[02:33] depending on how your system works, pulling the boot drive might have no immediate effect... [02:39] JanC: Well .. I did bring it back online after powering down with it disconnected . Connected the drive backup, reset bios , fsck .. restarted apps . I see no harm done . whewhhh . ( log files are huge . I expect log rotate to deal with that in time ) . [02:43] I was rather referring to possible setups where you don't actually use the boot drive after booting :) [02:43] but happy your system is okay anyway [02:45] not sure why you reset the BIOS really? [02:49] JanC: Well .. when I rebooted .. guess what .. bios did not see that hard drive ! .. ouch ! ( initially stick on the bios boot screen, going no further ) . When I got around to verifying the boot drive, that 1st hard drive was not in the boot order ) . Was an adventure ! [02:50] stuck* [02:52] you can't just tell it to boot from whatever is the first bootable drive it can find? [03:01] JanC: Point was .. that upon reboot .. that drive was not known to bios . Complete power down .. and the rediscovery process .. The prefered boot device had to be reset, as bios still reflected a secondary drive as the primary boot device . [03:04] well, some firmwares allow you to not have a preferred boot device, in which case it will figure out one to boot from on its own? [03:28] JanC: One would thunk it , Bios goes looking where to hand off too; In my case there is boot code on that secondary drive. But it did not boot, just hung there seeking I guess . Think'n bout it .. maybe best I re-install the boot code on that 2nd hard drive . [04:34] good morning to all [06:27] morning everyone! [06:30] wb ducasse . Bout time for me to go off . [06:30] go get some sleep :) [06:31] sooooonnn ... zzzzzzzz [06:58] Time! [08:00] So did i find the right room to discuss technical issues regarding ip camera recording using ubuntu? [08:00] or at least a valid room for that discussion? [08:01] right place, but kinda quiet at the moment. [08:49] how are you ducasse [08:50] good, thanks. you? finally good weather here, after five solid days of rain... [08:50] finally a gray day in New Mexico [08:51] we're not too spoiled by sun and warm weather here in norway :) [08:52] true [08:53] so care to geek out for a moment on data xfer and linux server? [08:53] sure :) [08:54] ip cameras require about 10 mbs xfer rate @1080 video [08:54] i need to reinstall my fileserver today, i'm just putting it off because i really don't want to do it. [08:54] maybe this will bore you enough to do it [08:54] how many cameras do you need? [08:54] as many as i can [08:55] they are so cheap now I would love 20 [08:56] my thinking is that because i am not processing the data, just storing it that cpu horsepower while relevant to getting the data from the network [08:56] is not going to be as negatively affecting the function as if I was real time editing [08:57] so a dual core envirnonment with lots of ram would suffice for the data acquisition [08:58] and truth to be told I kind of want to approach it in a see how many before a $200 server drops [08:58] depends on how you receive the data, i guess. [08:58] I trust ubuntu to handle the acquisition and the RAID [08:59] coming in off of 1gb network [08:59] the pipe is bigger than data flow [08:59] RAID is faster than dataflow [09:00] you will be needing a ton of ram, though... [09:00] i just haven't designed a server envirnonment in so long that i want to make sure my current OS and HW assumptions are accurate [09:00] for data buffering? [09:01] yes. [09:02] SATA raid is seeing througputs of 300+mbs with raid 5 [09:03] that's true, but you will still need a bit of memory if you have a lot of streams. [09:03] and just to confirm traditional network management functions have gotten so small that actual load of ubuntu should be insignificant in the operating environment [09:04] 64gb should have a lot of buffer [09:05] there aren't a lot of bits of the os you are actually going to need, you basically need a network stack and a disk subsystem. [09:06] next question is there a way to directly catch the stream, or would I need to have a software layer [09:07] there are video surveilance software systems out there which I think could work, but if I am approaching it as purely data capture, not editing should i look for a direct solution [09:08] depends on the cameras, most can transmit a stream you can just pick up. [09:09] that is my thinking also [09:09] i know the vlc command line client can pick them up, maybe ffmpeg also. you migh use it with something like nc if not. [09:11] and it will operate in command lines side by side for as many streams as memory would allow? [09:11] while maintaining the buffering required [09:12] i assume so, but i've never tried. the docs should tell you. [09:13] check vlc-nox. [09:26] thank you for an intelligent discussion [09:28] np. been lookin at the vlc docs, it seems to be what you are after, videolan.org/doc [09:30] all the time stamps should be