rustycogi have a tin-foil-hat kinda question, is there spyware in kubuntu like there was in ubuntu?04:49
daxif you mean the amazon unity stuff: no04:51
rustycoghaha yes dax exactly05:01
rustycogso they aren't trying to sneak in stuff like that?  because I got discouraged using any canonical products after that fiasco05:01
rustycogbut then I heard soemthing about canonical  getting all worked up with kubuntu05:02
rustycogand wanted to distance themselves from that project05:02
daxnot that i know of, no05:09

irctc428Hey. I tried Kubuntu for the first time yesterday, but got a problem. Everything went fine, for cuple of hours, but suddenly it just froze. The SSD led stopped flashing. I used the physical off button to reboot, but a few seconds after login the same thing happened, over and over. Anyone ever experienced this?06:39
irctc428Kubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bi06:40
irctc428t06:40
hateballirctc428: Does ~/.xsession-errors contain anything exciting?06:43
hateballirctc428: what GPU/driver are you using?06:43
irctc428I have no accessible logs at the moment as I reinstalled with Xubuntu to see if it's more stable.06:45
irctc428The GPU is an intergrated Intel Skylake06:45
irctc428Driver is just what Kubuntu installed for me06:45
irctc428The GPU driver is what I suspected mysel06:46
irctc428f06:46
hateballirctc428: you do know you could have just "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" rather than reinstall the entire system06:49
hateballirctc428: And if you're not running Plasma, as well have no logs, I don't see how we can help06:50
irctc428No, it froze 2 seconds in after every login..06:51
hateballthere are issues with kwin vsync and intel gpus, that much I know06:51
irctc428I did boot into recovery mode, so logs were accessible then. I will try to reinstall at a later point, and want to know what to look for then.06:53
irctc428would it be the same to "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" from xubuntu?06:53
irctc428Then I'll just get to choose which to boot in grub?06:54
calherHow do I get an on-screen keyboard and an icon to activate it in the task bar?06:59
calheror bottom panel, or w/e06:59
makinenanyone using tiling kwin script?07:08
makinenit breaks gvim :(07:09
calher> gvim07:11
calherkek07:11
hateballmakinen: any reason you'd use gvim instead of kate with vim bindings?07:12
hateballunder plasma, that is07:12
calherYeah, or just regular Vim?07:14
calheror <Censored>07:14
makinenI've been using gvim for years07:14
makinendoes kate even have the same functionality as gvim even with the vim bindings07:15
calherAs a Vim user, I found GVim to be a tacky terminal emulator for Vim.07:15
makinenregular vim doesn't have tabs :)07:16
calhermakinen: I see tabs at https://vimuser.org/07:18
makinencan I switch between them by clicking one?07:21
makinentheyre buffers instead of tabs though07:21
calher> editing text07:21
calher> clicking07:21
calherDOES_NOT_COMPUTE07:21
calherThe only person who's allowed to click while editing text is Ken.07:22
calherBecause ACME.07:22
makinenwell, I'm using a browser at the same time when I'm coding in vim07:23
calherfrecel: Do you use GVim?07:24
makinenclicking tabs fits just fine to my workflow07:24
calherBut GVim...07:24
calherIt's the tackiest GUI I've ever seen.  Emacs at least makes the GUI a full experience in its own right.07:25
calherWhen I used Vim, I only used GVim because it was the only version of Vim I could run from a flash drive.07:26
calher(At school)07:26
