11:29
Akuliisse, and how is skype not working?11:29
isseit runs fine just as in windows11:29
issebut when i send messages, it puts a triangle in front of the message and when i hover the mouse over the triangle, it says Not delivered yet.11:30
isseand the messages never reach destination11:30
Akuliisse, are you connected to the internet?11:30
Akulihow did you install skype?11:30
isseif i'm talking right now, i think i do11:30
isse:)11:30
SuperEngineer;)11:30
issedpkg -i ...package11:30
issethe weird part is, it tell me when people sign in and out11:31
issebut that's it11:31
Akuliumm11:31
isselooks like the messages don't leave my computer11:31
Akulidpkg -r skype, then install it like the link i posted suggests11:31
SuperEngineerisse I also had the same problem when installed on Ubuntu - my resolution... I removed it & went elsewhere11:32
dsantosdoes someone here can help me? I just installed ubuntu mate and I am having problems with root and bluetooth11:33
SuperEngineerhave you tried it in Ubuntu-MATE? [as in download an ISO & try it via live CD/USB]11:33
SuperEngineerabove msg for isse11:34
isseNo, i haven't11:34
SuperEngineermay be worth a try - U-MATE does many thingsd that fail on vanilla Ubuntu11:35
Akuliisse, install the skype like the link suggests, its a newer version of skype11:35
Akulilet me post it again https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype11:35
issei'm trying this right now11:35
Akuliremove the old package first11:35
Akuli"sudo apt-get remove skype" or "sudo dpkg -r skype"11:36
issesudo dpkg -r skype11:36
isse(Reading database ... 260823 files and directories currently installed.)11:36
isseRemoving skype (4.3.0.37-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) ...11:36
isseit's installed now11:37
Akuliok, now try it.11:37
issei write the msg, i press enter. Three dots appear in fron of the msg and after a few seconds, the same triangle apperars11:38
issewith an exclamation mark11:39
AkuliThen i don't know what to do. it has always worked for me.11:39
AkuliIn ubuntu 14.04 based distros, that is :D11:39
isseNo worries, thanks for trying to help me :)11:39
isseit worked for me also in debian11:40
AkuliAlright, so we'll blame 16.04 for this.11:40
dsantosdoes someone here can help me? I just installed ubuntu mate and I am having problems with root and bluetooth11:40
issebut now i moved to another country and i don't have my desktop with me11:40
Akulidsantos, root and bluetooth? doesn't sound like a good idea...11:40
isseonly the laptop on which i have ubuntu11:40
dsantosboth, separate problems11:40
AkuliOk :)11:40
Akulidsantos, for bluetooth use trial and error with blueman, if you get actual error messages i can help11:41
Akulibut what's the problem with root?11:41
dsantosroot: my username (dsantos) is the administrator of my ubuntu mate. So I am supposed to have the same password for root11:41
Akulisudo -i will give you a root terminal11:42
dsantosbut when I try to use sudo, for example, I receive the following error: "dsantos@dsantos-Inspiron-7520:~$ sudo -i [sudo] password for dsantos: dsantos is not in the sudoers file.  This incident will be reported."11:42
Akulidsantos, what's the output of groups?11:43
Akulitype groups11:43
dsantosI searched the internet, no success11:43
dsantosdsantos@dsantos-Inspiron-7520:~$ groups11:43
dsantosdsantos bluetooth11:43
dsantosI tried only su as well: "dsantos@dsantos-Inspiron-7520:~$ su Password: su: Authentication failure"11:44
Akulidsantos, you're not in the sudo group, is there other user accounts on the computer?11:46
Akuliif not, we'll need to fix this by booting directly to bash11:46
Akulifrom grub11:46
Akulior alternatively, chroot from live cd11:46
dsantosnope, just dsantos as user11:48
AkuliDo you have the installation dvd?11:49
dsantosI have the usb that I created11:50
Akulidsantos, boot from it and come here from there.11:50
dsantosOK, I will come back, thanks Akuli11:51
ubuntu-mateHello Akuli. It is me, dsantos.12:02
AkuliOk :)12:03
AkuliOpen a terminal, run this: lsblk | nc termbin.com 999912:03
Akuliyou can copy-paste that12:03
ubuntu-mateI will paste here the result:12:04
ubuntu-mateubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ lsblk | nc termbin.com 999912:04
ubuntu-matehttp://termbin.com/3l3612:04
AkuliYes, the termbin.com link is all i needed12:05
ubuntu-mateok thanks12:09
Akuliubuntu-mate, you have about 10000 partitions, any idea which one ubuntu is installed on?12:10
AkuliI'm assuming it's either the 412GB one or the 500GB one12:10
ubuntu-mateWell Akuli, there is a little history here. I partitioned my 1 TB HD in order to have Ubuntu in the 500 GB partition and the Windows 10 in the 412 GB.12:12
AkuliOk, in that case: sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt12:13
ubuntu-mateBut when I installed ubuntu yesterday, looks like it was not installed in the 500 GB partition12:13
ubuntu-mateThe installer created another partitions with something like 8,2 GB I dont know how12:13
AkuliMight that be the 9.6GB one you have there?12:14
AkuliOr the 7.9GB one on another hard drive, which is only 30GB in size?12:15
