BatshuaOkay, I am trying to save my housemate’s computer. The installs go fine, but then the system boots into busybox01:33
BatshuaI’m not sure what’s wrong, and I’m not getting much in the way of errors, just … it won’t boot?01:33
BatshuaWhich is sorta the ultimate error. Or non-error.01:34
BatshuaOr something.01:34

LeptospireHey folks. I need some help setting up a home media server's network connection. When I connect to my router via wifi I get internet but no network. When I connect to my router via ethernet I get network but not wifi. Can anyone help me? I am running lubuntu. Linksys can't seem to help me.20:18
tsimonq2Leptospire: #ubuntu would probably be the best place for that :)20:20
Leptospiretsimonq2: I will give it a shot20:21
tsimonq2Leptospire: have a nice day :)20:21

Lugalhi22:40
Lugalwhy cant I just deinstall some package from lubuntu, like abiword or sylpheed?  why?22:40
wxlLugal: you can. just do it. lubuntu-desktop is just an index file.22:43
geniiLugal: Remove lubuntu-desktop, then remove whatever subcomponent it installed that you don't want.22:45
swift110ok22:45
swift110i can put mate on lubuntu22:45
wxlswift110: if you want to get really freaky, you could put compiz and unity on there, too.22:46
geniiheh22:46
swift110yes22:46
Lugalbut why the fck i just cant remove packages and keep lubuntu-desktop?22:50
wxl!language | Lugal22:50
ubottuLugal: The main Ubuntu channels require that you speak in calm, polite English. For other languages, please visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList22:50
Lugalwhat is that a dependency?22:50
Lugalit was polite just wanted to be more precisely22:50
wxlLugal: the word you used between the and i is not consider polite by many people. it is those people that we seek not to offend.22:51
Lugalok sorry22:51
Lugalso  why is lubuntu bound too all programms like mail client, abiword, pidgin, ....? why I cant customise my lubuntu?22:52
wxlLugal: as we said, you can. all you have to do in order to do so is to remove the lubuntu-desktop index file. it will not actually remove any packages.22:53
wxlLugal: even the description explains this. try `apt-cache show lubuntu-desktop | grep remove`22:53
wxlincidentially, this is how ALL metapackages work.22:53
Lugaland then I reinstall it?22:53
wxlso kubuntu, mate, gnome, xubuntu, even ubuntu all have the same thing22:53
wxlno you do not install it, unless you want those applications that you removed to return22:54
Lugal:(22:54
geniiIf you reinstall it, the system will want to upgrade it's dependencies , which are the programs you are trying to remove22:54
wxlthis is how things work not only all across ubuntu but all across debian as well22:54
LugalNO22:54
Lugalits not in debian22:54
wxlsure it is22:54
wxlthere's an lxqt metapackage22:54
wxlworks the same way22:54
Lugalyou can remove what u want but u can keep what u want there22:54
Lugalwhats the purpose of it? thats not how FOSS should work22:56
wxlyou can ask the apt maintainers if you like22:56
LugalI mean why lubuntu team wants me to use sylpheed?22:56
tsimonq2!info lubuntu-desktop22:56
ubottulubuntu-desktop (source: lubuntu-meta): Lubuntu Desktop environment. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.65 (xenial), package size 2 kB, installed size 14 kB (Only available for i386; amd64; powerpc; armhf)22:56
tsimonq2!info lubuntu-core22:56
ubottulubuntu-core (source: lubuntu-meta): Lubuntu Desktop environment - minimal installation. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.65 (xenial), package size 3 kB, installed size 14 kB (Only available for i386; amd64; powerpc; armhf)22:56
tsimonq2I uninstall lubuntu-desktop and it leaves you with core22:56
tsimonq2that takes out all of the preinstalled stuffa22:57
tsimonq2*stuff22:57
tsimonq2and there you go22:57
wxlof course some underlying stuff is removed22:57
tsimonq2yeah22:57
tsimonq2but still22:57
wxlyou could, of course, just do a netinstall and only install the packages you want22:57
tsimonq2I did that for a family computer22:57
tsimonq2hah, been there done that :D22:57
wxlthere's a million ways to do this, as ther are across the foss world22:57
Lugalwith lubuntu core I still have desktop? and file manager?22:58
wxlLugal: `apt-cache show lubuntu-core` will show you exactly what's included22:58
wxlof course if you ONLY want to remove sylpheed, all you have to do is `apt-get -y remove sylpheed`22:59
tsimonq2there's another way to do that too wxl :D22:59
tsimonq2http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/lubuntu-desktop22:59
tsimonq2that gices decriptions for everything22:59
tsimonq2*gives22:59
tsimonq2Lugal: yep, that's correct23:00
wxlbtw install this in debian and then try to remove galculator then the lxde package (just a metapackage, as the description claims), will be removed23:00
wxlhttps://packages.debian.org/jessie/lxde23:00
wxlso there you go, same in debian23:00
tsimonq2^23:00
tsimonq2Lugal: so lubuntu-desktop just has extra stuff, lubuntu-core can just be installed for a minimal, lightweight desktop23:01
Lugalok, thanks guys, I will deinstall lubuntu-desktop, I think its not needed23:02
tsimonq2Lugal: like you said, that's FOSS ;)23:02
wxlLugal: the only thing you lose in removing it is the potential to pick up changes in lubuntu-desktop if anything about the seed changes. say we change mail clients, for example23:02
tsimonq2^ yeah that's a good point23:02
tsimonq2Lugal: but if you always use the same applications and require specific ones, you should have no problem with removing lubuntu-desktop23:03
Lugalcan i just deinstall ntpd from my system?23:13
wxlyep23:14
wxlyou can install or uninstall whatever you want23:15
Lugalwhere do I find it? its not installed according to synaptics but its running according to netstat -tupan23:16
wxl`dpkg -l | grep -i ntp` should help you find it23:18
