Guest10103Hello is there anyone on willing to share their wisdom?17:08
Mordoc_MysterySorry, missed you question as I just joined...17:08
Guest10103i havent asked yet. i felt sort of rude starting with it17:09
Guest10103Im new to linux as in ability but several times a year since i was a kid i like to check it out17:09
Guest10103i think it, and i, are in a place to use more permanently. i was just wondering17:09
Guest10103how i could repair my boot loader for when other people want to use windows?17:09
Guest10103when i boot my ssd drive i get the grub rescue prompt17:10
Mordoc_MysteryHmm, this might be a better question for #ubuntu but let me ask a few questions. Do you have both Windows and Ubuntu-Mate installed already?17:11
Guest10103yes. I had windows 10 on my SSD. Installed Ubuntu mate 2 nights ago on a seperate 500G drive.17:11
Mordoc_MysteryOkay, and then during install you put grub on the SSD or the 500 GB drive?17:12
Mordoc_MysteryIt should have asked you that (I think) during the install process.17:13
Guest10103I dont recall ever being asked.17:13
Guest10103I am familiar with the terminal and manually editing grub. I have boot-repair installed so i can move the bootloader aswell17:14
Guest10103When installing, i chose the something else option.17:14
Mordoc_MysteryNo worries. Usually the process that I have had to do is use a Windows disk to repair the Windows bootloader and then boot Ubuntu based USB stick and reinstall grub from there. Hold, I'm looking for the last page I found on this.17:15
Guest10103i wanted to dual boot but i didnt want liux on the SSD WWITH windows. small ssd17:15
Mordoc_MysteryI get that, we work with what we got right?17:17
Guest10103youre a really cool person.17:17
Guest10103i just wanted you to know that17:17
Mordoc_MysteryI can't find the original one that I used but this has the just of it: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/33433/restore-the-windows-boot-loader-after-an-ubuntu-update/17:18
Guest10103thank you. seriously. this is the first time ive ever spoken to a linux user17:19
Mordoc_MysteryBasically, use a Windows disk or USB and fix their stuff so you can get to Windows at least and then at the end they recommend using EasyBCD to go from there.17:19
Guest10103ive heard of easyBCD so i shouldnt have any trouble.17:19
Mordoc_MysteryNo worries! People are great around here...and the MATE community is one of the better ones in my books. Have a great day and hopefully all goes well.17:20

karine__sorry but I can not help you on this question, please go to the ubuntu mate forum from your country17:48
alexpci have created a pen driver bootable in ubunto mate 16,04 lts i should i have do to reverse it?17:48
karine__your question is too specific17:49
Akulialexpc, you mean make it normal non-bootable?17:49
Akulilike it was before17:49
alexpcyes a bootable pen driver17:49
Akulido you want to make it bootable, or make it not bootable?17:49
alexpcit worked wonderfully howsover i would like to rever it17:50
alexpci shoud i have do to rever it form bootable pen driver to normal pendriver17:51
Akulisure you can17:55
Akulialexpc, i'd do that with the terminal, but i'm sure others here or on #ubuntu know how to do that without the terminal :)17:55
alexpcterminal would be great but  my root  password does not work17:56
alexpcin terminal17:56
alexpci can enter system normally17:57
alexpcbut in terminal does not17:57
Akulioh, let's fix that17:57
alexpchow17:58
Akuliso, "sudo echo hello" doesn't work?17:58
Akuliwhat exactly do you get for 'sudo echo hello' without ' ?17:58
alexpci get " hello " back17:59
alexpcit ask for password  then " hello"18:01
Akuliso it's working18:03
Akulilet's go ahead and format your usb stick, plug it in18:03
Akulithen run this: lsblk | nc termbin.com 999918:03
gordonjcphm18:10
gordonjcphe left18:10
gordonjcpI was going to pick a minor nit that a "root password" shouldn't work18:11
gordonjcproot passwords are obsolete18:11
gordonjcpwe've had sudo for like 25 years now18:12
Guest10103Hi again guys. is anyone bored and wanting to share some knowledge>19:00
gordonjcpGuest10103: don't ask to ask19:20
LangleyHelp, I'm trying to boot my 16.04 USB stick but it's stuck forever on the MATE logo with the five dots changing color underneath19:34
AkuliLangley, how forever?19:41
AkuliAlso, does 14.04 work?19:41
Akulihow much ram?19:41
LangleyAt least 5 minutes. Haven't tried anything else. 16GB19:43
LangleyI'll try it on my other computer19:43
Akulithat's weird19:44
Akuliyou basically have the best computer in the world compared to my boxes, and it doesn't boot :D19:45
Akulitry 14.04 maybe it works19:45
Akuliyou can then upgrade to 16.04... or wait 15.10 might be better for that19:45
LangleyIt's not working on my other computer either... Maybe it's the USB stick, I couldn't use it to install Calculate Linux either19:48
AkuliThat might explain it19:48
gordonjcpLangley: could be a dodgy stick19:48
gordonjcpLangley: can you boot verbosely and see what it sticks on?19:49
Akulihow did you download the iso?19:49
Akulitorrent or no torrent?19:49
LangleyTorrents19:49
LangleyHow to boot verbosely?19:49
Akulii have no idea in ubuntu mate19:49
Akulibut if you can figure out how, remove 'quiet splash' from the boot optins19:50
Akulioptions19:50
LangleyOh I got into the menu by pressing Tab... gonna try checking the "disc" for defects19:52
LangleyAnd trying booting with another stick now19:53
LangleyHm that one booted instantly... so my stick is ruined, huh...19:53
LangleyOkay so do you people recommend swap? Even with 16 or 12 GB RAM?19:57
Akulino swap19:57
Akuliunless you want to suspend to disk19:57
Akuliwhich generally doesn't work that well in linux anyway :)19:58
LangleyCool19:58
AkuliLangley, which program did you use to write the image to stick?19:58
Langleydd19:59
Akulithat's not the problem then19:59
LangleyThe check found a problem with one file, on the other USB stick19:59
LangleyGreat I'm just getting "read error" on my first boot20:09
Akuliread error?20:12
Akuliweird20:12
LangleyI did install it to an old hard drive, but still...20:16
AkuliThat explains it to me :)20:19
Akulidon't expect erroneous hard drives to hold an operating system for more than a few weeks at a time :)20:19
LangleyBut why should it be erroneous20:21
LangleyIt installed fine on my other computer though...20:25
WattisLoveHello. Just installed the new 16.04 and had some trouble connecting to network. Typing the wifi password and clicking "connect" led to nothing. Only way was to manually edit the connection and save the password there.23:21
randallthat's a new one to me23:22
