hydrogenbut etc/hosts seems to be completely ignored01:25
pasjrwoctxAnyone here know how to create a separate X session in ubuntu 16.04 so that I can use one monitor to work on, and the other to watch something eles.  Without the second monitor changing virtual desktops while I change them on the first display?  I used to be able to do this in 12.04, but know the nvidia-settings control display is undefined and I have no clue how to us it.01:47

YankDownUnderAnyone having issues with Plasma in conjunction with kscreenlocker - as well as widgets just not loading...? Just wondering...05:40
hateballIf you describe your problems in more detail perhaps05:40
hateball!details05:40
ubottuPlease elaborate; your question or issue may not seem clear or detailed enough for people to help you. Please give more detailed information; for example, we might need errors, steps, relevant configuration files, Ubuntu version, and hardware information. Use a !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel.05:40
YankDownUnderkscreenlocker, when activated via widget or key-combo, does not accept keyboard input. As well, Plasma widgets do not load until "toolbox" is clicked and "Add widgets" is selected; often the default wallpaper does not show until the widgets show on desktop. Ubuntu 16.04. KDE/Plasma is default desktop, SDDM is the DM.05:45
hateballYankDownUnder: That's nicely detailed :) Sadly I don't have any idea, but someone else might if you stick around05:52
hateballYankDownUnder: Do you use multiple monitors? They are the cause of much ill in recent Plasma/Qt05:52
YankDownUnderhateball, I've dug around online for the past week - have found heaps of instances with exactly what I've described - however, the "fix" was to have the monitors setup "adjacent" in the prefs, and to make use of "DRI2" instead of "DRI3" in the X configurations...so, that being said, it doesn't appear as thought that's truly a "fix" - but merely a bandage to something slightly greater...either which, I've got time and06:10
YankDownUnderpatience...ain't like it's vastly critical...doesn't stop me from doing what I need to do...06:10
hateballYankDownUnder: So you do use multiple monitors then?06:11
hateballYankDownUnder: I've seen mention of disabling kscreen and manually using xrandr instead06:11
YankDownUnderhateball, Oh yes...can't live without THAT ability my friend..06:11
hateballYankDownUnder: No I understand, it's just useful to know for anyone diagnosing :)06:11
YankDownUnderhateball, "Been there done that", bro...it's still a "no go" on that.06:11
hateball:|06:11
YankDownUnderHehehe...could be worse...06:12
YankDownUnder...and I've seen HEAPS worse...06:12
hateballFrom what I've heard things are no better in backported plasma 5.6 either06:12
YankDownUnderWith this new LTS release, I'm sure that some of the devs are going to get "kickstarted" into things...either which, again, it could be much worse...and for me, well, it's literally been years since I've even bothered playing with or using KDE...so, this is minor in comparison to what I've seen in the distant past...truly..06:13
hateballYankDownUnder: Well I personally have been running plasma 5 for a good while without any major issues. Until I switched my workmachine (multimonitor) from 14.04 to 16.0406:18
hateballAnd KDE 4.4 and up has served me well06:19
YankDownUnderhateball, That is interesting to know...therefore, it was the "multi-monitor" thingo that caused things to go "south" as it were...funny that...06:19
YankDownUnderCan't remembe which version of KDE I was on the longest...kinda reckon it was like 3.2 or so...been a while...then again, there was a time when both KDE and Gnome were in their early years and not many actually thought they'd survive long...I was on Englightenment DR15 back then...06:20
sverro2hi, is anyone online responsible for packaging?07:15
sverro2or can I contact someone via a different channel?07:16
hateballsverro2: I think perhaps those guys are in #kubuntu-devel07:17

yossarianukk00pa: always happens to me with kubuntu installer also unless its a blank drive.14:55
k00parunning from a USB stick and trying to install to a empty HD14:55
yossarianukdo you have any other usn drives attached ?14:55

