stormchaser3000_anyone available to help?00:30
AlderinHi All. I used the Ubuntu 16.04 Mini CD and installed Xubuntu, but there are no options in Settings for Printers. I wanted a very light install, but I've now installed the Ubuntu Software Center, and I still can't find what to add to get a Printers icon in Settings. I hope someone can help, thanks in advance!00:31
Alderin@stormchaser3000 I've never had an nvidia card not show up in a system unless it was disabled in BIOS.00:32
Alderinor DOA.00:32
stormchaser3000_Alderin: how do i enable it?00:33
stormchaser3000_(that is another thing i was wondering about)00:33
stormchaser3000_i know how to access the bios00:33
stormchaser3000_but i couldn't find and setting for it00:33
AlderinThat varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer, and I don't go in there too often.00:33
AlderinTypically, there is a mention of "Onboard Video" that you can enable or disable.00:34
AlderinSometimes, the BIOS will refused to allow another video card to run if Onboard is enabled.00:35
AlderinThough I haven't had issues with that myself in years.00:35

ubottuAlderin: system-config-printer-gnome (source: system-config-printer): Printer configuration GUI. In component main, is optional. Version 1.5.7+20160212-0ubuntu2 (xenial), package size 142 kB, installed size 1455 kB00:41
AlderinThanks, I'll try that. Since I was using Xfce, I tried system-config-printer-common, but that didn't do it.00:46
AlderinYup, that worked. Thanks!00:48

flocculantmust have sorted it out16:02
MorrogGood morning (UGT)18:58
MorrogWhenever I log out on 16.04, I see a black screen with a message similar to '/dev/sda3: clean, 131838/991232 files, 1193255/3933482 blocks'18:59
MorrogIs it possible to hide this message? I think I shouldn't be seeing it after a simple logout18:59
PiciMorrog: you mean it briefly shows up when you logout before showing the login manager again?19:05
Morrogyes, exactly19:05
PiciMorrog: I'd think it might actually be showing up when you boot, but since logging out does things to xwindows, it falls back to that.19:05
Morrogprobably19:05
Morrogit also isn't a big issue, obviously. but i'd rather not see it :)19:06
MorrogPici, any clue how I could make that message disappear?19:18

Art_Hi, Im using xubuntu 16.04, and trying to move the panel backup from one installation to another. When I click 'apply' however, the panel looks nothing like it should....not even remotely. Any idea what I might be doing wrong???19:54
albstill having problems transitioning to another system using the panel backup file (both systems arexubuntu 16.04). I can import the file to the new install, but when I click 'apply', the changes made to the panel don't look like they should. The new panel is almost unusable. Any ideas?20:41
flocculantalb: and what's different? in the wrong place? launchers not set up properly? all we've got is it's not right :)20:46
albflocculant, ok, some of the panel entries are on the left, some are on the right, many panel entries missing. It's just not right.20:47
albI think the backup and restore function is broken.20:48
flocculantwell - it might have a bug with your setup - but it works ok for me - and I started using it in development - and still am20:49
flocculantunless something has changed since yak started dev of course20:50
albflocculant,  I can post pictures.20:50
albflocculant, both installs are fairly new, but there were no errors during the install.20:51
flocculantyep20:51
flocculantalb: did you export?20:51
albok, it will take me awhile...yes, export went fine, import went fine.20:52
albflocculant,  I also tried manually moving thebackup file to the new computer and it appeared on the backup screen as being 'available'....but when I click'apply' its a disaster.20:53
flocculantalb: ok - after importing - then select - then apply config20:54
albflocculant, yes, correct. I moved the cursor to the new configuration file, then clicked 'apply'.20:55
flocculantand it failed then20:55
albflocculant, yes, the results of the 'apply' command were much different then they should have been. I suppose it could be an export problem.20:56