based on the server if I am using it as my time server also right? especially since there is no connection between this network and the internet [09:30] if there is only one time server everyone syncs to it [09:31] i would think so, yes. the time stamps would be set to whenever the files are written. [13:46] good afternoon to all [13:49] Hey lotuspsychje [13:49] hey BluesKaj & OerHeks [13:50] hi di hi [13:50] lol [14:02] afternoon, lotuspsychje [14:02] hey ducasse [14:02] ducasse: hows the wiki thing going? [14:03] i'm working on it :) i've got a couple of other projects that need to be prioritized, like swapping the failing root disk in my fileserver... [14:04] :p [14:04] i'll also be doing a fresh install of xenial on my desktop, so i'll write most of it as i do that, then i can just write down the steps. [14:05] hope to start that tomorrow :) [14:05] no rush [14:06] i know, but i'll get it done :) [14:19] http://linux.softpedia.com/blog/you-can-finally-buy-official-ubuntu-stickers-for-your-laptop-and-desktop-pc-504446.shtml [14:19] hurry OerHeks ! [14:19] pretty expensive, no? [14:21] 10$ discount! :p [14:21] i still have a few bubble patches, like this https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6885560/blob.JPG [14:22] yes, i have lamp on my HP-i3 [14:22] :_D [14:22] those are nice [14:22] sure are, white on orange/orange on white [14:23] next time there is a canonical seminar, join! [14:23] (for the seminar, not just the goodies) [14:23] well i had a job test today and im hired :p [14:24] less irc time is comming : ( [14:24] congrats! [14:24] tnx, the good news is i will eb able to start my ubuntu store soon [14:24] do they want 48-y old guys too? [14:25] yes [14:25] its a great company, le pain quotidien [14:25] do they want americans [14:26] Ben64: also [14:26] yeah, let ubuntu take over that business [14:26] Ben64: they are spreaded all over the world [14:26] ooh [14:26] there's one in new york an la [14:26] i'm close to la [14:27] http://www.lepainquotidien.com/landing/international/#.V0W2PJ5b-1M [14:27] check this out [14:27] hmm a few in Amsterdam [14:27] close in california terms at least [14:27] gonna work in the kitchen [14:27] but its not real cooking kitchen [14:28] ah, a softwarekitchen? [14:28] all food comes to the stores pre-made [14:28] lol OerHeks [14:28] you only have to throw in on a plate [14:37] congrats on the job, lotuspsychje! looking forward to starting? [14:38] ducasse: thank you mate, yes 2 weeks they will educate me on other location [14:39] ducasse: and its 10min walk from my house [14:39] brilliant, no commute :) [14:40] ducasse: then i will start my sideby job ubuntu store [14:41] selling support etc? [14:42] ducasse: will be a sort of system76, but much cheaper, and personally tweaked boxes, tablets, phones [14:42] with only the 850 pro ssd series [14:42] ducasse: will do alot of win to ubuntu converting of existing machines also [14:43] i see. there would be almost zero market for something like that here, unfortunately... [14:43] ducasse: its crazy how much ppl dont know about linux still.. [14:43] i wanna change that [14:44] i know. #ubuntu-no has maybe 20 people in it, and nobody has said anything in there in the last week or so. [14:45] ducasse: the hardest part for me is finding the perfect barebone company [14:45] i need no Os, no hd, no ram by default [14:46] and preferable customizable keyboard languages [14:49] hmm. have you found anything that looks good? it's going to be difficult to compete, the big manufacturers can push things pretty cheap... [14:50] i'm not trying to be negative, just curious :) [15:35] ducasse: yes found those clevo machines pretty interesting [15:36] hi pauljw you are the 55th user, you have won todays price! [15:37] pauljw: grab your price here: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mawa57mie61r5wodgo1_1280.jpg [15:38] or, you can exchange it for a lifetime membership of the 55th-user-society [15:38] lol [15:38] but then you are only allowed as 55th user, ofcourse [15:38] awesome lotuspsychje, and thank goodnesss for that option OerHeks [16:07] some users give a dejavu experiences :p [16:10] hi baizon, you are the 54th user today [16:10] you have won the second price: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mawa57mie61r5wodgo1_1280.jpg [16:11] lol [16:12] :p [16:12] its called: dutch warfare fries [16:12] hi lotuspsychje [16:12] it actually looks pretty good [16:13] yeah we belgians eat every kind of fries [16:13] the fatter, the better [16:14] i love fries with brown gravy... [16:14] what gravy mean? [16:15] sauce [16:15] like poutine? [16:15] contributes to the McButt syndrome [16:15] heh [16:15] brown is usually beef based [16:15] :) [16:15] ahhh stoofvleessaus! [16:15] yeah, that... ?? [16:15] lol [16:16] heh [16:16] lol BluesKaj [16:17] odd I've never tried potine and I'm a sucker for fries, cheese and gravy [16:17] hi de-facto [16:17] poutine rather [16:18] BluesKaj: it's really big in the US pacific northwest now, almost