makinenI'm open to suggestions for replacing it07:27
makinentabs and open file menu are probably the only reasons why I prefer gvim over regular vim07:27
makinenoh and sometimes I use a menu action for splitting the window because I don't remember the corresponding vim command07:30
calhermakinen: ask vimuser @ #librespeech07:33
calherim not up to speed on vim, i use emacs07:33
calherat least, now i do07:33
calheri'm intending to practice vim soon tho07:33
user|85067hi guys07:37
calherHi.07:38
user|85067I am having trouble dual-booting Kubuntu 16.04 alongside Windows 10. I installed Kubuntu 16.04 maybe a month ago and the installation went fine, but now, after the partitioning screen, just as the installation is actually starting, it tells me it can't unmount /cdrom.07:38
user|85067Has anyone else encountered something similar?07:38
xieyihow could I delete widget from command line07:59
xieyiI found how to do it in kde 4 http://askubuntu.com/questions/171119/how-to-control-kde-4-9-0-plasma-widgets-from-command-line08:00
xieyibut it doesnt work in kde 508:01
acheron_ukplasma config files have moved to ~/.config/ in plasma 508:04
makinenhow can I replace kwin with something else?08:46
TomTomgood morning. any idea when kmail 5.2.x will be available in xenial backports? this khtml/kmail bug which prevents the rendering of inline images is very annoying :-)08:50
hateballmakinen: go into "standard programs" and set a different window manager09:20
hateballwhy anyone runs plasma without kwin however boggles the mind09:21
makinenthere is no good tiling support in kwin :(/09:22
makinenI can't find "standard programs" settings is it in system settings?09:27
hateballmakinen: hmmm, I just search in krunner09:30
makinenit won09:31
makinenit won't find it either09:32
hateballmakinen: /usr/bin/kcmshell5 componentchooser09:40
makinenhateball: thx can I replace kwin without logging out?09:50
hateballmakinen: well you can run whateverWM --replace most likely09:58
acheron_uk'kcmshell5 componentchooser' in terminal should get you to http://i.imgur.com/wF8sBEO.png10:04
DarkDaysHi10:08
DarkDaysAnyone know how to launch the kubuntu desktop on a vps?10:09
makinenI restarted it but I'm not sure if awesome was running instead of kwin :p10:11
makinenmaybe I just fix some bugs in the tiling script10:12
smusichi guys, i'm here for the third time since yesterday... i haven't managed to fix kubuntu 16.04 installation issues yet10:46
smusicAnyone here?10:46
hateballsmusic: What are your issues?10:46
smusichateball: As soon as I click Install Now (after choosing partition scheme), I get an error that /cdrom cannot be unmounted. I am installing from a USB stick.10:47
smusicApparently, one of the existing (Windows) partitions is mounted at /cdrom.10:47
smusicI have no idea why.10:47
hateballsmusic: oh so it's a dualboot? not touched that in a decade+ so I dont really have any idea10:49
hateballsmusic: tried searching launchpad?10:50
smusicYeah, I've tried googleing, no luck. I was able to find that other people have had the issue, but their workarounds proved ineffective.10:50
hateballsmusic: and the windows os is properly shut off and not left hibernating?10:51
smusicThe weirdest part is that I've already installed Kubuntu 16.04 about a month ago, and it worked.10:51
hateballI remember someone talking about that causing trouble10:51
smusicYup. I've had multiple distros before this.10:51
smusicWhy does Kubuntu LiveCD mount existing partitions?10:53
smusicWell, it mounted only of the existing partitions.10:54

