pittiLaney: btw, if you missed my ping from yesterday: http://picpaste.com/systemd-session.png :)08:12
Laneypitti: nice - and oh, I guess you didn't see my hack either08:13
pittiLaney: this is now a session half-started by upstart and half-started by systemd, and stuff is  working nicely08:13
pittiLaney: and converting more services is now fairly straightforward08:13
Laneypitti: https://paste.debian.net/712910/08:14
pittiso I think this is now ready for a nice two or three day sprint to fully do and land it08:14
pittiLaney: wohoo!!08:14
LaneyI added something to dbus-daemon to synthesise SystemdUnit=08:14
pittiLaney: so you gave up on systemd's dbus generator?08:14
Laneynein, but dbus-daemon needs that key to know to use systemd activation08:15
Laneyyou need both halves08:15
pittiLaney: oh, ok; in principle you can map that by traversing all units and looking at the BusName=, but that seems rather expensive08:15
Laneydbus-daemon doesn't want to call methods on systemd08:16
Laneyso I don't know how you would actually do this properly; would need to talk to smcv if this is something we would actually like to have08:17
Laneyfor this hack I added a flag --systemd-activate-all that you turn on when the generator is in use08:17
pittiLaney: originally I thought that systemd would create .socket units for Type=dbus units and do the activation by itself then; but I guess that's wrong?08:18
pittiit's still dbus-daemon doing the activation then08:19
pittiah, maybe the above was with kdbus08:19
Laneyhttps://cgit.freedesktop.org/dbus/dbus/tree/bus/activation.c#n188508:20
pittiLaney: WDYM with "dbus-daemon doesn't want to call methods on systemd"?08:21
Laneypitti: If you were thinking of having dbus-daemon use the systemd dbus api to enumerate all the dbus units08:22
pittiLaney: oh, no; I think that's rather expensive08:22
pittiLaney: I wondered how you auto-generate that mapping08:22
Laneymake an activation request for dbus-<busname>.service or so08:23
Laneythis breaks down when you consider that the generator isn't run for newly installed services08:26
Laneyonly at systemd's startup08:26
pittiLaney: so we coudl still manually add SystemdUnit= to the things we care about (I figure we don't actually have that many), and not rely on any magic08:32
Laneypitti: could do - I thought it was nice to have everything activated by systemd, so tried to make a proof of concept, but it's not that essential08:35
Laneyit is nice having everything logged into the journal properly08:35
pittiindeed, yes08:35
Laneybut if that's the only benefit then dbus could probably just log there itself08:35
pittithis would get rid of most of http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~pitti/bamf/systemd-unit/revision/63708:36
Laneyright - you wouldn't need to write a unit unless you want to do something special08:37

alexarnauddidrocks: Oh, I remember that ^^. I speak about to have dynamic configuration in CCSM. For example, we have "mouse theme" plugins that has all the configuration on a XML file and a ugly switch in the C++ code that create a dependency on package related to the hard coded theme. I speak about to move from hard to dynamic loading configuration. I don't know if you remember our discussion about this topic.10:24

rektidehi all. in unity-control-center->bluetooth, if i click a device, there's a pane with some details (paired, type, address, &c). it also has a "Connection" toggle (On/Off). I recently dist-upgraded from 15.04 where this toggle worked fine to 15.10, then 16.04, and this "Connection" toggle appears disabled for all of my devices15:02
seb128pitti, any option would work for me, we have enough space that you guys could come as well, only 1 extra bed though15:02
rektideit was a very important capability to attach/release devices, and i'm wondering if this Connection toggle works for anyone else atm, and am curious what kind of debug info I might be able to get, wondering if anyone has suggestions for things to try?15:03
seb128rektide, hey15:04
rektidehiya. :)15:05
seb128rektide, that control seems to reflect the status but not be clickable15:06
rektideseb128: in 15.04 it was an active control item. if i needed to stop using my bluetooth headset (perhaps so my phone could use it) i could toggle it15:07
seb128rektide, seems to be bug #1568679, that probably has to do with the bluez5 transition15:08

rektideseb128: & likewise, sometimes my headset wont reconnect automatically if it's available, but clicking the toggle to on would actively make a connection15:08
seb128rektide, you can use the indicator as a workaround, the controls work there15:08
rektidethat brings me to my second question: is there any way to get menu bar items (indicators) if i'm running a non Unity WM? I run awesomewm.15:09
seb128I don't know about that15:09
rektideback when i used openbox i'd use a program like stalonetray to get system tray things, but this menu-bar doesn't appear to interoperate with the regular fd.o specs (ICCWM &c)15:10
rektidequite aggravating!15:10
rektideor perhaps there's just some specific applet that i need to run- that'd make a ton of sense15:11