ubuntu-mateI really dont know. The installer created these partitions12:16
AkuliIn that case let's try it12:16
ubuntu-matemy linux home folder is about 8,2 gb space. so maybe it is the 9.6Gb partition you told me12:17
AkuliRun this: sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt12:17
ubuntu-matewith space between sda9 and /mnt?12:19
ubuntu-mate__Hi Folx, I am just trying ubuntu MATE. I knew it just one day ago. I like this work and I am waiting for this for years! I don't like gnome 3.x or unity. I liked the gnome 2.x desktop and it12:22
ubuntu-mate__...'s theme.12:22
Akuliyes ubuntu-mate12:22
ubuntu-mateI did once, nothing happened12:22
Akuliubuntu-mate, good, then it worked12:23
Akuliubuntu-mate, how about this? sudo chroot /mnt12:23
ubuntu-matesudo chroot /mnt12:23
ubuntu-mateops12:23
Akuliyes12:23
ubuntu-mateubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ sudo chroot /mnt12:23
ubuntu-matechroot: failed to run command ‘/bin/bash’: No such file or directory12:23
Akuliubuntu-mate, then that's not where your ubuntu is12:23
Akuliubuntu-mate: umount /mnt12:23
Akulioops12:23
Akulisudo umount /mnt12:23
ubuntu-mate__Now I will change my xubuntu desktop to ubuntu MATE. Many thanks for this guys! :-)12:24
ubuntu-mateOK, nothing happened in the terminal12:25
Akuliubuntu-mate, that means it worked :)12:27
ubuntu-mate__Oops, sorry if I interrupted something. What are you trying whith "chroot /mnt"?12:27
Akuliubuntu-mate__, add ubuntu-mate's user to the sudo group so he can sudo things12:28
Akulifrom the live cd12:28
Akuliubuntu-mate, lets try sda10 next12:28
Akuliubuntu-mate__, sudo mount /dev/sda10 /mnt12:29
Akulioops12:29
Akuliubuntu-mate, sudo mount /dev/sda10 /mnt12:29
ubuntu-mate__@Akuli: Ah, o.k. but isn't the live cd user in the sudo group by default?12:30
Akuliubuntu-mate__, the live cd user is but for some reason his user on the installed system is not12:30
ubuntu-matehow can I change my name here? I dont want confusion here12:31
ubuntu-mateAkula, there is the answer of the terminal:12:33
ubuntu-mateubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda10 /mnt12:33
ubuntu-mateNTFS signature is missing.12:33
ubuntu-mateFailed to mount '/dev/sda10': Invalid argument12:33
ubuntu-mateThe device '/dev/sda10' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.12:33
ubuntu-mateMaybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a12:33
ubuntu-matepartition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?12:33
ubuntu-mate__Akuli, so why the chroot thing? Is this not only a textfile editing thing?12:33
Akuliubuntu-mate__, he's not in the sudo group12:33
Akuliubuntu-mate, the command was correct but we still didn't find the correct drive12:34
Akuliyou could go back to http://termbin.com/3l36 and try the other drives too, and see if you can chroot into them12:34
Akuliyou can try everything under /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, nothing else12:34
ubuntu-matewhat will happen in the terminal when I find the correct partition?12:35
ubuntu-mate__ubuntu mate, try "sudo mount -t <type> /dev/sda10 /mnt". <type> describes the data file system like NTFS, ext2, ext4 a.s.o.12:37
ubuntu-mate__try "fdisk -l" for partition listing.12:37
ubuntu-mate__Akuli, if you mount the system partition of the installed system with the live CD, the live CD user can edit the group list file...12:38
Akuliubuntu-mate, after mounting "chroot /mnt" will work12:39
Akuliubuntu-mate__, why to do it that hard? chroot is much easier, no need to go hacky and edit groups files :)12:39
ubuntu-mateOk, I will try. Give me some minutes12:39
ubuntu-matehey Akuli, take a look12:41
ubuntu-mateubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb4 /mnt12:41
ubuntu-mateubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ sudo chroot /mnt12:41
ubuntu-materoot@ubuntu-mate:/#12:41
ubuntu-mateis it worked?12:41
ubuntu-mate__I think, editing an text file is easier than manipulate the running system with mechanisms like chroot. But everybody have his own favorits... :-)12:41
Akuliubuntu-mate, it worked.12:41
ubuntu-mateGreat! What now?12:41
Akuliubuntu-mate__, do you remember how to add existing user to group?12:41
AkuliI could google it, but if you're such a pro you might as well take it from here :)12:42
Akuliin the end, just exit out of chroot and umount /mnt, and he's done :)12:42
ubuntu-mate__actually no, but google is very helpful... :-)12:42
Akuliok, in that case i'll google.12:42
ubuntu-matethanks guys. When I google it, it is not useful. Such a beginner here12:43
Akuliubuntu-mate, usermod -a -G sudo yourusernamehere12:43
ubuntu-mate__Hm, google is for beginners...like me.12:43
Akuliman pages are for the real nerds :)12:44
AkuliThere's actually a getting started manpage, but i forgot which one it is12:44
ubuntu-mate__Akuli, you got it!12:44
ubuntu-mate__O.k., I came here, just to thank you for the greate work on ubuntu MATE. So: THANK YOU ALL! :-)) Nice work and keep going on! I have to go now. Maybe we meet another day. Bye & thanks!12:48
ubuntu-mateBye ubuntu-mate__12:49

