streetwitchI can't get the internal mic on my HP stream 11 to work.  I have a realtech sound card.16:58
OvenWerksstreetwitch: need more info... in pulse (desktop)? Jack?17:05
streetwitchJust tell me what I should do to get the info17:06
OvenWerksWhat are you trying to do? Which application are you using?17:06
streetwitchAfaik all of them.  Is there a good one we can test now?17:07
OvenWerksStart by naming one application you are unable to find the mic with.17:08
streetwitchAudacity17:08
OvenWerksOk I have started audacity... with the edit menu and preferences you shouold get a dialog17:09
OvenWerksThe top of the left side shows "devices"17:09
OvenWerkson the right there is "host" and a drop down beside that.17:10
streetwitchYes17:10
OvenWerksit has the choice of alsa oss and jack, which is it set to.17:10
streetwitchALSA17:10
OvenWerksgood.17:10
OvenWerksso you are using Pulseaudio then.17:11
OvenWerksyou can cacel that, and pause audacity (||) and hit record so you have the input meter working.17:11
streetwitchK17:12
OvenWerksThen (assuming you are running ubuntustudio or xubuntu) on the top bar there is a little speaker and clicking on that has  settings.17:12
OvenWerks(well Sound settings actually)17:13
streetwitchWhere is it exactly?17:13
OvenWerksThat will start an application that says volume control.17:13
OvenWerkson my machine right next to the clock.17:13
OvenWerksyou can run it from a terminal by typing pavucontrol too17:14
streetwitchOh that!17:14
streetwitchSo now what?17:15
OvenWerksselect the recording tab.17:15
OvenWerksyou should see audacity17:15
streetwitchYes17:15
OvenWerksthere should be a drop down on the right side of the screen with the input. click on that. do you see your mic?17:16
streetwitchALSA plug-in [audacity]17:16
OvenWerksRight.17:16
OvenWerkson the same line there is a box with the input device17:17
OvenWerksIf you click on that it should give a list of available inputs17:17
streetwitchJust: Built in audio analog stereo17:17
streetwitchNo mic17:18
OvenWerksclick the configuration tab17:18
OvenWerksWhat do you have?17:18
streetwitchA drop down box17:19
OvenWerksIs there anything in the drop box that looks like it includes the mic?17:19
streetwitchYes, several.17:19
OvenWerksselect one of those that has both input and output (I would choose a stereo one)17:20
OvenWerksThen go back to the recording tab and try again.17:21
streetwitchNo mic17:21
OvenWerksYuck.17:23
streetwitchIt does change what is in the recording drop dowb17:23
streetwitchDown17:23
OvenWerks:)17:23
OvenWerksas you choose each one is there one with audio on it (meter show activity)17:24
streetwitchWhere is the meter?17:24
OvenWerksin audacity17:24
OvenWerkstop right horizontal there will be a L and R with a picture of a mic beside17:25
streetwitchIt isn't moving17:25
OvenWerksI wonder if there is a switch in alsa to turn the mic on or switch between mic and aux in.17:26
OvenWerksDo you happen to have something plugged into the AUX plug?17:28
streetwitchNo17:28
streetwitchThis is a fresh install17:29
streetwitchThe speakers work17:30
streetwitchJust no internal mic17:30
streetwitchHey wait!!17:31
streetwitchThe microphone started working!17:32
streetwitchBut just when I pick the laptop up and move it arounf17:32
streetwitchAround17:32
OvenWerks:(17:33
OvenWerksThat sounds wiring related.17:33
streetwitchNo17:33
streetwitchIt works fine in windowd17:34
OvenWerksThats good then17:34
streetwitchIt seems to go either all the way up17:35
streetwitchOr all the way down17:35
streetwitchIdeas?17:36
OvenWerksMaybe alsamixer can help.17:36
OvenWerksthis is old: https://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/12/05/fixing-the-errant-microphone/17:36
OvenWerksThis is a bit nicer: http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/7134/117:39
OvenWerkspulse maybe only hooked up to mic boost and not level.17:39
OvenWerks(or mute)17:40
OvenWerkswe are getting to where I just don't know what is next.17:45
streetwitchI tried the document17:46
streetwitchNot sure if I did it right17:47
OvenWerksto me it sounds like pulse does not properly set the mic up.17:48
OvenWerksNormally with internal audio pulse is quite good about figuring things out.17:48
streetwitchCan you try something else?17:49
OvenWerks:) in my case none of my devices show in pulse... I have specific needs.17:50
streetwitchHow do I load pulse?17:50
OvenWerksit is already loaded.17:51
streetwitchI have turned everything to the max in alsa17:52
streetwitchBut am not sure about anything else17:52
OvenWerksyou might try asking the guys in #pulseaudio.17:53
streetwitchHow do I know if I have muted something in alsa?17:54