Laney• short week15:42
Laney• Worked some more on gtk 3.20 theme - feeling like I need to go into hiding and work on this full time - doing this bit by bit is probably not going to get it finished in a reasonable time (but the results are looking better every day)15:42
Laney• Did some poking on systemd --user, managed to break my laptop's boot, fixed that. As a PoC, hacked systemd's kdbus generator to generate Type=dbus units under dbus-daemon too, then hacked dbus-daemon to activate via systemd for these units, which is fun15:42
Laney• Some minor autopkgtest/appstream administration15:43
Laney• Fielded some questions from potential job candidates as a result of posting it on d-jobs15:43
Laney• Poked at -proposed a bit - few things stuck there without enough love, pinged people about some issues and fixed others15:43

pitti<VirtSubproc>: failure: Timed out on waiting for ssh connection16:06
Laneypitti: ktnef didn't do that - it finished but the results aren't visible in the UIs16:06

pittiah16:06
pittiLaney: ok, don't know; is it on swift?16:06
Laneyyep16:06
pittiLaney: could just be debci not catching up16:06
pittiLaney: britney doesn't see it either?16:06
pittiLaney: worth looking into the britney logs then whether it gets some 404s or so16:06
Laneyah man, of course it's caught up now16:08
Laneymaybe IS were still fixing it16:09
rektidei appear to only get some non-interactive list of categories when i run indicator-loader3. is there anything else i should be running, or some way to get access to the underlying services?16:09
rektideah ha! i have to ru nthe service too, then it works!16:10
Trevinhoah seb128 one thing I forgot to mention is that I've done that patch for gtk crash involving ups... Once desrt can check the menutracker, it would be nice to SRU it16:18
seb128Trevinho, k, feel free to get the SRU ready and go through ubuntu-sponsors, might help you to get some bonus point to get upload rights ;-)16:19

Trevinhobut... I probably should add some g_critical's for upstream...16:20
seb128k16:20
seb128if you don't segfault is that still going to load to user visible issues?16:21
Trevinhoseb128: no, also is pretty unknown when the issue hapens16:21
Trevinhoseb128: but it should be when remving some menu entries... Although since menus are shown only when requested I figure this won't create visual issues (personally I got the crash when not plying with anything but running an app)16:22
seb128k16:25

seb128right16:26
pittiseb128: and it sounds a lot more fun too!16:26

Trevinhoseb128: about the snap script for launching gtk stuff and various deps parts for integrating with unity7, I think we should move them to the wiki to have just one source for our tools, isn't it?17:11
seb128Trevinho, the wiki is not really a code hosting solution...17:15
Trevinhoseb128: I do agree17:15
seb128what's wrong with having the reference example in a vcs?17:15
Trevinhoseb128: but I hope once a better place is decided, then everything will be moved there smoothly17:15
seb128well the better place is snapcraft itself17:15
seb128those are only hacks17:16
seb128they shouldn't be needed and should go away over time17:16
Trevinhoseb128: well, not sure... I think it should allow to have not-centralized parts17:16
Trevinhowell, a centralized repo, with no-centralized parts17:16
seb128why not17:17
seb128but that's not a wiki17:17
seb128unsure what's best meanwhile though17:17
Trevinhoyeah, it was just because we're currently copy and pasting stuff around, and everytime we add/change something with the risk of losing the knowedge we get17:17
seb128well, the wiki doesn't solve that17:17
seb128it just add yet another location to update/keep in sync17:18
Trevinhowhile using a single repo, were we add generic scripts that can be loaded through a part in the wiki (as it is in for qt5 launcher), then we avoid a little this problem17:18
seb128sorry but I don't understand the wiki part17:18
seb128I'm all for having a common wrapper in a vcs17:18
seb128that's sort of what the gnome-calculator example was supposed to be17:19
seb128our common playground so we work on the same example17:19
Trevinhoyeah, but once we want to test new things, (as it happened for hello unity) we have to reuse those scripts instead of getting the same from a shared repo17:19
seb128you mean?17:21
tseliotmhall119: can you have mvo file a bug report about it, please?17:22
seb128ideally if there are improvements to do they would be commited to the gnome-calculator version17:22
seb128then you can copy that one over to your other source17:22
seb128but sure we can have a reference vcs17:22
seb128I just think a vcs is better than a wiki17:23
