paddatrapperMorning Kilos, everyone 07:43
superflygood evening paddatrapper07:54
anton_mayMornings all08:02
anton_mayI'm sitting with a conundrum. We have a 10Meg fibre line at the office with Neotel. Then at Neotel DC we a cabinet, with a 100Meg connection. Between the sites we have a pptp tunnel. Speedtests we get 8Meg dl and about 7Meg ul. Yet when we rsync between the two sites through the VPN tunnel we barely reach 1Meg. Even mysql replications don't even reach 1Meg. But the lines are maxing out. At my wits end with Neotel as their QoS is wrongly configured 08:07
anton_maysomewhere. Having a meeting with them today.08:07
Kilosai!08:12
Kiloswhen it warms up your head  will think more clearly08:12
anton_mayBeen coming since summer, so ja will see08:15
Kiloslol08:15
Kilosthats tricky08:15
anton_mayyip, even with the 2% extra overhead on the packet we should still at least hit 5Megs on the vpn tunnel08:16
Kilosvpn is private network right?08:17
Kilosnot a virtual network08:17
anton_mayyip08:17
anton_mayencrypted network08:18
Kiloswill mtr not show you bottlenecks08:18
anton_maynope mrtg is reporting maxing the lines out when we copy a few megs over, no bottlenecks. 08:19
Kilossjoe, so what is adding the brakes08:19
Kilosinetpro read and explain why and where prob is please08:20
anton_maythats it I don't know on Neotel side. We have a managed fw on the DC side08:20
anton_maythe pptp on our side is compressed with mtu of 145008:21
anton_mayOur fibre at the office is 100Meg line, but QoS to 10Meg. My biggest suspicion is that QoS config08:22
Kilosis the prob the same both ways08:23
Kilosor cant you test from other side08:23
anton_maysame results which ever way08:23
Kilosnot perhaps something to do with the encryption08:24
anton_maydisbaled encryption on both sides and still same results08:25
Kilosthe nsa is slowing it down while they decrypt it08:25
Kilosoh my08:25
anton_maylol could be08:25
Kilosso both sides connect to neotel08:25
anton_mayyip08:25
Kiloshave you tried talking to one one their techies08:26
anton_maybahwahahahaha, the lot from India08:26
Kilosprob must surely be by them08:26
Kilosoh08:26
Kilosyou first have to sy salaam08:27
Kilossay08:27
Kilosits that holiday atm isnt it08:27
Kilostheblazehen ideas man08:28
anton_mayall they do is deable the config so we get the full 100Meg at the office then all is working 100%. Then they implement it then their reason is that it is bottlenecking and loosing packets. Yet they can't proof to me that it is and I don't see any packet being dropped on our interfaces08:28
Kilosim a greeter  bot08:28
anton_mayDumela08:29

anton_maywtf???08:31
anton_mayDear Anton08:31
anton_may 08:31
anton_mayThis is a 10 Mb service  the speed that is hitting is fair as per the contention ratio of the product. So we  need to close this  ticket.08:31
Kiloswow08:32
anton_mayContention ratio = NeoInternet Standard 25%08:32
Kilos1m isnt 25% of 10m08:32
anton_mayNope08:32
Kilosask them can you send them a calculator to work out the percentages08:33
anton_mayhahaha 08:35
Kilostalk to someone in charge there not their help desk08:35
anton_mayJa we have "customer representative"08:36
Kilosits sad how peeps get away with shoddy service08:41
anton_mayYea, but I think Neotel has had the wrong leadership, like the country.08:42
MaNIneotel, what a disaster08:50
anton_mayYou telling me08:50
MaNIpretty sure there was some behind the table non-compete stuff going on there08:50
MaNIwe are in a country where the entire market hates telkom - the market was there to take for any competent second national operator08:51
MaNIbungling on that level can only be deliberate08:51
anton_maydeliberae or not, it's shocking to say the least08:52
=== hateball_jnr is now known as zipper
theblazehenanton_may: pptp goes over TCP right?10:31
theblazehenDropping packets is a normal way of slowing down tcp, but the double changing window size fucks things up10:32
theblazehenhttp://sites.inka.de/bigred/devel/tcp-tcp.html10:32
theblazehenanton_may: can you do some UDP speed tests?10:32

divansantanawhile we moaning about neotel. I'll def agree. Using neotel uncapped 4mbps. And their service is shocking and staff clueless. :( Anyway, at least FTTH is nearby for me.11:09
* theblazehen likes crystal web, even if security isn't the best12:04

theblazehenDocker doesn't wanna work right in a lxd container :(12:37
theblazehenhi andrewlsd12:37
andrewlsdhi theblazehen 12:38
andrewlsdlayers. 12:39
andrewlsdhmm.12:39
theblazehenIt should work. Could be a xenial kernel issue12:39
andrewlsdwhat isn't working? the port forwarding stuff?12:39