AkuliI think so13:02
ubuntu-mateok, see you in a minute13:03
dsantosYeah Akuli, it worked!! Thanks a lot!!!13:05
AkuliNice :)13:05
dsantosnow, bluetooth? =)13:05
AkuliLike i said, install blueman if it's not already installed and try to get it to work.13:05
dsantosOK I will reboot now I take a look13:07
dsantos*and13:07
dsantosI cant believe how this can reboot so fast! Windows is really shit13:09
dsantoswell Akuli, the software is working. It detects my smartphone HTC, but not my headset =(13:11
Akulidsantos, ubuntu mate is not fast, my old 2x23GHz processor laptop reboots in about 60 seconds with devuan :)13:12
Akuli2GB of RAM13:12
dsantosI reboot mine in like 20 seconds. Unbelievable. The windows 10 takes about 3-5 minutes now. I guess it is full of viruses and malware13:13
AkuliNo, it's not13:16
AkuliIt's windows, it's supposed to be slow :)13:17
ouroumovOne might argue Windows itself is malware.13:17
AkuliThat simple. Your antivirus is probably slowing it down a lot.13:17
dsantosLol, but unfortunately their office it is better than LibreOffice in my opinion. Otherwise my laptop would be 100% linux13:20
dsantosbut my bluetooth headset doesn't detect here =(13:20
AkuliIn fact, distros like ubuntu are never 100% linux13:21
Akulilinux is just the kernel, people should give more credit to the GNU project because it existed before the linux kernel and is the whole reason why the kernel is free nowadays13:21
ouroumovYes13:22
ouroumovAlso the sole reason the Kernel is used nowadays13:22
dsantosOh I see. I saw on video about that. Sorry, it is just I am used to say Linux instead of the name of the distro13:23
AkuliGNU/Linux would be more fair :)13:24
dsantos=)13:26
dsantosHey Akuli, would you help me with my bluetooth headset please? I tried to solve it by myself using google and I ended up lose my root privileges... =(13:27
Akulidsantos, is it powered on and still not appearing in blueman?13:27
Akulimore about gnu and linux, in case someone wants something to read :) http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html13:27
dsantosYes, it is powered on and nothing13:28
dsantosmy HTC smartphone appears and I already paired it with ubuntu13:29
Akuliblueman doesn't find anything?13:29
AkuliIf not, try your luck on #ubuntu13:29
dsantosOk Akuli, thank you very much for your help. Otherwise I would probably give up Ubuntu Mate13:31