k00pawell nooow it opened14:56
k00pacould just be that the stick is slow as hell14:56
yossarianukits odd - happens to me also.14:56
yossarianukyou using UEFI ?14:56
yossarianuk(just out of interest)14:56
k00paI have no idea how I have configured that14:57
k00pabut the motherboard has that14:57
k00paokey looks like I am going forward in this14:57
k00paI am not going to bother with dualbooting, as I have separated disks for windows and linux14:58
yossarianukjust wondering if its a UEFI thing...14:58
k00paI think this is just the system being slow on the USB stick or osmething14:58
yossarianukolder versions (older than 15.04) it didn't happen (i.e the huge wait)14:58
k00pahmmm14:59
k00painteresting, 15.10 installation is going for me14:59
yossarianukin those days I used legacy also.14:59
user|40511Hi14:59
user|40511have install kubuntu 16.04 for the first time14:59
yossarianukk00pa: why 15.10 ? 16.04 is out now, you only have a few months before 15.10 is EOL14:59
k00pawell this seems to work somewhat, all good14:59
k00pawait lol14:59
k00pacan I just upgrade from that?15:00
yossarianukyes you can15:00
k00paI had that iso on the stick and I was too lazy to download a new one15:00
k00panot my primary day to day os anyway so I don't mind minor mess15:00
yossarianukfair enough... I normally have less issues doing a fresh install15:00
k00paye thats true15:00
user|40511am using ubuntu since 2008, i thought let try plasma also15:00
k00pabut this is just for one project to get ported over15:00
yossarianuk16.04 got rid of a few major issues  for me with hybrid graphics...15:01

pepeeuser|34995, well, you could watch some videos, there are many out there on how to install kubuntu17:27
ww1965Well, I'm familar with installing Kubuntu for some years. I do not think that is an issue of wrong installation. On another machine using ATI-card everything went cool...17:30
pepeeww1965, I guess you need some pass some flags to the kernel. also, you could ask in #intel-gfx17:32
ww1965That might be a good idea. Trials to fix the issue using xrandr with --mode option did not take effect. So changing some kernel flags hopefully will help. Thank you!17:34

