RlaRedOK so why don't you install it on Arch Linux then?02:36
RlaRedlol that guy was trolling pretty hard02:37
RlaRedawesome02:37
drowsygeniushe was lol02:37
drowsygeniusdamn trolls, didn't know they still existed in 201602:37
RlaRedomg have you visited any forums lately02:37
RlaRedor read the comments in any news story lol02:37
drowsygeniusi have not lol.  I go to reddit but only read top sections02:37
RlaRedactually I haven't seen much trolling in reddit02:38
drowsygeniuslol, i try to stay away from facebook comments02:38
RlaRedyeah that's a good policy probably02:38
drowsygeniusseems like sites like espn and such want you to comment with your facebook account02:38
Breeboppa@drowsygenius do you have any issues with heat on the Raspi 3 running Mate ?02:38
RlaRedactually i'm just trying Ubuntu Mate for the first time02:39
RlaRedand I have to say it is freaking awesome02:39
drowsygeniusum i did have issues with heat until i doubled up my copper heatsink02:39
RlaRedruns way better than Ubuntu with Unity for me02:39
BreeboppaAh ! Thanks !02:39
drowsygeniusi can tell you my heat ready - just a sec, i love my new ir thermometer gun02:39
RlaRedI'm running it on a virtual machine with 1 CPU, 2 gigs of ram, 32 megs of video ram and it works awesome02:39
RlaReddrowsygenius, everyone wants you to use your facebook account nowadays02:40
drowsygeniusok, so with one copper heatsink i was getting 61C and the heat warning, with 2 heatsinks im sitting pretty at 50c02:40
drowsygeniusnice rlared02:40
BreeboppaVery nice !02:40
drowsygeniusi notice, ubuntu mate on raspberry pi 3 defaults 64megs of vram - havent looked into how to change allotment02:41
drowsygenius*noticed02:41
BreeboppaI have to pick up a few Raspi #'s   I have a few B+'s and 2's02:42
BreeboppaI'd like a 302:42
RlaReddef gonna settle with Ubuntu Mate for my python and C programming learning adventure :D02:42
drowsygeniusah ok. I will test this ubuntu mate on my pi 2.  I know my pi 2 generates less heat but I hope it wont be slow02:42
drowsygeniusheck ya man02:42
drowsygeniusim revisiting python and getting into SQL for a job internship02:43
Breeboppayeah, but the 3 has more cores and more RAM no ?02:43
drowsygeniuspi 3 has same number of cores, it runs a faster clock and optimized architecture,02:44
RlaRedthat's cool.  i learned some C++ back in the day but my job has nothing to do with programming02:44
BreeboppaAh! yes yes faster clock02:44
RlaRedi just want to learn it for fun and then maybe work on some open source project or something02:44
drowsygeniusso rlared, do you think you my venture into computer programming as a career?02:44
drowsygeniuspi 3 = 1.20ghz | pi 2 = 900mhz02:45
meygahmannha so funny we just decided to do senior design with raspberry pi 3 and 7" screen02:45
RlaReddrowsygenius: maybe one day, who knows.  it's a long road to learn it and i make pretty good money.  but if i get good at it in a few years then who knows02:45
meygahmannwe were actually just looking online for a good deal02:45
drowsygeniusmeyga - awesome do it!  im loving my setup!!!02:45
meygahmannhow much did you spend?02:45
drowsygeniusdo you live in the states?02:46

meygahmanngreetings from florida :)02:46
winston2kare we liking  our mate ?02:46
Breeboppalots and lots of online resources to learn Python02:46
RlaRedhello.  greetings from houston02:47
BreeboppaNYC here02:47
RlaRedBreeboppa: yeah actually fark.com had a deal yesterday for like $19 you get two entire courses02:47
drowsygeniusI paid 70 for screen, 20 for case, 29 for pi 3, 9 bucks for 32gb microsd chip so about 128 total, closer to 140 with taxes02:47
RlaRedi picked it up so now i'm set for a good bit of learning02:47
meygahmanndid you buy it online?02:47
drowsygeniusgreetings meyga.  I'm from Denver, Colorado :)02:47