OvenWerksif there is a bug in PA they would like to know or they may be able to help you otherwise as they are more familiar with internal HDA audio than I am17:54
OvenWerksyou would see MM at the bottom17:54
* OvenWerks has to go wife is calling.17:55
anttoguys.. i have a cheap "HP" usb mouse, iirc it actually uses logitech chips inside.. what kind of black magic is needed to make it move linearly (that means disabling acceleration completely) and yet be able to adjust the speed (because it moves too slow then) ?18:31
anttoor is it a problem with the actual mouse, like.. it's a very cheap one, is it maybe not sensitive enough?18:32
anttoi used some hacks to make it move faster (xinput or xset or something similar) but with that i only managed to make it twice faster, but it basically moves by two pixels.. which means that's the smallest amount i can actually move the cursor18:33
anttothere must be a way18:33
anttoam i the only one who wants linear mouse response x_x18:34
sakrecoerantto: not sure i understand what "linear" means in this context...19:03
anttoit means, if i move the mouse two centimeters to the left, it should move the cursor "X" pixels to the left, always, no matter if i moved it uber slow or very fast19:04
sakrecoerwell, that is how it acts on my computer...19:04
anttoi recently installed a bunch of ubuntu variants on a bunch of computers, and a debian.. they all had the mouse acceleration enabled by default19:05
sakrecoeryes, tried with a ruler and then with 2 objects blocking the mouse, and it moves the same distance regardless of the speed19:06
anttocan you post a screenshot of your mouse settings?19:06
sakrecoersure19:06
anttoor just check if the acceleration is set to 2px19:07
sakrecoerhttp://www.pasteall.org/pic/103337 haven't touch it since install tho...19:07
anttoyes, that's the default settings19:08
anttoyou have acceleration, my friend19:08
sakrecoeryes, but... oddly enough, it makes no difference how fast i move it..19:09
sakrecoeri put the mouse between 2 blocking object, and it goes same length fast as slow19:09
sakrecoernah, maybe a slight little difference... hard to tell..19:10
sakrecoerwith acceleration set to 0, there is defenitly no diff19:10
anttoyes, set to 0 it becomes linear19:11
anttobut then you have absolutely no way to change the speed19:11
anttoand, my question is wether that's because my mouse is too cheap and doesn't have fine resolution, or what19:12
anttoon windows XP i can adjust the speed, and acceleration is disabled, but it's not a fair comparison since i'm using a different mouse there (PS/2, and my ubuntu computer doesn't have a PS/2 port at all, so i can't test it)19:13
sakrecoermy mouse is also very cheap, so.. it could be. "sensitivity" doesn't seem to do anything to it... so be... weird non the less19:13
anttoi could plug the USB mouse on the winXP and see how it is tho19:14
sakrecoertry it :)19:14
anttoehm, the "Sensitivity" slider on the mouse settings in ubuntu is related to the acceleration19:14
sakrecoerwould be interesting to see what happens19:14
anttowhen acceleration is fully OFF (to make the mouse linear) then the sensitivity doesn't have any effect19:15
anttoset your mouse acceleration to 2.0 again, but change the sensitivity to 1px19:15
anttothen you will be able to feel the effect easier, and then turn the acceleration even higher for mega pain ;]19:16
sakrecoerhmm... acceleration 2.0 and sensitivty 1.0px seems to be the closest to what i imagine you are looking for...19:17
anttonope19:17
anttoi plugged that mouse into the winXP machine now.. huh, both mice move the cursor19:18
sakrecoeractulay, acc 1.0 and sens 1px must be linear as i percieve it... but i don't think i'm really feeling what you are after...19:19
sakrecoerhaving it like that, it really makes no difference in length if i go slow or fast between the 2 objects blocking my mouse19:19
anttookay.. the USB mouse definately moves slower than my PS/2 mouse19:20
anttoso it's a hardware issue19:20
anttox_x19:20
anttogotta find a more decent mouse then19:20
sakrecoer:) i guess i'm the wrong person to check with, sorry... i tend to get used to any mouse quite quickly. that why i always buy them second hand super cheap19:21
sakrecoerwell.. "always".... last time was several years ago...19:21
sakrecoerfor detailed work, i use pen tablet.19:22
sakrecoeranyways, happy you found what your issue was, sorry i couldn't help you better...19:23
anttoi got two computers, and the mouse difference is severe, it annoys me19:23
anttoand i don't have much desk space to move the mouse 20cm to reach the other end of the screen19:23
anttoblah19:23