every pub here serves a version of it. I think Portland (where I live) even has an annual contest now :) [16:18] well, by "now", i mean a few years ago possibly :) [16:18] hey guys [16:19] nacc: all you can eat contest? [16:20] lotuspsychje: best poutine contest :) [16:20] oh [16:20] lotuspsychje: a couple of our local papers do those just about every week -- best donut in portland, best ramen in portland, etc. And that's turned into 'donut week' [16:20] started in Quebec , but poutine has barely caught on in the rest of Canada [16:20] and 'ramen week' :) [16:20] i love those american burger stores where you have to eat like 5Kg meat in 15min [16:20] lotuspsychje: i love the use of the verb "have to" :) [16:21] as that is totally accurate [16:21] lol [16:21] it becomes involuntary somehow [16:21] youl end on the wall of fame nacc ! [16:21] or shame :p [16:21] nacc, substitute "must" for "have to" [16:22] lotuspsychje: and to be clear, not criticizing your phrasing, just finding it funny how true it is [16:22] lotuspsychje: the only walls i'd want to end up on are for various spicy food contests ... but even though i find less appealing as i get older [16:22] nacc we eventually get old enough to just not get started in any "have to" eating exercise :) [16:23] gotta ask, wth is poutine? [16:23] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgbUqgQL2N4 [16:23] lol no way [16:23] pauljw: ack! [16:23] ducasse: french fries + curds + gravy [16:23] ducasse: usually at a pub or diner, aiui [16:24] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine [16:24] dear $deity, that sounds fatal. [16:24] heh [16:24] ducasse,^ [16:26] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqRrZUhr00g [16:26] jesus... [16:27] o/ [16:27] if you can't bite through it it's a waste ;) [16:28] lol [16:28] daftykins, well, you can bite thru it and it will affect your waist [16:29] :D i was thinking of all the layers at once, since that's where the taste comes from :D [16:29] hi daftykins :p [16:34] daftykins: rams are sent by yesterday [16:37] ooh thank you sir :D [16:37] hey daftykins [16:37] \o [16:39] i'm browsing the Dell Outlet for a new PC for someone [16:39] i5 4590, 8GB RAM and 500GB HDD for £260! [16:39] throw in an SSD and that's £308 [16:40] daftykins: was 1,50 euro to send lol, didnt know it was so cheap to the uk [16:40] :O [16:40] magic :) [16:41] i bet it wouldn't be that cheap to return if it doesn't work XD [16:41] if it doesnt work you can keep it [16:41] use for other machine? [16:42] hmm might be more likely for yourself to run into such age machines, but we'll see how it goes :) [16:42] yeah [16:44] that's not a bad price for that i5, daftykins [16:45] how well do newer dell laptops work with linux? [16:45] i've had good luck with Dell laptops [16:45] dell and hp are good with linux [16:46] dell is probably the best, because they seem to care [16:46] i've got a lenovo yoga 900 working with stock ubuntu 16.04 [16:46] nice [16:55] oh really? do dell and hp care about linux driver support when they choose their hw components they bake in laptops? [16:56] i think it has to do with companys using linux and dell or hp servers/printers [16:57] hp printers are awesome on linux [16:57] yeah [16:57] i wish they added all printers by default in the database [16:58] so one would have to buy the business lines from them to get the best lnx compatibility? [16:58] still a nightmare in 2016 to find some type of printer drivers [16:58] de-facto: no, i think if they made it available for business clients, why not support the average user also [16:59] i dont know, maybe because those are cheaper and they dont want to restrict hw selection hence can use the cheapest avail on market currently? [16:59] not sure [17:00] there's a lot going on lately with linux and oem [17:00] de-facto: i can't speak for componentry, but at least dell ships certified ubuntu laptops now (with some junk i'm sure) [17:00] i think snappy will hit the bomb in the future [17:00] also with those preinstalled w10 boxes: i have seen some lenovo subnotebooks for under 200€ in a store with w10 [17:01] dang [17:01] thats cheap [17:01] i almost was tempted to take my ubuntu stick out and ask if i could try to boot it [17:01] i wish all those brands were barebone [17:02] your chances can vary wildly at the budget level [17:03] lenovo 100S-11IBY 80R2002KGE but i guess those are really slow [17:03] daftykins yeah thats what i meant [17:04] bbl soupertime, have a nice one guys [17:04] the 100S iirc is the cheap atom toy with a 32GB eMMC 'SSD' ? avoid. [17:09] yeah i was just curious seeing that one, i wont buy it [17:14] biab... === tinoco is now known as tinocoff [18:16] lol https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2016/05/20/microsofts-approach-terrorist-content-online/#sm.0001vcdpdxpq2fm210j99wn6863ni [18:17] and a second lol https://i.imgur.com/3aUIbfv.jpg [18:20] auch .. hi hi [18:20] troesty .. === tinocoff is now known as tinoco === sethj_ is now known as sethj