albflocculant, my new system has an ssd, which is why I want to transition to it.....but, have used both systems enough to know there isn't a system problem or corrupted drive.20:58
flocculantyup20:59
flocculantI'm not saying that the issue is local - just that I've not been able to confirm it :)20:59
albflocculant,   I'll go take some screen captures and post them, it will take awhile::>20:59
flocculantalb: hang on a mo20:59
albflocculant,   Maybe I could sned you the backup file and you could try it??21:00
flocculantwas what I was thinking21:00
albflocculant, hanging.21:00
flocculantalb: no need - took the words out of my mouth21:00
albflocculant, I have no idea how to send a file on IRC though, but if I post it you can download it.21:01
albback in a while.....21:01
flocculantalb: ok do that21:01
flocculantbut I'm not about for much longer tonight21:02
xubuntu01wSo many peoples say linux is so good compare to windows. I use Xubuntu and lubuntu. It is allway so many errors. Now it is frozen after i install the updates.21:13
xubuntu01wThe aplication closed unexpectly and so on.. I gues i have to reinstall. I am tired of it.21:14
knomewhy would you need to reinstall?21:15
knomewhich application closed unexpectedly?21:15
knomehow is your system frozen?21:15
knomeand for debugging, which xubuntu version are you using?21:15
xubuntu01wIf it crash and not will work.. I dont know.. the update program is frozen.21:17
knomeopen a terminal and run "lsb_release -a" without the quotes to find out your version21:18
xubuntu01wI found software in the taskmanager. Shud i use stop, kill or terminate ?21:18
xubuntu01wwhat is the diferents ?21:19
knomeplease answer the questions i am asking you so i can help21:20
xubuntu01wI am using 16.0421:20
xubuntu01w64 bit21:20
knomeok, so is it only the updater that is frozen, not the whole system?21:20
xubuntu01wI tought all was frozen.. but it is only the updater.21:21
knomeokay21:22
knomeso which application was it that closed unexpectedly, in case it would be connected to this issue?21:22
xubuntu01wI dont know.. It was a box showing up when the updates was running. It say a aplication was closing unexpectly.  I shoose to leave the aplication closed.21:23
knomeok, so if you click on the close button on the updater, does it ask if you want to terminate the process?21:24
xubuntu01wIt is the quit button. It is frozen blue.21:25
xanguaDid you add any repositories recently?21:27
xubuntu01wno21:27
albI cant post on paste.ubuntu.com....they dont allow png and zip files.21:33
knomexubuntu01w, can you get the updater to close?21:33
knome!imagebin | alb21:33
ubottualb: Screenshots can be made with the [PrtScr] button. Want to show us a screenshot of your problem? Upload an image to http://imgur.com/ and link the created page here.21:33
xubuntu01wI think so.. But in the taskmanager there is diferents commands. kill ? terminate ?21:33
xubuntu01wI will not make it worse.21:34
knomethey should be similar in function but try kill first.21:34
albflocculant, and knome  http://imgur.com/a/GiTxu shows both screens.21:36
xubuntu01wIt is closed now. I am not sure the updates is correct after this. It was many of them. Shud i restart and let i look for updtates again ?21:37
knomexubuntu01w, don't restart21:37
knomexubuntu01w, run the following in a terminal21:37
knomexubuntu01w, sudo apt-get update21:37
knomexubuntu01w, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade21:37
xubuntu01wok21:37
knomethe first one will make sure your repositories are updated, the second one does all updates21:38
knometake note of any error messages potentially popping up21:38
albflocculant,    I dont know where to upload the configuration file, imgur.com only accepts pictures!!! argh.21:40
xubuntu01wIt is done.21:40
xubuntu01wThere was nothing new installed.21:40
knomexubuntu01w, then you should be good to go.21:41
knomealb, sometimes problems arise if you haven't got all panel plugins that are used in the backup installed21:42
knomeeg. if you used a non-default panel plugin in the configuration you are importing to a fresh system, make sure that's installed first21:42
xubuntu01wThe maybe all is ok..but after all updtaes libre office and many things maybe i shud restart ?21:42