BreeboppaYeah RlaRed ?! Nice ! I got a class from udemy for like $2002:48
drowsygeniusDo you have a microcenter near you?  Microcenter.com02:48
meygahmannill check02:48
RlaRedBreeboppa: nice. . . did you do it yet?  how was it?02:48
BreeboppaIm looking at it now, it's pretty good so far !02:48
drowsygeniusyou can get all parts from Microcenter.com - i recommend going into one if one is nearby02:48
BreeboppaMicrocenter is da bomb !02:49
drowsygeniushell yeah!!! Microcenter is the beesKnees!02:49
Breeboppagot all my Arduino's and Raspi's there and all my electronic parts and sensors there02:49
RlaRedyeah i struggled with which language to learn first since I had a tiny bit of C++ education years ago, and since linux is written with C02:50
drowsygeniushell yeah, thats the way to do it.  i get tired waiting for shipping, so i drive about 15mins- 20mins to my nearest one02:50
RlaRedbut i ended up deciding on python02:50
drowsygeniuspython is the language "experts" recommend, one of the easier ones02:50
RlaRedyeah.  are you learning python 2 or 3?02:51
drowsygeniusI have html, css, and javascript under my belt.  now getting back into python 2, i should do 3 however02:51
Breeboppaback in the day I learned C from the Denis Ritchie book.. hard as hell.. thank god for O'Riley press !!!02:51
drowsygeniuslol, those damn hard books02:51
RlaRedi guess knowing javascript probably makes python a little bit easier02:52
drowsygeniusmeyga - did you ever find a microcenter near you with their online locator?02:52
RlaRedyeah learning C from a book would be a bit rough. . . you'd have to do little portions at a time so as not to get super bored02:52
RlaRednot sure if i'll go with C or C++ after python02:52
Breeboppaback in the 386 processor days.. 256meg ram, 40 meg hard drives02:53
drowsygeniusso true - baby bites, spit a bit out - then get ready for the next bite02:53
drowsygeniuslol02:53
RlaRedman i'm really impressed how nice Ubuntu Mate is02:53
BreeboppaI learned at NYU in the late 80's, they had a C programming for Unix certificate02:53
RlaRedi can't imagine how awesome it's gonna be in a year or two after a few point releases02:54
drowsygeniusdepends, do you want to code machine level, aka assembly02:54
RlaRedBreeboppa: ah that's badass02:54
RlaReddrowsygenius: not really02:54
drowsygeniusahh ok02:54
RlaRedi mean theoretically i could get deep into it and start working on something hardcore, but i doubt it02:55
RlaRedi don't have a computer science background so that's pretty unlikely02:55
drowsygeniusso RlaRed and Breboppa may I add you to my friends list?02:55
drowsygeniushmm, you could make computer science your background if you wanted to...02:55
RlaReddrowsygenius: yeah sure. . . how does that work?02:56
BreeboppaWe did Assembler on the 8088 in 1983. I never want to see assembler again...;^)02:56
RlaRedyeah i could go back to school i suppose02:56
drowsygeniusright click someone's name in the list02:56
drowsygeniusor get your foot in the door as a software engineer and get real world experience during the time it would have taken you to complete school...02:56
RlaRedyeah and what does friending do?02:57
BreeboppaOkay all !!! Enjoy your evening,,,  Mate rock !!02:57
RlaReddrowsygenius: yeah exactly, that's more likely.02:57
RlaRedBreeboppa: night02:57
meygahmannstrange my mouse left click stopped working02:57
meygahmannall better now02:57
RlaReddrowsygenius: honestly i'll probably never do it professionally, but i guess you never know02:57
RlaRednot sure i'd want to do it all day long anyway02:57
meygahmanndrowsy no micro center near me02:57
drowsygeniusIt says add to friends list. just a notifier when you are online again, not too sure02:57
RlaRedprobably better left as a "labor of love" type things02:58