Guest14409Hey folks, I'm doing a fresh install of 16.04 and the installer has hung at keyboard layout22:18
Guest14409Does anyone have any suggestions22:18
Guest14409?22:18
Guest14409It simply won't move forwards22:18
Guest14409Now it has closed and I can't get it to launch again22:20
bprompt_Guest14409:     what make and model of pc do  you have?22:26
Guest14409bprompt_: custom build, AMD FX 8320, nvidia gtx 760, 24GB RAM22:28
Guest14409bprompt_: and now nothing but konversation seems to be functioning22:32
bprompt_Guest14409:    so, it did install then?22:33
Guest14409Well, it partially installed I think but then the installer failed. Then I ran it again and now I can't get the installer back up22:33
Guest14409Nor can I get firefox up22:33
Guest14409Nor can I get konsole to do anything22:34
Guest14409Kickoff doesn't budge when I click on it22:34
bprompt_Guest14409:    so... how are you running konversation then?   liveusb session?22:34
Guest14409Yeah, everything else in the live session has stopped working22:35
matt1Guest14409: reboot into a new liveusb session.  try picking the keyboard without autodetect22:36
Guest14409Alright, back in a few22:36
kubuntu_this installer just does not want to agree with me22:46
kubuntu_bprompt_: I'm back22:46
kubuntu_The installer now just crashes at the keyboard section22:47
YankDownUnderkubuntu_, Have you tried to just plug in a different keyboard to get through the installation?22:47
kubuntu_Yeah22:48
bprompt_kubuntu_:    did you try choosing the keyboard manually as matt1 suggested?22:48
kubuntu_I did indeed22:48
bprompt_ahemm22:49
kubuntu_And unfortuantely there's nothing that comes up in the crash message that provides any useful data22:49
YankDownUnderSo when the choice comes up, are you just clicking "next" - or doing something else? BTW, what type of keyboard - a USB plugged in type of keyboard...?22:49
kubuntu_YankDownUnder: So I make sure to select english by myself and then it crashes22:50
kubuntu_The keyboard that I was using a minute ago was a USB keyboard but I'm currently using a PS/2 leyboard22:51
kubuntu_*Keyboard22:51
bprompt_kubuntu_:    ok... hmmm what you can try is.... boot again to it, once at the very beginning, when you see the circle icon at the bottom of the screen, at the very beginning of the bootup, press Esc, that should take you to the boot up menu, with several options, if you press F6, it'd have some things you can uncheck, so it doesn't load some drivers22:51
YankDownUnderIn the BIOS of this machine, have you changed/configured any settings for USB/ps2? In most BIOS, you can enable/disable "legacy"...22:51
kubuntu_YankDownUnder: the PS/2 ports are enabled if that's what you're asking22:52
bprompt_kubuntu_:    what I suspect is either videocard driver issue, or some APM driver, some hardware incompatibility with the driver it's trying to load22:52
kubuntu_bprompt_: so what driver should I unload?22:52
bprompt_kubuntu_:    ok... hmmm what you can try is.... boot again to it, once at the very beginning, when you see the circle icon at the bottom of the screen, at the very beginning of the bootup, press Esc, that should take you to the boot up menu, with several options, if you press F6, it'd have some things you can uncheck, so it doesn't load some drivers22:53
kubuntu_This is a liveUSB by the way. I made it with unetbootin22:53
bprompt_kubuntu_:   hmmm you know, you can just get the iso and burn it :)22:53
kubuntu_bprompt_: so untick all of those22:53
kubuntu_bprompt_: true, but I don't have a DVD handy22:53
bprompt_kubuntu_:    untick some, just a few, one I can think of is acpi and apm maybe22:54
YankDownUnderkubuntu_, On a machine I was just working on - there's an option in BIOS to "enable legacy support" for USB and PS/2 => I enabled them and several issues disappeared...however, as bprompt_ mentioned, it could be an IRQ/DMA issue with the graphics card...therefore, disabling some drivers as they load...22:54
bprompt_kubuntu_:   the iso burns to dvd or usb, just the same22:54
kubuntu_Tell you guys what, I'm gonna take a little break from this and come back in a few.22:56
kubuntu_I am going to power this off for the time being22:56
YankDownUnderkubuntu_, Need a hammer? I've got a nice one...22:57
kubuntu_I'll probably be back later22:57
bprompt_kubuntu_:     get a coke, put some mozart on, give it 30mins or so :)22:58
bprompt_I also have mp3s of rainfall, thunderstorms and running creeks, those are great =)22:59
YankDownUnderMozart, yes - Coke? No...(poison)22:59
bprompt_kubuntu_:   or just watch Office Space movie, that'll get you 2hrs =)23:00

hydrogenwell, more importantly how to fix it23:03

hydrogenthen we are in agreement23:04
hydrogenmy nssswitch.conf shows files being first still23:05
hydrogeneverything on google about it didn't help, and seems older23:05
YankDownUnderhydrogen, Hmm...so you've "re-customised" it and then restarted networking and it's just not doing what it's supposed to be doing, right?23:06
YankDownUnderhydrogen, ..or something simiar...23:06
hydrogenyeah23:07
hydrogenI've tried disabling dnsmasq, disabling network manager, reenabling both, enabling some of both23:07
hydrogenpunching my router in the face23:07
hydrogenbut the same hosts works fine on my os x machine so I'm fairly confident it's not an error in there23:07
YankDownUnderhydrogen, Just for giggles and grins - did you "recreate" a new hosts file...? Just asking so I can paint a good picture in my mind, bro...23:10
hydrogenI haven't, because I have no idea what the default would be23:12
YankDownUnderhydrogen, So in going through the KDE control centre and checking/changing network settings, nothing is affecting the /etc/hosts file in the least? And you've edited the same /etc/hosts file to reflect what you're already using on your OSX box...?23:15