knomexubuntu01w, generally you don't need to restart after updates, but it might be useful or in some cases required to restart the apps themself21:43
xubuntu01wmostly after new kernel i have seen.21:44
albthe panel backup fileis at http://pastebin.com/detfTdFj21:44
knomexubuntu01w, yes, then the reboot is required if you want to start using the new kernel21:44
knomealb, that didn't work out...21:45
xubuntu01wknoem.. Anyway thank you for the help. I will try this and hope it will works like normal.21:45
knomexubuntu01w, have fun with xubuntu21:45
xubuntu01wknome i meen.21:45
albknome, both are fairly new installs and both updated. How do I check to see if plugiuns are present???21:46
knomealb, at the moment the only way to do that is manually; just see which plugins are used and make sure they are installed in both systems21:47
albknome, I did notice that the donor system won't let me export now....I click onthe button to save and nothing happens.21:48
albknome, is this work in progress...still in development??? Or did I do something wrong??21:49
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
knomeeverything is always work in progress, but generally, it should work21:49
knomeit doesn't mean you are necessarily doing anything wrong either21:50
knomemaybe you have hit some bug that is unseen for now21:50
albmanual setting up is a big pain.....I sure wish the restore would work.21:50
albknome, ok, were you able to download the backup file??21:51
knomealb, no. the pastebin you showed us only contains the local filename21:51
albargh....ok. Let me see if I can figure itout.21:51
albok,pastebinsays only textfiles are allowed::>21:53
knomeif you open the compressed file, you'll notice a file called config.txt inside; pastebining that might be enough21:54
knomei mean, i'm not sure if it helps that we see what's inside the configuration...21:54
albknome still looking for awebsiteto paste the wholefilein.21:58
knomei don't think it would be sensible to accept compressed files21:59
knomegoogle drive or some other cloud service if you have an account21:59
squinty!paste22:00

knomesquinty, he's trying to paste a compressed .tar.bz2 file, those won't help22:00
squintyknome, yes understood... he said he was searching for a site to paste and you told him to extract config.txt (or whatever is relevant)..presumably he will do that first. :-)22:02
alb!paste22:03
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.22:03
knomesquinty, indeed, but he's pasted stuff to pastebins already...22:05
albI still cant find a place to post the panel backup file!!! aaarrrgghhhh, I give up.22:14
albknome, OK, I extracted the archive and there are only 3 launchers in the panel backup!!! That can't be right!!!! There should be at least 10! I will post the text file (config.txt)........22:21
albknome, ok, text at https://pastebin.mozilla.org/887568722:23
knomealb, as you see yourself, only three launchers are mentioned in the file22:24
knomeso either something is going wrong or you have export the wrong file22:24
knomeexported too22:25
albyes, thanks knome, I need to look at the exporting process I think!!!! Sure with there was a way to manually make the configuration...say from a command line::>22:26
knomeyou can make manually everything... even write a shakespeare novel22:26
knomewhether it's sensible or faster than another way is a different thing22:26
albyes, I'll stop blaming the recipient system, the problem is likely in the donor system!!!! thanks so much for your assistance!!!22:28
knomenp, goood luck22:28
albMaybe I should just copy the entire home folder into the new install!!!!!!22:29
knomebtw, you don't need to shout (!!!!!!)22:29
albi get excited:>22:29
albso sorry, not intended to be malicious:<>22:30
knomejust hold your horses :P22:30
albholding22:30
albim looking at the config.txt, it seems pretty simple. Maybe I could just roll my own:>22:31
knomewell...22:31
knomefeel free to22:32
albcopying the entire home folder from one install to the other is looking like a more practical solution too.22:33
knomethat's one way to do it22:34
albNot sure what to do, but sure would like to get the SSD system running!!!!! The SSDflies!22:37
albflies22:37
albtake care and again, thanks.22:38