drowsygeniusoh, gotach RlaRed...02:58
RlaRedah ok so if you add me as a friend, does it have any effect on me?02:58
RlaRedor just on your side?02:58
winston2kmeygahman that has happened to me02:58
drowsygeniusjust myside02:58
drowsygeniusdamn no micro center02:58
meygahmannanyone have google drive working on 15.10?02:58
drowsygeniusthat is sad news meyga02:58
meygahmannyeah i know02:59
RlaRedi'm using 16.0402:59
drowsygeniusis google drive finally working with ubuntu?  I gave up 5 years ago02:59
RlaReddrowsygenius: ok yeah i added you as well02:59
drowsygeniusgoogle drive sync you are talking about yeah?02:59
meygahmannyeah02:59
drowsygeniuscool.  you are added02:59
drowsygeniuswhen did they get the sync working on ubuntu in general?02:59
meygahmannaround 4 years ago02:59
RlaRednice.  i should be around pretty frequently now that i've decided on Ubuntu Mate02:59
RlaRedi was trying all sorts of different distros before this03:00
meygahmannbut google recently changed thier api so it doesnt work anymore03:00
RlaRedMint, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch, etc etc etc03:00
drowsygeniussounds good RlaRed, im satisified with this one.  I'll update my core i5 laptop in a couple of weeks but for now this raspberry pi 3 will be my thin client messaging linux pc lol03:00
meygahmannkubuntu is really  similiar i used it about 4 years ago03:01
drowsygeniusoh so the google sync is broken now?03:01
drowsygeniustrue dat about kubuntu03:01
drowsygeniuskubuntu - heavier gui03:01
RlaReddrowsygenius: so you remote into another computer to chat?  is that what you mean by "thin client"?03:01
meygahmannwell i heard its broken ill try it now to see myself03:02
RlaRedI tried KDE back in the day and it's pretty nice.  But i watched some videos and it does seem a little bit overkill for my needs.03:02
drowsygeniuswell, i could remote into this one but its on the corner of my desk.  I meant thin as thin in resources lol03:02
RlaRedi want something that's light on resources, looks good, has a taskbar, but isn't too much like Windows03:02
drowsygeniusRlaRed - have you checked out puppylinux?03:02
RlaRedso Mate is perfect.  XFCE and Cinnamon are a little too boring and KDE and GNOME are a little too heavy03:02
RlaReddrowsygenius: No.  What's puppy based off of?  Regardless, Ubuntu MATE is perfect for me so I probably won't be checking anything out at this point03:03
RlaReddrowsygenius: ah ok, or maybe the computer is just physically super thin :D03:03
drowsygeniusyeah puppy is lightweight simple only 100mb iso03:04
RlaRedthat's cool.  don't need it to be THAT lightweight though :)03:04
drowsygeniusRlaRed, lol :)  I love my pc's thin and my women curvy :)03:04
RlaRedi'm running in virtualbox with a pretty powerful PC so mainly i just don't want a ton of eye candy and animations03:04
drowsygeniusgotcha03:05
RlaReddrowsygenius: really?  I love the opposite.  super skinny women and big fat computers from the 60's03:05
meygahmannyup google drive sync don't work no more03:05
drowsygeniusdamn meyga03:05
fifty-sevenCWelp. I was planning on finishing a python book this week, but Hearts of Iron 4 blew that plan out of the water.03:06
drowsygeniusha ha, I can't have too skinny.  I do love skinny women with curvy assets :)03:06
RlaRedfifty-sevenC: lol.  you game a lot?03:06
drowsygeniusEh put hearts of iron 4 on ice, it will be back after you finish that python book03:06
fifty-sevenCUsed too. But gamed a lot since HOI4 came out03:06
RlaReddrowsygenius: yeah i actually just said that cuz it was funny.  :)03:06
RlaRedfifty-sevenC: I got crazy for Civ 5 and Gal Civ 3 for a few months, thank god it passed03:07
drowsygeniusi like rocket league for pc.  That is my stress reliever03:07
RlaRedquite a few sleepless nights. . . my wife was ready to leave me haha03:07