tessio_hello..12:07
tessio_it there any plans for Qt 5.6.1 on Kubuntu 16.04 via PPA?12:07
tessio_I'm waiting for the multi monitor fix to finally jump on the Plasma5 bus12:09
chinmoyi have just started wirting a patch for a bug in plasma. will anyone  tell me what should be my course of action after i have completed coding the patch ?12:13
yossarianukchinmoy: good man (sorry not sure of the process), thanks for working on KDE12:14
mparilloI would guess step 1. is to get a KDE Identity: https://identity.kde.org/12:15
chinmoymparillo: well i think i have completed step 1.12:15
mparilloStep 2 is to join #kde-devel and #plasma and ask there.12:16
chinmoyok :p12:16
mparilloIf the bug has a number on bugs.kde.org, I would offer your patch there, and reference it in the channels.12:17
chinmoyi was thinking whether there are some general steps one must follow after writing a patch.12:17

irctc370Hey. What is the GUI in kubuntu called? Is it KDE or Plasma? What is Plasma in relationship to KDE?12:47
BluesKaj!plasma12:48
irctc370!plasma12:48
BluesKaj!info plasma12:48
ubottuPackage plasma does not exist in xenial12:48
BluesKaj!plasma-desktop12:49
BluesKaj!info plasma-desktop12:49
ubottuplasma-desktop (source: plasma-desktop): Tools and widgets for the desktop. In component universe, is optional. Version 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1 (xenial), package size 1575 kB, installed size 7751 kB12:49
BluesKajoptional?12:49
BluesKajthink the bot info needs some updating12:52
PiciBluesKaj: why do you say that?12:53
BluesKajtry installing the OS without plasma12:54
irctc370So what is Plasma?12:55
BluesKajirctc370, https://www.kde.org/workspaces/plasmadesktop/12:56
irctc370Yeah, I kind of understand that it's the GUI, but what is KDE then?12:58
irctc370And I can also read about that on wikipedia or whatever, but I still don't really understand the difference12:59
EvilRoeyKDE is a framework including Plasma, under-the-hood engines for various important things and libraries for programs13:00
EvilRoeyirctc370: plasma is the name of the desktop user interface13:01
EvilRoeyirctc370: programs can be written using KDE libraries, and they are called KDE programs13:01
irctc370Ok, so KDE without Plasma is just a cli?13:01
irctc370"just"13:01
EvilRoeyirctc370: you can use KDE in the CLI yes13:01
EvilRoeyKDE without Plasma still involves things like KWin13:01
EvilRoeykwin is the window manager13:02
BluesKajbut it's not just a cli13:02
EvilRoeyplasma is the panel and desktop widgets13:02
irctc370Does Plasma run on top of kwin?13:02
BluesKajmore like within13:03
PiciBluesKaj: the bot is not specific to Kubuntu.  None of the desktop packages are required.  iirc, only things that are part of the base install, like bash, are required13:03
irctc370Can I start plasma from xubuntu? I have installed kubuntu-desktop from apt-get.13:05
BluesKajPici, yeah , but kubuntu is going in a different direction than ubuntu , think some of the info should be more specific to kubuntu in the kubuntu chat..it's confusing otherwise13:05
antixon 16.04 how do I  (1) get rid of a note on my desktop, (2) get the notes applet to stop making notes when I middle click the desktop?13:06
PiciBluesKaj: as long as it uses the same ubuntu repositories, I can't tell it to do otherwise.13:07
BluesKajPici, yeah that's an unfortunate setup, the flavours should have their info db13:09
BluesKajown info db13:09
antixanswer: right click the non-existant "titlebar" on the note to get the option to close it, lock widgets on the desktop to stop the middle click behavior13:18

DclRulesI'm having trouble with akonadi and its related packages. I'm thinking its a patch problem with Kubuntu because it is using some weird switches when it calls mysql as it starts. So how do you report such a bug?14:00
eleziumI was browsing the KDE Configuration and I see a choice for the Renedering backend: XRender, OpenGL.. which one is faster?14:54
BluesKajelezium, usually OpenGL, but that depends on your gpu capabilities14:57
eleziumnvidia 97014:58
eleziumopenGL, I believe?14:58
BluesKajyup14:58

eleziumAnother one.. I can't find where the ctrl-f9 is mapped.. any clue?14:58
BluesKajthat card should handle 3.114:59
eleziumk. I just swtiched to 3 1..14:59
BluesKajelezium, no idea about ctl+ F915:00
eleziumhaa! found the f9!15:00
BluesKajdoes nothing here, it's not mapped to anything15:00
eleziumhttp://imgur.com/F9QYKa215:02
rattkingelezium: system settings, shortcuts, global keyboard shortcuts, kde component system settings15:03
rattkingburied way way down15:04
BluesKajok , but i don't bother withg KB shortcuts15:04
eleziumI don't bother much.. except when they overlap with the software I use ;)15:04
BluesKajnot many anyway15:04
* rattking <3's keyboard short cuts15:04
eleziumI just use the basics one, really.15:05

MrokiiHello. I have a problem. I've recently installed Kubuntu 16.04 on a laptop but forgot my password so I went into the Greb-menu to get into the root-console to set a new password (which seemed to work). But when I tried to enter the password on the graphical login-screen, the login-button becomes greyed out (every button as it seems), I can't reboot or relog and the mouse cursor turns to something resembling15:59
Mrokiian X.15:59
MrokiiI'm not sure if it's related to the password change, but the last time I used the laptop (before the password-change) I was able to log in without problems.15:59

allesz_I have a weird issue here with my kubuntu 16.04 install. If I switch between apps and start typing it takes sometimes up to 7 s to see the written context. could it be that there is something wrong with the task switcher?  I am using Cover Switch.20:53
allesz_this is happening for example switching from evolution to calligra sheets20:53
allesz_I hope not but could it be that switching between QT and GTK apps that there is a time penalty. The typed text doesnt get lost it appears but very late.20:55
allesz_hmmm could be also plank's fault.21:17