andrewlsd\o anton_may 12:39
theblazehenDocker compose of https://github.com/mirumee/saleor12:39
anton_may@ theblazehen udp speedtest result are in12:40
andrewlsdaah. hmm. docker *compose*... that might be the issue.12:40
theblazehenty anton_may. Will look more this evening12:40
theblazehenandrewlsd: Problem with the build script or whatever it is you think? Or what12:41
theblazehenhttps://gist.github.com/336f1e5f60e0ae8a8db22001c26d1ac312:41
anton_mayyea don't worry, already seeing abysmal results12:42
theblazehenYup, build hasn't failed yet on desktop. Sucks. Might need to set up a kvm for docker then :/12:42
theblazehenI applied the docker profile to the lxd container12:42
andrewlsdI've actually never used docker inside LXD, although I know it is *supposed* to work12:43
theblazehenThe test docker image worked12:43
andrewlsdis your LXD container perhaps needing to run specially privileged?12:44
andrewlsdin order to run a privileged docker image?12:44
theblazehenI think docker-compose should complain? And it failed at an apt-get install, so I doubt it12:44
theblazehenhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coda_(file_system) seems interesting12:45
* theblazehen is doubtfull of the 'S' in my SSHD :(12:48
magespawnbrb12:55
* theblazehen is starting to regret buying 32 GB ram for current vm host. Should have gona new mobo + cpu with 64 GB maybe..12:55
theblazehenhttp://bellard.org/linmodem/ :D I hope this works12:55
theblazehen>  last update: Mar 6, 2000 12:56
theblazehenWell then12:56
theblazehenEh. lxd can live migrate. Why not both? :D 96 GB ram ought to be enough for everybody12:57
theblazehenAs can kvm12:59
theblazehenBut then I need shared storage..12:59
theblazehenGuess I could then get *another* box running dragonfly bsd with hammerfs :D12:59
theblazehenBut I think 10 gbit hardware is expensive :(12:59
theblazehenAnd I'd need another box for storage. Current motherboard was decently expensive but only 6 sata ports..13:00
paddatrapperDoes anyone know how to get the web results from a search using DuckDuckGo API? I can only seem to find help with its instant answers which isn't what I'm looking for...13:05
theblazehenpaddatrapper: https://github.com/thibauts/duckduckgo13:08
paddatrappertheblazehen: Thanks13:09
andrewlsdtheblazehen: get lots of gigabit nics, and bond them13:13
andrewlsdtheblazehen: also "mooseFS"13:13
theblazehenandrewlsd: How much would a switch be that does that? Or directly connect storage to both the hosts?13:17
theblazehenandrewlsd: Opioion on lizard vs moose fs?13:18
theblazehenAnd currently latency between desktop to host is 0.8 ms (wow, quite slow..), so don't really need local storage on each host13:19
theblazehenAnd why mose over gluster?13:19
andrewlsdno idea. 13:20
andrewlsdtheblazehen: any desktop switch could do it13:20
andrewlsdunmanaged if you use the right "mode=..." bit for the bond13:21
theblazehenAh, yes. was thinking of bonding 10 gbit..13:21
theblazehen:D13:21
andrewlsdif you want link-aggregation 802.3ad, then you need a managed switch13:21
andrewlsdbut for xor or round-robin load-balancing you don't.13:22
andrewlsdtheblazehen: I can't remember between Lizard and Moose. Lizard is a newer fork of Moose, IIRC.but I also don't know what benefits/requirements they have as compared to Ceph, or Gluster13:22
andrewlsdGluster seems to have quite VM hosting performance.13:23
andrewlsdwhy not just use NFS share?13:23
andrewlsdas long as the VM's image file isn't being written to in two places simultaneously you should be good to go with NFS.13:24
theblazehenandrewlsd: Yeah, was thinking nfs share with dragonfly bsd as host. But need to bond or use 10 gbit nics13:24
andrewlsdeven if using Gluster internal disks shared between two hosts you'd need at least 3 GBit in order to be able to run more than a couple of VMs13:25
theblazehenBecause ssd > 1gbit13:25
theblazehenOk13:26
andrewlsdso I'd recomend looking for a quad-port gigabit LAN card.13:26
andrewlsdand then just back-to-back cable them13:26
andrewlsdthen bond, and watch those lights flash13:26
theblazehenYeah :D13:27
theblazehenThen I just need to find VMs to host..13:27
andrewlsdlol13:28
theblazehennot much you can do with 1 mbit upload13:28
andrewlsdtrue dat13:28
andrewlsdimagine how much I can do with less than half of that.13:28
* theblazehen wants to upgrade to 20 mbit adsl. Then 2 mbit up :D13:28
theblazehenOh come on.. If both your normal install instructions and your docker-compose instructions don't "just work" then I'm kind of less willing to use your product.13:29
andrewlsdtheblazehen: you just need a gentle 50Mbit each way fibre link13:31
theblazehenYes, that would be *sufficient*13:32
andrewlsdtheblazehen: you referring to the Python Storefront.13:32
theblazehenandrewlsd: Yeah13:32
andrewlsdtheblazehen: at least, it would be sufficient initially13:32
theblazehentelkom sucks. They say the uncapped lte won't come to our area. Now it's sold out13:33
theblazehen`via socket in "/var/run/postgresql" at port "5432"` Now is it a socket or a port I'm connected to? Make up your mind..14:44
anton_mayFFS!!! I swear Neotel...urg14:51
theblazehen* <anton_may> has quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)14:54
anton_mayand nothing was running on the line now14:54
anton_mayeverybody has left14:54

anton_mayhopefully everything stays up untill i get home14:56
Kilosanton_may check if they have a twitter account and rev them there then they fix things quick because the whole world sees14:59