drowsygeniusdamn RlaRed - can't have the wife leavin'03:07
RlaRedah i gotta try rocket league . . it looks interesting.  do you need a powerful computer or can it run with onboard graphics?03:07
fifty-sevenCWell, I finally figured out the game and how to play it properly. Then discovered the AI doesn't know how to play. :(03:08
RlaRedno wife leaving would be bad03:08
drowsygeniusI have a gtx 960 4gb.  Phenom X4 8gb ram.  So not too powerful pc03:08
RlaRedhmmmm you have a separate video card though. . . that's pretty powerful03:08
drowsygeniusha ha at AI doesnt know how to play03:08
RlaRedi have intel on-board graphics. . . not gonna cut it probably :D03:08
drowsygeniusyeah i use seperate video card, i like to max everything out on rocket league03:09
drowsygeniusintel on-board graphics might get raped a bit...03:09
drowsygeniusSo anyone interested in building a VR pc or already has one?03:10
drowsygenius*VR ready pc03:10
RlaRednah i'm a cheap bastard03:11
fifty-sevenCUSSR still getting owned by Panzer 2s I stock piled before WW2 in 1942. After I already got Pz3s and replaced my Pz3s with Pz4s. USSR doesn't even bother building tanks. Seemingly stumbled into a unit type that could destroy Pz2s in 1942. But didn't bother to upgrade it to be able to handle Pz3s or Pz4s.03:11
RlaRedsounds like i would think that's hardcore if I had any clue about that game03:11
fifty-sevenCPz2s were obsolete before WW2 even started03:12
fifty-sevenCUSSR had Heavy tanks before WW2 and t-34s before Germany attacked russia03:12
drowsygeniusha ha, im getting that way. I think it's because i have a long-term girlfriend again. so I pay for other things, Now i need to convince her into my tech projects - she will become my angel investor :)03:13
RlaReda tech sugar mama03:14
RlaRedi like it03:14
drowsygeniusAlright RlaRed, I have to take a MENSA test tomorrow.  I better shut off my brain and get well rested. :)03:14
RlaRedok good luck03:14
RlaRednight03:14
drowsygeniusthanks!  Good night!03:14
javashinhello someone knows when mate gtk3 is going to be in xenial ?03:38
junioropa04:01
javashin HexChat: 2.10.2 ** OS: Linux 4.4.0-24-generic x86_64 ** Distro: Ubuntu "xenial" 16.04 ** CPU: 4 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU       M 380  @ 2.53GHz (GenuineIntel) @ 1.60GHz ** RAM: Physical: 3.6GiB, 82.8% free ** Disk: Total: 101.4GiB, 44.2% free ** VGA: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller ** Sound: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID ** Ethernet: None found ** Uptime: 27m 10s **05:05
javashin:)05:05
guest-rom5lqhi05:28
guest-rom5lqi can not read my ubuntu mate desktop. it was corrupted05:29
guest-rom5lqviewing unreadable text05:29
guest-rom5lqcan any one help me05:30
fifty-sevenC:( Boom and zoom man. Boom and zoom.05:46
fifty-sevenCThere won't be a gtk3 mate in xenial. It will be 16.1005:47
javashinthat sucks05:56
javashinim going to install debian sid05:56
fifty-sevenCWhy?05:57
javashinmate gtk305:57
fifty-sevenCWhy do you want gtk3?05:58
fifty-sevenCYou will lose a lot of features.05:58
javashinlike waht05:58
fifty-sevenCThe reason for the move to gtk3 is hidpi support.05:58
fifty-sevenCLike icons in your file browser.05:58
fifty-sevenCWhatever it is called when you use a dialog to pick a file to open05:58
Mikaelagtk2 is dead and upstream MATE is going to drop support for it, so there are good reasons for wanting gtk305:59
javashindebian sid already have it05:59
alkisgIt's called "testing" for a reason06:00
alkisgLTS is "long term support", stable06:00
alkisgSelect whatever suits your needs06:00
javashini installed the other day but in my mind i was thnking debian was slow06:00
javashinand was the fucking kernel06:00
Mikaelasid is actually called as "unstable"06:01