zoroah, ok15:43
zoroso, I have a fresh installation of 16.04 updated with "dist-upgrade" and then I installed nvidia-361 on my optimus lenovo g580. Now I have a problem connecting my external monitor and making it the primary monitor15:44
zorowhen I'm using the nvidia prime profile15:44
zorowhenever I set the external display as primary, both displays blackout15:45
zoroexternal display get disconnected and I'm logged out of the system15:45
zoroon the laptop screen15:45
zoroI can't use nvidia-settings to configure the monitors because all I see is one large "scanout" screen15:47
zorois there a way I can use the external monitor as the primary monitor on the nvidia driver?15:50

ouroumovzoro, does it persists across a reboot?15:51

zoroouroumov, yes, this is after rebooting15:53
zoroshould I try using older nvidia driver?15:53

ouroumovzoro, I have very little knowledge about that class of issue. I know there has been quite a few users posting on the community forum about optimus & stuff15:54

Akulilauncher?16:08
ouroumovCaptain_Wozzeck, you're not satisfied with synapse either?16:10
Captain_WozzeckSomething to launch apps and find files with the keyboard16:10
ouroumovAkuli, benjamin_goldsto has weird Welcome behavior: he installed to disk yet welcome says "install now"16:11
Captain_WozzeckHaven't tried synapse. Thanks for the suggestion! I see it it in repos16:12
ouroumovno Captain_Wozzeck16:12
ouroumovIt's part of the standard Ubuntu MATE install16:12
Captain_WozzeckWow, so I have a launcher installed already and I didn't know about it! (facepalm)16:13
ouroumovGo to MATE Tweak16:13
ouroumovUnder "Interface", check "enable launcher"16:13
Captain_Wozzeck@ouroumov thanks so much! That looks perfect16:14
ouroumovCaptain_Wozzeck, you can tweak the activation shortcut and some other things in synapse preferences16:14

AkuliNice!18:08
dsantosI have another issue now. Do you remember what I told about the partitions? I made one 500 GB partition for the Ubuntu but the installer created others18:09
Akulidsantos, run lsblk | nc termbin.com 999 again18:09
Akulioops18:09
Akulilsblk | nc termbin.com 999918:09
Akulithats better18:09
dsantosI would like to merge this 500 GB partition with the 13,2 Gb system18:09
Gallomimiayou have to be pretty specific about what you tell it to do18:09
dsantosI downloaded softwares and it is already full18:09
Akulidsantos, Also, explain briefly what you did to make the headphones work18:09
Gallomimiaif you say just install, it makes a swap partition18:09
dsantoshttp://termbin.com/kpxv18:10
dsantosthe ubuntu is in sdb4. It has only 13,4 GB. I'd like to merge it with the 500 GB one18:11
dsantosI read some forums but I am afraid to try something alone and screw everything18:11
Akulidsantos, you sure 500GB is not windows?18:14
Akuliok, you are :)18:14
dsantosyeah, I am sure. I created this on Windows18:14
AkuliYour problem is that it's on another disk18:14
Akuliwe could set up your /home there, but if it's getting full of installing programs it won't help any...18:15
AkuliI don't have time now, let's come back to this in 21 hours or so :)18:15
dsantosok, at least I need to know how to install the ubuntu softwares there18:16
dsantosif it is possible18:16
Gallomimia13GB is pretty much fine for a ubuntu install if /home is on another partition18:54
Gallomimiahm. you have crypt swap but the rest of your drive is not encyrpted?18:54
jckohHi, I've got a quick newbie question. If I'm trying to run ubuntu mate on a asus eee 901 with a 4gb and a 16gb partition, what should my partition table look like?19:49
ouroumovhi jckoh19:50
ouroumovjckoh, you mean 4GB ram and 16GB usable storage?19:50
jckohNah, for some reason the 901 has two ssd harddrives, one 4gb and one 16gb19:51
jckohI'm not sure if I should just put everything on the 16gb drive or not.19:52
ouroumovHow much RAM does it have?19:53
jckoh2gb19:54
ouroumovSo I'd say, use the 4GB partition as SWAP19:54
ouroumovThen, just use the whole 16GB partition as ext4 filesystem, with mount point: "/"19:55
jckohOkie dokie. Thank you!19:55

fifty-sevenCIt looks like they don't actually do anything. Will doing this break anything?20:04

travisyardHey guys, I'd appreciate some help with a problem I am having on 16.04. Telegram massager does not update when I click on the update button. Expected behavior is that it would close and reopen after performing an update, but it stays closed and does not update. Is this because I installed it from the Boutique software manager? And how could I upgrade it without erasing the data that is on it? Thanks!22:50
fifty-sevenCI don't see telegram in the repo22:58
travisyardI got it from Software Boutique.23:00
travisyardIt says that it is from ppa:flexiondotorg/telegram23:00

fifty-sevenCThe software updater will ussually ask you if you want to update, but you can always make it run yourself with that23:06
travisyardYeah, it just said it was unpacking Telegram, that's a good sign ^^23:06
travisyardThanks man.23:06