javashini just need to compile my own on deban sid06:01
javashini know06:01
alkisgdebian stretch and sid both have mate-desktop 1.1406:01
javashini know06:02
fifty-sevenCgtk2 isn't dead. There is just less things to need to fix for it.06:02
javashini installed the other day06:02
javashinis dead06:02
javashinxfce is droping it too06:02
fifty-sevenCxfce is moving to qt though06:02
javashinno06:02
javashinnever06:03
alkisgThat's LXDE, isn't it?06:03
javashinyes06:03
javashinlxqt06:03
fifty-sevenCAh06:03
alkisgjavashin: there are PPAs in Ubuntu that will give you newer packages06:03
javashinthere is a version of lxde gtk3 too06:03
javashinyeah but debian got 52000 pkgs on sid06:04
alkisgWhy is that important?06:04
alkisgAll the good packages get to debian stable and ubuntu as well06:04
alkisgThe bad packages that don't make it there, are not worth it06:05
javashini like rolling release distros06:05
javashincutting edge06:05
alkisgThen by all means use it06:05
fifty-sevenCDebian isn't cutting edge and using the testing version I wouldn't call cutting edge either.06:06
javashini have archlinux too06:06
javashinsid is cutting edge06:06
javashingot systemd 230 gnome 3.2006:06
javashinmate 1.14.1 gtk306:06
gordonjcpjavashin: I used to use Arch but ended up just switching to Ubuntu because Arch had too many broken packages07:02
gordonjcpjavashin: "cutting edge" is nice and all, but I prefer "not broken"07:02
gordonjcpyou can't rely on rolling release distros07:03
javashinarch is fine07:07
gordonjcpjavashin: not if you want to get stuff done07:08

blitoHi guys. I installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 a few days ago, and I just got a pop up saying I have 15.10 and that I should upgrade it. What should I do?20:29
blitoFirst time I install linux, I don't even know where to start looking for help.20:30
gordonjcpblito: are you sure you installed 16.04?20:32
blitogordonjcp, is there any place I can check besides looking for the name of the .iso?20:34
gordonjcpblito: open a terminal, "cat /etc/issue"20:34
blito15.1020:35
blito....20:35
blitoI'll go find the .iso20:35
gordonjcphaha20:35
blitolol, thanks20:35
gordonjcpyou can either do an upgrade, or reinstall from scratch20:35
blitois it the same?20:35
gordonjcpwell, no, if you reinstall you'll likely wipe anything you've got installed, anything in /home20:36
blitoshould I just follow the GUI?20:36
gordonjcpfor the updater?20:36
blitoyea20:36
gordonjcpyeah, if it's not going to take a million years on your internet connection :-)20:36
gordonjcpif you had to download the 16.04 iso it would take about as long as doing the upgrade to install20:36
blitoright20:37
blitowill the update be as clean as a reinstall from scratch? coming from windows i'd do a reinstall just in case20:38
gordonjcpblito: nothing stopping you doing a reinstall if you'd prefer20:40
gordonjcpblito: an update will keep your installed applications, settings, and files in your homedir20:40
linux_Hello all . Installing Ubuntu mate on my 3 computers atm ;)20:41
blitogordonjcp, ok. I guess I'll do it in a while.20:43
blitoafter checking that iso haha20:43
blitothanks for your help20:43
gordonjcplinux_: at that rate, you're just about worthwhile making an install server20:43
gordonjcpblito: no worries20:43
linux_;)20:44

pilnei just did a fresh install of ubuntu-mate, on the old one, steam had a different icon in the panel. on this one, it has the older one (if i recall) and keeps complaining about outdated binaries when i launch it, but works fine. i said something in #ubuntu to no response for quite some time.21:34

teward__CoolGuy: you're either banned or quieted in the channel, or +m is on and you don't have voice.  Though, #freenode should be where those questions get directed23:35
